I was in the grocery store the other day stocking up on processed cheese food substitutes. The line was rather long of course because I was in the "I-can't-count-to-10" items express-line. This is the line where people justify their bulging shopping carts by saying they only have "4 basic food groups". After a brief altercation with a septuagenarian in front of me (an altercation that ended with a well placed kielbasa), I had to wait while he paid his $187.51 grocery bill with pennies from his coin purse. I settled down among the candy bars to nurse my fresh wounds and perused the women's magazines.

I think most men are uncomfortable reading women's magazines. Probably they feel their masculinity is threatened if they are seen reading these journalistic tributes to estrogen overload. As if publicly reading Cosmopolitan shouts to the world "I'm wearing pantyhose right now, and thank God the cotton lining lets me breath!" Well believe me, you can be reading Guns and Ammo magazine and still be thankful for that cotton lining, but that's not my point.

I love reading women's magazines. Besides the eroticism of the hair removal advertisements, these rags are a treasure trove of valuable insight into the psyche of the American female. If indeed our humanity is characterized by an ongoing "Battle of the Sexes", I believe it is important to know thy enemy. For our own survival, men need to read these magazines to prepare themselves for the full-scale assault of a woman who's just read a Redbook article entitled "10 Ways To Get Your Man To Share His Inner Most Feelings". Men know their inner most feelings involve Hooters Girls, sports statistics, Hooters Girls, making lots of money, Hooters Girls, red meat, sports statistics and Hooter Girls (not necessarily in that order). Men don't need a women's magazine to know that they should never share their innermost feelings. However, by reading the pabulum in these magazine articles, men will be well-armed to answer the barrage of questions fired at them; Men should always be prepared for questions like: "Where do you see our relationship going?" "If you didn't meet me, would you be happy with someone else? or the ever-dreaded "Am I fat?". It might come as some surprise to men that the correct answers to these questions respectively are: "I like our relationship just the way it is.", "I guess so.", and "Well you have put on a few."

Even if men have no interest in arming themselves for the inevitable salvo of female banter, it's just plain funny reading women's magazines to see what drives women nuts. The worldly importance women place upon "the right shoes" is hilarious. Of course the worldly importance men place upon their favorite quarterback's rating is equally hilarious to women. For me though, women's magazines are just funny to read.

In every women's magazine though, there is the inevitable QUIZ. These quizzes are usually the most entertaining sections of the magazines (besides the "men are pigs" horror stories). Additionally, the quizzes are easily completed while Granny is searching through her coupon organizer in the check-out line. Usually the quizzes are all sexually related, although a few amusing fashion quizzes show up from time to time. Understandably, not everyone wants to pay the $3.95 to buy one of these rags, so I've developed a quiz myself based on the valuable information I've read in women's magazines. Go ahead and read it. You might just learn a little about yourself and the opposite sex.

1. Women will often go to bed with a man on a first date if she believes the man is:
a) Interested in a long term commitment
b) Well educated and with a good career
c) Wearing great shoes

2. Men will often likely go to bed with a woman on a first date if the woman:
a) is attractive
b) is intelligent
c) has no visible open sores...and even that can be cured with a few tequilas.

3. A sure sign that a man is losing his sex drive is
a) he is not aroused by his partner
b) he would prefer to read a book
c) he's too lazy to patch the leak in the doll

4. Men are most likely to masturbate
a) once a week
b) twice a week
c) before finishing this survey

5. Women are most likely to masturbate
a) in a bathtub
b) listening to soothing music
c) after "minute-man" has begun snoring.

6. To prolong sex and delay orgasm, men often think about
a) baseball
b) football
c) Hillary Clinton

7. One way a woman can enhance her sexual life with her partner is to:
a) suggest playing role-playing games
b) meet him at the door wearing Saran wrap
c) charge discount fees for loyal customers

I know that I haven't really updated with anything meaningful in quite some time, but life has been relatively uneventful as of late. I've been passing most of my time by working out (trying to get in shape — other than round — and rid of my gut) and catching up on my reading... Backfire, by Loren Baritz, has taught me many things that I did not know about America's involvement and subsequent failure in Vietnam. As informative as this work may be, it's a rather difficult read due to the upsetting subject matter. The saddest part about it is that I almost feel like it's happening all over again with our involvement in Iraq.

