As part of self-promotion month, has encouraged artists to promote their work in their journals.
So by way of introduction to my gallery, here is my artistic bio.

1. Who are you? I started learning calligraphy from books when I was 14, though after a while I lost some of the passion - lain calligraphy started to feel repetitive. Then I discovered the joys of experimenting with colours, tools and styles a few years ago, I plunged back and haven't stopped scribbling since. More recently, I discovered local workshops to polish some of the raw techniques I accumulated over the years.
2. What is your artistic passion? Calligraphy, working with colours, trying to find some playful way of getting text onto the page.
3. Why did you get into art? Short answer: the joy of creating something to show around.
4. How do you inspire yourself? Mostly through calligraphy books, calligraphy online, other art forms, poems.
5. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully, still doing calligraphy, and exhibiting my work in a gallery.

Here goes mine.

Why did you join this site?
Introduced by a friend who already had an account.

What does your username have to do with you? Is it a combination of your favorite things, or a character of yours?
It’s my long-time online screen name.

What is your current icon of?
Fish from a card I did for a friend.

How many watchers do you have and how many people are you currently watching?
27 watchers, and I watch 33 artists.

Do you have more than one account?
Nope.

Name 3 of your favorite artists on DA.
It’s really hard to limit to just three. I’m almost a ludite. A old relic who writes snail mail several times a month.

Do you associate people online with their icons?
No - they change too often. I remember their names.

Have you ever suggested a Daily Deviation?
Don’t know who to send a suggestion to for calligraphy.

Everyone has considered leaving DA once or twice. We have lots of photos of our exhibitions and activities, and we every month we will re-publish articles from our past newsletters. Our goal was to have interesting information for all calligraphers, not just our local members. And it's completely bilingual (French & English). Yay for free time! (translation: more calligraphy!)
I'm in quite a whirlwind. these days.
At work I'm training a huge team to use a new tool, plus receiving training on web documentaries.
Finished a calligraphy commission, did a bunch of calligraphy cards for family and working on bigger pieces for layout practice. Also exploring the zone between traditional, gestural and legibility, and hoping to add abstract in the mix.
Translating stuff for the big Worldcon coming to Montreal in August (www.anticipationsf.ca).
Many meetings of the Societé des calligraphes de Montréal (www.societedescalligraphes.org), culminating in my becoming the society's new webmaster. Since then, I've been working like crazy behind the scenes. The previous site was clunky to update, and the society decided to overhaul the look for its 30th anniversary this fall. More to come, this is exciting.

Strangest film I could imagine being done: a Quebecer is re-incarnated in India, and the guy sings Bollywood versions of French-Canadian songs (from pop to children to kitsch). Made-for-TV. For you French-speaking deviants, here's the news bit ([link]) and clips from the film ([link] [link] [link] and [link]).

Popping in quickly to post a few selections from the past month. Due to an arm injury I had to stop most of my usual activities, so I ended up doing an awful lot of calligraphy to fill up all that free time. After two months, the arm no longer hurts at rest, and short efforts (under a minute) are now OK. This week I had permission to test playing the cello, but continuous effort brings back the pain. Next week I test shorter sessions with conditions to reduce strain, and we'll see after that. Sigh.

Another reason for the calligraphy overload is huge & continued stress at work. I find myself using calligraphy as an escape hatch. It's very calming to concentrate on drawing letter shapes or on interpreting a text.

I also did a lot of instructive calligraphy reading, and had the wonderful opportunity to meet Yves Leterme (famous Belgian calligrapher) who was in Montreal for a few days, which explains why I posted so many experiments and studies.

Take care everyone, thanks for watching & enjoy this happy luxury of making art!

Hammering out a lot of work-related stress by doing calligraphy this winter. Concentrating on the ductus of unfamiliar hands is like a meditation. You simply cannot think about other stuff at the same time. Projects for myself and for the calligraphy society provide plenty of inspiration. A few friends will be the happy recipients of my nicer experiments - as long as I can scan a copy for my portfolio (here) I'm happy. I also got three commissions, my first in a long while - nothing beats an imposed theme or style to get the creative juices flowing!

