Long story short: went to CERN to help out with some filming for a Uni project, it was awesome.

Short story long:

Just got back from a trip to CERN! That would be, of course, the place that houses the Large Hadron Collider amongst other things. I was essentially acting as cameraman/soundman/general dogsbody for a friend of mine who's making a short video for his 2nd year Science Communication project - somehow he managed to wrangle us invites to come and have a look round. I'd love to be able to say I saw the LHC, but unfortunately that's under tighter control. BUT I did get to see the AD, which is the antiproton decelerator and plenty of other funky science stuff - plenty of pics on flickr, some to go up here on dA soon.

Also, plush electron! Check it out! [link]

The only downside? Stops my gallery here getting choked up with the hundreds of photos I take - I'll still put a few choice ones up here now and then though.

Plus it allows me to use my dA account to focus on the other things I like to do, i.e. drawing and comic-making.

Speaking of comics, in fact, the great podcasters at Bridging the Rift were kind enough to mention my AnyWho comics in their latest podcast!
The mahoosive rumour mill that is the interwebs has spat out a new tidbit of possible information as to the re-designed TARDIS interior for the 11th Doctor's series. Klicken sie das link for more info, or scroll down for a sum-up/reaction.

[link]

"Supposedly, the interior of the TARDIS will have two different levels, joined by a spiral staircase, and we'll be seeing a console room, a lab area, a sitting room, a long corridor, and "numerous other little nooks and crannies"

This I quite like, I've always wanted to see more of the inside of the TARDIS as so far in the new series..es we've been limited to just the control room with a quick jaunt to the Doctor's wardrobe. Plus I like the idea of the Doctor having a lab xP.

However, then there's this:

"The console room itself is a shaped like a hexagon attached to a square rather than being circular, the color theme is mostly silver and gold, and the coral finish has been replaced with marble. The roundels decorating the walls are now inverted hemispheres, and while they appear throughout the set, they do not appear on every wall. The roundels have different color schemes for each room: gold in the console room, silver, gray, and blue in the lab, and brown in the sitting room."

Ugh, I was dreading this sort of thing. I really liked the coral/steampunk/junkyard feel of the TARDIS, it made the Doctor and his magical ship seem more human and relatable. Going all out with marble is very old-school, and it could be that they're trying to play up his God-like...ness..., but either way...I dunno, not sold.

But of course this could all be lies and deceit, and given that it's from a forum poster who claims to have seen inside the set large grains of salt are recommended to be taken with this.

Although, I've just been watching The Talons of Weng-Chiang and that doesn't feature the inside of the TARDIS once and yet still manages to be pretty awesome. Because Tom Baker in Victorian London, that's why.

SO! Anyway! True or not, what do you guys make of the (possibly) new TARDIS interior? I know a lot of you (especially a certain Canadian) will hate it, and some of you old-school types will love it...

Until we get official pics, keep it real true believers

Saw a few shows, one of which was a play about Zombie survivors - and that was nowhere NEAR the strangest thing that was on. XD

Oh and one other crazy thing that happened while I was up there - I was out at the Royal Mile, checking out all the street performers and pamphlet people, and my legs were killing me so I had a quick rest on a stone bollard - literally as soon as I sat down, Alan Cumming walked right in front of me. No seriously. That guy. (For the geeky among you he's Nightcrawler out of X-Men and Boris McRussianName from Goldeneye, presumably he's been in other things that I can't remember because I am a huge geek)

Stupid thing is I had turned my camera off! Curses, there goes my future career as a paperazzi, which is probably just as well.

But still, Edinburgh is a lovely place to go at any time, not just for the Fringe or any other festival. I recommend it! Although the Fringe is definitely worth going to. I do however suggest you plan what you're going to do if you do go to the Fringe, I bloody well wish I had XD

There, and all without a single Scottish stereotype...och aye the noo!

Oh bugger...

In case you don't already know, the new look of Matt Smith's 11th Doctor (and his companion) has been revealed!

[link] <- Official BBC News article

Seems like there's a bit of a paradox going on, in that Matt Smith is the youngest Doctor but he's dressing very much like an old man/geography teacher, which is very different to the first photos we saw - this, in my book, is A Good Thing.

Also, have a look at some more on-set photos: [link]

Looks like the TARDIS has been given an update as well! Well, I say update, but in fact it seems to have reverted to a much earlier model (see the St John's Ambulance badge? Very Old School) and it seems a lot bigger as well.