On a lighter note, I also finally got around to reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in its entirety, which I thoroughly enjoyed though I was left rather confused as to why there was no Igor/Ygor (however the fuck you wanna spell it). As it turns out, Igor was not written into the story by Mary Shelley, but was introduced by Wyllis Cooper in his screenplay for the 1939 film "Son of Frankenstein". Oh well...

As part of the same collection, I also read Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde . Everyone knows the basic story, even without reading it, so I recommend skipping this one. It at least has an interesting take on the duality of man, but touches on it so briefly that it's really not worth the time it takes to read it. At least I have Bram Stoker's Dracula to look forward to (last part of the "Classics of Horror" collection), though that is being put on indefinite hold at least until I finish reading Carl Sagan / Ann Druyan's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors , after which I plan to read Morgan Llywelyn's 1916 and Larry Beinhart's American Hero (which was the basis for the film "Wag the Dog"), respectively.

I guess that's all for now.

I was talking to a moth late one evening, and he was trying to break into an electric light bulb and fry himself on the wires.

"Why do you fellows pull this stunt?" I asked him. "Because it is the conventional thing for moths or why if that had been an uncovered candle instead of an electric bulb, you would now be a small, unsightly cinder. Have you no sense?"

"Plenty of it," he answered. "But at times, we get tired of using it. We get bored with the routine and crave beauty and excitement. Fire is beautiful and we know that if we get too close, it will kill us. But what does that matter? It is better to be happy for a moment and be burned up with the beauty than to live a long time and be bored all the while. So we wad all our life up into one little roll and then we shoot the roll. That is what life is for. It is better to be part of beauty for one instant and then cease to exist than to exist forever and never be a part of beauty. Our attitude toward life is 'come easy, go easy.' We are like human beings used to be, before they became to civilized to enjoy themselves."

And before I could argue him out of his philosophy, he went and immolated himself on a patent cigar lighter. I do not agree with him myself. I would rather have half the happiness and twice the longevity. But at the same time, I wish there was something I wanted as badly as he wanted to fry himself.

Energy Bills Are Down to the Wire
There's a More Secure, Cheaper, Environmentally Sensitive Way

While working alongside Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, MoveOn, Working Assets, and others, TrueMajority members have succeeded in preventing passage of the Bush Administration's energy bill. Rather than see sky-high gas prices and yet another American war in the Middle East as the perfect occasion to enact sustainable energy policies, those who support the oil and coal industries in the White House and in Congress are using current events to launch another push for the same old stuff: relax environmental laws, drill the wilderness, and burn more fuel.

Of course, it doesn't have to be this way. Our country currently lags behind the rest of the world in energy conservation and renewable supplies; just look at the effects on America's health, the environment, and national security.

There are three things TrueMajority members can do:

1) Tell Congress to reject any new energy legislation that doesn't get serious about renewable supplies and energy conservation. (They'll try to sneak these bills through over the coming months, so now is a good time to send a clear message.)

2) Write a letter to the editor to educate your neighbors and to further pressure your members of Congress.

3) Help our friends at the Apollo Alliance promote their detailed plan for sustainable and secure energy, and to run the TV ad that lays bare the Bush energy policies.

TELL CONGRESS. Tell your senators and representatives to vote against any bill that does more to help keep us hooked on fossil fuels than it does to help us break the habit. Just click this link!

Then please forward this message to anyone else you know who believes our future should include renewable energy.

WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR. Letters to the editor are another powerful way to influence your Congress members. This feature uses state-of-the-art technology to make it really easy for you to submit a letter to the editor. Click here to give it a try!

PROMOTE THE APOLLO ALLIANCE. Check out the folks who are working for a positive alternative, and if you like what you read, kick in a few bucks to help them or their latest "Out of Gas" ad campaign. Remember, the power of the online community is that ten dollars from 10,000 people adds up to a good-sized budget to confront the special interests.

So here and now, in our rotting nation
We gravitate toward such statements because they provide convenient metaphors to illustrate an "ultimate good" or a "pure evil". After all, nothing supports a moral point like a potent metaphor.

