----CALENDARS----

On December 1st, I'll order the whole batch of calendars, so I have to have your orders by then! I can't give extensions on this deadline since in order for me to get everyone their calendars by Christmas, I have to order by December 1st. Information can be found below.

It looks like it's that time of year again - calendar time! :D

Surprisingly, I got my calendar ready ahead of time instead of in the middle of December or after the new year. Hopefully for those of you who are interested, this leaves enough time to order one.

As I do every year, I'm holding the same calendar special. How does it work? If you want a calendar (or more than one, even), leave me a comment or note. I will be taking orders for these until December 1. That leaves one whole month. Once I have all the orders, I'll order all the calendars, sign them and include a small pen drawing of whatever you want.

I'll also be offering the calendars cheaper through this sale than you'll find posted in my DA shop. On the DA shop I'll have them up for $30 (PLUS whatever shipping you have to pay), but if you order through me you can get it for $25 plus $5 shipping within the United States. So the calendar is cheaper, AND signed, AND you get a free small pen drawing. Woo!

Just a bit of information about the illustrations in the calendar - these are my thesis paintings that I did for my M.F.A. in illustration thesis. As mentioned in my previous journal, I have a massive overflow of Birdflower prints! D: Unlike last year where I nearly sold out, this year at DragonCon, not a single Birdflower got picked up. Needless to say, they're all quite sad that they didn't get nice homes.

Of course, this also means I have about 50 Birdflower prints sitting like a lead lump in a box, so I'm going to make an offer -

Usually I sell these for $15, as they are limited edition prints. They are 9X12, a run of 35, and printed on archival Kodak paper. They have sturdy backing in a crystal clear archival bag, all nice and sealed, and are signed and numbered.

However, for this sale, I will offer them for $10 each plus only $2 for shipping in the United States (usually I charge $3). This post may seem a bit late, but I was in Georgia for a few additional days after DragonCon working on something, so I only now returned home.

DragonCon was, as always, quite awesome. The art show blew me away as it always does. It seems every year the art gets better and the inspiration is overwhelming. This year I participated in the artist charity auction, of which the theme this time was "When Pigs Fly." We were assigned porcelain piggy banks to decorate, and I painted mine as a gryphon, complete with leather wings, beak, and tail, and feathers. It titled it I Wanna Be a Gryphon Piggy since with his tied-on beak and tail, he was pretending to be a gryphon. I was also quite excited to be awarded 2nd place in the charity pigs category! The best part was that all the pigs were auctioned to benefit the Georgia Alzheimer's Association, which is a disease that has affected the families of many people I know.

For all of you who came to my panel on drawing wings - thank you! I was deathly afraid that no one would come, but it turned out the room was nearly full of people wanting to learn some wing basics! I apologize if it was 80% bird wings, then 10% bat and 10% insect, but I warned everyone of that at the beginning. I will upload the printout in case anyone wants an extra.

Also, this year was a bit...odd in terms of what sold. Last year my Birdflower prints nearly sold out, so I figured I'd stock up this year to meet the demand. Strangely enough, this year I didn't sell a single Birdflower print! So, once I am able to ship them back to myself, I may put up a special sale for them since I only have about...50 Birdflowers looking forlornly up at me wishing they could have a nice wall to hang on.

Also, I know a few people were interested in some originals that I was bringing to DragonCon, which I couldn't sell until after the convention. The Wind Spirit Mask now has a new home, as well as "Breathe," "Winter Gryphon," and "End of the Path." My other masks are still available, three of which I have put on Etsy. You can find them here:

Also, I'm seriously considering participating in the AnthroCon art show this year. I'm not too familiar with anthro conventions, so anyone who has been to the convention, or is familiar with anthro conventions, please let me know if my work would fit in there. I don't do too much anthro work, but I definitely do a lot of birds and gryphons and fantasy animals.

Firstly, I want to thank everyone who offered words of support and well wishes for my father I was amazed with the overwhelming amount of support from all around. I'm pleased to say that my father is doing much better - his appetite is not only back, but healthier than before. He also has his sense of humor back which is very important - when you're recovering from an illness and surgery, you need to have a positive outlook.

Thank you also to those of you who bought art and purchased future commissions. With your help, I was able to help a bit with finances and things are a bit more stable. For all of you who bought art, I hope you enjoy your drawing, painting, or print and I thank you for not only helping me out, but for giving it a better home than tucked away in a dark portfolio, which would have continued to be its fate with me.

Right now I am in Atlanta taking a short break from preparations for the DragonCon art show. Just for clarification, I've been preparing for the art show for close to half a year and had my airfare and hotel purchased long in advance. I'm going to be very frugal and all the money I'm spending is money I already had put aside for this event. The DragonCon art show is a very important event for me. It's the biggest art show I participate in, and this year I will have a large bay, which means four whole panels of art!

