Just wanted to greet fellow deviants in some of your languages. _{If you know how to say Happy New Year in other languages, please let me know!!}

Two-oh-oh-eight came and went, so quickly that it's hard to believe it's a brand spanking new year already. Hope all of you had an awesome 2008. For me, 2008 had been a bittersweet one.

Since young, I've always wanted to experience life in a foreign country, and the opportunity came for me in 2008 - thus explaining my disappearing act for the second half of 2008. I am now pursuing a Marketing degree (final year) in the UK, and it has been a life-changing experience for me so far.

Some things in the UK that I still need to get used to:
1. Spicy food in the UK is not spicy at all!
2. Some eateries charge extra for dining in ... (whereas in Malaysia, they charge extra for takeaway)
3. When some places say they are open 24 hours, they actually mean 24 hours on weekdays, but not on weekends

My family has seen some of my pics and concluded that I'm 'holidaying' in the UK rather than studying... which is true to a certain extent... But hey, just because I don't show pictures of my sleep-deprived self after burning the midnight oil to finish up an assignment doesn't mean it's all play and no work... o3o
As the education system is very different here compared to back home, I find the assignments rather difficult. Back in Malaysia, our assignments are usually practical work, such as planning advertising campaigns, etc., whereas here in my uni, we are asked to write loads essays and reports... which is bad for me since I always have writers' block. ...to 2007!!

Hi people!!! How are y'all? Hope all of you have had fun on New Year's Eve.
Time really flies, doesn't it? In the blink of an eye, it's 2008 already! For me, 2007 has been a great year. I've seen a lot, and learnt a lot, and met a lot of new friends, in both real life and DA.

So yesterday, I hoped to end the year on a high note. Much to my disappointment, it didn't. New Year's Eve started out perfectly fine. It was the last day of my internship at an ad agency, and I was both glad and sad to leave. Glad because I survived the 3-month stint, and sad because I was leaving. (To =TotenVeloren, my cubicle buddy, I'll miss you a lot... )

Anyway, in the evening, my bro, ~domnodragon and I went to a New Year's Eve Countdown street party downtown. The place was packed with loads of people like sardine in a can. And then our New Year's Eve celebration was cut short when my bro's phone got stolen by a pickpocket. If I ever see that m*****f***ing git again, I'm gonna beat him up so badly that his own mother won't recognize him.

Anyway, rants aside... Do you guys make New Year's resolutions? I sort of do, but don't really stick to them... But I've never failed to make my new year's resolutions every year. After all, it's good to be optimistic... So here are mine:
1. Learn to control my temper and keep my cool (I make this resolution every year, but break it within the first week... )
2. Move out of the nest
3. Get a car and start driving myself to college

So what are your resolutions?

Last but not least, I'd like to share a text message I received from a friend, that goes:

The Holidays are Approaching!

Hey people! The holidays are fast approaching! It's less than 2 weeks to Christmas! Have you done your Christmas shopping yet? I've been quite busy and have yet to do my shopping. How do you guys celebrate Christmas?

Basically, in my family, we'll have a little gathering on Christmas eve with our friends and family, have dinner together and play some Secret Santa games or do some gift exchanging. Nothing grand, nothing eventful... just a simple little gathering to mark Christmas. Sometimes, we'll do a little shopping, catch some holiday movies or attend some parties...

So what do you guys do during the holidays?

This is most probably my last journal before the holidays, so I wanna take this opportunity to wish all my DA friends, watchers, and supporters a very happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, and Eid ul-Adha.

I'm sure most of you have watched Hayao Miyazaki's animated film Spirited Away. Remember Chihiro, the little girl who was lost in the Land of the Spirits? I've seen the movie for more than 5 times now, and there's one scene that I remember particularly well.

It was Chihiro's first day at work at Yubaba's bath house, and she was totally at lost, not knowing exactly what to do.