Discovered at the library and in used books some references with *really* good examples
- The Historical Source Book for Scribes (M.P. Bron and P. Lovett)
- Layout and Design for Calligraphers (A. Furber)
- Hoffmanns Schriftatlas (94 full-page plates of German letter styles, including the elusive Schwabacher)
- Modern Mark Making (L. Engelbrecht - lots of examples for modern calligraphy)

So a year that started with nothing much planned ends up being filled with hours and hours of practice (*guilt for the poor trees I sacrifice*).

Good news! My friend Emru found a potential bone marrow donor. I say potential because although the preliminary match looks promising, there are still further tests to be run that will determine if it's a good match. Also, until the very last minute, the donor can decide to opt out (for instance if they become sick, or change their minds). Plus many more people are on the waiting list for a match. So please people, keep spreading the word that donating bone marrow is just as essential as giving blood. More info at [link]

I've also reached the end of my cello lessons. In twelve years, I've reached a point where I would need to sacrifice too many things to keep learning at a pace that justifies paying for lessons. Like a job. Or eating. Or reading. Or calligraphy. I finished the year with a super-dooper challenge: learning a very difficult solo piece in just 6 weeks (Franchomme Caprice No. 4). I'm glad to say I made a good show. A nice way to close a chapter. For motivation, I'll be giving myself another difficult piece to learn for next year.

And more happy news: my best friend will be working at Dreamworks! Yay! A wonderful opportunity for someone who has worked very hard & very professionally to develop her huge talent. Hurrah for her!
Life can sometimes pack a lot of surprises, not all of them good. A good friend of mine and an aunt are both battling cancer: leukemia for my friend, and bone marrow and breast cancer for my aunt. When cancer hits so close to home, the treatment ceases to be abstract. You get to see what the cancer does to them, and then what the treatment does to their system. Definitely no fun and games there!

One part of the treatment in both of their cases is bone marrow transplant. My aunt already found a match, but my friend's only sister is not a match. He has to turn to donor banks worldwide, and he's having a much harder time finding a compatible donor. There are more chances someone of the same ethnic background (african caribbean) will be compatible, but blacks are under-represented in donor banks around the world.

So by way of helping, I'm spreading the word. Emru and his family and friends are hoping that a matching donor shows up. Becoming a donor is really easy (blood sample or mouth swab), and donating bone marrow is almost as painless.

And though a lot people give blood, bone marrow donors are just as essential (for all ethnic backgrounds). Please consider registering; many lives depend on these banks!

His website contains a lot of details about drives & cancer & donation worldwide. Please take a few minutes to visit his site [link] and help spread the word.

We've just had the 8th snowstorm of the winter in Montreal. Truly a winter for winter lovers. Today was more ice pellets than snow, and it felt like walking over 4 inches of microbeads: no traction whatsoever! Ah well, once dressed up against the wind and pinching ice it can be enjoyable, in a slow, not-in-a-hurry way. Even shoveling is a strange and otherworldly experience: like shoveling masses of heavy, coarse salt.
They're already announcing another snow storm: ski! sitting in snow banks! watching snow drifting in the street!
Happy snow!

UPDATE 9-MAR-2008: Another 30cm (12inches) of snow was dumped over Montreal yesterday, bringing the cumulative total to 350cm for this winter. The city has created improvised snow dump sites, because the regular places are full. There are warnings on the news not to let people play in these new sites (not fenced in), because there are avalanches. The snow banks are high enough for avalanches!

On a closer, more personal scale, the wind drift pushed 120cm of snow against the back door. Third time this high. Plus several smaller snow storms. That's a lot of snow. I no longer know where to put it when I clear my porch.

It's been a long busy time since I last updated anything on DA! I spent the summer swimming, then planned a last-minute vacation to Europe, then spent time with my roommate/best friend before she moved out for 14+ months (work out of town). Then concentrating on cello lessons before the Christmas recital... and lo! it's already time for holiday greeting cards! It should be illegal for time to pass so quickly.
So this weekend I sat down , folded paper, and made my annual bunch of cards. This year, in order to save time, I'll be scanning the cards I did and printing extras. At the moment they're all red and white, but I might add golden highlights. I have until the cards ship out to decide...

