how are you all doing?

It's been two years and 10 days since i wrote anything here and almost a year since my last submission. I'm not proud to say I havent touched any of my old projects during that time I miss being a student, work can really take it out of you... It's funny because each time I visit my homepage here I look at the suspended project and say to myself: "damn, I have to finish this, I like it too much to leave it alone" and then somehow I never get around to it I challenged my self today again - "when I get back home I'll put some work into the thing and finish it", let's see how that turns out

What else... work on the bunker scene is proceeding at the 'usual' pace. Expect updates - i'm NOT quiting this project even if I am to submit the last render on my death bed...

Hello inhabitants of the great dAsphere*

As some of you might have noticed i'm not as active around here as I used to be. Whether that is good or bad it's for you to decide but since I have a moment on my hands I decided to update this journal thing here on my homepage.

DA v5 has been with us since some time now, as always i got used to the new layout etc but there are two things that I miss from the v4. The desktop screenshot presented on the main page and those little nC, xN, yJ message notifications instead of the mysterious n messages format (and yes I know you can still see them when you hover your mouse over it). Not that anybody cares but I just felt like voicing my opinions on that matter. Moving on.

The primary reason for my lack of activity is that someone decided I was worthy of employment. So... now i'm working during the week and what little time I have left is divided between freelance work, watching anime, enjoying what's left of summer and sleep. I don't expect things to cool down much unless the powers that be decide that a day should have 48 hours instead of 24. I don't comment nearly as much as I used to but I try to look at all work in my devwatch and even say something from time to time so I guess it's not THAT bad, right? RIGHT?!

I miss working on that latest 3d scene of mine and I hope i'll be able to squeeze some time into it soon.

Ok. I realise that I havent submited anything 3d since... OMG!... over a month. I just have too many things hanging around my head right now. Projects running in parallel right now include (but are not limited to):

- designing and building a flash site for a company i'm trying to start
- continue working on my project (ya know, the 3d thing)
- AFF (it's been a month since I did anything for them)
- school: exams (Artificial Intelligence in 6 days)
- school: projects (Java/SQL project I need to finish)
- learning Japanese (i try to do one unit per day but i'm just too damn tired sometimes so i manage about 3-4 per week)

Add my lazyness, some software and hardware issues I had recently and some family problems and there you have it. Seems like from the half of october i havent really accomplished much but somehow i'm working on something almost everyday.

PS. I've finished modeling that armor (essentialy my "Max Badass" character) so I'll post a modeling-final version in a day or two.

From here on that's where all the WIPs are going to be landing as well as other stuff that I wish to share concerning the production process of my animation short (formerly known as Project02), possibly even some short tutorials on a specyfic subject. I'll try to update that site frequently (depending on how much I'll be working per week on that short but my goal is to have at least two updates per week if possible - small thing that may help me a little bit in staying motivated )

Why I did this? Because I want to avoid having wips laying around my main DA gallery and nobody watches scraps on DA anyway

Since 3 days XSI has been acting up and I can't seem to determine the cause of the problem. First it would not open up at all displaying a nice "Failed to save sequence before system failure." message. I reinstalled it and it helped... for a while. After working a bit on my "Max Badass" model I saved the scene, closed xsi and when I tried to open it up again later - same error as before appears.

Starting to get irritated.

So I'm thinking maybe some preferences got screwed up so I backup and delete the XSI user folder (the one that holds all the configuration files). No effect - still the same error. Another reinstallation of xsi - wow, it works! I'm happy... for a while. The program loaded without errors but when I tried to open up my scene: WHAM! "Failed to save sequence before system failure."

Note to self: screaming at the computer does not fix problems. It does however bring some stress relief.

Right now I have two more things to try: reinstallation of the SPM server (license manager for xsi) and if that doesnt help... next comes the thing i hate most: goddamn windows reinstallation. Just when I had it working since may and set up the way I like... dont you just hate it when that happens?