And right now, that is precisely how I'm feeling. I've just started my 3-month internship at an ad agency yesterday. Today is my second day. My mentor and seniors are really nice and helpful, and I have a nice desk with a desktop computer equipped with internet access and all... but I feel quite lost. It feels so weird having nothing much to do, while everyone else is busy with something. I've been handed a stack of reading materials to read up on, as well as some stuff to Google.

Hopefully, I'll feel better tomorrow... I'm trying to be very optimistic about it. I ~~think~~ know I'm gonna have a good time, and learn loads from this 3-month stint.

By the way, my computer has been infected with a virus, and is suffering from severe memory dump. Can someone recommend a good (free) anti-virus program?
I've tried AVG, Avast, and Avira, but none of them have detected any virus.

My computer is now 10 times slower that it used to be. I don't want to reformat it as I have a lot of stuff in here.

Can someone please help?

Drama Begets Drama

Troops Withdrawn... For Now...

Recently, I have written a news article as a response to another news article which I found very insulting and disturbing. In the article, the writer rants about how people are posting a lot of MySpace-style self-portraits on DA. Apparently, she is angry that DA is slowly turning into MySpace. To prove her point, the writer has even added in her article some thumbnails of other deviants' self-portraits (which she thinks were bad) and indirectly labeled them as having 'no artistic merit, composition, or context', and has caused them to get spammed and flamed.

The purpose of the article I wrote was to express my disgust and disapproval about the mean and insulting things the writer wrote.

However, I have submitted a request to the Help Desk to get my article removed. The reasons why I am removing my article are because:

1) My article has indirectly linked more people to the "featured" deviations, and this might have indirectly caused them more negative publicity.

2) My article (and hers, no doubt) has caused a lot of controversy and uproar, which I don't think is good for anyone. Drama begets drama, and this is not the type of drama that this community needs.

3) My article actually gave her even more publicity, attention, and page views, which are exactly what she is craving for (She stated in her own journal that she did the news article for page views... wtf?!!)

4) Wrong choice of media and message strategy... should have tried the forums rather than submitting a news article.

Hopefully, the Help Desk can get my article removed as soon as possible. I am really sick and tired of confronting and arguing with someone who thinks that it is her freedom of speech to write a controversial and insulting article like that.

However, that does not mean that I have given up in my fight against the trashing of other deviants' artworks publicly. I will find more effective, ethical, and non-biased ways to address this issue again...

...because I believe that every deviant, no matter professional or amateur, deserves to enjoy their DeviantART experience, and not to have their works flamed, spammed, or insulted, especially publicly.

To those who have supported me in my news article, thank you very much.

What's Wrong With Self-Portraits?

Today, I read a DA news article in which the author laments about how people are posting a lot of Myspace-style self-portraits here on DA. In the article, she criticized the self-portraits as having 'no artistic merit, composition, or context'. And what's worse is that she posted some of those so-called MySpace-style self-portraits by other deviants in the article and insulted them.

I felt really angry after reading the article. Who does she think she is? She has no right to criticize or insult any deviant's art or self-portraits publicly.

If she thinks that those self-portraits have no artistic quality, then she should know that not everyone is professional photographer. DeviantART is for everyone who loves art and wants to share their art, regardless of whether they are amateurs or professionals.

And some of those self-portraits that the author has "featured" in her article have received some very insulting comments and spam after she gave them bad publicity.

In my humble opinion, no one has the right to insult anyone's deviations as long as they are not porn or stolen artworks. If a person thinks that the works are bad, they should just ignore it or give some constructive criticism on how to improve the artwork, rather than saying "I hate this" or "This is ugly" or "Are you stupid or something?".

Brand Spanking New!

Hi guys! How have y'all been? It's been ages since I last updated my journal or submitted a deviation. Been really busy with college assignments and stuff... I'm currently enjoying one of my rare assignment-free weekends...

Anyway, I've started a new DA account called ~quirkyjunks for me to submit stuff that I don't want to submit here... The new account has a totally different personality from this one. I'll be submitting mostly fractal art, flash files, and other stuff that doesn't fit into this gallery.

Hello!! How are y'all?

