        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ From time to time I'll hear questions from other artists concerning artistic pathways.<br /><br />It probably stems from seeing my work over the years.  Early in my career I was given a tremendous opportunity to draw the first Prophet book for Image Comics.  I had years of inking experience behind me but I had never drawn a full comic book prior to that experience.  The first issue sold nearly a half million copies.  My first foray into penciling/inking was quite a spectacle...  Looking back, it's one of the most cringe-worthy books from the 90's.  That was a little over 20 years ago.  When I returned to the comic book field I was a different artist th ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ I saw this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPk6chRXDDg on :iconbrohawk: 's page and it really hit home for me.  Eric Powell is an amazingly talented writer/artist [ The Goon ] and he put together a very funny video that encourages creators and fans to support independent comics.  Please watch it and spread the word!<br /><br />I have an idea.  It may bother some creators that have decided Marvel and DC don't give back enough or should take more responsibility for the industry, etc, etc...         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ PART FOUR: Self Publishing and Working on Spec<br /><br />One way to get noticed by bigger publishers is to self publish your own comic book.  Obviously, this requires quite a bit of work.  A story needs to be written, penciled, inked [ optional ], colored [ optional ] and lettered.  You also need some capital to pay for printing costs and some type of game plan when approaching distribution.  But the biggest factor is the time it takes to create enough of a story to publish.  If you're out of school, most likely you're working at some kind of job to pay your bills.  Managing your time properly to put a book out requires discipline and passion.  It's o ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Nothing has helped my drawing more than Life Drawing.  I find that the majority of comic book artists are looking for that something special to take them to the next level and refuse to try Life Drawing.<br /><br />There's a few reasons I believe they convince themselves that they shouldn't or don't have to go down that road:<br /><br />1] They've decided that they don't want to get too realistic and Life Drawing doesn't have anything to do with comic book art<br /><br />2] They'll suck at it. And all of a sudden they'll be in a room full of artists and they'll be back at the end of the line. It's an ego thing.  Life Drawing is hard.<br /><br />Both seem like valid arguments.<br /><br />But  ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Man, I wish I dared to fail more.  I wish I would of taken more chances when I was first starting out in this business.<br /><br />I wish I would of gone to art school and had the frame of mind to try new techniques and draw things I didn't want to draw.  Sadly, I know myself pretty well and I probably wouldn't have been open to any sort of illustration that wasn't drawn in the comic book styles I was following at the time.<br /><br />I was too cowardly to really try painting and I loved Frazetta's work so much.  Still do.  I loved the way Mike Golden and Marshall Rogers would draw backgrounds.  But I wouldn't dare try to work on my perspective.<br /><br />Why?  Because I ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ I just read this article and I think everyone on DA should read it too.<br /><br />http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2009/09/i_will_not_read.php<br /><br />Did you read it?  Switch up the "script" aspect of it and replace it with Artwork Spec and now exhale.<br /><br />Almost once a week I get hit by a friend or friend of a friend that has a GREAT IDEA FOR A GRAPHIC NOVEL.  Sometimes it's simply a stranger I've met at a party.  Usually, and this is my favorite part, the GN would make a great movie.  That's always the beauty of it.  The GN is merely a vehicle to get their idea in the hands of a movie exec that can option it as a film.<br /><br />So, bottom line, yo ]]></media:text>
