However!
It is self-promotion month here on dA (I'm sure you already know), and to add to the spirit I'm gonna do some advertisin' for meself! So hi! I'm Alf, 34, father o' two and hopin' to be a writer of sorts (oh dear I've already lost your interest didn't I?). Well, truth be told I've been on dA for quite a while now (3,5 years), but at first I mostly mucked about... the community spirit didn't catch my full attention at first (I'm kinda slow on the uptake ). I also don't often submit deviations and I certainly don't hand out a lot of critique worth mentioning (I'd love to, though), but hey - all the better for your inbox right?

This was all, by the way, an attempt to make you symphatize with me so'd you'd be real serious about what follows:
I write. I don't do it as often as I'd like to and I'd also like to be better at it, but anyway... Writing sort of started as 'a fun thing to do': it was mostly humorous fantasy-parody. However, over the past few years I started to take it more seriously, and began to experiment with styles, genres... it doesn't always work out, and ever so often the tale takes a strange turn indeed, but that's part of the charm. As a result, I'd like to think of myself as a varied writer. Check out these and tell me if I'm right:

On occasion, I also catch poetry... it usually starts with a song, I can't get the melody out of my head so I make my own lyrics to it and call it a poem. Of course, Anathema themselves also had some nice surprises in store; first and foremost the fact that Anneke van Giersbergen (Agua de Annique, ex- The Gathering) joined them onstage for "A Natural Disaster", "Parisienne Moonlight", "The Blowers Daughter", "Temporary Peace" and "Angels Walk Among Us", the hilarious, impromptu ska-version of "Hope" and the brilliant new song called "Universal". All artists were in an exellent mood, cracking jokes throughout both sets.
It was, however, more than a mere gig, as I got the chance to hang out with a lot of friends I hardly ever see, including deviants (~snow2fall and ~Neur0nix). I also purchased the Danny Cavanagh/ Anneke Van Giersbergen live album (from the shows in Tilburg, one of which I attended) and the new Leafblade, with artwork done by the most wonderful lady ~valhalla-vania

At home things are getting tidied up after we finally had new windows installed earlier this week (double glazing), something what caused a bit of a mess. Also, we're getting a new internet provider as of next month, and the switch may keep me offline for a while -just so you know.

It's been touch and go (as it is always), but last sunday the missus and I managed to get away and attend the second day of the Scottish Weekend in Alden Biesen. We were a bit late to see much of the Highland games (I've been indefinitely banned from caber-tossing ever since that incident with a pottery stand suddenly running on field), but we did get to see some of the awards, and the mooning involved with it. What else? Bagpipes! Haggis! Gordon's! Men in kilts! I've seen more hairy legs in one afternoon than I have all year. We spent over 20 euros on fudge, and still only got have the flavours they had available. And man, that stuff is GOOD!!
It was also a chance to see Snakes In Exile play live again, haven't seen them in ages either! It was a most welcome getaway.

Only a handfull of days till the Anathema/Leafblade gig too!

Today is the last day of my holidays... as of tomorrow, it's back to the auld threadmill! As always, I had a lot of things planned for these seventeen days off -and, also as always, most of them didn't happen. Still, we have not exactly been idle either, as I have finally cleaned up both the front- and backyard and we have made up our minds regarding what tiles we want for our terrace. In fact, those were delivered early this morning, and I spend half the day wheeling them round the back, unloading them and sorting them out (they come in three shades of grey). My lower back won't shut up about it.

I've also managed to kick my arse into writing on a regular basis... that is to say, for the last few days I've written stuff every evening! For a while I've been telling myself I should to write at least one page of prose or some decent lines of poetry every day, but this is the first time I managed to do so. Hopefully, I can keep this up.

1. I always tend to look on the bright side of things.
2. Even though I am easily stressed over little things, I am totally calm when there is an actual crisis.

10. My life has been an uphill battle against low self elsteem, but lately my fighting seems to be done on level or sometimes even higher terrain. Of course, I must now remain alert for that other potential adversary known as 'ride'.