Most of the work I'll have up will be originals, and I will have quite a few prints in the print shop. I also will host a panel on how to draw wings for fantasy art, and I will be participating in the Monster in an Hour panel with ~mistressofspam. If any of you are planning on going to DragonCon, stop on by! It will be a lot of fun.

I'll probably be quite quiet for the next week, as I will be immersed in the insanity that is DragonCon. Anyone who has attended will know what I mean. Hope to see some of you there!

Additional Note - and are totally awesome and even put journals up to help me. You should check out their art because they're both amazing and won't admit it.

I really hate having to write journals like this because I feel like I'm sticking my hand out and begging instead of posting art, which is the reason you watch me - to see art, not to be exposed to yet another 'oh please buy art' journal. But, this is a bit of an emergency situation at this point.

Several weeks ago, my father was hospitalized for an infection on his heel. He has diabetes and heart problems, so his feet are pretty prone to problems. Not to get into too much detail, but in the past few weeks his health has spiraled downward, to the point where he can't keep any liquids or food, or medication down. This was a side effect of one of his pain medications and he's been in the emergency room three times in the past four days.

This is where the financial part comes in. Since I am still looking for a teaching job, I am living with him and thus my living here results in higher expenses, as well as him helping me with things like student loan payments. With him temporarily out of work, money has gotten really tight. I am trying to cut back and help as much as possible, but it's becoming difficult, especially with all the additional medications.

I'm still going to DragonCon for the art show, but things will be even tighter. I already have airfare and hotel taken care of, so I've already planned on being frugal with other expenses. Even still, there are expenses here and now that need to be addressed.

I have decided to hold an small sale of some of my old art - not the super old stuff, but some not-so-recent work that I'm willing to sell.

No really, it is. And now I'm 24. I'm a year away from being a quarter of a century old and I don't like it. Not one bit.

Well, except of course for the cake. Though usually I don't end up getting cake or anything for my birthday so we'll see how this year goes.

It turns out I share a birthday with President Obama, too, which is rather odd, but kind of cool, too. I've never shared a birthday with someone like that before. :3

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who got a commission and helped me get my contacts. I was able to order them last week and they should be here any day now. I'm going to keep the stone commissions open a little longer, mostly due to interest from some people who wanted to get one later. There are plenty of stones left if anyone still wants one. Examples of previous stone watercolor commissions can be seen below.

I just got a big 'grab bag' of random cabochon gemstones, and although I got them mostly for adorning masks, I wanted to try using them for watercolor paintings.



Here are examples of a 'stone watercolor,' painting. The gryphon, for example, has a real 14X10 mm green agate. I take inspiration from the stone, then create a watercolor to compliment the stone. The stone is then attached to the watercolor painting once it is complete. I'm sure others have done things like this before, but I wanted to try it.

I'm also opening up a commission sale for these 'stone watercolors.' This is the time of year when I'm preparing for DragonCon, and with the added (massive) expense of a monthly student loan payment, plus the unwelcome realization that I'm on my last pair of contacts and won't be able to see after, it seemed a wonderful time for a commission sale.

I know it may seem that contacts are a 'vanity' item, but let me explain: I wear contacts because my eyesight is so bad, glasses lenses for my prescription are quite heavy (even with the super 'lightweight' lenses) and end up cutting/marking my nose. I've worn glasses since I was 4, and the constant weight of them is something I'm quite pleased to be done with. Without contacts, I cannot see at all. To give you an idea, my contact prescription is -7.00 (left) and -7.50 (right). Without corrective lenses, I literally can't do anything.

So, I'm offering these 'stone watercolors' so I can afford to...see.

There are two sizes I'm offering: 5X7 (as seen in the above painting) and 4X6.

4X6 stone watercolors are $25
5X7 stone watercolors are $40

Shipping is $5 within the U.S. since I use a bubble-wrap envelope and send it Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. Outside the US depends on the country. Please contact me to figure out shipping if you want it shipped internationally.

You may notice these prices are pretty low! That is because unlike my regular commissions, I will not be doing thumbnails or sketches for these. Now that I've officially completed my thesis, I am now going to start putting up my thesis paintings. For my M.F.A. Illustration thesis, An Illustrative Exploration of Birds of Prey in History and Culture, I created 10 watercolor paintings, each concentrating on a specific raptor and how that bird affected human life.

This Wednesday, April 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, I am having the opening for my thesis exhibition with fellow illustrators Goñi Montes, Yossaya Aisiri, and Heather Elder. The show will be at the StudioPlex Art Space in Gallery #143 on 659 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta. For anyone who will be in the Atlanta area, come and see some great art from four awesome artists, and mooch some free food, too. If you can't make it for the opening exhibition, the gallery will be open April 9-11 and 15-18 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

Also, I uploaded the six illustrations I did for the Teatrio children's book competition. Since the competition is now over, I felt it was safe to upload the images online. The style of these are quite different from what I normally do, but the competition called for more whimsical, children's book style work. It was a lot of fun and I like how the pieces turned out. I hope you enjoy them, too!

