"In general, I found Harvard an exciting place, where people were genuinely focused on study and learning, and with no special emphasis on grades. But to take a premed course was to step into a different world -- nasty and competitive. The most critical course was organic chemistry, Chem 20, and it was widely known as a "screw your buddy" course. With my four-day weekend this week, I've thought of nothing to do with my time except read. And I came across some fanfictions; it just so happens that I've been in a FF7 mood recently, and I'm surprised at the incredible VincentxTifa pairing fanbase out there. Although I'm more partial to the logical CloudxTifa pair (and on an official note, VincentxTifa has always been out of the question) the large majority of fanfiction stories about VinTi aren't so bad at all. The one thing that bothers me is how much people like to tout a renowned Vinti fic called "Feathers in the Maelstrom." Of all of the reviews I've read online, all of them have been 100%, passionately, unquestionably positive. Well, I'm going to be a fish out of water and my review is negative. Many of the reviews I've read vaguely hug the concept of Vincent's excellent characterization and the "amount of incredible/meticulous work" this Penfeather author put into the novel. But I question-- what is excellent characterization for Vincent? Until DoC, he's been vastly enigmatic; and it would be up to the audience to decide his ulterior motives and thoughts. What these people love about Vincent's characterization in FITM is really not characterization-- only the author's sympathy and regard for Vincent's personality. Nothing more, nothing less. She's careful about not bashing him into something bland and cliche, but she tries too hard to make him human. In fact, it's because of her intention to make Vincent and the story so realistically, complicatedly human that the entire story is dry. She writes about every action and thought, hitting pages upon pages of redundance. Overall, I think her style is long-winded and uninteresting-- although I admire her originality in plot work and background. But I'd rather read something more delicate and refined than a live diary of every-day occurrences, finely honed into even the most ignorable of events.

Please, writers out there. If you are ever going to write a story, do me this favor and keep this advice in mind: a story is a craft, a beautiful retelling of a piece of life. To inspire the reader is to let us taste the icing, not force us to gorge on a tub of cake. A story shows us the arc, then presents pictures (snapshots) of the most memorable moments. It proves to us that we are human (not data-collecting robots).

Yesterday, a person who once claimed to be my friend admitted to me that she was mad that I had won it. Why? Because I didn't deserve it. Because, when I won, I proved to her that the world rewards those who are selfish, conniving, materialistic, and self serving. My essay was total bullshit. My essay was half-ass and an extravagant lie.

She stripped me of my own dignity. In front of the rest of the world. "Only you can think up a shitload about loving human beings. You don't even know the first thing about love."

I thought about this for the longest time. It kept eating at me. It's 8:00PM and I'm still thinking about her 11:00AM comment. I try to remind myself about how I originally felt when I wrote that essay: about my journey, the complications with finding love in humanity by finding love for myself.

What hurts is that she might be right. And I just might not see this piece of truth.

Her name’s Shela and she’s a senior. She left me five minutes after we started—to get lunch. And she never came back until five minutes before I had already finished.

When I put my name on my work, she asked me how “I could be so mean and never put her name on it too.”

I told her the truth—“You never did any of it. You just want to take credit for something beautiful that I’ve done.” I love art, and I put my heart and soul into it. I know that my DA artworks are trivial, ugly, and stupid, but my real life artwork means a lot to me. They're personal, they're deeper, different. They're beautiful. I spent 4 hours, I skipped lunch just to finish this piece. All while she was eating and talking with friends.

She scribbled her big ugly name nearly in the middle of my hard work. She said, “Well I did half of it. And I told you not to skip lunch.”

So when she left, I wrote right underneath her name, “Art mainly by Meg Watson.” And I left.

When the day was over and I walked back outside to check on my sidewalk painting, I saw that my name was scratched over. And the whole piece was washed out. It was gone. Destroyed.

When I started getting upset and a few tears came through, Shela walked over from who knows where and told me, "Get over it. This isn't a big deal."

But it is. Shela’s not a real artist. She could never feel it like I feel it.

I don't have to guess to know that Shela was the one who did it. But I can't help wanting to tell her that she'll never get anywhere in art. She'll never be as good as me. Because she'll never know what art is until she knows what it means to cry like I did.

On Shookz lately, someone mentioned that the internet wasn't so important to her anymore. It's not important to me either. What happens on the internet nowadays is inconsequential to me. And I don't know if I'm just feeling indifferent. What is important to me, however, is that I stay on top of school and stay on top of the SATs, Subject Tests, Ap tests, and finals. This is my future and my life at stake; if I do not do what I must, I will never amount to anything. And I hope you guys can understand that. Sorry. There will be time for leisure. But this time is the time for studying.

Yeah, internet's addictive and all, but school's not only not addictive, but it's not satisfying and it's taking up all of my time. To be very optimistic, I'll probably never frequent devart again for a month or two-- or until the end of school. I go to a school called "Upper Arlington High School" (Original, I know).

I take AP/IB courses-- and yes, they are tiresome and suicidal.

My life is unhealthy because of these terrible classes.

My conclusion is--- if you know you will have a heart attack, don't take AP/IB.

If you know you are easily suicidal and will kill if you are unhappy, stop yourself.

If you want to go to Harvard/Stanford/Yale, suck it up now and watch as you lose sleep.