Ok... I'm off to see if the SPM reinstall will help... what a beautiful and productive way to spend the weekend

Well what do you know... IT DIDN'T HELP



So to sum it up:
- user preferences directory deleted: no effect
- xsi uninstaled, program directory deleted, xsi reinstalled: no effect
- license server reinstalled: no effect
- attempt at opening up/saving a different scene (the obvious test): no effect

Ok... I just wasted my weekend on a bunch of pointless activities (like formating my drive and reinstalling the os) but all of them didn't bring me any closer to finding the cause of my problems.

I was able to find a temporary workaround though - seems like running and closing xsi setup before starting xsi fixes it... somewhat. I'm able to run the program, work, save and load files without problems until I close it. If I want to run it again I have to do the "setup thing". Takes only a few seconds and it's not that big of a burden but... this thing is going to bug me now.

I WILL figure it out someday. For now I'm fed up with it and I'll leave it as it is for now - I'm just glad I'm able to work again.

Foreword:

This guide is entirely based on information from Guru3D.com forums. I decided to rewrite it here because It's easier to find for the DA people. A special thanks goes to the man that made it all possible, author of RivaTuner and SoftFireGL scripts - Alexey "Unwinder" Nicolaychuk


0. Things to remember

- You'll loose the ability to use a normal Catalyst control panel, there are no Direct3D controls in the FGL panel

- This will not give you any perfromance increase in games (it might even work slower). On the other hand if you are using professional CAD/CAM packages then you should see a significant increase in viewport rendering speed

1. Things you'll need

- A Radeon GFX card (should work with 9500 and up) working under Windows 2000, XP or 2003
- ATI FireGL 8.062 driver [link]
Why this one? Because it's tested and know to work with Riva Tuner 2.0 RC 15.4.
Later versions will not work with this version of SoftFireGL patch script
- RivaTuner 2.0 RC 15.4 [link]
- WinRAR (for unpacking the driver) [link]

2. Modifying the drivers.

Once you have the driver downloaded, unpack it somwhere (rightclick and select Extract Files...)

Install RivaTuner

Go to \PatchScripts\ATI\SoftFireGL\Unified\ and run the SoftFireGL w2k.rts script.
- Select the FireGL card you want to mod the driver for (It has to be a workstation equivalent of your radeon!):

Radeon 9500 = FireGL Z1
Radeon 9600 = FireGL T2
Radeon 9700 = FireGL X1
Radeon 9800 = FireGL X2
Radeon 9800SE = FireGL X2 (4-pipeline mode)
Radeon X800 = FireGL X3

and click Continue.

- The script will prompt you for a location of ati2mtag.sys file, change the file type to ati2mtag.sy_ and browse to \Driver\2KXP_INF\B_18414\ati2mtag.sy_ (select the file and click Open).

A window will appear waring you that the file is not certified to work with this script, click OK and after a while you should see another window that says "Patch script has been successfully executed. Read log for details." (if there is something else here then the patch has failed and there is a VERY good chance that the mod will not work ).

Now you need to manually modify the drivers .ini files with your cards device ID.

First you need to know what your cards PCI deviceID is. Launch RivaTuner, in the Main tab you should see a line like this:

"256-bit R350 (8x1) with 128MB DDR memory Customize..."
(of course yours will be most likely different).

Click on the little button next to "Customize..." and select "Graphics subsystem diagnostic report" (4th icon from the right). Scroll down till you see "Display adapter information" and right under that there should be a line Device ID : xxxx. Copy that number (where xxxx are) or write it down somewhere.

Go to \Driver\2KXP_INF\ and open in Notepad:
->C2_18678.inf if you are on Windows 2000
->CX_18678.inf if you are on Windows XP/2003

You can modify both if you want.

Inside those files you should see a section [ATI.Mfg.NTx86] with adapters listed. Once again, remember for which card you are moding your drivers (in my case it was R9800 -> FireGL X2 mod) and modify ONLY the appropriate lines.

