Looks like Hanabi gets to remain healthy a while longer. (I really do torture my characters a lot)

To be honest, right now I'm seeing this as a blessing. My teachers seem to keep stacking more work on me despite Comps coming up really soon and I'm really not sure I could stack on another comic as well.
My Comps exam is taking place on Nov. 30th and Dec. 2nd followed by an oral defense on the 8th. Wish me luck.

Right now, I'm taking another break from SDL. I need to focus on my studies just a little bit longer and I want to work on a few other projects such as my comic duel against

Round 1 for the SDL Championship is actually a rematch for me. It's against

On a funny note, appearance-wise, Oda is like Mario while Kiki is like Sonic.

Preparing for comps has been exhausting. When I'm not drawing I'm reading, and when I draw it's because I've had enough of reading. There are a few more weeks left and I'm trying to cram in what I can. Wish me luck.

I WAS INVITED TO THE SDL TOURNAMENT!!!

I could not believe it! I mean, I did the math! Odds of getting in were slim for me.

Still preparing for Comps and, well, there was a bit of a bittersweet moment in regards to that. So long as I handle my time well (REMINDER TO MYSELF) I should be able to juggle Comps and the tournment. Trust me, it's nice to have the occassional study break. Anyway, still pouring over books. I can not tell you how much I'm looking forward to reading something of my choice again.

And a reminder, kiriban at 8000. It's still going to be a while before it reaches that but just giving an early heads up.

Anyway, the break....
Reason for the break is that I need to study for my Comps exam which is coming up really soon. I'll need as much time as I can get to study for it.
Now, in the event that I do make it into the SDL Championship, I will participate. There's a chance but it all depends on how these 3 duels go and how others do. The timing between my Comps exam and the tournament work out for me, not perfectly but it still works in a way.

Hmmmm, results are in and I was 1-2. That puts me one step closer but it's looking less likely unless I get really lucky.

In other news, *ShikakuSuika is holding another mini-contest. If I can think of something, I'll try to enter it depending on how things go with studying.

Since I'm trying to see if I can get into the SDL championship, I really piled on the duels. So far I have 3 lined up with a possible fourth (possible but still unsure).

Unfortunately I couldn't finish my entry for the SDL Couples contest

. I put off finishing it for too long and I had a presentation to prepare last week that was also due on the 29th. I wanted to work on it when I came back from school but that would have meant coloring it in less than three hours. I'll still post it once I have the chance.

Speaking of other contests, the SDL Halloween contest is coming up and I'll try to submit something for that.

Decided to finally do the character meme:

Write out the names of your characters and explain:
1) how you thought of their name
2) what made you create the character in the first place
3) how the character has changed over time (if they have changed)
4) any random fun fact about that character

Namida
1) Namida got her name back when I was in that stage of giving Japanese names to all my characters. I think every anime/manga fan has been there before. For those who don't speak Japanese, "tear" (as in "cry") is the translation. There were times after some friends recommended I change her name due to it not fitting her setting but the name stuck and I can't bring myself to change it. I've even come up with story ideas that explain her name in the story's setting.

2) Originally she was created for a short story idea I had a while ago. It was only a chapter long and based on a song or two.

3) Character-wise, not much. Setting-wise, a lot. She's been in three story ideas that I've had; first was the short story, the other was a longer story and she was a co-lead character, and in the third she is the main character. It was during the second story that I started to figure out better ideas on her personality and background.

4) Namida is based off of 3 anime/manga girls: Yuki from Megatokyo, another girl from KareKano, and another girl from a manga by a mangaka whose style I really liked. I forget the manga title and mangaka's name though (it was really obscure and the books are back home).
Namida made her public debut when I submitted my entry for KumoriCon 2004's manga contest.

I've seen the character question meme lately and I'm thinking about doing it but I don't know who to do or who you guys might like to know about. Anyone want to hear about a particular OC? For those who haven't seen it, the meme asks:

I might make one exception to the "no OCT 'til December for me" rule. SDL is holding a championship for this year and they're taking the top 16 into the tournament. I'm working at trying to be in that ranking but we'll see how things go.

