So, I know I keep saying something about updating this (well, not really, but whatever) and starting some new ideas. The good news is that I have been trying some things out, musical, textual, and visual (though I am skilled at none of them). The bad news is that I have no idea how I'm supposed to get them onto the internet, without a serviceable computer and internet connection. I shall ponder this, for some time, but let it be known that my camera does work, and some of the pictures are pretty nifty. I have a roll of black and white to be developed, soon.

I have become acutely aware, in recent days, of several things.

Item the 1st: I am leaving in a day and a half.

Item the 2nd: I am also leaving my guitar behind, but it's in order to force myself to get a new one.

Item the 3rd: I have more money than I thought I would have. I am materialistically (and realistically) happy because of it.

Item the 4th: I have barely written, lately. I can't decide if it's due to lack of inspiration and/or will, or to a progressive disgust with the exceedingly self-indulgent writing that I see, more and more. That is, I admire all my friends who write, I truly do. What I am becoming more and more annoyed with is writing that is self-aware of just how "high-minded" it really is. In fact, I have a distinct problem with any sort of artist like that. Ernest Hemingway was incredible, and his economy of language was remarkable. It was due to his experience as a journalist. Poetry is much the same for me, lately; why must it be incredibly dense and difficult to read? A haiku is often far too short to judge by, but sheets of text (in both the visual and aural senses) is far too much. It cannot be all said at once--any decent composer will tell you the same thing. Show me large scale, yes! I love and adore large scale works. I also despise them, if they do not work. In the words of a (lost?) friend of mine, one should not have to be made to think too hard in order to understand. I myself am guilty of that transgression, but I pray and hope that I have escaped it.

[EDIT]
Item the 5th: I hate that camera. Four rolls in a row have not turned out. I'm not stupid, and I know what I'm doing, now. I think I'm just going to have to get a new camera. Until then, we'll see. Fucking piece of shit!
[END EDIT]

This may possibly be one of the last entries for a long time. I am unsure of what net access I will have, once I make it to Boston. All I can say for sure is that I know I will have it, this fall. But, for now, I will be without the web.

I will see some of you. Those who I do not see? I wish the best for you.

This is nifty:
And then get it either streaked in black, or do the thing where you dye the lower layers a different color. In this case, it would be black, because that's basically the effect I want. I don't know if it would look good. I do like the idea of having a black underlayer. Any ideas, folks?

In a few short days, I should have a new camera; an old friend is sending me what is supposed to be a really good camera with a 100 to macro lens on it. I'm really looking forward to it, as I want to try some macro stuff, soon. Really, I just want to take more pictures, though I don't find too many opportunities around here.

That reminds me of a conversation I got into, last summer. This area of the country is very beautiful, but I'm so very used to it that I don't see most of it, any more. It takes a really shocking moment of picturesque beauty to wake me up; otherwise, nothing really registers, anymore. I'm essentially disinterested in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, all of this area. That's why most of the photography I've got up, here, is not indicative of where I live. Soooo, in the next month before I leave, I'm going to see what I can do to try and shoot scenes that ARE indicative of the town that I grew up in. When I move, I'll have something to show people. Furthermore, when I come back to visit, I think I'll probably see this area differently, and that'll be important.

Sadly, I just realized yesterday that I haven't done any actual reading for about a month. I've tried, several times; I have "Life of Pi" and "Paradise Lost" waiting for me, but I just can't get around to reading. It doesn't help that, in order to cope with the fact that I don't have, nor do I want, friends from around here, I've become steadily and frighteningly addicted to the Internet. When I'm not on the Internet browsing Livejournal, eBay, and deviantART (thank you, Rachel, thank you SO much), I'm playing trumpet or guitar, or working, or doing homework (usually in that order of priority, too). But no reading. The worst part is that I really don't care; I know that I'll have more time, this summer, as well as a distinct lack of Internet connection, so I'll be forced into more reading. Or practicing.

Oh, and I got a job for Boston. Wooo! Pay is a little sketchy, but I should be able to earn around 350-500 a week, so I'm told. That is fine, by me.

This is nifty:

To all others: I am discovering music, again. It's kind of weird. It's not like I fell away from music and came back; I just feel like I'm starting to hear a lot of it for the first time. The last time I felt like that was last summer, but there's nothing even remotely close to that catalyst happening, right now. I'm just hearing things differently, for some reason.

