says her design has got more people talking about Darfur conflict than she ever thought.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Plesner, one of the group of designers trying to raise awareness of the violence in Sudan's Darfur region,
created an image of a child victim of the conflict holding a tiny dog and a trademark patterned Louis Vuitton handbag.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Sea Turtle. A mature nesting female [about 30 years old] usually returns to the same beach where it was hatched to create a nest. Using its hind flippers, it digs a hole 40 to 50 cm deep. The female will lay 150 to 200 eggs in the hole, refill it with sand and then head back to the ocean. Incubation takes two months. When the eggs hatch, these hatchings dig their way out and head to the ocean.

Â Â Â Â Â Â African Elephant Female elephants can start breeding at age 12. Once a female becomes pregnant, the baby is born between 630 to 660 days later. This is the longest gestation period of any land animal. The baby elephant -- called a calf -- weighs about 90 to 113 kg and stands about 1 metre tall. It is able to walk only two hours after it is born.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Giraffe Giraffes breed throughout the year, but most often after the rainy season. After gestation period of about 14 to 15 months, a two-metre tall baby giraffe, called a calf, is born. Â Â Â Â Â Â Orangutan Mothers raise one child at a time. The child is not weaned for up to three years and rides on its mother's back during at the time. Female usually have one child every six years. This approach tends to produce offspring that are given large amounts of care and nurturing.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Octopus Within two months after mating, the female releases up to 500,000 eggs! The female will care for the eggs by gently cleaning them with her suckers. Soon after the eggs hatched, the female dies. The tiny hatchlings are carried about in the water currents where they feed on plankton. Only one or two out of 200,000 hatchlings survive to the adult stage. Now that's survival of the fittest!

_{Â Â Â Â Â Â One of the world's foremost physicists, Michio Kaku, has put his academic mind to some of science fiction's other concepts, such as teleportation and force fields, and is convinced that they, too can become reality.

Â Â Â Â Â Â At Duke University, Kaku explains, researchers funded by the military were able in 2006 to render a microscopic object invisible to microwave radiation. Then, a few months ago, researchers at Cal Tech and in Germany achieved the same result with visible light.

Â Â Â Â Â Â They were able to achieve invisibility to red and green light. Single colours of light can be bent in a way consistent with invisibility on a microscopic scale using nanotechnology, Kaku says.

Â Â Â Â Â Â This has a huge potential on the battelfield [no wonder the military is seriously interested!]. Imagine a tank is being invisible to enemy forces. No wonder the Pentagon is bankrolling research in this field. "The next step is to do a large object at one light colour.," Kaku says. "Within 10 years, we may be able to make an object completely invicible to one colour of light."

Â Â Â Â Â Â And that is only one of the seemingly outrageous accomplishments in the works that Kaku discusses in his new book,Physics of the Impossible.

Â Â Â Â Â Â While the chances of someone being teleported -- as in the recent hit movie Jumper -- is highly unlikely, Kaku points out that teleportation of an inorganic molecule has already been achieved.

Â Â Â Â Â Â And how about the fact that, while time travel poses philosophical questions [why to you want to go back or the future?] that can twist your mind like trying to squeeze water out of a soaking wet towel, on principle it does not violate the known laws of physics.

Â Â Â Â Â Â In The Physics of Impossible, Kaku discusses phasers, force fields, teleportation and time travel. While Kaku is a fan of science fiction, his work is nothing of the sort. His conclusions are measured probabilities based on the facts.

Â Â Â Â Â Â In the introduction of the book, he warns against ruling out great possibilities because "in my own short lifetime, I have seen seemingly impossible become established fact over and over."

Â Â Â Â Â Â Commenting on his book, which was published in March, Kaku says: "We are taking ideas that are usually the property of science fiction and we are looking at them with a very serious analysis with the most recent advances in physics."

Â Â Â Â Â Â "Science is doubling every 10 years -- it's almost too much information to print. As a result, the public is really quite unaware of the breakthroughs that we are looking forward to cover the next few decades."