As I've found myself surrounded by heaps and heaps of small bits of watercolor paper that are too small for full paintings, but too big to throw away, I've decided to finally see what this whole ACEO thing is about and try my hand at a few.

My last quarter of graduate school is fast approaching, and I've started the research and illustrations for my thesis. Since I will be having a thesis exhibition here in Atlanta (probably in April), I will not be displaying any of the paintings online until after my thesis is complete. Some of you may or may not be aware of the recent news entry that was posted, concerning the stance DeviantART has on tracing works. In case you have not read it, you can find it here: [link]

I feel it is necessary for me to express my opinion on tracing, and clear up some misconceptions about tracing. I do NOT encourage tracing another person's art, even for an 'educational purpose.' Here's why:

The majority of work on DeviantART is not stock. This means it is not available for reproduction in any way (unless the artist specifies under a Creative Commons license). By default, it is 'all rights reserved' under copyright. I, as well as many of my friends, do not want someone taking a painting of ours, tracing over it, and pasting it up on their account. It is my understanding that the tracing policy would allow this, as stated here: We allow for the submission of completed traced works within the FanArt Galleries providing it is a tracing -- not just a copy -- and you bring your own, original elements into the completed deviation.

Many others have translated this the same way I have, which has caused many artists distress.

Reading the comments on the news article has resulted in people saying some pretty inaccurate things, and I will attempt to clarify them here.

Tracing helps you learn to draw.
The statement that 'tracing is valuable as an educational tool' is false. How are you supposed to learn anatomy and proportion if you simply draw someone else's lines? Drawing from life, for example, requires you to view a 3-dimensional real object and translate it into a 2-dimensional drawing. It also requires you to shut off the portion of your mind that says, "that's a head, and a neck, which goes into the shoulder..." and view things in terms of shape and value. All of this is explained very well in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, which is a book I would suggest to everyone.

When you trace, such as putting a piece of paper over someone else's existing work and trace over the lines, or pulling up their work in Photoshop and just go over it on a separate layer, you are not learning anything. This does not teach you any skills, and it does not cause you to develop as an artist. I'm not simply talking out my rear here - I have worked as a graduate teaching assistant for undergraduate illustration classes, and I have taken many, many, many classes myself. I can tell you, from experience, that tracing does not teach you anatomy, proportion, value, or any other fundamental part of art.

What about when you take a pencil drawing you did, and then trace it onto another piece of paper so you can paint it? That's tracing, too.
There are two major issues with this that make it completely invalid. Firstly, you have already done the pencil drawing yourself. You've already figured out the anatomy, composition, proportion, value, etc. And secondly, the image is yours - you have the copyright to it, so you may do whatever you wish. This is not 'tracing' as much as it is transferring. To transfer is to take an image you have already created, and put it on another surface (such as paper, canvas, wood, anything).

Comic inkers just trace over the penciler's lines.
No, no, no. Out of curiousity, does anyone recall the Kevin Smith movie Chasing Amy? Remember the poor inker who had to deal with all the people saying, "oh, you trace." As funny as it may be in the movie, many people have this massive misconception about inkers that "all they do is trace."

For the past 2 years, I've been constantly around sequential art students and teachers. I took a class with an incredible sequential art professor who explained inking and taught us inking techniques. Inking isn't simply popping off the cap of your nearest Micron and going over someone else's lines. It requires a knowledge of line weight, value, mark making, and a skill with the nibs and brushes.

In a way, it's creating a completely different work on top of the pencil lines. Not to mention, inkers don't simply do a search for cool pictures to ink. They are under contract and have the permission of the pencil artist to do their job.

As you may have seen, I put a poll up asking your opinion about a possible second 'special' for the calendars. Basically, for those of you that couldn't make the November 20th deadline, I'm asking if you would like later chance closer to New Year's. Those of you who ordered one before November 20th would STILL get it before Christmas and New Years - this second batch would just be a second chance for those who couldn't order in time. Please keep in mind that I want your feedback on this idea. If you feel it's unfair to those of you who have already ordered before the deadline, please tell me! I'm just trying to include everyone who wants one, but I don't want anyone upset, either.

Hey everyone, a close friend (who wishes to remain unnamed due to the specifics of this situation), is in quite a bit of financial trouble. He needs help quickly. So, =ladydove7 and myself and a number of his other friends are doing all we can to help raise enough money for him in time.

To help, I am going to offer a commission auction. What is a commission auction, you're probably wondering? It's quite simple - you bid for a commission, and the final amount determines the commission's size, complexity, and medium. There is only one commission available, and the high bidder wins the commission.

