First of all, thanks to all who took part in our "Old Maters" contest. We had some wonderful submissions and hopefully folks enjoyed the challenge and learned something new about the Masters of the Past Based solely upon the merits of these specific entries, and have selected the following winners unanimously:

First Place- Twisted by
Because of the variety of line-work, subtle shading process, and visible hints of the construction process of the drawing, Twisted is our first place winner. The strongest aspect of this drawing is the clear focus on the torso, while other parts are masterfully subordinated into oblivion. Just a hint of the hands and legs are included, and the transition from upper arm to elbow is wonderful. I can picture this in a hundred years when the paper begins to age, it will only get better with time. Other works by Sentimental Rain:

Second Place- Old Master’s Contest by
It takes skill and a lot of nerve to sketch with a pen, it’s a very unforgiving medium! mtran246 has done so exquisitely in this delightful little sketch of Peach, clearly focusing on hatch-work, modeling, and the interplay of shadow and light. The straightforward tactic mtran264 uses of simply leaving the lit areas untouched allows our eyes to focus on the subtle modeling in the shadows. The slightly curved hatch-work describes the forms beautifully, and I also like the creative and modern choice of the sepia pen. Other works by mtrn264:

Third Place- All Shall Despair by
Again, exquisite hatchwork and modeling of forms is what makes All Shall Despair so successful. Sherwin-Prague has created the illusion of forms of the figure- no easy task! Bones, muscle, and sinew all come alive in this drawing because of the skillful use of line and hatchwork.
Hey folks, we've decided to extend the "old Masters", also known as the Ninja Turtle contest, to July 1. It seems that everyone (including me)was so busy the closing date came and went. I know 2 weeks is not much time, but remember this traditional artist's contest is more about exploring the mediums and techniques of the past than creating polished masterpieces. It's okay to submit energetic sketches as well as your finest works There are prizes offered like journal features, exclusive stock, and even subs, so get your lead (or graphite) out and submit something!
Contest: “Draw Like a Ninja Turtle!” (Mature Content)
Actually, this contest has nothing to do with ninjas or turtles. and have teamed up to hold a contest. The goal is to promote the study of traditional figurative art and the works of the “Old Masters”- you know, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donnatello- those guys.
The study of the human figure -nudes- has been a mainstay of art for thousands of years; it was perfected in Ancient Greece and then re-born (literally) anew during the Renaissance. Let’s face it, as a species, we humans are interested in ourselves. This contest is being launched in hopes that DA artists (18+) will take the time to Google Image up some old masters drawings, study the techniques carefully, and then apply some of those techniques while using the figure stocks of and/or as photo references. (Then you have to go out and join a life drawing group!)

The rules:
1. All entries must use at least one figure stock from Watchstock or Curiouspeaches, drawn specifically for this contest. Please be respectful of the models in your comments and work.
2. All entries must at least start out as a traditional work- mediums such as graphite, charcoal, conte crayon, etc. Paintings are also welcome. Digitally enhancing the drawing is acceptable (adding textures, backgrounds, layers, whatever) but please label them as such (mixed media). Please no photo-manips for this contest!
3. All entries must be at least loosely related to the techniques of the “old masters”. I realize this is entirely subjective. Putting a modern and creative spin on the work is encouraged! Some other names to look up are; Rubens, Pontormo, Van Dyke, Rembrandt, Durer, and more recent artists Ingres, David, Prud’hon, Bougereau, or even Wyeth or Mims.
4. All entries should submitted and then a note or message should be sent to before May 30, 2009. This date is subject to change. Limit 3 entries per customer.
5. All rules are also subject to change.

The Judges: The contest will be judged by Watchstock, Curiouspeaches, and Inspyretash-stock. Selection will be based on the work’s adherence to the rules, success of the work, and/or any other whim they happen to feel like. Bribery is encouraged

The prizes: We feel that education for its own sake is also its own reward! However, we realize that people like to win stuff, so there will be something for the top 3 entries. You probably won’t win an Ipod, but there will certainly be journal features, exclusive stock, etc. stuff like that… a final list of prizes will be announced at a later date, and donated prizes are kindly accepted!

Please remember that this contest has been designed for artists, even novice ones, to explore and experiment with different materials and techniques. We aren’t just hoping for the most polished of entries, and even quick sketches can be energetic and viable entries. Please feel free to put something together and enter, we like to see your work. Good Luck!

Entries
<img src...

Please respect the model in your work and comments Some of my favorites
P.S.
Just to update this stock page, I thought I'd restate that the purpose of these photos is to provide male anatomical reference for serious artists 18+ years to paint, draw, and learn from. I don't know much about photo-manips, so I don't know if manipers will find them very helpful, but who knows? I often forget to check this page, as I am uaually logged into my other traditional art account so please don't be offended if I forget to fav or comment or respond. I apprecite your artwork, and my hope is that you will find these photos helpful. You do not need to ask permission to use them, but I will probably not do requests as I would rather spend my time painting Please be respectful of the model in your work and comments, and have a nice day!

I am overwhelmed by the response to my stock page on Oct 20. Thanks to for selecting my Pose 10 and for his positive comments. I want to spend a minute explaining my photos just in case some veiwers are confused about their purpose and why they are nudes. This is a stock account designed to provide figurative reference photos for primarily Traditional Artists 18years+. I am a traditional artist who is fortunate enough to have access to a figure drawing group where there are unclothed models of all ages, sizes, and genders. It is not "Ewww", it is a tradition that dates back to Ancient Greece and beyond. That said, I felt that it might be helpful (to artists without a nearby drawing group) to provide male figurative reference photos to those artists who are interested in learning to draw and paint the human body with accurate skeletal and muscular anatomical studies. That is all there is to it, nothing more or less. I am not intending to offend or shock people, but rather to provide stock to an art community that I enjoy to be part of. Thanks for your support, have a nice day

Hey Deviants! I'm slowly creating some stock photos. It's not that easy! My goal is to provide interestingly lit male figure studies for traditional artists and photo manips alike. That said, you have my permission to use these, please link me so I can see what you've done. Thanks, and have a nice day