If you ask me all of this points towards a return to the style of the older, traditional Doctor Who and away from the big Hollywood-ized, cheesefest that RTD's Who could be at times. And I think it's about time.

If anything, Tennant's Doctor was almost too good - he became a sex symbol, an action man and a God-like figure in show, and really that's not what the Doctor should be like, at least not all the time. A geeky, mysterious, weird-looking, anachronistic man is exactly what the Doctor should be.

Put simply, it's a refreshing change to have the companion be the one wearing the Converse

(Oh yes, about her, she's still hot xD)

So thumbs up from me! Can't wait to see how this all turns out.

EDIT: More change!

As well as everything else, it appears that the Sonic Screwdriver is also getting an overhaul - pics here: [link]

I'm sorry but...do not want. It's too shiny and polished, I liked the rough-around-the-edges look of the old one (same goes for the TARDIS interior, which I'm starting to worry about). There is at least an explanation for the change, presumably he gives his old one to River Song as implied in Forest of the Dead.

Next up will likely be a new TARDIS interior, and I'm concerned it'll have the same problems as this new Sonic Screwdriver. Really seems like Moffat is trying to pretend that RTD's Who never happened, or at least make us forget all about it. Hmm. :/

Do not click this link or read this journal if you don't want it spoiled, but lets be honest since it was *officially* announced it's not a whopping great big spoiler is it?

[link]

You may or may not recognise her from The Fires of Pompeii, in which she played a soothsayer. I didn't, has to be said and it's a small enough part to not be screwing with continuity, plus it's history which lets the writers say "Ooh they're just related"

But anyway, I'm pretty happy with this choice based on what Moffat has been saying (it's in the article), plus she's a Scottish redhead, my two weaknesses XD

There's the issue of age, again, in that she's only 21, but that's less of an issue with the companion/companions than with the Doctor. If you think about it, having a young companion with a young Doctor makes sense, the bigger the age gap the creepier it gets (these days anyway, not so much of a problem in the olden times).

Hopefully having younger actors in the main roles won't make this, to borrow a phrase, Hollyoaks in Space - I think Moffat has more sense than that.

So, basically, I'm pretty happy with this, but be warned Moffat - I'm putting my trust in you so don't let me (and everyone else) down!

Tip of the space-hat to [link] for the link (awesome blog btw)

Consequently I probably won't, or at least shouldn't (no disrespect, just got to get my priorities right) be too active for a while.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the AnyWho "Extra" comic I put up is the sort of thing you might see a bit more of in the future, they're much easier and quicker to do so I guess it's a kind of filler or just something quick and daft. Plus my ideas don't always work when I try and make a proper comic, so there's that as well.

(Not that I'm going to stop doing "proper" comics, just that these will pop up as well, and probably more frequently)

And of course the hunt/decisions/figuring out what to do re: my own site is still...ongoing, but nothing has really happened on that front yet >.>

So there you have it, update...updated

Word to your mother*

*Ice Ice Baby

So...I got this comment on my page today...

"I probably didn't have an account on here the first time I saw the Anywho comics so now... I CAN FINALLY FAVE THEM!!!

I've noticed you have hardly been doing them lately. I WANNA SEE MORE ANYWHO COMICS!!!"

So yeah, I've not been doing AnyWho comics recently, but I have to admit to doing other things instead and not just not doing anything.

Also, I don't appreciate people *demanding* more comics - I'm not a comic factory to plop these things out on demand, although perhaps that's being a bit harsh. I don't do this for "a living", so maybe I don't feel like I have to put them out all the time. But still I do want to do more AnyWho, it's just that there are so many other things I want to do as well, I like to think I'm a pretty creative person so I enjoy branching out and doing new things.

There's the Photography, which I really enjoy, and more recently my drawings and superhero creations which I also really enjoy. Obviously I know most of you would love to see more AnyWho, but at the end of the day I'm not a one-trick pony.

Plus at the moment we're in a bit of 'Who dry spell, the only real news was Matt Smith being revealed as the 11th Doctor so there's a bit less material to work with.