Been long since I last updated my journal. Holidays are over and I'm back to my busy life again. I'm now in my fourth semester and college work will be tougher, I suppose... Anyway, I'm studying Advertising and Marketing, just in case you're curious...

My DA subscription from has expired and I just renewed it though I'm almost broke because I don't want to lose the lovely stamps that I collected. (See Shoutboard) The DA people are very a good marketers... they know how to make customers come back for more...

Anyway, my page views have finally exceeded 8888 and it happened sooner than I thought. I don't think anyone caught my kiriban... Anyway, if you did, please send a screenshot to me via the note. Another kiriban is coming up - 10k...

Also, I'd like to thank for my new avatar ... Pretty isn't it? I've always wanted shiny animated avatars but I don't know how to make them...

Recently, a random deviant (not gonna mention names) visited my page and started posting nasty messages on page about how I stole and copied some other person's avatar. I'm so pissed. I can't wait to see what this person will say next.

Another four-letter word associated with exams is A-W-A-Y. Which means I'll be away for a short while until my exams are over. But I'll still be replying messages and checking deviations (but may be a little slow though...)

Anyway, I think I've mentioned this somewhere in my journal before... Anyway, I'm sort of practising a meatless diet. Sort of. Trying. But people still doubt I can give up McDonald's. Anyway, I have been practising this meatless diet for a few months already (except when my mum puts chicken in my plate and forces me to eat it ).

Actually the reason behind this is sort of weird. Somewhere in January, my Public Relations lecturer showed a video about animal abuse in class. I'm not gonna get to the details but I do have a copy of the video so if you want to see it, I can send it to you. But don't blame me if I spoil your dinner...

So anyway, everyone thinks I'm overreacting over the whole video and that I'm a bogus vegetarian. But I really really am trying hard not to devour any burgers...

I guess that's all for now... better get back to my books... *siiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*

6 weird things about myself...

1: I bite my nails... which is a really bad habit... but oh well, bad habit dies hard... I bite them when I'm stressed out or nervous. No manicure for me, or I'll eat it too...

2: When I was really young, I had an alter ego called "Winnie". Now I feel it's kinda weird to be calling your alter ego with your own name...

3: After watching a video about animal abuse during my PR class, I stopped eating animals. (I still eat other animal-based products like milk and eggs coz I can't stand being a vegan... yet...) My friends predicted that I will give the whole I-am-going-to-be-a-vegetarian thing pretty soon but I'm gonna prove them wrong.

4: I've got really tiny hands... and I don't know why... I'm not exactly tiny...

5: I love to play with chewing gum

6: I have a very untidy room... nothing that weird but my parents think it is... they often doubt if my room really belongs to a girl...

Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking artists for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what theyre NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are seeking artists, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? none?

More than likely, you dont know any. Otherwise, you wouldnt be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the opportunity to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him a few bucks for materials. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered yes to ANY of the above, youre obviously insane. If you answered no, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a great opportunity for an artist to have his work seen on your car/zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a great opportunity for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a student or beginner in an attempt to get work for free. Its ignorant and insulting. They may be students, but that does not mean they dont deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a student once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether its one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their portfolio. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. Its not compensation. Its their right, and its a given.

4. Stop thinking that youre giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someon...

Happy 2007, everyone! 2006 has come and gone so quickly that I can't believe it's 2007 already! 2006 has been an amazing year for me. How has it been for you?

How did you guys spend your New Year's eve? I'm just lazing around at home, watching fireworks display from my balcony. Can't really see anything though.

Somewhere in February, I started college and I'm now in my third semester already! Time really flies! And I've been in DA for more than 5 months. DA rocks! (By the way, I've made a new avatar! New year, new look! Tell me what you think about it k?)

