No. No, I don't have a job now. That's not what I'm hooray-ing about.

But now... now... I do have FLASH, that magical program. I finally got down on my knees, and I was like, "You know, God, I keep trying to save for Flash so I don't have to use a bootleg copy.** But every time I get money set aside for it either 1) my car breaks or 2) I break, and the money I've saved goes for whatever broke. Please help, because it appears that I'm shooting myself in the foot trying to save for this stupid program and if you won't do something no one can." And then, a few days later, I decided to visit some friends at a place I used to intern. And GUESS WHAT. They gave me Flash. I think it's Flash 8. The one before Adobe crashed the party. Hooray! Thanks, God!

** I have a guilty conscience.

So now begins the tedious process of learning Flash. I think after I get the hang of putting the characters together I'm gonna try to film the storyboards I posted a few days ago.

I've also worked on writing out the NK comic some... not going so well. I really, really, think story is critical, and the story is just not coming along nearly so well as I had hoped. I mean, pretty pictures are great and stuff, but what good is a comic book or any other literary work if there is no story? So I guess it will need to be re-written several (hundred) times before anyone else besides me even sees it, but that's part of the journey, huh?

Also, my 4-year-old niece is turning out to be an awesome artist. She has this stylized way of drawing people where their ears and hands and feet are little spirals... it's pretty awesome, and not really a bad idea, either.

... and I'm hungry.

I thought I would write a journal since I haven't made one in a while. Here it goes.

I am now back in WV and still unemployed. I had a job interview for a design position at a local hospital's marketing department, but I didn't get the job because I was up against people with 20 years of agency experience. However, one of the ladies that interviewed me really liked my illustration work and gave me names and contact numbers of people within local ad agencies that she felt sure would use my skills. She said they would need mostly storyboards but also illustrations from time to time. Therefore, I intend to create some storyboards and bring some of my other illustrations together and go harass some agencies. I mean, I will present my work in a professional manner which will inspire agencies to hire me as a freelancer. Whoot.

Furthermore, I have one (1) more larger NK drawing I want to make and then I intend to work on the story for NK's graphic novel some more.

And finally, I want to make some more character design sheets and send them to various animation places and see if I can get a job doing character design. I keep hoping I'll get Flash and learn it and make an excellent (totally) demo reel, but...hahaha. Yeah right.

Speaking of Flash, the last time I posted a journal here my computer had died. It seems to be functioning again, or mostly functioning. Well, actually, I haven't turned it on since I came back to WV in February, so it might have broken again in the mean time. It seems to like to go a little spastic when it is physically moved from one location to the next (even if that location is a quarter inch away from the previous location).

First the NK part. Being in Colorado and having little social life has been good for me, because I'm actually getting somewhere on the whole Ninja Kitty series. Huzzah! I got a domain name registered today. I don't have anything up yet, and it will probably be a while still before I have anything, but at least it's registered. Furthermore, I started an NK blog at [link] Well, if you follow me here, you pretty much know what's going on, but blogspot is a lot shinier and I have a logo there. A logo makes all the difference. :-/

And now, the rant:

So there's this show they're advertising on Cartoon Network. It's something about "The Saturdays" or something; I'm not sure of the name because the show looks so atrocious and I can't bear to look for long. At any rate, it looks like they tried to make the show all anime, but the result looks like the illegitimate offspring of an anime and a 1960's Hanna-Barbara cartoon. It really, really, doesn't work. I guess what I have to say here is, if you're going to do something, do it your way, not the way that's popular.

I finished my last project at work. It was the cover wrap for the July 4th Vail Daily. Apparently the Vail office loved it (which is good since they didn't see it in progress until one day before it went to print), and the publisher loved it, and they are considering making a poster of it. I did the whole thing, drawing and all, in Photoshop, which is a new thing for traditional-oriented me. I'd post it on here but I don't know if I'm allowed. I, personally, wasn't overly thrilled with it, but that goes without saying.

I also, surpisingly, got to design a dog character at work. I was told when I went to work I'd get to do illustration (which makes sense because I'm sure they didn't hire me for my design skills), but I didn't know they'd throw in some character design, too. Apparently they'd given the project to others and didn't get the results they wanted, and I managed to make two designs they liked the first time around. I think I'm missing my calling. I should try to get into character design but I'm so bad at designing people. I also don't know what to put in a portfolio. If anyone has advice let me know.

Meanwhile, I still dislike Colorado (or at least this part of it). I really just don't fit in here (not that I fit in anywhere. I think most people consider me a tag-along). Anyway, maybe things will change. Who knows. Maybe I can get a dog eventually, providing I can find a rescue that isn't condescending and prone to jumping to conclusions.

I finished my first big project here at my new job. I got to lay out a magazine, more or less, about biking in Summit County. It's sort of an odd assignment to give me. After all, I feel rather like Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes fame when it comes to bikes - I see a bike, and it attacks me. The end. Fortunately, I didn't have to know anything about bikes for this, since someone else wrote it all. It was quite a learning experience, and was pretty good over all, except for the working-with-the-sales-rep part, which is never really any fun.