The Roogoo contest is over and I didn't win but the whole experience was amazing. Last time I saw the poll, 270+ people voted for me and placed me in 7th. I still can't believe my entry was even up on that list. 60+ people faved "Roogoomin" [link] , people were commenting that they loved it, and it received a ton of pageviews. So thank you thank you thank you everyone who commented, faved it, voted for it, considered voting for it, or even took a quick glance at Roogoomin.

Let's see, what else....

SDL:T is over for me. I didn't make it to the next round. I'm still planning to submit Part 5 of the last round but now that there's no reason to rush it I'm taking my time with it.

I'm sticking to my word that I'm not trying out for another OCT until December. Believe me, after doing this for a while and knowing there are some really good OCTs still holding auditions, it's hard to turn those down and instead read Brower and Miner's essays on Japanese court poetry.
I am going to restart splash page duels for SDL. Also there's an SDL Couples contest coming up and I have some ideas to try out. ~White-Rabbitgirl and I are going to submit something with Kiki and Ichigo. No, not in that manner.

Oh, right. You will be seeing more of Tokyo Kiki sometime in the future. Parara and I are having an independent comic duel; no league, no deadline, no nothin'. So expect a random page to pop in from time to time.

I mean, seriously, I am just blown away by the fact that mine's up on that list. And what people have been saying about it in the comments have been really encouraging. At this point I don't even care if I win or not, this whole thing has been great! "Roogoomin" got a total of 3031 pageviews the day the journal came out!

I "finished" and submitted my SDL:T Round 3 entries. I'm a little mixed on everything about it. I had a lot more planned out for that but I had to cut some corners if I wanted to finish it on time. Although, given everything that happened between the beginning and end of Round 3 (weekend with brother, sister-in-law, and 2 nephews, reading list, moving back to Hawaii, spending time with mom who came over for a few days, and starting school again), I consider myself lucky to finish what I did.

After thinking about it for a while, I decided that after SDL: Tokyo I am not going to try out for any OCTs until December. I have my MA to study for and that's time consuming as it is. I am still going to do SDL splash pages and other personal drawing projects for the sake of staying sane though. Those don't take as much time and I can push back deadlines if need be.

Round 2 of SDL: Tokyo is done and I know for sure that I'm moving on to Round 3. My opponent ~ChihiroSen sent me a note ahead of time saying her scanner was giving her problems and wasn't sure if she could make it in time. Sorry to hear about that Chihirosen. In the mean time I get to take a little break and relax.

Currently I'm working on my entry for Endling's Roogoo contest. I have my idea, it's all planned out, I just need to put it together. I'm going into new territory as well with how I'm putting it together. Wish me luck.

With the summer almost over I'm starting to get nervous about school. There are a lot of OCTs that I want to join but I can't because this semester is going to be intense (a reading list that would make you scream). Plus I don't want to join them when, odds are, I'd have to drop out due to school. *Gauntlet-OCT is one I'm currently debating on since they're giving 4 weeks per round and written entries are allowed.

Well some big news is I got into another tournament, SDL:Tokyo, an SDL tournament that takes place in modern times with our SDL character's descendant.

I have my first opponent, ~akahime-chan's "Massa." There's a week left until the deadline and things are looking good so far. At the rate things are going I should finish just in time. I'm trying a different style than my audition so things are going to get a little interesting on this end.

I have some drawings in the making that I'll submit (hopefully) soon. I'm currently working on a project that has a due date coming up very soon and I've been picking at it for a while now. Once that's done I'll be able to work on other stuff.

As expected, I didn't make it into Miss SDL 2009 but I'm not bummed out by it. The competition was intense this year. I would have considered myself lucky to even get past the audition with this year's competition. Have a look: [link]

My last assignment wasn't as hard as the essay so I was able to do that while working on a few other distractions. I even have some random sketches done in my sketchbook that I'll show later once I work on them a little more. It also gave me some time to think of some drawings ideas that I'll work on a little later hopefully.