Here are the rules:

To bid, comment in this journal with your bid amount in increments of $5 or more. This means, if the previous bid is $20, you can bid $25. Or, you could bid $30 or more. Do not send me a note or comment elsewhere, since the bids need to be visible HERE to count.

My normal commission rules apply, meaning I will not draw anything explicitly sexual, mechanical, or anything that involves a copyrighted character you do not have the rights to. I'm pretty open to everything with a few exceptions. If you're unsure, simply ask!

Last weekend I had a birthday celebration with my friends =ladydove7, ~kaioshade, as well as two others who either don't have DA pages or I don't know them. >>; After an awesome hibachi dinner (which ended with the restaurant staff singing "Happy Birthday" in Korean with a drum and me getting half a sliced pineapple ), I got a present from =ladydove7, ~kaitou-lili, ~mechaban (my brother) and ~Imoendraco - they got me a tablet! A 6X8 Intuos3 tablet. T__T I was so happy. I've needed a tablet for a while, and now I have one. They're all so awesome.

So, of course, I've been completely sucked into playing with it. I even got a Tegaki-E account to play around with:
Windfalcon's Tegaki-E.

CONVENTIONS:

This year I will be at DragonCon in Atlanta, Georgia again I will have my work in the art show, so if you're planning on attending, come stop on by! I'll have mostly originals in the art show, as well as some prints in the print shop.

I'll have 9 of the 12 Birdflower originals up in the show, and all 12 will be in the print shop. Other paintings I'll be showing include Waltz, Sun Twins and Moon Twins, Battlecry, Apparition, Fern, and a bunch others!

I'm really excited about this year. I always get excited about DragonCon. Every year it's been a load of fun, especially the art show. There are so many incredible artists there every year, and it's an awesome experience to be able to talk to them all!

And now it's back to work on school projects and last minute paintings. And...trying not go get tempted by the tablet when I'm supposed to be working...

Ok everyone, this is going to sound like a strange request, but I'm kind of stuck here.

Everyone gets 'artist's block,' similar to writer's block except drawing or painting instead of words. I've had minor cases of this before, but it's hit me pretty hard right now. I've spent about 9 months in grad school, 7 of which were pretty much non-stop schoolwork. I had no time to work on my own art, and the few times I did, it felt forced.

Now I have time to work on my own art, but...I feel like I've lost something. Maybe my muse felt so neglected she decided to hibernate. I need you guys to wake her up.

Inspire me. Give me suggestions. What do you miss seeing in my gallery? What would you want to see more of? Don't be afraid to be specific. Suggest specific images, or even throw words, phrases, or poems at me. Is there an inspiring passage in a book you just read? Comment with that. I just need some fresh ideas, because to be honest, it's kind of scaring me that I can't feel that same inspiration I had before.

So help throw some ice water on my sleeping muse and wake her up! Here's just hoping she doesn't get angry and fly away!

It's that time of year again - time for convention art shows! Despite the stress and preparations, I really look forward to it each year. There's something really fun about matting work and mounting it and putting prints in bags. This year I'll have work at CONduit in Salt Lake City (though I won't be attending, as I'll still have class so I can't fly out there) from May 23-25, and in September I'll be in the Dragon*Con art show again. Of course, the best part about Dragon*Con is being able to see my friends from all over the country (and other countries as well) and have psychotic amounts of fun.

EDIT: It seems that even in this GIANT journal, I forgot to mention a few, key things. Many thanks to everyone who brought up important things that need to be mentioned.

The first being that (and I apologize if it seemed like my journal implied this), under this new bill, it's not as if your work is automatically public domain. The Orphan Works Act does NOT make non-registered works public domain. However, the automatic copyright we currently enjoy will not be as powerful under the new bill. Currently, if someone finds your work and cannot find your contact information, they still are not allowed to use your work. Under the new act, they would be required to search a registry (or more than one registry, possibly), and if you didn't register your work/information with those registries, then your work could possibly be used, under the assumption it is 'orphaned.'

These are all just that - possibilities. These are possible scenarios that could happen if the bill is passed. I'm not protesting this bill because it's 'omg evil they want to take our copyright away!' That is NOT the purpose of the bill. The people who made this bill want to protect copyright while still fulfilling the needs of people who wish to use orphan works. HOWEVER, there are too many flaws with the bill, too many opportunities for abuse, which is why the bill itself needs to be reworked and not passed.

I hope that clears stuff up.

My apologies if you've already read about the Orphan Works Act, but I felt this was necessary enough to post in case there are people who haven't heard about this bill.

Currently, as you probably know, in the United States your work is protected by copyright. According to the US Copyright Office on their 'copyright basics' page, "copyright protection subsists from the time the work is created in fixed form." What this means is, as soon as you create your picture, song, poem, or other original work, it is protected by United States copyright. If you want additional protection, you can register your work (individually or in a compilation) with the US Copyright Office for a fee. However, this is not required, and your work is still protected by automatic copyright even if you do not register it.