I was talking with a friend about animation films that had deeply impressed me, and for the past week I scrambled to find the titles of films I had seen as a kid but never knew their titles. Sometimes I only knew a style of animation, and remembered a few striking scenes; for these I had to google very large before being able to narrow until I was fairly sure I had found the right title. Other times, I had to ask friends for help. But at last, for the enjoyment of animation fans on DA, is a list of films that have deeply marked my subconscious (in no particular order).

La Linea (Osvaldo Cavandoli, 1969) - How many misadventures can a little silhouette of a man have? The exaggerated acting was always sublime.

Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck shorts (Warner Brothers) - Daffy Duck, for me, was always the perfect counterpart for Bugs Bunny.

Road Runner and Wile E Coyote shorts (Warner Brothers) - Simply put: the ACME catalog of inventions, and the many, many failed plans of the coyote.

Monkey King (1960s Chinese version) - I haven't seen this in 20 years, but I still remember how fascinated I was with the character, the clouds, the very simple animation.

Primiti too taa (Ed Ackerman and Colin Morton,1987) - Typewriter letters animating a sound-poem.

Tango (Zbigniew Rybczynski, 1981) - A room with people coming in and out, never colliding. Pixellation.

Les aventures du Prince Achmed (1926, or other similar film by Lotte Reiniger)- Elegant shadow puppets, with long fairy-like fingers, and lacy cutout background. I saw this when I was about 10-12 years old. I have never been able to see the film a second time, and yet still it lingers like magic in my mind.

The Cat Came Back (Cordell Barker, 1988) - The song. The story. The cat.

Black Fly (Christopher Hinton, 1991) - I happened upon this short after a TV program back in the year it won the Oscar. The song, the action! Black flies eating humans to the bones! How very, very true!

The Big Snit (Richard Condie, 1985) - The best Scrabble game I ever saw (pun intended).

Neighbours (Norman McLaren, 1952) - This was the first pixellated film I had ever seen. I was fascinated by the story, the animation technique, the strange synthetic music.

June (3D SANDDE animation by Munro Ferguson, 2004) - This abstract film about Alzheimer, best viewed with proper glasses, is touching. Brain connections and memories of a lifetime unraveling in 3D.

Madame Tutli Putli (Chris Lavis et Maciek Szczerbowski, 2007) - I was lucky enough to see a few scenes from this yet-to-be-released film. Beautiful puppet animation with real eyes filmed over the faces. Done in a nostalgic early 20th-century look.

Millenium Actress (Satoshi Kon, 2002) - I love the acting, the intertwining storylines, the music.

Grave of the Fireflies (Isaro Takahata, 1988) - I was touched by the vividness of the storytelling. It's not an easy subject, but it is told in a way that you wholly empathize with the characters and their losses.

Paranoïa Agent series (Satoshi Kon, 2004) - I was fascinated by the links going from character to character. And beautiful designs, as in all Satoshi Kon films.

Final Fantasy X cut scenes (Square Enix, 2001) - This was a mind-blowing game for me to watch: I had never seen such beautiful 3D animation before; I had never expected this quality of animation in a video game; and it was my first introduction to a complex story in a video game. It was literaly like watching a 128-hour film.

Cowboy Bebop series (Hajime Yatate, 1998) - Characters, music, stories. I love the over-the-top episodes, and love the serious ones too. This was TV animation gone luxurious!

Creature Comforts (Nick Park, 1989) - I loved the acting, the different accents given to all the animals. The original short had something special that the series didn't always capture.

Tokyo Godfather (Satoshi Kon, 2003) - Designs and acting.

The opening animation for the TV series Bagatelle (Frédéric Back, 1952) - Bagatelle was a Saturday afternoon show in Quebec that featured short animation films from everywhere in the world. The introduction to the program was animated with sticks and circles over a crayon background. When I found info on this intro, I was surprised to discover it was animated by animation-great Frederic Back (The Man Who Planted Trees)!