Oh, also I'm going to be submitting something for my audition into Miss SDL 2009. Since I now have Suiko as a duelist I can now enter the contest since only female OCs can enter. School is almost done (YEAH!). I just have the essay and one more assignment due next Monday. The good news is I don't have any more finals to deal with. After that I have about 10 days of free time then I head back home for the summer. Sadly I'm not graduating just yet. I still have one more semester to tackle before I'm done.

I've been a little hesitant to do this mostly because of the whole, "What if no one likes it?" mindset but after doing SDL for this long and knowing how to use PS I feel more confident in trying this out. I have my main characters, they have their quirks, I (mostly) have an idea what to do with them... I'm just trying to finalize a few things and do my best to not overdo the planning.

It's nothing like a big, long story. It would most likely be a 4-koma or a comic strip you would see in the newspaper and set "close" to reality. Also I would set it up here on DA.

I'm probably not going to get around to this until after this semester since I have several reports breathing down my neck as it is.

Oh, and curse the 2 users who took the username ideas I was hoping to get.

As far as my "to do" list goes..... we'll see. Again, my reports are taking priority here and I'm going to squeeze in what I can.

Last weekend I went to KawaiiKon in Honolulu and it was a lot of fun. It wasn't the best con I've been to but it ranked pretty high up there. I got to see the AMV contest, a lot of fun panels, the VAs were very funny to listen to, and I took a TON of photos and videos.
My biggest disappointment was the Dealer's Room. I walked in with an empty bag and a list of series' merchandise I was looking for. I walked out of there with a nearing empty bag and thought, "That's it?" The series I was looking for aren't unknown either. Stuff from Lucky Star, Kino's Journey, Negima, Nodame... hardly anything from those. Plenty of "Bleach" stuff though (well over 25% of the stuff there).

In art news, you may have noticed I've been submitting a lot of stuff recently. I was able to finish a lot of stuff that was on my "To do" list and I'm really happy about that. I think I'm getting faster with some of this stuff.
As for my entry into Ebon Spire, I decided to drop it. There's too much school work for me to focus on right now and trying to work on 4 pages of line art and color 8 pages during the weekday is a bit much right now.

Spring Break did turn out to be busy and I didn't get as much stuff done as I originally hoped. I was able to finish my DotM entries and my duel against ~moonlight-fox. I'm tempted to go out and challenge more people now but I want to clear some more stuff on my "to do" list first.

There's something I've been thinking of doing that I'm not particularly happy about. Remember V, my character that I'm entering for the Ebon-Spire OCT? Well.... that might not happen. I have an assignment from school, specifically from the class that gives me the most trouble. The due date for that assignment and the audition deadline are too close to each other and I don't think I can do both without one affecting the other.
I'm kinda sad about thinking of doing that. I'm really attached to V and yet I haven't done anything with her. I almost feel like she's a cursed OC since I also thought of using her to audition for TheCure OCT but decided not to (I forget why right now). I still haven't decided if I'm going to back away from Ebon-Spire but chances are likely.

Spring Break is coming up and I could really use it. Some of my classes are killing me.

Not because of a massive workload but just trying to figure everything out. I'm doing a lot of Classical Japanese translations and the grammer alone is enough to boggle your mind.
Anyway, since Spring Break is coming up and I'll be "kinda" away, I'm trying to get some of my drawings done so I can work on them when I have the chance. I'll still have wifi access and my tablet but I'll be away from my desk and traditional supplies.

And in regards to the title of this journal, I found another SDL-related tournament to audition for: SDL: Tokyo. It's set in the future where SDL is now an underground league and we use descendants of our OCs. I get to redesign Kiki and come up with a new plotline for him.

Oh man, I have horribly mismanaged my time for my IDD exhibition match. I'm really far behind where I would like to be and the deadline is coming up (curse you, school). I'm going to end up trying something I originally planned on trying out later on a different project. I think I can finish in time but it'll be really close.