If someone uses your work without your permission, it is considered copyright infringement. This is why deviantART, for example, does not allow you to post screenshots from an anime or use music that is not your own in flash animations. That work is protected by copyright, and reposting it without the owner's permission is illegal.

But what if you find a picture that you really want to use, and you simply cannot find the owner to ask them permission to use it? This is where the issue of 'orphan works' comes into play. Many people and organizations, particularly museums, want to pass a law allowing unidentifiable works to be used without being barred by copyright law. If a painting belongs to an artist who cannot be found to claim it, these organizations still cannot legally use the work unless it is proven the work is public domain. The Orphan Works page on the US Copyright Office website explains the issues concerning possibly orphaned works:

_{"During 2005, the Copyright Office studied issues raised by “orphan works”— copyrighted works whose owners may be impossible to identify and locate. Concerns had been raised that the uncertainty surrounding ownership of such works might needlessly discourage subsequent creators and users from incorporating such works in new creative efforts, or from making such works available to the public."}

In 2006, an orphan works bill was presented and rejected due to potentially abusive flaws. In April of 2008, the bill was presented again, with changes (see here: [link] ). This time, the bill included the usage of registries, that would, in theory, make it easier for artists to be found through identification of their art.

The problem that many concerned artists have brought up is that if the artwork is not registered, it cannot be found. Artwork that cannot be found using " a reasonably diligent search" (according to the American Society of Media Photographers) will be declared as orphaned. Oy, as much as I dislike spring for the hot weather that follows it, I can't help but admit, even a little, that there's just something about springtime that makes you want to prance about. Yes, that is a strange image.

After four fun-filled days with =mistressofspam, we went to Montana and then to Yellowstone and Chico Hot Springs with ~kaitou-lili. I rather miss spring in Montana. Heck, I miss all of Montana.

Now I'm back at SCAD, in spring quarter of classes. One more year and I'll have my M.F.A. in illustration. It's kind of frightening to think about.

I've never been so busy with illustration before, but taking graduate classes at SCAD-Atlanta has me literally planning my day hour to hour. But I'm learning so much and creating some things I'm quite pleased with, so it's all very rewarding.

I'm most likely going to be taking summer classes (since I had to take 2 extra classes to enter the MFA program), so I'm going to be quite busy for the next...year and a half.

And in a little over a month, =ladydove7, *InsaneJudge and I are zooming over to Salt Lake City to visit =mistressofspam and then driving to Yellowstone National Park to see the bison. Ah, Wyoming. ;_; I do miss that area.

Aaaand, I've finally jumped on the Etsy bandwagon. I've had a plan for a while to make feathered masks (similar to the one I made a few years ago for a masquerade ball: [link] ). There's only one mask up so far, but once I make more the shop will be a bit more stocked.

I will be signing the first batch of calendars, as well as including a small pencil or ink drawing. However, in order to get a signed calendar with a drawing, you must contact me directly through note or comment. You must contact me directly - otherwise, if you purchase the calendar through DA, it will not be shipped to me and thus I will not be able to sign it.

Also, for this first batch, I am only charging $20, plus $5 shipping within the US and Canada (international shipping will be a little bit extra).

Clearing out the portfolio, I found a couple of paintings I felt like putting up on Ebay. Details can be found below!

Wow, the holidays really have snuck up on me. I'm back in Connecticut for winter break, and working steadily on finishing the rest of the birdflowers. My plan is to have all of the birdflowers done by the end of December, and making a 2008 Calendar available with each of them.

The calendar will feature the birdflowers with their respective names on them. Here's an example of what the image for September would look like: [link]

If anyone wants a print of any of the birdflowers, they are available as 9X12 inch limited edition prints. These are high-quality, lustre prints without the calendar text on them. They are also signed and numbered.

Unfortunately, the calendar will not be ready in time for Christmas delivery, but it will be available for purchase in early January. However, I'm going to offer something special with these calendars.

I will sign each 2008 Birdflowers Calendar that is purchased through my journal. In addition, I will include a small sketch with the calendar.

This is important - in order to get the signed calendar with the sketch, you must either send a comment or a note to order one. The reason for this is because if you order it directly through Deviantart, they will send you the calendar directly from the printing place - anything ordered through DA goes directly from them to you, not through me. I am posting this journal so I can order the calendars myself, and thus sign them and ship them out.

What do you get when you combine tons of crazy people, food, art, costumes, and the biggest fantasy/science fiction convention in the United States?

Four spectacular days of insanity!!!