Â Â Â Â Â Â How is it possible to make something invisible?

Â Â Â Â Â Â As Kaku himself writes in his month's edition of Natural History, a beam of light bends at a particular angle when it enters a given substance, such as glass, and then keeps going in a straight line. But what if you could control that angle at will, so that, for instance, it changed continuously from point to point in the glass?

Â Â Â Â Â Â If a beam of light could create its own path -- slithering around an object's atoms like a snake -- and exit the material along the same line it entered, then the object could be invisible," Kaku writes.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Researchers at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and Imperial College in London were able to achieve that with microwaves in 2006.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Kaku believes that using metamaterials, a substance with optical properties not found in nature [man made for sure or yet to be invented] scientists will be able to eventually render subjects invisble...[thus The Invicible Man in comics will come true someday!].

Â Â Â Â Â Â Another seemingly impossible idea Kaku deals with is travel outside of our solar system. While the concept of bringing a mega-size starship with hundreds of people aboard another star is not likely, he says NASA is making advances toward sending billions of self-reproducing nanosized exploration vessels throughout the galaxy.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Through many of these proposals are projected in the distant future, there are some more immediate changes ahead.

Amadeo Modigliani's life as an artist was marred by poverty, stormy relationships and drug use, and cut short by an early death.

Now in Spain's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum has put together an exhibition that allows a profound re-evalutaion of this Italian's meteoric career by placing his work in the context of his greatest influences.

In 1906 Modigliani left a cultured life in the bosom of a Sephardic Jewish family in Livorno, Italy, to move to the bohemian boiler-house that was Paris'Montmarte.

There he toured art galleries and was deeply impressed by the vitality and suggestive power of works by Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

Not long after, he met Picasso and began to rent a ramshackle studio next to him in the Bateau-Lavoir at 13 Rue Ravignan.

Unable to sustain the comfortable existence he had enjoyed with his parents in Tuscany, Modigliani easily fell into a lifestyle characterized by the abuse of alcohol -- including powerful absinthe -- hashish smoking and extroverted behaviour.

He painted with exaggerated gestures, sometimes shouted at his models and often destroyed canvases when they did not match expectations.

His only solo exhibition while alive, at the Berthe Weill gallery in December 1917, was raided by police for being "scandalous." Modigliani was rumoured to have slept with most if not all models he had portrayed nude.

"Finally we are able to evaluate Modigliani alongside the great painters who inspired him," said Guillermo Solana, the Spanish museum's curator. "As you'll see, he comes out rather well, reinforced even, by the comparison." _{The Associated Press}

_{Â Â Â Parthenon is reflected on the windows of Greece's new Acropolis Museum in Athens Tuesday, July 31, 2007. An 1930 Art Deco building at No. 17 Dionyssiou Areopagitou Street, built by Vassilis Kouremenos, a graduate of Paris' Ecole des Beaux Arts stands between the new museum and the Acropolis. Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis mentioned at a news conference that the building would be removed. Greece's archaeological council voted in early July to revoke the listed status of the more significant Art Deco building and allow its demolition.

Â Â Â The view of the Parthenon is ruined by two buildings, and a plan to demolish them has opened a fierce debate about sacrificing Greece modern treasures to showcase its ancient history. One of the two buildings is a 1930s art deco gem designated a monument in its own right. The other is owned by Oscar winning composer Vangelis Papathanassiou of "Chariots of Fire" fame.

it would not release an Afrikaans translation of the comic following complaints of racism, local media reported Saturday.

Â Â Â Publisher Human & Rousseau said it had cancelled its Afrikaans version of the book in the popular Belgian series because it portrayed Africans in an offensive way, according to SABC radio.

Â Â Â "We felt that it depicted indigenious African people in an unflattering ... stereotypical fashion," spokesman Carina Diedericks-Hugo was qouted as saying on the SABC news website.

"We felt that we have a particular situation in South Africa and that depiction of indigenous people, we can't agree on that."