Since there's a long time between now and the Ebon OCT, I decided to have Kiki be active in SDL again. I'm also thinking of updating his profile and maybe change how he looks a little. Also I'm going to try really hard to work on the Kino drawing and the Halloween drawing during that time (my gawd I'm so late with both).

There is a phishing scam going on. Infected accounts have been posting on other profile pages with stuff like "FInd out who your secret valetine is," or "This person wrote about you in their blog." Don't, under any circumstance, click on the link. It takes you to a site that steals your Deviantart password and gives you a virus.

If you did click on it, run a virus check and immediately change your password. Also, mark the comment as spam (which will hide it). The mods will try to sort it out then.

The main rule of thumb I can figure out is if they say "CLICK HERE," then it's part of the scam.

tournament. The only problem is I keep reading it and it doesn't sound right to me. Either something seems out of character or it sounds like rambling. There's one part (for example) where I can't figure out how to connect topic A with topic B but I feel both are needed.

I'm doing something a little crazy (for me anyway). While I'm working on my part of the IDD, I'm also trying to finish another audition for the SDL Winter Bash. Not sure how that's going to go. I have all my pages sketched out but still need to ink them and color them and the deadline is the end of Tuesday. I was hoping to have more done by now but there was poor timing on my part. I may end up scraping the audition because of the lack of time. In either case, finished or not, I'll post what I have just to show everyone (hopefully finished).

My IDD Round 1 entry is looking good and I'm not too worried about time. I've been focusing on my entry more than the SDL audition. I have a goal set for myself and I'm pretty sure I can make it.

From the sound of it things got crazy for you and you couldn't start the tournament with so much else going on. No hard feelings.

So right now I'm debating whether or not to work on my audition for IDD. All I've done so far is work on character designs, the script, and some page setups but other than that not much else. If I do work on it, it will be the fastest I've ever done a comic and will probably include some corner-cutting where I can. We'll see.
I'm also planning to audition for the SDL Winter Bash. Fortunately I have until Dec. 30th to finish.

Reason for the mini-break is I have a nice break between art projects and I'd like to use that to 1.) Work on my drawing for Yanocchi, 2.) Work on a 20 page report due by the end of the semester

We're still waiting for the audition results but ~Arquimiedes mentioned he's preoccupied at the moment and hopes to have things ready soon. So, we continue to wait.

SDL is holding a Halloween contest. We can put our character into any sort of costume and have them in different themes. Due date is Halloween.

I want to make a character for SLI (SDL's sister league based in Europe). I'm probably not going to be as active with my SLI character as my Mokusetsu "Kiki" character but I wanted to have a character in there anyway.

SDL/SLI is also holding a contest where we can make charms (awards for the leagues). Surprisingly, this has been rather addicting. I've already planned out some ideas and they're not taking me as long as I thought they would. The best part is so far it has been great Photoshop practice. The "Double League" charm in scraps was done entirely on Photoshop, no line art or anything.

By the way, can I ask some of you guys a favor? There are some charms I made where I have more than one version and I can't decide which one I like best. Would anyone be willing to take a look at them and tell me what you think? And sorry but I will only note people who I know.

Surprisingly, school has not been that hard this semester (which always worries me). My lit. class has been much easier recently and my pedagogy class is going well. The only class that's really challenging right now is my classical Japanese course (sooooo much weird grammar).

Well guess what happened on Saturday night. My laptop decided to break something internally....

The screen wasn't coming on no matter what I did but I could still hear it running.
Long story short, I took my laptop down to the Apple store the next day, got it checked out, and the guy said it looks like my graphics card got fried. The good news is my data is still intact and fine and they have the part to repair it. The bad news is I'm without a personal computer for about a week.

Right now I'm using a school computer.

Fortunately this doesn't affect me too much art-wise since I do most of my stuff with pencil and paper. But still....

Anyway if I don't respond right away for the next week, you'll know why.

I've had to take a short break from my work due to a report I had to do but that's now over. So far I think I'm finding some balance between working on comics and school.