So...I got another project yesterday. Apparently I have to illustrate a cowboy and horse or something. I really don't know what I'm doing because no one has given me any details. I don't suppose they'll want a drawing of Brisco and Comet the Wonder Horse, but miracles do happen. And then after that I have to paint something for the cover of the July 4th Vail Daily. This is a good thing. I like painting. I don't like computers. Well, not for art, anyway.

Otherwise, I'm still stuck on trying to figure out how to start my NK comic. It's just not coming to me. And. I don't know. I haven't posted anything here because I haven't done anything, and even if I did it would probably suck, so it hardly seems worth it. I am baffled at why my boss and some others think my drawings are so wonderful but for the most part they go largely unnoticed on here. I suspect it's because my drawings are mediocre, and also because of the ridiculous amounts of images posted on this site, but I don't know.

And Prince Caspian hits theaters this weekend. Oddly enough, Prince Caspian and the Telmarines of Narnia seem to have a Russian accent in the movie, which is strange, since I got the impression from the books that the Telmarines were descended from some people of ill-repute that were stuck on an island. :-/ OK, I'm a Narnia nerd. Anyway.

I have a few special projects. I get to lay out a bicycle guide thingy for the tourists, and I get to make the cover wrap for the July 4th special edition of the Vail Daily. I guess it's illustration. It will be good practice doing what a client wants instead of what I want. The July 4th one I think will be an illustration of town or something, so that will be good for me since I don't draw buildings much as is.

I'd still rather do animation, I guess. But I'm lazy, and I don't want to do flash, and I don't want to do lightwave (no depth perception!!!!!1one!1), so I guess I'm stuck. I like just sitting down, just me and the paper and the pencil, and drawing it, and ruffling the paper, and seeing it move that way, and then taking it to screen. I just don't care about computers I should've been born in the 40's.

Hi, it's me. But I guess you knew that. I haven't been doing much of anything lately. Well, OK, I've been doing some stuff. I got a bunch of Prismacolor markers for Christmas (thanks, Dad!), and they're pretty awesome. I'm working on a drawing using the markers and the Prismacolor colored pencils. It's looking decent, although now that I'm partway through it I think the composition could be better. At any rate, it's good practice, and it lead me to the realization that I am AWFUL in digital mediums. Seriously. Have you seen my gallery? I do better in traditional mediums. But, alas! How many employers want someone skilled in traditional mediums lately? Not many.

I'm glad 2007 is over. I didn't think 2007 could be as bad as '06 but it was pretty close. I had migraines all year, and found out it's probably because of the building that I work in. I talked to the boss about it, but he told me pretty much to get a new job if I didn't like it. Well, I've been trying to get a new job. I've been trying to get a new job for 10 months now to no avail. Alas again! Alas is an under-used word, don't you think?

Anyway, I'm going to try to crank out some illustration-ish work in '08 and see if I can get into illustration or something to that effect, and I'm also going to try to get off my lazy butt and produce an actual animation. Animation is hard to make for me, because I'm having the awfulest time finding an idea I really want to pursue. When I had the idea for baby dragon back in my senior year of college I was all like, "Yeah!" But now most of the ideas I think of I'm like, "Eh." I need an idea that I can 'really sink my teeth into,' as Genz put it.

A cookie for all of you that read this! Too bad none of you know where I live, so I guess you all can't claim your cookie. Waily, waily (And another cookie if you know what "Waily, waily" comes from).

Edit: Bugger, I just realized Brian knows where I live. Cookie to Brian next time we go to Penn Station.

I'm in one of those states lately where I have all these creative ideas for a project but little time to put them on paper, or little idea of how to pull them off, or not enough money to buy the supplies I need. However, I have what is turning out to be a pretty good colored pencil drawing coming right along, and hopefully I'll get it posted in the next few weeks, even though I may have to borrow Dad's digital camera to do it. So look for that. I'm really happy with it thus far.

HA HA! I bet you thought I was talking about the old TV show!

Actually, I'm taking commissions for pet portraits, or just about any commission, for that matter. If anyone is interested, please send me a note! We'll discuss prices and all that stuff. Currently I am limited to doing either digital art or colored pencil on illustration board, so you can take your pick.

On an extra note, if any of you pray or anything, say a prayer for me 'cause this Tuesday I have a job interview at one of the city's bigger ad agencies. I reeeeealllllllyyyyy need this job.

Currently working on:
- Drawings for Karl's Kids
- Xaro
- Figuring out what I want for supper

I found out it's probably for the better that I didn't get hired at Neopets, because I read that the upper management is all scientology-ish, and you just about have to be into the scientology-ish stuff yourself to be promoted. It would be a conflict of interest. Besides, I could only hear so much about Thetans and stuff before I started preaching to them. Well, not preaching, per se, but letting them know what I think.

So I'll just stay here and draw guinea pigs and ninja cats and live off of ramen and tacos. I like ramen and tacos.