I'm sorry to have disappointed everyone with the lack of comics, but it seems my drive to make them has dried up as of late. I don't want to leave you guys hanging though, so I'm not going to stop making them. I'll try and get back into things soon, and if nothing happens in the next two or three months blame Uni - luckily it's summer holidays after that so there's plenty of time to get things done then. =]

So yeah, I hope you guys can put up with my random other things and I'm sorry to have let AnyWho fade away a bit >.>

What tomfoolery is this?! A new devART user page layout with a lot more customisation and a rather funky new style? I like it

I'd seen it around the place a few times, guess that was the beta testing - nice to have it in place now though! I very much like the fact that you can re-arrange the various sections of your page, plus there seem to be one or two new features for non-subscribers (?) such as the "Friends" box, unless that was always there and I never figured out how to turn it on *derp derp*

So yes! Funkiness! Plus it fits with the message centre now, which is nice.

Oh and as a bit of heads-up, if I can find time next week there *may* (and I stress may) be a comic in the works. We'll see how much work gets me down (it's beginning to pile up), plus I've got house-hunting to do as well. So I may only get started on a comic, but I do want to have one done for you all as soon as I can.
I bring you a report from the front lines of Who-dom! First off, the Christmas special was great

Admittedly it got a bit silly towards the end, but then RTD does have a habit of going a tad overboard with big epic finales and so on - I mean take the end of the latest series for example.

David Morrisey was very good as the "other" Doctor, and it turned out that his identity wasn't as simple as it seemed. All I'll say (to keep things spoiler-free) is that my prediction a while ago was dead wrong. :/

Also, Dervla Kirwan (sp?) was very good as Miss Hartigan, her performance was definitely one of the highlights of the episode. I won't muck about though, Rosita was...umm...very predictable to be honest - a bit of a stock character if you ask me.

Still, on the whole I enjoyed it very much. Bring on the 2009 specials! ^^

----

Oh and sorry that I haven't got the comic up today, I was a bit lost for ideas so I thought I'd see what the Xmas special threw up in the way of inspiration - and you'll be pleased to know it did the trick, although it may end up being a bit spoilery if you've not seen "The Next Doctor". So expect that to be up soon. =]

Hope you're all having/have had a great Christmas and that you got a nice stash of goodies, which as we know is what Christmas is all about

(I'm very happy with my WALL-E DVD, I can tell you )

So Merry Christmas to all!

And roll on the new year! I long for a world where they don't f**king matter! This is why I'm so damn pleased that he's won - it's a huge step against prejudice to show that this can happen, not to say that there's any imperative that it should, just that the possibility is there and that's what really matters, in my opinion.

Change - yes you can, America.
You may or may not already know, but David Tennant has confirmed that he's leaving Doctor Who after the four 2009 specials.

Here's the BBC news article on it for further confirmation, and DT also talks about why he's decided it's time to quit.

[link]

Now, David was/is a very good Doctor. But in all honesty this was always going to happen, and we all knew it. It was incredibly naive to think that he'd be in the part forever, although I had hoped that he'd be around for a Moffat-led series, because god knows that would be awesome.

So I've got no time for people who say they won't be watching the new series' simply because Tennant isn't the Doctor, or for people who bawl their eyes out over his leaving. I've got one message for them: GET OVER IT!

This is how Doctor Who works, the lead actor changes. I'd have loved Chris Eccleston to have stayed for more than one series, and I was very annoyed when he quit, but I'm now a fan of David Tennant's Doctor and I'm sure if they pick the right actor then I'll like the 11th Doctor as well.

And please, please, PLEASE BBC, change the sort of person who plays the Doctor! If you change Tennant for a cheap knock-off version then what's the point. Make it interesting for crying out loud.

Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Peace

It's Friday tomorrow. Friday. One day left before I up sticks and move into my University halls of residence. One. Day. It's going to be hella busy.

That means I probably won't be on, certainly not for long enough to write a big long journal like this one. I know some people complain about people airing their private stuff on devART (i.e. the famous "devART not devSPACE" stamp), but this concerns dA itself and you as well so to hell with it.

So here we go...

If it wasn't for you guys watching me, commenting, faving and generally appreciating what I do I might not have ended up on the course that I'm doing - Physics with Science Communication. You encouraged me to keep going with my comics and photography, which in turn made me develop my creative side that made me want to do Sci Comm. I honestly don't know what I'd do without dA, it gives me validation in some sense for my work - if I was just doing it without putting it out anywhere I'd probably have stopped a while ago.

This place and the community motivates me to improve and develop, and I love it for that. So before I go off to start a brand new phase of my life, I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who's ever commented, faved, added me to their friends list, and to the people who I've added to my friends list, the people whose stuff I comment on and fave because your work inspires me to do better (while also providing something pretty to look at )

And probably most importantly of all you make me ask myself the question: what next? Not in a pessimistic, "oh now what" kind of way, but in a "Right, where can I go from here?" kind of way.