Iron Giant (Brad Bird, 1999) - The characters and story feel very human.

Road to El Dorado (Eric Bergeron, Don Paul, 2000): The acting! I really, really love the acting! Even the horse!

I have four pairs of boots by the door this month:

- One pair of running shoes because yesterday morning everything was dry and warm when I went to walk
- One pair of rubber boots because it started pouring in the afternoon when I went for groceries
- One pair of heavy-duty winter boots when I went to shovel the rain-turned-snow
- One pair of dry winter boots for the next morning because under the snow my feet landed in a deep water puddle

Repeat a similar routine every two days, and I have four pairs of boots by the door since April's fool's... It was a strange winter that started a month late, and it looks like it will finish a month late too. I wouldn't mind that much if heavy slush wasn't falling on my head from trees and buildings, and if cars (already with summer tires) were able to stop in the slush before running me over...

Today, all of the above plus gusts of wind reaching 80-90 km/h...

Strange winter.

Small edit: And now I need sandals: we've reached +23 celcius just a few days after the big storm...

Well, my trusty iMac kicked the bucket. Cannot be repaired: the 1999 model is considered "Vintage" (already?!?) and no replacement analog/logic board can be found. I'm temporarily working on an equally "vintage" iBook (2001) that can't display web pages correctly (not enough memory to upgrade to newer OS and browers), so I have to display webpages as text only. Not quite useful on DA, I know... Also, the screen is totally useless for judging any colour saturation or hue when I scan artwork, or the rare times I manage to view images online.

So until I figure out what to get as a new computer and save up a bit, I won't be able to check deviations as often. Many apologies to all the talented people I'm watching...

Big sigh, still mourning.

Question: is anyone working on the new flat-panel iMacs? How does the screen hold up for graphic work? Is it any better than a portable's crummy LCD screen? does the viewing angle and ambient light affect what you see onscreen?

EDIT: In the meantime, thank god for lunch breaks at work. I get to have a DA dose after all

It's kinda strange, but much appreciated, and I visited a lot of galleries along the way. I'm so happy to have a friend like Rufftoon...

On the downside, my old iMac is sick. For my big calligraphy project, I already chose the colours and lettering style, but I'm still trying to find a really good quotation or poem about inspiration / breath; I need it short, but I'm especially looking for something I'd like to see for years and years on my wall.
Our first real snowstorm of the winter in Montreal! Hurrah!
The sky dumped just 20 cm of snow, but the wind and snow drifts have obligingly completed the winterscape. Quite nice if you're dressed properly; I felt the chill only on the tops of my cheeks, where the two layers of scarves make way for the eyes.
As for calligraphy, I'm testing techniques and materials... and my endurance. Some of these things are quick tests, and one contains manic details and took several hours to do despite its tiny size. Basically, they're the calligraphy equivalent of doodles to find inspiration for my big project. I'm not sure yet if I want a modern zen-like layout, or something more traditional. One of the layouts I would like to do requires a bigass round brush, which I don't have. Some of the future tests will be to find an equivalent.

Here are last week's tests:

After 30+ styles, I'm almost done with my calligraphy catalog. The exercise proved very useful, as I found out which styles I had problems with, and what they had in common that gave me such problems.

- I have to relax my grip on the pen so I can change angles more easily

- I have to be careful about nib pressure in order to get really thin hairlines

- I can never have too many pencil guidelines if I want a neat result

- I need much more guidance before trying to sharpen a nib again

- An angled work surface really does help. The arm doesn't cramp as much, and if the arm isn't cramped the fingers are more flexible too.

I'll post some more pages I'm fairly happy with in the coming days.

In the course of the experiment, I got to compare various books. I ended up appreciating a great deal those whose models were closer to historical versions, and who had copies of historical texts (not just flashy versals and illuminations).

Next I will be playing with colour and word layouts for a bigger piece I want to do.