Find the firegl that you want to mod your radeon into and modify it's Device ID with your cards Device ID
In my case this was:

Hi! Pretty hectic time for me right now - lots of exams and school related work but still I managed to finish the AI Core scene as promissed. Right now I'm in the process of planning my next scene to model - the Security Checkpoint (the one you have to go through when entering the station from the dock). I even made a simple sketch of the room just to know the primary elements I have to model (usualy I just do whatever is in my head but I finally realized that I WILL need some kind of plan to finish this right). On the positive side of things my AI Core got two comments in the Finished Work>3D section of CGTalk.com gallery (see for yourself: [link] ). It may sound pathetic BUT last time I submitted my work there I got nothing so yeah... someone noticed it this time and I'm happy with that.

Hello people! It's been a while (19 days) since my last entry - all is relative of course and someone might say that it's only a short break from my stupid journal entry. Anyway. Christmas time is over (what a relief - there is only so much of green, red and gold I can take per year) and now it's time for the new years party!!!! Yeah... well for some people at least - i'll be 'partying' on my beloved chair in front of my beloved computer (not that I have anything against sitting in front of my comp - that's my favorite activity). Wherever you'll be on that night I hope that you have a great time and I want to wish you a happy new year!!!

Overall, people left 1,481 comments and added my deviations to their favourites 123 times, while I commented 3,923 times, making about 3.83 comments per day since I've joined DA. This means that I gave 26 comments for every 10 that I received.

So... it has been a while since my last entry - not much happening in my life so I guess that's normal. A while ago I've stumbled across some concept art from a film that Blur studio ( [link] ) was working on - Mindbridge. Some of those concepts can be seen on Feng Zhu's web page but there is nothing about the film itself on Blurs site - what's up with that? That would be one awesome SF movie but even using google i can't find anything concrete about the project current status. Maybe you know something about that? Was it aborted or what? That would be really bad IMO because these days you don't see so many good sci-fi movies being released... and by "good sci-fi" I mean something in the lines of Aliens (no remakes & sequels please!!! have mercy on one of the greatest sci-fi sagas - they already tried to waste it with Alien: Resurrection but apperently it managed to stand it's ground), Final Fantasy:TSW and generaly films that go further in the future than 20-50 years or something like that.

BTW: have you heard about the new Doom movie? I don't know what to think anymore... a Doom movie that's not on Mars, there are no creatures from hell in it and instead of space marines you get some SWAT team?... oh and the whole movie is apparently about some virus (wow... how original - the 2 Resident Evil movies weren't enough it appears). What were they thinking? Why is it even called Doom? I understand that Doom3 has... well... "not so complex" plot but come on! You have a base on mars, some scientists, teleports and monsters from hell - there are at LEAST a couple of things you can do with that indegrients to make an interesting sci-fi flick.

Hi everyone! Last week I finally got my Half Life 2 copy and... well... it's THE best fpp game i've played to this date - perfection is the right word. Too bad i've finished it and now I have to wait for Half Life 3 (yes, another open ending). Apart from that I found some strenght to run Photoshop and finish the v2 textures for the Dock. I'll post an update in the next few days (I hope... oh the laziness).

Rant:
Hi everyone! Right now i'm waiting for my preordered copy of Half Life 2 to arrive. I got an email from the online store today which said they run out of copies and will have to get more before they can send me mine. They promised to do their best to send all preordered copies by the end of the week but... I don't know... guess I'll have to wait and see what happens. Funny thing is that someone who pre-ordered will get the game much later actually than someone who just went to some shop on the release date. Well at least after reading some user opinions about the game (the lucky bastards who have it already ) I know that the game is worth waiting another few days for (not a common thing for games these days). Besides waiting for Half Life 2 I was able to do one more thing: install OSX on my pc using a great PPC emulator called PearPC. Not much to work with since it runs about 20 times slower than it should (take your CPU speed, divide by 20 - that's how 'fast' it runs), but i'm glad that things are heading in the right direction. Oh and i'm trying out some html formatting in the journal... if it looks good when submitted i'm gonna use that style for my next journals too.

What's the topic about? THE SWITCH ofcourse. "WTF?!!" some might think... well... I figured one day that maya runs a lot better under linux (interface wise) so I've decided to get rid of the good-old-and-comfortable XP and install Fedora Core 2. Reasons?