Oh, and I noticed saying stuff in your journal like: "hey, this deviant is back from a long time away, go check them out" only drives them back to wherever they went off to in the first place, but (against better judgement) I'm gonna give it another go (hope springs eternal). Now, for something completely different. As some of you may know, I don't really follow the news and stuff because it tends to get on my nerves. A lot. Yesterday, I was switching channels, and I caught about half a minute of a news item. You see, around the turn of the century they installed a 'foundling shelf' somewhere in Antwerp, where mothers who need/want to abandon their babies can leave them in a safe and comfortable environment where they are sure to be found right away. There has been a lot of controversy around it, and I agree it is sad that such a thing is needed, but it sure as hell beats the dumpster!
Now, yesterday, someone abandoned their baby there. And, apparently, the law states there has to be a search for the parents... So basically, we have this way where parents can anonymously deliver the child they for some reason can't (or won't) raise -which I imagine is not an easy thing to do- only to get the cops on their tail ànd have it smeared onto national television!! Way to encourage others to choose this option over the dumpster!

Yep, that was thirty seconds of the evening news and I already had my head in my hands.

On a heavier note: our little girl Rune (now aged 5) and I were on our way to the store when we had the following conversation:
Rune: 'Daddy, put on some of that loud music!'
Me: ' What do you mean, honey?'
Rune: "You know, loud music! The kind that goes "wééing wééing wééing!", with high pitched voices.'
Me: 'Is this music I've played in the car before?'
Rune: 'Yes.'
After a moments consideration I put on some Dark Tranquillity.
Me: 'Do you mean something like this?'
Rune: 'Yes!!'
Me: 'You like this music then?'
Rune: 'Yes!!'
She'll be fine.

We did some harvesting as of late and lo: our redcurrant bush (what has exploded, I planted it two years ago and it's already twice the size of the one my grandparents have had since the sixties or so) provided us with 3,5 kg. of berries. Also, our neighbour invited me to rummage through his blackcherry tree (good for 8 kg.) and my girlfriend went to her friends' orchard and came back with two crates of cherries, one of redcurrant and a bucket o' raspberries. We now have a years' supply of yummy homemade marmelade, but of course we share. I'm getting another redcurrant bush this summer!

It should've be the weekend of kings, what with Rune's birthday on saturday and today being fathers' day, but alas. Yesterday was pretty okay, except that Cindy had to work so we couldn't really do anything extraordinary for Rune's birthday; and the fact the washing machine had what could be referred to as 'an accident', causing water to leak all over the place. Fortunately, it was only a bolt Cindy didn't quite secure, so it was rapidly remedied. We did have a good clean-up on our hands afterwards, which is never fun in the evening.

And then, today. The house was still a mess from last night, and we had guests coming for Rune's birthday. Her cake wasn't decorated yet, so I had a serious pile of chores to tackle today, Cindy of course having to work again. Finally, with everything cleared and the guests back from whence they came (), we decided to hit the fun part of town and go to the playground. And that would've been the end of it if I didn't run a flat tire here on the driveway when we came back. Since our driveway is rather steep I had to get the car on the road to change the tire. And the spare wasn't exactly bursting with air either.

But enough of this gay banter, let's talk business. My boss asked me if I were willing to put in some overtime for the next few weeks, and since Cindy took parental leave for the next two months this bit of extra income is most welcome - I hate months that end with a diet of ol' boots an' mud!

Well, must be off - haven't had dinner yet!

We also cleaned out the shed and it was impressive how much junk you can accumulate in two years. Fortunately, most of it was stuff people told us to keep because 'it might come in handy', so we send all that rubbish to them.

Oh yeah, and we set up the pool for the first time this year, kids loved it. Which reminds me: we lost our Rune last night! When we went upstairs to sleep we (as always) went in her room to check and found her bed empty. No need to panic, there are many other place for her to be. Toilet - no. Kai's bed - no. Our bed - no. Um... her closet? no. Okay, feeling the need for panic rising. Luckily, we then found her on this huge oversized cushion behind Kai's bed.

Well, it's gettin' dark here, I better go water the plants. Cheers!

I was actually writing a journal entry yesterday, when I realized the motherload of it was all about dishwashers... I figured I must be the most boring, dull, drab and lifeless goon here on dA.

Anyway:
My daughter has her first dance performance next saturday, looking forward to it in a mix of pride as well as some anxiety. She's a headstrong stubborn young lass who isn't the easiest to teach to - can't imagine where she gets it from- and she will be facing a big crowd of total strangers. I went to pick her up from the final rehearsal this afternoon and she was totally shagged out, poor thing. But I have faith.