Do you guys make new year's resolutions? I do, but I don't really stick to them. My 2007 new year's resolutions are:
1) Don't be lazy to exercise
2) Grow up
3) Eat less junk food
4) Sleep earlier every night
5) Stop procrastinating

Freaking Slow Internet Connection

An earthquake in China and Taiwan caused outages in several international links. Thus, my internet service is suffering from a serious degradation in performance. Several days ago, the connection was so horribly bad that websites hosted outside my country could not be accessed - and this includes DA and Yahoo.
It is slightly better now. I can access to DA and Yahoo but the speed is freaking slow... *tears hair out and screams in frustration*

Speaking of natural disasters, a part of my country, especially the Southern states, is hit by floods. I hope everyone is ok there, especially my relatives.

Hey guys! It's only days to go before Christmas!!! Have you guys finished shopping for gifts? I've just spent a bomb on presents for my mum and sis today.

Anyway, I'm on break for two weeks. But I have to help my mum in her office almost everyday (and it gets extremely boring sometimes...) And I have to take my driving course after putting it off for the whole year. So there goes my holidays...

Anyways, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and happy holidays to everyone!!! And thank you so much for a great year at DeviantART!

(P.S.: Which do you think is better - PC or Mac? I'm still deciding between a Dell, a Vaio C-Series, and a Mac Powerbook)

After being missing in action for a week, I'm back, people!!! Miss you guys a lot. Didn't have any opportunity to go online during my holiday in Brisbane. The hotel did provide internet services but it was freaking expensive!!!

Brisbane was fun!!! The weather was totally different from what I predicted. It was sunny but was surprisingly windy as well. Did some shopping... my legs are still sore from all the walking...

Went to Gold Coast as well... the beach was amazing!!! Instead of visiting theme parks, we went to see kangaroos and koala bears. Might upload some piccies of these adorable animals soon...

Now that I'm back, I have loads of things waiting for me to complete. To my utmost horror, I have a Public Relations assignment due tomorrow!!!

Gotta get it done now... bubbye for now, folks!!! Love ya lots!!!

Oh, by the way, has DA just changed or edited its logo? Or is it a Christmas decoration? It is now decorated with little bright lights... It's really pretty!!!

This week comes and goes really fast. Before I know it, it's Friday already! At least, it's Friday here. Can't say I've had a good week. Been really really busy. Bought a new tablet (the cheapest one!!! ) but haven't got the time to start doing things with it. But the good thing about my tablet is that it solves all my problems with the mouse. Is a leftie who has been working with a mouse using the right hand... who can blame me if I'm slow...

Nothing much going on in my life right now except new classes, assignments, projects with a student ad agency which I'm in, and lots of other stuff... siiiiiiiiigh... who says college life is fun? Ok... it would be fun minus all the classes and assignments... but then again, it wouldn't be college life right?

Anyways, my 2000th pageview is almost here. It was 1988 when I took a look at it just now. 1988, my birth year!!! And I'm doing something for the person who catches the 2000th pageview. A kiriban, people call it but I still haven't figured out what a kiriban really means.

Hello, fellow deviants!!! Been away for some time due to exams. Finally, the exams are all over! To my dismay, my next semester is due to start in next week...

Due to the exams, I've left a lot of work and deviations pending. So now I'm even busier than during the exam week... sigh.............

Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!! Yesterday, my beloved external hard disk corrupted, and it took all my assignments together with it. I had a back-up copy in my PC but to my utmost horror, my PC's hard disk crashed!!!!!!! Same night!!!
I am soooooooo dead. I have to redo all my assignments...
All my new work-in-progress deviations are gone too...
And I am now so busy redoing what I had already completed.
ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm on a faving frenzy! I've been on DA for barely a month but I have +fav-ed 274 deviations (and counting)!!! Actually, my friend was the one who noticed that I have this faving obsession.

Yeah, I think so too. I just can't stop my fingers from clicking "Add to Favorites" whenever I see gorgeous artworks *drools*!!!

It's real fun to fav others' artworks. It makes my day, and it makes theirs (I hope). Plus there are some super-gorgeous artworks that did not receive the recognition they deserve.

Next, faving artworks is also really helpful whenever you need some inspiration or reference.

Ah, I just looooooooooove faving!!!!!
