I also bought "A Year of Mornings: 3191 Miles Apart" by Maria Vettese & Stephanie Congdon Barnes. The concept is intriguing, each day for a year each woman took a photograph in the morning, always before noon, and then posted them as diptychs at their shared blog. The book's title is a reference to the fact that they live 3191 miles apart. I first came upon the blog some months ago and the idea seemed to me simple but still demanding. How do you find inspiration every day to take at least one decent photograph and post it? Most people do similar things each day, with occasional variations; it would take a lot of attention to detail to pick each day a moment to capture on camera. And so, I liked the idea and the challenge to capture the everyday minutiae of mornings and decided to buy the book.

Most photographs have a calm aura, seem simple but have little details that make them more interesting. Not all photos are of equal quality and some might seem repetitive. Some diptychs display photos that are quite similar, almost as if they had discussed it beforehand, and other are very different. However, all of them are connected by the same concept. There is little excitement in the photos but they make for a nice, serene book that can be browsed many times. My complaint is that some diptychs are small and it is hard to properly see them.

A second book with the same concept is scheduled for this summer, a photograph each day in the evening, titled "A Year of Evenings".

I am wondering if it would be interesting to do something similar, perhaps a photo each week? It would be challenging since I take erratically photographs, upload sporadically and I don't carry my camera (my mobile phone's doesn't really count!) with me at all times.

I find that inspiration is somewhat hard to find these days, I have ideas but I am not so good at realizing them. Maybe this is because I haven’t been much out lately. I have some photos buried in my hard drive but I am not very satisfied with them. I also have a nice Polaroid but I haven’t got around using it and now I am reading that Polaroid film might not be produced anymore – oh the irony!

Such heat dazes me and makes feel rather lazy. Every time I go out, it feels that I am entering a furnace. The glare of the sun is so intense; as if I it reaches through my skin and tears me up. Fortunately, I don't have to go out a lot during the day, so I am more or less staying inside. I am just lying in my room, listening to music and reading a lot of books.

Every couple of years, there is a certain aesthetic that becomes popular; I am sure that everyone could name a couple of those “trends”. Nothing wrong with that, at times I might like them, other times I am indifferent (or don’t like them). But… I would rather prefer it if there was some variety, maybe it is just me being bored by seeing similar photos or maybe my taste is different. While each of these photos might be actually good (and better than mine!) and this current aesthetic can be interesting, I cannot help feeling that in essence they are all the same. I do like some of them and might even find them inspirational; it’s just that I feel that I am seeing a constant repetition of just one idea/concept.

Photographing something and making it seem at least interesting is difficult, I have found out that banality is a curse for me (and a lot of other things, but let’s not get into that). But, photographs that all look similar, are not too good either. Or maybe it is just safety in numbers? If you see all the time variations of the same thing, you get used to it and do not realize that it is more or less the same. And slowly, you start to emulate the same aesthetic and you support it. It’s a circle.

Random comment: I really think that a picture of someone in underwear, no matter how beautiful or cute (underwear or person) isn’t necessarily a fashion portrait…

In any case, I find it very interesting to browse through the various categories here at deviantArt, its like a glimpse to what’s popular now, what is considered underground, what is neither of that, what’s the style of art most people employ/like/follow etc. And despite all those deviations that seem similar (or are just doodles…), there are a lot of interesting things lurking around.

Random fact: I never knew that Death Note was so popular, but judging by the amount of fan-art that I am seeing, there is quite a big following. It is a good manga (and the anime is good) and the plot is quite interesting. Light is devious

In real life, I study mechanical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), which is quite rewarding.

Last autumn I finally bought my camera, a Canon Digital Ixus 50. I like the idea of photographing and capturing random and not so random moments and so I decided to experiment and see how I do. I decided that an account might be of help since I will hopefully get feedback and constructive comments. It might even be inspiring. I definitely like browsing devianart, there are many interesting artists here!