I want to move up, expand, get better, become a better photographer and comic-maker, move into bigger things...there's so much I want to do, and it's all because of you.

Sometimes I wish there was a bigger phrase than "Thank you", because I'd need it for the end of this journal.

DeviantART is part of my life. It's my creative outlet. It's one of the best things to happen to me. Viva la ART!

Thank you so much ^^

First of all, DON'T PANIC! I am, for the most part, perfectly fine, which is nice.

Basically what's happening is that I'm going into the Hospital on Monday for a relatively minor surgical procedure to remove this...thing...(you don't want the details, trust me), and although I'll only be in there for a day or two at maximum I'll be spending either two or six weeks recovering. It depends on what Mr. Surgeon has to do, which we won't know until I'm actually on the table. Vich iz a bit of a bugger but zere you go

So what that means is that I'll probably be out of action for a while, although I'm not sure for how long or how "out of it" I'll be when recovering. If I can, I'll post an update on my status when I get out but for the most part this week will likely be the last you'll hear from me for a little while.

And dammit, I'm seeing WALL-E and The Dark Knight whether I'm well enough or not! Screw the rules, I have green hair

So anyway, I shall be around until Monday.
*WARNING: SPOILERS - consider yourself warned, non-series 4 viewers!*

So here it is. The series 4 finale of Doctor Who. What's going to happen? Does the Doctor...you know...or is something freaky going on? Are the Daleks going to destroy the universe? What happened to Sarah Jane and Harriet Jones? And what exactly is going on with Donna? All of these questions will hopefully be answered tonight, via RTD's terrible writing (unfortunately).

Everyone's got their theories and predictions, I know I do, and in just over 90 mins from the time of writing we'll find out who's right.

It's going to be one hell of a spectacle you can bet on that.
Holy carp, 8,000 views already? It was only last month that I was celebrating 7,000...I never expected it to climb that fast. Doing some rough maths, that works out at just over 22 views a day which is pretty nice, although I'd be interested to know how many of those are "unique" views and not just you guys who have me on watch, not that I don't appreciate your visits or anything.

So thanks for all the visits, and here's to the next 1,000 or so! I'll be doing something special when/if I reach the 10,000 mark, so look out for that.

Now, can we talk Doctor Who? Note: Foreign peeps who haven't seen the latest series, stay away from this bit. Also the same goes for people who haven't seen trailers for next time and don't want the beans spilled. Read on at your peril.

--------------------------------------------

OK, I think that's sufficient warning. Any spoilers are now your own fault.

So...was Turn Left not an amazing episode? Too flipping right it was, which I must admit surprised me for a Doctor-lite episode. It really showed how much Donna has changed since we first saw her in The Runaway Bride, which we got to see some of at the start of the new reality. It's clear that if she'd stayed like that then this series wouldn't have been half as good as it has been, so all credit to RTD for making her watchable.

What this episode also did to great effect is show how much the Earth relies on The Doctor, seeing as without him London is destroyed and the whole world plunged into chaos and disaster, but conversely how he needs us as well as without Donna to hold him back he ended up dead.

The inclusion of Rose was brilliant as well, it really made this episode that extra bit special for me. Well that and the hilarious Italian bloke Donna was staying with, but I digress XD. The ending was a fantastic lesson in suspense and tension, and huge credit must go to David Tennant for acting his socks off in that bit. When he starts suspecting that it was Rose, you could feel your heart race along with his. Top stuff.

To quote a friend of mine, next week's episode will be immense. Everyone gets together at long last, the Daleks return and all kinds of shazbot hits the fan. Plus, maniacal laughing Daleks? Count me in!

Robert Downey Jr. great as Tony Stark, and Gwyneth Platrow does a brilliant job as his assistant Pepper Potts. Jeff Bridges really adds some menacing gravitas as Obadaiah (sp?) Stane.

They really nailed the characters and the suit is fantastic, I honestly couldn't see the join between the CG and the real deal. If you go and see it, which I highly recommend you do, stay until after the credits - there's a little extra bit that's really worth staying for.

There was also quite a lot of foreshadowing, setting up some possible sequels very nicely - I hope this becomes a great franchise.

Thus ends mah movie review

-everything else-

Right, on with the more important stuff.