Thursday was the art show setup day, which went surprisingly well. The only annoyance was that the line to get your badge, even for those of us who pre-registered, was OUT THE DOOR. On Thursday! Before the convention even started. It took us nearly an hour to get our badges, and then we were able to set up the art show.

Friday, the craziness started. *ladydove7, *Zephyri, =girlanime and myself dragged aaaaaaaaaaall our stuff to the Marriott, and there I was reunited with the wonderful *InsaneJudge whom I hadn't seen for over a year! T___T I also finally met =mistressofspam who is completely bouncy and awesome. Oh! And her dad. Her dad is the coolest guy ever. Oh, oh! And the mysterious and awesomely talented *jademacalla! This guy can climb stuff! Seriously!!!

Later we met up with ~kaioshade and our friend Jack (who has to mess up my whole journal-linky thing since he doesn't have a deviantART account! *shakes fist*). We had two rooms full of all these people and it was a great time.

Anywho, the art show. Last year was my first DragonCon, and the art show was incredible. This year is my second DragonCon, and the art show was PHENOMENAL. It was...*grabs thesaurus*...I'm running out of words for 'awesome' here. No matter how much your art has improved, seeing peoples' work in the art show always humbles you about 79%. Roughly.

I met lots of great artists, including *Nambroth, who is the nicest person ever. Her art is even more gorgeous in real life. And there were tons of artists there from deviantART. It's awesome walking through the art show and seeing a piece and going, "hey! I know that painting!"

For me, this year's art show was better by an indescribable amount. Last year I only had one 4X4' space where I displayed 4 paintings and didn't sell anything. This year was like...night and day. I had a small bay (3 of the 4X4' panels) and I sold nearly half of what I put up, including Dance of Seasons. I was a little sad to see it go, but I'm also very happy it now belongs to someone who will put it on their wall and enjoy it, instead me having it stored away.

I'm looking forward to next DragonCon all ready! I had such a good time with all my friends, and it was sad when they had to leave. I will give a dollar to anyone who can invent a teleportation device! And a safe one, too. I don't want to end up in some weird universe or in a million pieces. Seriously, a whole dollar. Think about it!

Now it's time to prepare for going to SCAD here in Atlanta. On Saturday I need to bring all my stuff to my new dorm and go to orientation. *ladydove7 and I are going to be roommates in ACA House. It's going to be 100% pure awesome.

Once I'm all settled, you may see a print sale. <_< Since I only have, oh...about 50 miniprints left over that I don't want to store away.

Wow, thank you all for the comments on Painted Feather: Phoenix, and to %fangedfem for suggesting it, and ^JesusIV for featuring it. It was a wonderful surprise waking up this morning and discovering it had been featured.

On a side note, I'm preparing for heading down to Georgia, where I will be staying with *ladydove7 for August until we head to DragonCon in late August/early September. It's going to be amazingly fun, as we're going to be there with *InsaneJudge, *Zephyri, =mistressofspam, among others that either don't have a DA account I can link to, or I forgot what it was @_@

After DragonCon, it's off to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, where *ladydove7 and I are going to be furthering our education! I'm going for my M.A. (or hopefully M.F.A.) in Illustration. It's hard to believe I'm already going for my Master's, when it seems like only yesterday I was heading out to Montana to start my very first year of college!

Also, on an unrelated note, after consideration and suggestions by a friend, I have decided to make the prints of the Birdflowers series limited edition. This means each print will only have 35 available! Once they're gone, they're gone. The first ones are going to be at DragonCon. Guess what time it is? That's right, time for shameless commission plugging!

Though in all seriousness, I just graduated from college and thus made a pretty big move from Montana back to Connecticut, which involved shipping ALL my stuff across the country. And, as you probably know, shipping around 15 boxes at 25+ pounds each isn't cheap. Add in grad school fees, a house with no food, and you get what is literally a starving artist!

Ah, with a writing minor you'd think I'd have more wit.

Anyway, back to the point of this journal. As you may know, I've started doing feather painting. Here are some examples:



Before I left Montana, I received a quite large number of turkey feathers, both wing (the white and brown barred ones that you see in the feathers above) and tail (the darker ones with a more squared end). So, there's more variety with the feathers instead of just the wing feathers.

I just received my last package today (of course it would be the most important one) - the one with my paints, so now I can begin painting again. Looking at the mass of feathers and my poor neglected acrylics, I've decided to do a little painted feather commission sale.

Normally, depending on the detail, I charge around $50 plus shipping for these. However, right now I will offer them for $35. Usually I would include shipping with this, but due to the fragile nature of these feathers, I will still have to charge for shipping (usually an additional $5).

While I can paint anything you want on these, I prefer to paint animals or fantasy creatures, as they fit more with the feathers.

I also have two original painted feathers for sale. These I did as a bit of practice, and to play around with character portraits. They are available for $25 each, or $45 for both together, plus $5 for shipping: Sold at DragonCon!