Maybe it's because I'm moving soon, I don't know. This morning, I had a dream that I got into a big argument with someone over Mozart; she was saying that Mozart was really bad, and a sexual nutcase, and a nutcase in general. I started to get into the argument, started ripping into her because she tried to claim that the tradition of the castrato was started by Mozart. Then I woke up.

To prove my musicianship, though, I actually tried going back to sleep to finish the argument. I am totally hardcore.

I started to clean my room tonight. Organize things. Get my shit together for the Move.

I have so much music. Sheet music. Music books. Books on music. Books on composers. Full orchestral scores.

And I need more. I need to write more. Someday, I want to write a symphony. Until then, I'll settle for writing for a jazz group.

I am starting to get an idea for a solo guitar piece in lute tuning (a C6 chord, if you must know). I've been nurturing a couple of melodic fragments for the past couple of days.

I still don't have a job out in Boston. But I'm not going to be there for about a month and a half. So I'm safe, for now.

I want to start taking pictures, more. I have some that I've taken, so far. But I want more. I was told by a friend that he was convinced I'd be good at portraits, based on one that I took in Boston in a coffee shop. So now I want to take pictures of people. It'd be fun, and I wonder how many people would trust me enough to capture their souls on film.

Girls on film.

Instead of free-associating, more, I'm going to go to bed, because I work in the morning. Only 7 more weekend shifts to go, and then I'm on my way to Boston. Jesus, it's so close. It's such a strange thing to think that my life is going to be uprooted, so soon from now. The ageless questions are bugging me, too: will I really like it there? Will Boston like me there? Will people like me there?

No, really, I'm going to bed.

This is nifty:

Have you ever felt as if your vision has been muddy for some time? That is, say something happens, and you lose your focus. You can spend what seems an eternity thrashing around blindly, fully aware of your surroundings, but not being able to see anything for what it is. Some people will remain that way for the rest of their lives, cursing a single event for all of their troubles and woes. Others are able to rebuild and grow, becoming all the more wiser for it. To these others, vision is essentially reborn from death, though that is a terribly melodramatic way of looking at the situation.

At risk of sounding self-centered and masturbatory, I've begun to view myself as a perilous mixture of both. I tend to thrash around for a while, lashing out at those who are close to me, without being able to confront the situation--or person, as the case may be--that originally put me in such a disposition. Eventually, though, there will come a point at which I simply wake up (usually literally) and admit to what's been bugging me, and instantly feel the weight lifted from my shoulders.

That's kind of what happened a couple of days ago. Up until that point, the stuff that I've been writing, composing, playing, et. al., all of it has felt at least a little contrived and forced. True, pain does produce some of the most beautiful art, but it is unhealthy to be unable to focus on anything else.

That said, it is also necessary to exorcise those demons, if you will, in order to bring yourself around. The conflict that I have always had, in this case, is the simple fact that I'm a "nice guy"; I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. I've gotten better about being honest with most other people, but the ones that are closer to me end up never hearing my problems with them. This is often due to the fact that, along with being a "nice guy", I also have a very long fuse, and don't get bothered by all but the most severe of transgressions. Those severe transgressions are often enough to send me hurtling over the edge, and into one of my "thrashing" periods.

For better or worse, I think that the thrashing is often a result of what could very possibly be an enormous amount of pride and self-centeredness--I can't help thinking that "No one would ever do this to ME!" "Nothing like this could ever happen to ME!" It certainly is a little naive to think that way. And the lifting of the weight comes when I finally am able to accept that, in the end, I did everything I could, and did nothing wrong.

And that is why I've begun writing again.

This is nifty:

I was in the middle of posting this, this morning, when the computer locked up. I hate it when that happens.

Anyway.

Actually, I was all fired up and everything, because I was writing about my distaste for the entire "anthropomorph" genre. I was going to write about how I didn't like it at all, and thought that it was really silly, and how I know one guy through Livejournal that claims that writing for "furres", as they're known, is so much more interesting, because they have animalistic traits that make writing emotions more apparent, and. . . .

Now I don't really care.

I'm looking forward to moving to Boston. I just realized, yesterday morning, that my scholarship for Berklee is renewable until I graduate. That makes attending school at this place much more attainable.

In actual DA stuff, I've got a couple of ideas that I'm working on, but I'm not really committing, just yet. I moved a few things to the scraps section, because I didn't like the look of their faces. I might pull one of them out, though, and chop away and build on them; I think I've got some pretty decent ideas.