By my reckoning, however, Light and Darkness exist as degrees of themselves. No light is ultimately bright, nor is any shadow without some character of lightness.

As I look around, I see Light and Darkness swirling together. Like partners, they dance, dipping and swooping in an intimate embrace.

Perhaps this is merely my own perception of things... but to a poet, what else is there?

This weekend, British Prime Minister Tony Blair promised that any soldiers suspected of torturing Iraqi detainees would be disciplined. The Chief of the General Staff of the British Army, General Mike Jackson, has stated that any soldier who subjects Iraqi prisoners to ill-treatment or torture is not fit to wear the Queen's uniform. General Jackson also sat on the Army Board that ruled that the murderers of an Irish citizen, Peter McBride, were fit to wear the Queen's uniform and could remain in the British Army.

Is it really any wonder that British soldiers murdered, raped and tortured detainees while serving in Basra alongside Scots Guardsmen Wright and Fisher, the convicted murderers of Peter McBride?

On being an organ donor

I must admit that I'm a bit torn on this particular issue. I, myself, am not an organ donor. Why? Because I want to be prepared just in case there is some sort of afterlife in which my vital organs may be needed. Anyway, that's the short answer for why I choose to not be an organ donor, but it goes deeper... I still haven't decided whether I wish to be buried or cremated once I finally die. If there is an afterlife of sorts in which I would need my earthly form intact, I would take comfort in being buried with my body unaltered. Why should I have to donate my eyes to some blind bastard, lest I suffer in the afterlife without being able to see?! Also, on the same side of this coin, I am concerned that any part of my living flesh that may be put into another human being may still hold a portion of my consciousness, leaving me to experience the continued existence of the organ's recipient through his/her senses, unable to control any aspect of this new life for said organ.

Aside from theological aspects, here's what really divides me on this issue. As a modern Druid (or Secular Humanist), I fully support the advancement of the human species via science and technology. In this perspective, I should want my body donated to science once my life ends. However, I also feel that the earth is over-populated by humans as it is, and if my body is destroyed/buried in its entirety after my death, this may increase the chances of hindering the bearing of posterity by those who may benefit from my donated organs.

It is for these reasons that I (at this point in time) have chosen not to be an organ donor. To some, this may sound selfish, and it is to some extent. However, it's also about preservation of our planet and to keep our species from over-populating and dying off completely. If that makes me a selfish asshole, then so be it.

SIDE NOTE: This essay is far from being my complete view on this issue as it is more of a "reader's digest breakdown", feel free to contact me directly for further deliberation.

Combatting Spam

When is it finally going to stop? When will the spammers realise that no one is interested in their products? Anyone with internet access should already know that the enhancement/diet pills/treatments don't work. How many laws need to be passed before this type of "forced-down-your-throat" guerrilla advertising will finally come to an end..? Checking my daily email messages has become an all-out war! We are all aware that spam adversely affects the business environment in several ways. Time taken to deal with spam results in loss of productivity. Viruses are transported in spam messages and the spam content is often offensive. Last April, the company I work for implemented an enterprise filtering solution to control spam. At that time, we were receiving 40,000 emails each day, of which 31% were spam. Today we are receiving 66,000 emails daily, of which 56% are spam. Clearly, the amount of spam is on the increase as are the threats spam can carry, and these filters are simply not enough. Too often, real business messages get quarantined as spam while the real spam slips through the filters.

A time is going to come when we, the cyber-people, will have to take the law into our own Carpal Tunnel Syndrome suffered hands, rise up and hunt the spam bastards down, cram all their penis and breast enlargement pills down their throats, cover their entire bodies with their weight-loss patches, pack them all onto their fantasy vacation cruise-liner, send the ship to some remote, uninhabited island in the South Pacific (or France for all I care), then DROP A GODDAMNED H-BOMB ON THOSE HORSE-COCK SUCKERS!!!

EDIT: In this rant, I have suggested that death is the only acceptable punishment for spammers. In reality, I'm not quite so heartlessly blood-thirsty. Instead, simply filling their lungs with angry wasps or replacing their blood with turpentine would be satisfactory.