Â Â Â In the book, author Remi depicts the white hero's adventures in the Congo against the backdrop of an idiotic, chimpanzee-like native population that eventually comes to worship Tintin-and his dog-as gods.

Â Â Â Afrikaans, the language of the descendants of the South Africa's early Dutch settlers, was seen as the language of the oppressive apartheid regime. Attempts to enforce Afrikaans as a medium of instruction was one of the triggers of a June 16, 1976, uprising by students in Soweto.

Â Â Â Much has been done to improve the image of Afrikaans, and it isone of South Africa's 11 official languages, but sensitivities over its use remain.

Â Â Â The American bookstore chain Borders said this month that it was removing the book from the children's section of its stores in Britain after a customer complained the work was racist. Similar steps will be taken at the company's stores in the United States.

Â Â Â In Vancouver, there has been a revival of graffiti vandalism in the last year, said Daniel Paquin, the co-ordinator fo the city's Graffiti Management Program.

Â Â Â "There's a new wave of graffiti Vancouver and it's been noticed by the police," said Paquin, who has headed the program since last April.

can drive people nuts. That's the theory of Dr. Graziella

Magherini, a Florence psychiatrist and the president of

Italy's Art and Psychology Association.

It seems the Renaissance sculpture can trigger

nausea, aggression and even destructive urges in overly

sensitive and cultivated onlookers. In the past ten years,

more than 100 people have been taken to hospital in

Florence suffering from the David syndrome

as they were absorbed in contemplation of great works

of art.

Artistic intoxication is caused by a combination

of factors, including the stress of the trip, an "overdose"

of beautiful art and the sensitivity of the person, says

Magherini. "We should not forget that a work of art is

a powerful stimulus and can stimulate memories in our

unconscious, sometimes triggering crisis," she says.

And it appears americans are the most

sensitive to the syndrome. Italians, meanwhile,

seem to be immune -- as are the Japanese, who

she describes as "so organized in their sightseeing,

they rare have time for emotional attacks."}

I was clearing my stuff. I found some old work

that I would like to try it. A photo print

of my paper sculptures [actual size of paper

sculpture was five by four feet!] I wanted to try them

in another medium. On the other note I still have some

projects. Dust off a project you put on the backburner

ages ago and give it another try. *sigh*}

CONTEST SUMMARY:

I currently have four tattoos, and I definately plan

to get more!! ^_^ I'm holding a tattoo contest to

see if I can find that next design!! Are you any good

at designing tattoos? Do you want to try something

new? Whatever your reason is... give this contest

a try!! There are prizes!! lol

RULES:

- MUST include at least TWO of the following objects:

a nautical star, 1 or 2 piercing needles, a lotus flower,

a heart, glowsticks, body jewelry (that look like they

are going through skin), and/or DDR arrows. Hehe!

- MUST be either black & gray OR colored with neon colors!

- MUST be at least 2x2 inches, but no bigger than 7x7 inches!

- Other than that, have fun designing, and be creative!!

PRIZES:

- *First Place* - Winner will recieve a 3-MONTH

SUBSCRIPTION to DA (courtesy of me) and will be

featured in my journal and signature... as well as

on my MySpace!! I MIGHT get the tattoo somewhere

the composer. "Ecce Cor Meum" Behold My Heart

is a commissioned piece that took eight years to

produce. McCartney was invited by the president

of Magdalen College,Oxford, to "compose

something to set the seal of a new concert hall

for the college." President Smith said his hope

was for "a choral piece which could be sung by

young people the world over in the same way

that Handel's Messiah is."The album is recorded

was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with soprano

Kate Royal,the Boys of King's College Choir,

Cambridge,the Boys of Magdalen College Choir,

Oxford, and the Academy of St. Martin in the fields.

I would like to incorporate those within the design. Just

as about to continue. I've been plague by nasty coughs,

_{Vivian Reiss doesn't just capture a face when she

paints her portraits. Her work echoes the soul and culture

of her subjects.

An artist for over 30 years, Reiss makes a succesful living

with her oil paintings on canvas, travelling the world to

create her pieces.