- maya runs better (under windows my marking menus in maya 6 slow down after the scene gets complicated)
- i can install FireGL drivers on my old R8500 (that's a BIG plus, can't do that under windows)
- new versions of shake are available (I found out how great app it is thanks to zoomzoom)
- linux has better memory management (or so they say, but with 1GB windows still uses swap even if it has ~750MB of phisical mem free - what the hell is up with that shit???!!!)
- always good to learn something new
- check out this [link] sweet gnome mod - how can you NOT like it?

This is my second attempt at switching to linux. I hope this one goes better... I'm going to install W2k on a 5GB partition for purposes of... scanning and printing - damn Lexmark didn't bothered to write Linux drivers for the P3120 all-in-one.

Anyone seeking good S-F interior/object design examples? I recommend that you take a look at the Aliens: Colonial Marines comic series. Pretty sweet drawings there with objects like space stations (H126 was inspired by one of the designs in that comic), ships, vechicles, weapons and also very good interior examples (dark corridors, sci-fi enviroment elements like airlocks, monitors, computer consoles and other tech equipment). A lot of good ideas that may inspire you, not to mention that the comic is a fantastic read to all who love the Alien(s) series

Yep, today is a great day. Here I am sitting on that boring programming class, as usual reading CgTalk and... WHOOP! There I see it: Alias announced Maya 6!

From what I've learned today there are quite a few nice features added! Many people are complaining for the lack of some spectacular things, but I still think it's a good upgrade. For a start: MR supports the shader glow node now and many other features like particle motion blur! Man, I waited forever for this shit! There's a new trax editor, an integrated web browser and (as i've heard on cg talk) some improvement to shading network management (maybe folders in hypershade???!!! - that would be SW33T ^^), a new bevel, automatic image sequence handling, a couple of times faster subdivs, overall speed improvments and lots of others!!!

Seems that Alias decided mainly to improve existing functions other than introducing new ones. That's good IMO.

Oh! And one more thing: XSI 4 is out too! Busy day today, eh?

Yup, it's finally time for a short break and that means no algebra, electro-technology (I really don't know how these subjects are named in english so this is pretty a straight 'brute force' translation) or programming classes 'til 16.04.2004. Hooray!... or something like that.

Anyway I finally found the strenght within me to start working on my project (still named Project 02) and as you can see some progress has been made. I can't really tell how long the final animation will be or give you any outline on the story for two reasons: the project is still in my head under the 'under construction' category so the final shape is still an unknown even to me and I wouldn't want to spoil anything. IF the project will be completed - you'll find out for yourself, if not... well... let's just say that right now that's not an option ^^' . That's it for now.

As for the DevArt related stuff: the biggest change is that I've decided to regularly comment submissions under the 3-Dimensional Art category. Why? I think people like getting comments on their work, so the question would really be 'why not?'. And this is what DA is made for after all - to show the world your stuff and find out what others think about it. Why only 3dArt? Well since there are so many submissions daily that's all that I can manage plus, I know a thing or two about 3D and maybe sometimes I can give a little advice (I hardly can imagine myself doing that under any other category).
Another thing is that I joined the 3D-Club [link] . Seems like a really nice community out there ^^

Latest thing for me? I've discovered an awesome album by Aphex Twin. It's called "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2" and I think It's great. I can listen to it all day without getting bored and/or disturbed from my work (8h minimum for Maya daily since it's easter break ^^).

All right... i've been a little lazy lately but this weekend i'm planing on playing with my beloved Maya 4.5 Unlimited. I don't have any specyfic idea what i'm gonna make, but who know what may bump into my brain.

I've spent the last weekend mostly on downloading Lovehina manga scans with edonkey (man! 400MB - 1 week of downloading - 24h/day!!!). I'm so fucked up that when i start somethin' i just gotta finish it - so since i have all the manga volumes why not downloading some episodes? I guess this will take about 2-3 weeks with Kazaa and eMule. Next objective after that? The OST ofcourse and then burn all the stuff to cd's and forget about it eventually. Man I'm SOOO fucked up at times.

It was a good week for me, but i had to get rid of my precious mouse (old Logitech Pilot PS/2). The poor thing has given up the ghost . I had to buy a new one... With my short funds I could not buy optical logitech so i bought a4tech (optical).