Now that I've gotten a few massive assignments and commissions completed, I am opening up custom greeting card commissions!

As mentioned in my previous journal post, these greeting cards are basic size (5X7 inches and the kind that open up) on heavy watercolor paper. I will paint a custom painting on the front, and a custom message in calligraphy on the inside.

Here is an example of the cover and an inside message:



Please note that the calligraphy would have more care put into it than in that example. Your message would have quite a few practice hands before I actually write the message on the inside.

After looking at the results and comments in the poll, I have decided that each card will be $35. This is for a custom 5X7" painting, custom calligraphy on the inside of the card, envelope, and shipping.

Here are some guidelines for cards:

Please don't request a massively detailed painting. Use the Jaygryph I linked above as an example: a single figure with a suggested background. I may be able to paint two figures if they're small. If in question, feel free to send me a note! I don't bite, I promise.

Pretty much anything goes for subject, but please don't request something that obviously is something I don't do. For example, birds, gryphons, unicorns, angels, and anything along those lines are fine. But motorcycles, aliens, cityscapes...not really my cup of tea. If you're unsure of the kind of stuff I do, just browse through my gallery, or send me a note.

You can have me write whatever you want in these cards, whether it's a birthday card for your grandmother, or a love letter to your boy/girlfriend (just please keep it clean). However, please keep it within two paragraphs or less. For those of you who failed middle school English, a typical paragraph is about 5 sentences

These cards will be done like my other commissions, in that you send me a note/email with your idea, I sketch it out and send the sketch to you. If you like the sketch, I start on the final piece. If you don't, I do more sketches until you do. With the cards, I will also send you a practice hand of the writing so you can approve or reject the placement of the words. Then, once you are satisfied with how it looks, I will put it in the card.

Whether or not I write your name or send it to you for you to personally sign is up to you. You may want your name in the same hand as the rest of the card, or you may want to sign the card yourself. Just let me know which you prefer.

It's hard to believe that it's time to start preparing for conventions again. It was only September when I breathed a sigh of relief at being done with DragonCon, when suddenly it's time to apply again! This year, I will also be sending in some prints to Conduit. I'll have some matted prints up, as well as some regular bagged ones in the print shop. I'll be sending prints of Dance of Seasons, Flight Lesson, Like an Angel, and the three Seasons portraits.

Also, I have decided to try something new in terms of commissions. I recently made a card for a friend of mine, and realized that others may like them, too. They essentially will be this:

The cards are in greeting card format (the kind you open up with writing inside) and are about 5X7 inches. Very basic kind of card. I will paint whatever you want on the front in watercolor, within reason. For example, if you want a unicorn with demon wings and fangs that breathes fire in front of a rainbow, that's fine. However, I won't paint an epic battle scene with 12 characters in front of a detailed castle. For a better example of what I'm talking about, here's an example of a painting I put on the front of a card: [link]

Additionally, I will write a custom calligraphy message on the inside. It can be whatever you want, but again, within reason - maximum two paragraphs. Here's an example of such card. Also, keep in mind calligraphy that I would be doing for actual cards would involve a few practice hands, and thus not be a sloppy as the example. This was basically a single run so I could show you format:

1) You tell me what you want me to paint on the front, what you want me to write, and in what hand. You can choose more than one hand if you like.

2) I complete the calligraphy first and then paint. I scan it in and send you a copy so you can see it before I send it out to you.

3) I mail the card to you, so you can sign it personally and give it to whomever you want. Or, if you just want me to send it to a specific person, I can do so.

I'm not sure what the interest would be in this, so any feedback would be appreciated. Would anyone be interested in getting a custom card, and if so, what do you think I should charge for them? I made a poll so you can help me decide what to charge: Poll.

It is also important to clarify that as with all my artwork, I retain copyright to the images painted on the cards. Buying a card is just that - buying the physical card. I still retain the copyright to the work, meaning no one but myself can reproduce/sell the work.

My art show reception went really well. The awesome and wonderful Lillian made lots of wonderful food and both she and Mo (=cold-summer-nights ) got me this gorgeous, huge, vaseful of green roses, other greenish flowers (were they chrysanthemums?) and pussywillows...which Darin and I made complete first-graders of ourselves over. It was such a great night, and I even wore - *gasp!* - a skirt and high heeled boots. My feet were completely dead by the end of the night. I also sold a few things, which made me quite happy.

Then today, I find out from a fellow student that someone in the Peace Institute on campus has been trying to get a hold of me for a while, to give me a gift certificate. Before I explain why, let me describe the Festival of Cultures.