About three weeks ago my laptop kicked the bucket (harddisk broke down and had to be replaced), hence my long absence. It was an interesting time, I got a lot of reading done and watched some movies, all in all very relaxed. I did also lose some work-in-progress, alas, but that’s not the end of it. My inbox now has 180 deviations and 183 massages for me, so I won’t be bored anytime soon I guess. Funny thing is: I sorta knew this would happen, as it was my third dA-anniversay, and I missed the previous two thanks to computer troubles as well. I think we have a tradition! Good thing I made it back in time for Mudkip Day, though!

Last but not least, I developed a new talent for discovering concealed sharp edges, as my hands are cut all over.

So, what did I miss?

Therefor
I'm to post eight (8) things about meself. Luckily, nobody said they had to be interesting, else I'd be in trouble. Here goes:
1. I'm terribly clumsy, what sucks tremendously seeing as out house needs a lot of work. Add to that I procrastinate a lot... there are people who make better housemates.
2. I'm not the most talkative person, though I can ramble on till there's no tomorrow about music.
3. I appear to have a weird taste in music... I'm not really into genres as such, I like music that offers variety and I prefer bands that change a lot rather than make the same album over & over again. Among my favorite artists you'll find Anathema, Pain Of Salvation, Íon, Antimatter, Pink Floyd, Dark Tranquillity, Tiamat, Leafblade, Chamber, Dana Fuchs, Eluveitie...
4. I have just joined facebook. Any more of you on there?
5. I have trouble remembering things... I used to remember everything: not just when and where I met someone, but also what they were wearing, what they ate, or drank, said, who was there too, what songs were played... but nowadays I go upstairs to do something and when I get there I have to stop and think what it was I wanted to do again...
6. I can't ever find me slippers... I discard them somewhere but somehow they always get knocked under a closet or bed or something and they're gone for DAYS! I think it's a curse, one of them twopenny ones.
7. I find it hard to blow me own trumpet.
8. No matter what shit hit my fan, how crappy I feel, all it takes to raise my spirits is one tiny thought about my kids... even if it's just the way they mispronounce a word. Sometimes I think they're a bigger source of strenth for me than I am for them!

Out In the Snow:

As beautiful as wintry snow is, things can get a tad bit complicated. Yesterday, all we wanted to do was fill the car up with gas and stock up on supplies. First, the carkey wouldn't turn cos the ignition was frozen, so I had to get a blowdryer and an extention cord. This helped, and we were off... for about half a mile. Just in front of the bridge across the canal, in the middle of the most dense crossroads in town, the car went on strike. There was a gas station just across the bridge, but it being snowy this was quite a push (I REALLY need to work out!!). Luckily, a passing pedestrian provided us with a bit more push. But having arrived at the gas station the machines wouldn't read any of our credit cards! Good thing I had plenty of cash on me though.
I often remark that interesting things don't happen to me but if this is an indication for 2009, I'm set! The first thing I did this year (besides getting up) was strain a muscle in both shoulders and upper back, but that seems to have healed now so bygones. This happens occasionally, I'm getting used to it.

Speaking of wintry driving - any of you watch Top Gear? I only seen a handful of episodes meself, but there's some great stuff they do even if it's mostly about posh cars. Hey, I watch it and I don't care ONE BIT about cars!

Time to evaluate stuff an' make new resolutions I reckon! Here we go:

Auld resolutions:
- Read more: 2007 saw me reading 36 books, 2008 only 30... but I do believe i read twice a smuch deviations, so, I'm callin' it a succes!
- Write more: I think I submitted more written deviations, but I still haven't written a word novelwise. I am constantly thiking about it though, and they constantly keep changing in my head...
- Be more patient: Okay, I am. Not as patient as I want, but it's a work in progress.
- Be more relaxed: see above
- Hang out with friends more often: Aach, utter failure!! But on the other hand, they didn't hang out with me any more either!! (kidding guys, love you )
- Taste more beers: Done!! Fell in love with Tripel Karmeliet and sampled some more great ones, some still waiting in the fridge.
- Taste more whiskey: Well, I did open my bottle of 'John, Mark and Robbo's "Smooth Sweeter One"'... so that's one...
- Taste more tea: Oh yeah, I've become addicted actually... there's no stoppin' me now!
- Taste more ice-cream flavors: a couple, don't recall exactly which ones though... yay for Italian ice-cream!
- Get a better job: No, still at the same place, but somehow it feels better this year. Of course, I'm using up my three months of parental leave so I'm home every wednesday.
- Do more chores: Okay, I do, but still not enough. I'm a horrible procrastinator. I wanted to put 'stop procrastinating' with my resolutions, but decided I'd wait another year.
- Develop some common sense: Damn, this totally eluded me! Haven't given it a moment's thought, really...
- See more concerts: Definite success as I attended a festival (Bospop), which makes up for a lot of shows already.
- Start working out: I... go o the market almost every wednesday. no, that doesn't count.
- Be more supportive: Well... I have my moments. If you've anything you'd like me to feature here on dA, let me know.
- Learn to give proper critique: No way near yet.
- Bake stuff: Nay. I did get some equipment to do so, though...

Resolutions for 2009:
- Stop procrastinating!! Nòw!!!
- Send out those chistmas/new year cards & gifts!
- Get a lot of work around the house done.
- Brush up my French
- Learn more about mythology/ culture
- Be more patient and relaxed.
- Hang out with friends more often
- Learn to give proper critique
- Be more supportive
- Start working out
- Bake stuff
- Write more

There you have 'em. Now to follow them through (hey, I did a pretty good job this year, as I usually NEVER follow any resolutions through)!

How about them Holidays?:
Contrary to all expectations the holidays were enjoyable. Christmas eve was a bit of a drag but that was cos I had to work nine hours (got up at 6) so I was tired. Christmas day was completely devoid of drama, which is a first time ever -hey, maybe it's cos I try to be more positive in life! My birthday (dec. 27) was more calm than anything, but that's okay too. How did you all do? Have a good time? Made any resolutions?

I woke up today to a peaceful world veiled in the purest white! Some of you may be sick to death of snow, but it's been three years since we had anything close to a winter here so I'm excited!!

I spent the morning playing outside with the kids (and some other people's kids as well) and brought them home exhausted as hell (my kids, not the other ones. They can get home on their own )

Last sunday we went to Tilburg to see Mick Moss and Duncan Patterson play a great set of acoustic Antimatter/Anathema/Íon songs, interspersed with a few covers ("Working Class Hero"!!) and some old movie/TV tunes ("Star Wars", "Knight Rider", "Ghostbusters"!!). It's amazing how Mick can sing just any song like it belongs to him. I also met some old online friends, and even deviants as ~Neur0nix and *valhalla-vania. Definitely one for the books.

Wheels in Motion
My girlfriend's car decided to kick the bucket on us, so we replaced it today with a second hand Citroën Berlingo [link] People have kindly been informing us they think it's a very very ugly car (), but hey: it was there, available and -above all- met our requirements: that it has a big trunk you can remove stuff from without having to lift it (my girlfriend's got back issues) and has sliding sidedoors (which are a godsend when you have to (un)load kids all the time ). It also drives pretty smooth.

Harvest
I never would have expected, but I managed to harvest some from the things I planted last year: we had some berries (I don't know what they're called in English but here's how they look: [link]) and our tomato plant did really well - in fact, some of the tomatoes the kids plucked and threw all over the garden now sprouted new plants!
There's also nuts. Last year, all our nuts were stolen by various miscellaneous critters, but this year I managed to salvage some.

The Sound of Music
At this point I should be boring you with how great the Leafblade concert was last night, but sadly the tour got cancelled cos Sean Jude suffered a wrist inury. Ah well, they'll be back in a couple o' months, no doubt.
Besides, there's plenty more happenings to look forward to :

- Dark Tranquillity & Poisonblack (oct. 27)
- Mick Moss & Duncan Patterson (nov. 16 - this gig is in Holland, but Tilburg is pretty south so if there's no Belgian date I'll probably head there. )

Downer
Had a less-than-great weekend, me. We send the kids away to my parents so we could paper the hallway. Trouble is the bit of hallway we set out to do is full of nooks and doors and a small window + the electricity closet, and the walls are old and in a sorry state... add then the simple fact that I suck at that sort of thing. It's not that I'm a complete screwup: I can paint, sand, assemble furniture, umm... that's it, really. Okay, I AM a complete screwup!
In short: it was hell! We actually spend an entire day at it...

