Driver Emergency Evacuation Drill Script

Good morning students, my name is ________________. Today we are going to practice an emergency evacuation of the bus. I know many of you probably do not ride a bus to school, but you may ride a bus on a field trip experience this year so it is very important that you understand what to do in case of an emergency. Please sit up straight, remain quiet and pay close attention as I explain the procedures.

First in case of an emergency, it is very important that everyone remain calm and listen closely to my instructions. Remaining calm will assure that you hear my commands and stay safe.

I want to point out the location of our emergency equipment should we need to use them. (fire extinguisher, body fluid kit, first aid kit)

There are four ways to exit a school bus in an emergency. The driver will instruct you on which exit or exits to use. The front door and rear door are the most common exits. However, every bus is equipped with windows that are clearly marked and can be used as an exit. Pull the red handle and push the window out to exit. There are also roof hatches that are only used if the bus is turned over on the side. You turn the handle and push up to open the roof hatch.

Your driver will designate two helpers to assist with the front door evacuation that we will practice today. I will need one helper to stand at the foot of the front door and assist students coming off the bus. Students, be sure to use the handrail as you step down the stairs. The other helper will lead students 100 feet away from the bus. I need all of you at the proper time to exit quietly and walk in a single file line to the designated area and remain quiet until the drill is completed. We will begin with the right side and alternate right to left until everyone is off and stationed at the safe area.

Your driver will appoint an older student to take charge should he or she pass out or become incapacitated while the bus is in motion. Should the driver pass out, the helper will immediately come forward, grab the steering wheel with one hand and activate the parking brake by pulling this knob with the other. Next, turn off the ignition key and when the bus comes to a complete stop, move the transmission shifter to neutral. Take the radio microphone and depress the side button and hold it while speaking clearly and slowly. Say this is bus _________ we have an emergency. After speaking, remove your thumb from the button so the dispatcher can answer and give you directions.

Today we will practice a front exit drill. Remember the driver is the boss and listen closely to my instructions. I need _______________ and _______________ to serve as helpers today. After all students have exited and assembled satisfactorily at the assigned point 100 ft. from the bus, the drill is over. However, should there be confusion, bring the students back and repeat the drill until it is done smoothly and effectively.