"I just came back from a large project in Japan called

Echigo Tisumari Trienial," she said. "I lived in a small

farming community in the mountains for two months,

in a town of one hundred fifty people. I did eighteen

portraits of the town inhabitants.

Over 300,000 people came to see the project, which

she installed in the town's abandoned school house.

"It was about man's relation to the land. They've

lost a lot of their population due to lack of argiculture,"

she said. "I've built storehouse of their culture, their

emotional life, their history."

Reiss was born in New York City and moved to

Toronto in the mid-'70's. Last November she

opened her own gallery dedicated to her work

called VReiss.

"It's very successful. When we have openings,

we are packed out the door." Her affinity with

art came naturally to her as a child.

"I sometimes say I came out of the womb

with a paintbrush in my hand," she said.

"A serious push towards my career was a

trip I went on when I was nine with my

parents to the Prado in Madrid

[the main art museum.] I just didn't

want to leave, that's when I decided

to be a painter."

She nurtured her talent by taking

classes at the Museum of Modern Art

in New York City and attended the

Boston Museum School after graduating

from high school.

Throughout her career, she has also

traveled to Africa, China, and Kyrgzstan

to paint. One of her exhibits, Canadians

In The Arts, a collection of portraits

of Canadian artists, is on display in the

Canadian Embassy in Tokyo. It is a

project she has been working on for

ten years.

"People ask me about my inspiration,

and I say it comes from working, love

of life, curiousity, intellect," she said.

"My inspiration can come from my

front yard or still life in studio. It could

be in Toronto. It could be in China."

A German art student briefly took up a place
among China's famed Terracotta Warriors ...

over the weekend --- only to be discovered,
disrobed and sent home!

Pablo Wendel snuck into a pit housing around 2,000
ancient lifesize pottery warriors and horses on
Saturday afternoon, donned the military costume
he had made himself, [I guess he perfected his mime pose?]
something like below...

and took up a position on a small pedestal
he had brought along.

He stood there, motionless and unblinking, [Did he made it?]

for a couple of minutes until police found him! [Busted!, not
convincingly enough?] the Xinhua news agency said.

The twenty six year old had his costume confiscated and
was sent from Xian, [Lucky you, you weren't punished for
hard labour?]

The World Heritage site where the warriors are located,
back to the eastern city of Hangzhou, where he studies
performance art. [Not yet mastered I guess?]

Eka for sometime now. He'd just finished his very own
website Ekaputra Abdul Jabar! He's got a collection
of excellent photographs and some vector artwork
in there!

Did you know that odds are you're TRICHROMATIC?
Relax, it's not serious. In fact, it means you were
born with three retinal colour channel -- red, green
and blue -- letting you distinguish between all colours.
But about eight percent of men and one percent of
women are DICHROMATIC, or colour blind.

Colour blindness is actually a colour deficiency. Most
commonly, dichromatic people can't differentiate
between reds and greens; less often, the confusion
involves blues and yellows.

People who are colour deficient are often unaware
of their condition, notes the Canadian Optometry
Association; they just assume that every one sees
things as they do.

Some lines of work-police officer, pilot,certain
professions in the Canadian forces - require
minimum colour vision standards.

But being colour blind was no obstacle to
Mister Rogers, the popular TV host; or to
Emerson Moser, who was Crayola's
senior crayon maker and revealed only
in 1990 that he couldn't discern all the colours.

I am looking for a stock of a woman reading a book

T a g
Essentially a stylised signature, featuring the
tagger's [or writer's] name, and normally in
just one colour. It was the first from of modern
graffiti to appear, and because it's relatively
simple to render, it can be painted quickly
in lots of places.

C h a r a c t e r
Cartoon characters from popular culture
are often incorporated in graffiti, whether
it's Spider-Man, Mickey Mouse or anything
else of the moment. It's a way of attracting
attention to the artwork initially, so that
can people can explore it further.
Sometimes the character will be used
to represent a letter.