Also, I'm still going for #500 (as vain as I am), so be sure to take the screenshot.
To my friends in Boston, gutentag. To everyone else, yo.

This is nifty:

Dear Jonathon:

Thank you for taking the time to participate in our BEST application
procedure. We found the level of talent and musical promise very high
making it a difficult selection process.

We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to receive a $7000
scholarship to attend Berklee as a full-time student.

You must begin using this award no later than its expiration date of January
2007.

Fuck yeah. I like how even when I'm in a terrible mood, I get nifty little reminders of school. I'm coming to Boston, and no one will stop me, especially not a jazz improv teacher who thinks I've not a chance in the world.

For clarification, I just want to add that the max that they give for that particular scholarship is $8000 per person. Not bad for a depressing little trumpet player from Montana, eh?

This is nifty:

I'm up at 6 friggin' a.m. No idea why. Probably because I went to bed at 7:30 p.m. last night, which is definitely a first for me. Seeing as this isn't my main journal, I won't write much here. I did want to comment on the fact that in less than 12 hours, I have attained 16 message center items, which I find preposterous. Some of those aren't even new.

The money for my apartment should be arriving today. Roxbury isn't a bad area, is it?

Oh, my other journal--the one I actually use a lot--is here: [link] . I write things there, too. People don't always like it, but I also treat that journal as just that: a journal. Not everything that comes out on there is spoken truth or fact. But it's there.

Oh, and I have stuff to post, soon. I have to get some film developed, first. I wish we could post music here. That'd be swell.

Oh. If anyone has a story that they feel I should hear, I want to write it. In a discussion I had with a friend (platyfrog, you should check her stuff out too [link] ) and reflecting upon a conversation I had with a very good friend (I think. . . . She's here: [link] ), we were talking about the "voices" that we have in our writing. Some people have very set styles of writing. More to the point, some people write for children, and some people write for adults. I naturally write for adults, because I have a hard time "bringing myself down" to a child's level, and because I just think and speak in a way that's conducive to an adult's thinking. After thinking about this, I need to be able to write in as many styles as possible. It can only help my style--as well as my eventual teaching career. Even if you send me a picture, or something, I at least want to try it.

Oh, and I'm finished.

Oh, and for those who are watching, I sent off a very large chunk of money, yesterday. I am moving to Boston, and now have a place to live, when I get there. Now I just need a job, and acceptance to the school. I'm still moving, of course.

I like how it's a "devious journal entry". That makes me feel a little better.

I'm about 2 inches away from committing to a room in Boston, in Roxbury. It's in the "Multicultural" district. Interesting.

I found myself actually writing a poem, Saturday. But, of course, I can't find it. I'm extremely scatterbrained, lately. And those who know me are aware that being scatterbrained is normal for me, but the modifier "extremely" is unusual.

Stay tuned, though, because there's some things that will be posted, soon.

Okay, so I promise that I'm going to get some stuff posted on here, soon. I've got a bunch of pictures, a few of which I'm actually happy enough with to post (after I tweak them, of course). And I've got some little things percolating in my notebooks (all 4 billion of them) that I'm definitely planning on working with. However, one has to understand that this horrible awful job has laid claim to me for the past three days; I've been at work from 9 a.m. to 8-9 p.m. for the past two days, and today is going to be the same, and tomorrow is looking only a little better. And then, rinse and repeat next week. So, hold your horses.

Have you ever noticed how so many people, when they write something (and sometimes draw something), like to say, "I don't know where it came from. I pulled it out of thin air."? I must admit, I'm guilty of this too (though a long time ago), but it really does kind of bother me. It's redundancy to make one's self appear more interesting. Of course it was pulled out of thin air. It didn't exist before, but you brought it to fruition. Go you.

So, since I've had this for a little while, I'll explain what's up with it. I'm starting this as another depositing area for my writing. Though Livejournal is certainly handy to have (and I check it almost as much as I think about the trumpet), it's only one area to keep my writing, and frankly is not nearly as comment-happy as I'd like. I've always been a strong believer in using others' comments to further yourself, to get what you really want to say across. If you can only write so that you can understand it, then you're not good enough. So, some old things will find their way here, and definitely some new things. If only they'd accept music, now. . . .

Anyway, comments are always thirsted for.