Every summer, the Rocky Mountain College Peace Institute hosts the Festival of Cultures, which is essentially a huge event that includes artwork, poetry reading, music, dancing. The art show has work from children to adults. This year, there were, as I was told, thousands of works submitted. I submitted a piece back in 2005, also, and in 2006, I emailed my art professor and asked him to put Angel of the Outcasts into the show. I was in Connecticut over the summer, so I couldn't attend. After returning to school in the fall, I didn't hear anything about the outcome of the show, so I assumed nothing came of my piece in the show.

Then today, I hear that I won a gift certificate from entering the show, and I figure it's an honorable mention or something. I go to pick it up, and it turns out the lady had been trying to get a hold of me for MONTHS. She hands me the certificate, and I open it, and I go, "HOLY CRAP!" It was for $150 for one of the local art stores. I ask her what I won, and she tells me...

...I won first place.

I was dumbstruck for a while. Out of thousands of entries, my work won first place at the Festival of Cultures, Cultural Talent Demonstration. And I hadn't even heard a peep about it for 8 months.

So, I'm a bit on cloud nine right now.

A few days ago, I got a bit of good news. A rather large envelope came and inside was information and a letter from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. I've been accepted into the master of arts in illustration program at SCAD for Fall 2007!

I am hugely relieved (and honored) that I've been accepted. Now it's time to prepare for going to a new school with new programs and starting a new part of my life. It's amazing...I've been in college for 4 years already, and sometimes I still feel like a freshman.

In other news, I'm having my senior art show from February 12 -25 in the Ryniker-Morrison Gallery in Tech Hall at Rocky Mountain College, in Billings, Montana. My reception will be February 13 from 4:30 - 7:00 PM. I know the details probably are irrelevant to most of you, since only a handful who read this journal are in Billings. Still, any of you who will be in the area, feel free to stop by!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh I am back from Germany! Full of good food, knowledge, memories, and inspiration, I am ready for all sorts of things!

Heh, a word to the wise - BMI really likes to change gates and departure times. There were about 3 gate changes and 2 delays, all in the period of about an hour. No matter, though - I made it to Germany safe and sound and was greeted by the wonderful =InsaneJudge. In a 100-fact nutshell, here's how things went...

3. Food IS the best way to make me happy.

Out of all the pieces, I was particularly impressed with this one. Not only did the artist take the name and draw what they saw, but they painted it so beautifully. The blues and greens, the swirls and murky tones, the expression on the girl, all give this painting the proper feel for such a story.

There is such a mood to this. The moon creating such a subtle, soft light and the woman that could be real at first, but no...perhaps it was just the mist. Misty, dark, night scenes as this are hard to accomplish well, especially with colored pencils on black cardstock. That's right: this was done on black paper.

I was so sure that whoever picked Connemara was going to draw a fat little pony. I was only half right - instead of a pony I got a prehistoric horse! Definitely a unique twist on the name. Also, as a watercolor painter myself, I understand how difficult it is to get all that detail in without error. Just look at that fallen tree, and that murky water. And the trees in the distance! Wow.

This really caught my eye and wouldn't let it go. The simplistic style is perfect for such an amusing subject. The poor rabbit...getting chased all the way to Dublin. I was particularly impressed with the different colors mixed in everything.

Since no one managed to capture a screenshot of my 20,000th view, I'm going to give you all a second chance. Here's a contest to celebrate 20,000 visitors as well as St. Patrick's Day.

INSTRUCTIONS: Here's how this works. Below you will find the names of places in or near Galway, Ireland. These places are either areas, towns, pubs, streets, natural areas, etc, all in or near Galway. Your job is to pick one of these names, and draw whatever that name inspires you to draw. You do NOT have to draw something relevant to the actual place, in fact, I encourage you to draw something original - whatever the words inspire from your hand.

For example, if one of the names was "Baile Átha Cliath," I don't want you going and finding out that it's actually Irish for "Dublin" and then drawing a Dublin scene. I want you to draw what the words "Baile Átha Cliath" inspire in your mind, whether it's a woman in flowing skirts atop a green hill, or a man surging into battle upon a war horse. Draw what you see.

Inspiration is always good in heaps, especially when you have the time to act upon it. Just a warning - you're all probably going to be flooded with watercolor gryphons and warrior fae for a while!

Also I don't usually do kiribans anymore, but seeing as how I'm getting close to a pretty landmark number I figured I would make an exception. So, here we go! Whoever catches a screenshot of my 20,000 pageview gets a picture. It will be a 9"X12" piece in either watercolor, marker, or pen and ink. One character + small companion (dog, bird, etc. Nothing bigger than a lion), simple background.

As for trips, there are a few places I'm planning on going around Europe, and a bunch of places within Ireland. The most recent trip being to Rome for 4 days. I mean, really...you can't be an artist, go to Europe, and NOT go to Rome. I'm quite excited.

I have a lot of artwork to work on as well. This whole, "no assignments, only a final essay" thing is really quite pleasing and allows for a lot of accomplishment. Why can't all schools be like this?! *shakes fist*