I almost have my audition comic ready for Gate of the Underworld. I'm actually going to try something new this time as far as format and look. I still did all the outlines and frames on regular A4 paper but I'm going to make all the pages into one single image and "ink" all the details in on my laptop.

As I was writing this I just found out my result in my duel with

's Caroline [link] . I lost but oh well. Congratulations to ~BLUECHERRIES for her win. Here's a link to her winning entry: [link]

After my duel with ~BLUECHERRIES was finished I challenged duelist

to a ghost story duel. Objectives: Scare your opponent and no fighting. I have a story set up and ready to make into a comic. Fortunately we set the due date at Nov. 8th so there's plenty of time (I say that now....).

(Sorry to all my friends who aren't really interested in tournaments and duels and have continued reading to this point....)

I have another audition I want to try out for

. I have the character chosen and a script ready. I just hope I can finish in time (due date: Oct. 5th). And then, I don't know why I'm even thinking about this, but I am tempted to try out for

. It's a racing tournament and the due date is also the 28th. So far I only trust my ability to keep up with one tournament but I'm so tempted to try out for what I can.

I'm really starting to like photoshop and I think I'm getting better with it. I tried out a few ideas and tricks on my Suiko Machie drawing that I learned from my duel with ~BLUECHERRIES. In fact the Suiko drawing did not take me as long to color as previous coloring projects.

Speaking of my duel, I was able to complete it with plenty of time left. I'm still impressed that ~BLUECHERRIES was able to finish hers so fast. And now we wait for judging.

By the way, to all my friends who went to KumoriCon, I hope everyone had fun over the weekend. I look forward to going back someday.

As far as art goes, I think I've done a lot with my gallery compared to my past year. Submitted a 9 page comic, completed an art trade, tried out for an OC tournament, made an SDL character, colored a mascot contest entry, made a profile, and there's still a handful of other stuff in waiting. I've submitted more stuff here this summer than I did all of last year. ^_^

With my duel with

, I am still waiting for my scanner to arrive. It's still somewhere in the mail and I'm hoping it will arrive tomorrow. The line art is pretty much done but I want to color it in photoshop.

Scanner arrived. All is well.

Earlier I mentioned eyeing the OC tournament

but right now I'm not sure if I do want to try out for it. The main reason is I'm having a hard time thinking up a character and my pre-existing OCs would have to drastically change to fit the setting. it's a steampunk theme and my knowledge of steampunk is very limited.

The other tournament

is still on my radar. I have a character that might be fun to throw into that scenario and she's also a character-type I'm not used to playing with.

Also, another OC tournament popped up that also looks good and it's SDL related (meaning I can use Kiki in it). The current problem... I only want to choose one tournament and I'm sure I'll only have time for one (if I'm lucky this semester). I could try to audition for both and see how things go but again I'm not sure if I could finish both auditions in time. Worth a try I guess.

once I'm back in Hawaii. The only problem I foresee is I have to mail my scanner. It's cheaper than carrying it on the plane with all those extra charges but I'll be scanner-less for a few days. Anyway, I'm really itching to work on my duel since I have something planned out.

Also, I swear I am becoming addicted to OC tournaments/battles. Besides SDL, I'm currently eyeing two tournaments.

I ended up getting the Adobe CS3 Design Standard which has Photoshop AND Illustrator along with 2 extra things I'm still trying to figure out. I'm still trying to figure out how all the new features work. Anyway, to test Photoshop out I made a quick, new ID.

And in other news, beside SDL-related drawings and comics, I've pretty much hit a drawer's block. I'm thinking of trying to work on the 100 theme challenge to help me out.

is due and so far so good. I'm now inking my pages and now have 2 5 fully inked pages that only require shading before being complete. Inking shouldn't take too much time as I've now gotten used to doing it although that does not mean I don't make a mistake now and then (thank gawd for Photoshop).

I do have some other SDL-related stuff I'm planning to upload around the same time I upload the comics or after depending on how my time is.

UPDATE: All pages are now fully inked. All that's left is to include some shading, scan them into the computer, then add text and speech bubbles.