As I mentioned a couple of journals ago my final A level exam period is coming up very soon. In fact my first exam is only two weeks away. This means that I won't have a lot of time for AnyWho as I'll be revising, so it's on unofficial semi-hiatus until I've either finished my exams or find some spare time in which to do it.

Basically, don't expect too much from me too soon. I might still put up some photography as that's easier for me to do, but the comics will probably have to wait.

Oh and this week's Doctor Who was brilliant, don't you think?

Peace

That's right folks, for those of you not in the know (and if you're a fellow Brit Whovian like me, how could you not be?) Doctor Who returns for a new series tonight on BBC 1!

All new monsters, villains as well as some old ones - The Doctor's well and truly back.

Also, I'm off on two weeks easter holiday (a week or so after easter, don't ask >.> ) so you can expect some AnyWho action very soon.

Unfortunately, soon after I get back it'll be coming up to exam time for me so I can't promise much then, but I'll try and make up for it now and afterwards

Now, on with some stuff I know you've been waiting for.

THE ANYWHO CONTEST!

As I said in my previous journal, the winner gets a cameo appearance in one of the next AnyWho comics, along with a personal copy of their character for them to use however they like. I can't promise the comic willl be the next one though, because that depends on how fast it's all sorted out.

Now, the contest is in quizzical form - ten questions all about Doctor Who, funnily enough!
*Disclaimer - If you haven't seen the more recent series of Doctor Who, there may be some spoilers there. *

The winner will be the first person to get all ten right - post your answers in the comments for this journal! However, if no-one gets all of them by the end of the week, the winner will be the first person to have got the most right.

So, here come the questions!

1) In the Tenth Doctor episode "School Reunion", what version of K9 does the Doctor repair?
2) In the christmas special, "Voyage of the Damned", how old does The Doctor say he is?
3) How many Daleks are there in the "Cult of Skaro"?
4) In the Tenth Doctor episode "New Earth", the year is 5 billion and...what?
5) What colour are the trees on Gallifrey? (Mentioned in "Gridlock")
6) What model of TARDIS does The Doctor pilot?
7) In the first Ninth Doctor episode "Rose", what is the Ninth Doctor's first line?
8) In "The Christmas Invasion", what film does the Tenth Doctor start quoting by accident?
9) What is the Ninth Doctor's "catchphrase"?
10) What is the Tenth Doctor's "catchphrase"?

Good luck!

Note: ONE ENTRY PER DEVIANT!

(First of all, sorry for the delay on AnyWho >.> )

OK, so I may have had one of the best days I've had in a long time. In a nutshell...

I met David Attenborough!

This may only make sense to the Brits amongst you, although I think Blue Planet's been shown in US and A

Anyway he was doing a book signing in my local Waterstones, and I'd finished my lessons for the day early enough to get along. Luckily I took my camera, and you can see one of my efforts in my gallery

I queued for ages, and I was right at the back of a mahoooosive queue - I think I must have been one of the last people to see him. Anyway he was very nice about it, we said a few words to each other, along the lines of...

Me:"It's very kind of you to stay this long"

Sir David: "Well it's very kind of you to want to see me that much."

Me: "I've really been enjoying the series (Life in Cold Blood), like everything else you've done, it's wonderful."

Sir David: "Thank you very much."

Also, a very nice chap was kind enough to take a photo of me and Sir David together, which you can see here: [link]

(That's me on the left xD)

Awesomeness.

*Rant alert*

OK, I'm assuming that you'll all have seen the new fat-arsed ads in your galleries and fave sections if you're not subscribed, as I assume the majority of deviants are. This slipped in alongside the new "collections" feature, and yet curiously isn't mentioned along with the other new additions in the launch article: [link]

Just to clarify, the other ads on this site I can put up with - they're non-invasive and I understand that devART has to get some guaranteed revenue. But since when did it become OK to disrupt your day-to-day activities by plonking them right in your face?

Remember, this only applies to non-subscribers, which is the biggest thing that pisses me off. Since I started visiting and using devART, there have always been ads around the site as I said earlier, all with the tag-line underneath that said that you could get rid of them by subscribing, and when they were non-invasive this was good, like a suggestion. You could see that there'd be some advantages but there was no real pressure.

Now, however, they're getting in our way - just like they do when you're not a member and you try to view devs. This gives off the feeling that they're pressuring you to subscribe if you want a nice clean gallery, which is a bloody disgrace if you ask me. What you get when you subscribe should be perks such as using stamps and customising your journal and gallery, NOT something that you would expect as standard!

Sort it out, seriously.