P i e c e
Short for masterpiece. An artwork needs to
use at least three colours to be considered
a masterpiece. This phenomenon began
once writers learned how to customize
their spray cans to make the flow bigger:
a standard can didn't really lend itself
well to large works.

Â Â Â Â For hundred years after his birth, Rembrandt is drawing more people than ever to his native country for everything from art exhibits and walking tours to a musical.

Â Â Â Â The 17th-century Dutch master painter was born July 15, 1606. The anniversary celebration will stretch into 2007.

Â Â Â Â In just one highlight of the season, Rembrandt was paired up with Italian Renaissance painter Caravaggio in a show attracting droves of visitors, helping to make this a bumper year for Dutch tourism.

Â Â Â Â On the other note I just registered as a member
in the online Illustrator World. Hopefully it will motivates
me more to create more vector based art.

Â Â Â Â Graffiti marks one of mankind's first ways to express
himself creatively, perhaps even the first. The Stone Age
paintings discovered in 1940 in the Lascaux Caves of France
featured convincing representations of animals, as well as
handprints. The unique preservation of the city of Pompeii
through its destruction by Mount Vesuvius has also provided
us with fascinating examples of early graffiti. The vulgar
slogans discovered aren't too distant from the kind of scrawled
messages you might see today, ranging fromthe equivalent
of tagging to derogatory sexual comment.

Â Â Â Â Then there's 'Kilroy Was Here' from the
Second World War. U.S. servicemen disseminated the familiar
figure with a large nose peering over a wall whatever they
travelled. It even appeared on enemy pillboxes.

Â Â Â Â Other than sporadic exceptions, such
as the Los Angeles Cholos movement of the 1930's, and
hobo signatures on Chicago freight trains, it wasn't really
until the late 60's that the current graffiti culture started
to form, with Philadelphia artists such as Cornbread and
Cool Earl being among the first with their tags. Cornbread
started out by trying to impress a girl, writing 'Cornbread
Loves Cynthia' on said girl's school desk and even her bus
route. Later, he famously managed to tag the Jackson 5's
private jet. The different lettering styles that emerged from
Philadelphia still have an influence today, with newcomers
typically learning how to create these first.

Â Â Â Â The New York movement started at
a similar time, and the city is home to some of the most
famous writers. You could start to see the kind of effect it was
having by 1971, when The New York Times published an article
on Taki 183, a writer from Washington Heights [183 was his
street number]. Taki was neither the first graffiti artist nor
a particularly notable one, but he was one of the first to be
recognised outside the subculture itself.

Â Â Â Â The subway trains in New York travel
throughout the city's five boroughs of Manhattan, the Bronx,
Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten island. This was in terms of
who had the most tags, rather than the quality of the pieces.
Soon after, writers found that by breaking into train yards,
they could hit many more subway cars in one go, and were
less likely to get caught while they were doing it.
This was where the concept of bombing really took off.

Â Â Â Highly-caffeinated couple Rex and Joyce Advincula founded Inksurge back in 2002. The duo's distinctively human style of digital and hand-drawn work spans illustration, web and print.

Â Â Â Manila doesn't have a long tradition of design to draw on, but studios such as Inksurge, Electro Lychee and Team Manila are fighting to change that. "Graphic design is only just starting to be appreciated here, reveals Inksugre's Rex Advincula.

Â Â Â "Our universities do not offer design courses at all,"
he laments. Given this sorry condition, it's a no surprise that it's taken a while for local design studios to establish themselves. It's meant that training had to be done 'on the job', a process that makes your start-ups ever more difficult.

Â Â Â Now that they're beginning to make a mark, studios like Inksurge have a pretty cool outlook. "The Internet is supposed to bring like-minded people together," says Rex. "We just do what we like and share it with the world in the hope of meeting new amigos."

Â Â Â And as creative talent begins to find its way back to Manila, the scene continues to grow. "There are loads of creatives who studied abroad and are comihng back now. They all have a united goal to make Manila a much more exciting place.