Also, the Kumoricon mascot contest voting is almost done meaning I'll be able to show my entry on here soon.

1. I actually prefer cool weather (and yet I study in one of the annually hottest places in the country)

2. I have a TON of manga. No, seriously, I have over two bookcases of manga. Somewhere I'm putting a Borders employee through college.

3. My eyebrows naturally turn up like horns. This has scared a few people back in middle school.

4. I have never said a swear word, EVER. I was once offered $80, in my hand, to just say one swear word of my choice and I didn't take it.

5. I have the worst memory for names and faces. Absolutely the worst. I can go for a whole year sitting next to someone in a class and still not know their name. On the other hand, I have an amazing memory for tiny little details. "That car has been moved. It used to line up with that pinecone."

6. I have gone on two cross-country road trips, each of them consisting of stuff that's fun to look back on but would never want to experience again. Well... except for one thing because I regret not doing it when I had the chance.

7. I wear a T-shirt all year long. Even if it's snowing I can wear a T-shirt, jacket, and pants and that's enough.

8. Whenever I read the newspaper, I always go for the comics and the letter's to the editor. And yes, I read the physical newspaper. I never got into reading articles online very much.

audition and I.......... didn't make it. I'm a little sad that I didn't get in but there's no helping it. At least I tried making an audition comic for an OCB tournament so I gained some experience from this. Yeah, in case you couldn't tell, I tend to be an optimist

I can still make a spectator comic or fanart if I want to.

So now that that's done I'm going over to

to see if I can find someone to challenge or if someone will challenge me. I have my eye on a couple of people but I need to see if they want to duel too.

Oh, and a random question I want to check with everyone. When you edit a deviation, does it resend the drawing to everyone watching you like when you edit a journal? I want to make sure I don't accidently bombard everyone with the same drawings because of a small edit.

So recently I took a comic class where we had to create comics (what are the odds?) and in a 5 day period I was happy to find out I could create 3 comics, planned, inked, and all. This made me feel a little more confident in trying out OCBs.

So how I'm looking at joining OCBs right now is that I'm now forced to try out new techniques in drawing until I can find something I am very comfortable with (my audition for

taught me that the hard way) and it gets me to practice making comics with a deadline. Plus, to top it off, it just seems like a cool idea to me and I want to give it a try. I'm a little nervous but I hope I can do a good job and last a round or two at least.

Right now I'm trying not to overload myself by only submiting to Toy Kingdom and submiting a character to SDL. If I get in to TK, great, more fun ahead. If not, I at least I got the experience of actually auditioning for an OCB. And for SDL, there's no real set timeline to finish anything until you challenge someone or someone challenges you. I can still participate but I can chose when to accept the challenge or not.

Well, wish me luck as I await my fate with Toy Kingdom. *crosses fingers*

A couple of quick updates here. I have some art I would like to scan and put up here. The only problem is my scanner is now somewhere in the mail and probably won't be in my hands until Tuesday. I didn't have any space in my bags and needed to mail it home.

Update: Scanner arrived! The box and wrapping look like they went through a lion cage but the scanner looks fine.

- As hard as it is to say, I decided not to participate in this. I do want to participate in an OCB contest one of these days but I think I need to brush up on my skills a little more before I think I can stand a chance. I had an idea for characters, a story, and everything but I had some difficultly putting a comic together. It wasn't going as fast as I had hoped. Also, if I did happen to get in, there is other art stuff that I would like to do and need to do and with the speed I was going at making the comic, I don't think I would have much time for anything else. So... yeah, the silver lining here is I learned I need to practice on my tablet more so I can make comics faster.

Other projects:
BSU - Unfortunately my hope of finishing it by the end of April turned out to be a bust. Homework piled up and I haven't done much with it. But still, I promised to finish it so I will finish it.

Update Still working on this. So far the audition has been a challenge just figuring out how I want to put everything together.
Script and page layout are complete anyway.
Character Sheets - 70% I just want to color them in and then add some descriptions about the characters
