Eh, I'm sorry about disappearing for a long time. As Skywookie graciously commented below, I managed to snap my arm in a couple places, so not much art was to be had for a few months. I've started back up recently, but have been too lazy to post here.

I'll try to get my gallery somewhat up to date, but I probably won't be around terribly much. If you want to get in touch with me, you're much better trying email than leaving me a note here. Thanks.

So, yeah... I'm not dead and/or a fugitive from the law. Although I'm sure that would have been exciting.

And on another thrilling note, it took me fifteen minutes to remember how to post journal entries again.

Corel finally released their Painter IX demo. I had some spare time to give it a go today and was pretty impressed. There aren't many new features, but they've vastly improved a lot of what they already had going.

They finally adopted the Photoshop layers system, for example. Creating a new layer now places that layer directly above the one you're working on. Before, Painter would spastically drop it on the very top of every layer you had, so you have to contantly drag your layers into the correct order after you made them.

The brushes seem a lot faster. You can now use a 600 pixel digital watercolour brush without having your computer burst into flame. Airbrushing is quicker, and there's no slowdown with brush ghosting until you get up around 1000-1200 pixel brushes.

Speaking of the watercolour system, they went vintage with the digital watercolour system and now it works like Painter 6.1 with wet media that can't have dry media on top of it without drying the page. This is much, much better since their new system sucked hard. Hurrah.

They also went back to the 6.1 version of the brush controls. In 8, you had to stop working and open the brush palette to make changes to your brush variant. I'm happy they did this, but at the same time it's kind of a jip they're calling this a 'new feature'.

They also included paths, so you can now have nice curves and align your shapes to paths you make. That's well and good, but they still have their ridiculously stupid straight line function that 'connects the dots'. I just want to SHIFT+ for straight lines. I don't know why they don't add this.

Colour-sampling and mixing is much more in-depth if you want to get into it. Painter still has the best colour wheel out of any of the main photo-editing/painting software packages, so I don't even bother with the mixer.

Page rotating is a thousand percent better. It was fantastic before; Painter lets you rotate the entire canvas on your screen using keyboard shortcuts very, very quickly which is great if you sketch or paint with it. But now Painter can rotate all your layers, shapes, AND the canvas at once.

Painter IX lets you use a scratch disk. O joy, o rapture, o bliss divine!

The last thing of note is the new artist oils variant brushes. These actually run out of paint as you use them, so brushing on a nice streak of colour across your canvas will show the end of it fading out like a dry brush. They make the already incredible oil brushes in Painter that much cooler.

I feel like I should mention that Painter IX has quite possibly the ugliest box art of all time. Seriously, it's hideous. And now every time I start the program up, a giant, nine-fingered hand that looks like it was drawn by Chucky from the Child's Play movies pops onto my screen and freaks me the hell out. I'm praying that the marketing department at Corel comes to their senses before this hits retail, but I'm not holding my breath.

Despite the misfiring asthetics, I'm going to be upgrading when it comes out in October and I'd recommend anyone looking for a serious painting program to take a look at it.