Every time I start a new calligraphy project, I have to look up all kinds of scripts in almost as many books, most of them being at the library (not quite convenient when you want to try several designs in the evening). Plus, these books don't always show the effect of a full page of the scripts. So I decided to collect sample pages in one binder, all done with the same size nib. As I improve, I can simply replace pages with better samples. Plus I get a lot of practice done.
I'm halfway done working my way through my three favourite volumes (Atlas de la Calligraphie, The Art of Calligraphy by David Harris, and Calligraphy: 100 Alphabets by David Harris); I've posted some of the results today; more to come when I have the time to scan them.

Time flies... I can't believe it's already the new year, just when I finally got used to writing "2006" in dates. The world is a sorry mess, environment and politics, and I keep trying to make a difference on the small scale that I can affect. At the very least, I aim for "Thou shalt not cause additional pain to anyone."
I wish good health, wonderful friendships, and happy times to all.

crazytrazy has tagged me

Rules: The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 Weird Habits/Things About Yourself" and people who get tagged need to write a journal about their 6 Weird Habits/Things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "You are tagged" in their devPage comments and tell them to read yours...

So here goes...

Weird Thing About Me Number 1: I get really joyful when it's dark and raining buckets. I don't know why. Colours are sharpest, luminosity not too bright... plus I get to wear raincoat and rainboots in bright colours (I have a range of lime, red, and yellow) that contrast with the asphalt. And if it's windy too, I get to laugh when I walk home. And if there's lightning, I jump from fright but enjoy it anyway... but preferably from inside the house.

Weird Thing About Me Number 2: I really hate the taste of alcohol. I can smell wine, eat whisky cheddar or beer brie, but the aftertaste of too much alcohol (such as one tiny sip) makes my face do ugly things that should not be displayed in polite society.

Weird Thing About Me Number 3: I have a weird accent in all the languages that I speak (although almost unnoticeable in the main language). I learned German, English and French as a kid, and the accents melded into something not quite recognizable, but is variably described as sexy, Chinese, Finnish, Hungarian, Bond-vilain...

Weird Thing About Me Number 4: I count footsteps on long walks. When I'm bored on long walks, I start counting footsteps. I think it's a deformation from swimming; I counted so many laps during years of training that now the mind naturally wanders to counting when it's bored.

Weird Thing About Me Number 5: Condiments. Won't touch them with a ten-foot pole. If I have to move a bottle myself there better be a towel nearby to wipe my hands. Go figure.

Weird Thing About Me Number 6, which is an extension of number 1: Swimming in the rain. Fun. I'm already wet anyway.

I'm tagging TaoDragon, InterstellarLettuce, Dilsan, adonihs, Sharktooth and aloneathebanquet

Big weekend in store. It's the book fair in town, alleys and alleys and alleys filled with books and authors and people. Plus I get to meet several fave authors, including Jeff Smith, who is here promoting the French translation of his Bone comic. Whoo!
I'm already planning my Christmas decorations, even though we've had record-breaking, summerish warm weather. It's the darkness outside: daylight saving time and heavy clouds make me want to brighten up the days a bit. Some people have already lighted their balconies. A bit early, but I guess they're filling an important social service to compensate for depressing light deprivation...

It's 8:30am, but outside the sky is the colour of old asphalt. There's still a few bright yellow maple leaves in some trees, and in contrast they're bright enough to replace the missing sun. It's really nice, and I can't wait to go outside.
I just finished scanning Christmas cards I made, but feeling a bit frustrated with the new medium. I ended up with at least a few nice ones before I ran out of paper, but instead of doing just a few practice pieces I should have sacrificed a whole tube of paint to use as pratice.

I keep discovering deviantART categories, and can't believe I'll ever have time to see everything. I'm really impressed at all the amazing stuff people post!

I just started making my holiday cards with Pebeo 3D metallic paint. Each of them different - this paint is not a tool that allows you to take your time for precision (every tiny shake of the hand shows). So since I couldn't repeat the same art, I went for experimentation. When I'm done I'll post my favourites.

Now with each card different, how do I decide whom to send them to?