I Feel Like... Bark??
I've had dozens of cats in my life. I adore them, they're soft and small and they curl on your lap and make you feel good about yourself just by petting them. But lately, a strange feeling has come over me: I want... a dog. I think it's a settling down thing: we've got a house, kids, a garden... a dog just kinda... fits the picture. Plus it'd be great for the kids (the cats have always been scared of them, so they can't play with 'em). It will not be for today or tomorrow though.

The Riverflow
One has to keep one's life exciting! Tonight, we send Rune to bed without her diaper! She's been frequently going to the toilet at nights, but some mornings we still found her with a wet diaper. We're starting to suspect, however, the wet diaper is just laziness - like "Oh, I don't have to get up, I'll just do in in my diaper!"
We'll see tomorrow...

Sleek
Not everybody was very pleased with v6, but I loved it from minute 1!! My inbox looks fabulous, and the transition went smooth as anything: one minute i was checking my old inbox, the next I had this brand new sleek one!! Praise dA.

Natural Goodness
Cindy's aunt was so kind to give us a bunch of dried leaves from her lime tree - the tea tastes AWESOME!! I've never been too big on the whole lime tea-from-a-bag taste, but this is really different stuff. We've been thinking for a while what trees to plant in our backyard -we wanted fruit trees, but now it's definitely gonna be 1 lime! I believe they also cast an exellent shade.

Rocking Abroad
Yesterday, the wyldhoney went to Holland (which I don't really consider to be abroad) for the Bospop festival. Had a great time, met with some Leafy friends (as well as other people), and saw some great shows! Dana Fuchs played a good set of soulful blues (or bluesy soul) with rocks in it. Thin Lizzy was okay musically but the singer was only so-so, therefor I had no problem leaving their show early to get a good spot for Anathema, who were (of course) great! The band was really in the mood, as Vinnie stated: 'it's nice to play something not-so-metal, as we usually play festivals with bands called "Thy Morbid Cunt" or stuff like that!' We got some awesome versions of 'A Natural Disaster', 'Angels Walk Among Us' and 'Flying'. They were followed by a most dynamic Riverside and Opeth, who played a surprisingly heavy set! After that there were no really interesting acts anymore (Ted Nugent may be considered an interesting personality though ) until it was time for Europe! I was really into them when I was 12-14, but this was my first opportunity to see them live. They sure were good, finding a perfect balance between the hits and the rocking hard. A day well spent!

Well, there's a big upside to it cos we went over/through the couch again, looking for change and finally bought ourselves a laptop!! It has a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide screen which I love bigtime and a lot of new features (Vista and others) which I'm still exploring. Hopefully our PC troubles have been called to and end now!

I'm really looking forward to writing on the computer again (didn't dare with the previous one as we never knew when It would crash and I'd lose everything...), though I can't say if this will actually result in more deviations...

Anyway, here's to hoping for the best an' such!

Last night, the wyldhoney slept in a bed for the first time since april 2007 (yes, that's '07). More so: he's gonna sleep in it again tonight! In other words: we finally gotten our bedroom furnished. The stuff is wooden, dark brown and sober and actually a bit too bigbut we only have small bedrooms so there was nothing else to do. It sure was the best night's sleep I've had in a long time -maybe the wyldhoney is getting a bit old to sleep on the floor and whatnot.

In other news: LEGO has fabricated a fraction of trolls for their medieval setting. First vikings, then undead, now trolls... why o why couldn't they come up with this stuff WHEN I WAS A KID??!

Oh well... maybe I'll purchase some stuff 'for when my kids are old enough', hey?

It would appear my PC isn't a total loss at all. It still has a lot of issues, but at least I can get online occasionally. Yay for that.

So, how 'bout them mudkips? At first I thought it to be some kind of virus, but then it dawned on me: it's probably April Fools! Yeah, I know I'm kinda .
But hey, I had a lovely day of working outside in the sun yesterday -beautiful sky with great big fluffy clouds. And to think less thana week ago I was building a snowman in the backyard! Okay, it's kinda disturbing that you can walk around in your T-shirt in the heart of january nowadays, but for now I'm taking it lightheartedly.

Must away now, my girlfriend is visiting her relatives in Germany for the day (in my car!) and I've got the day off to take Kai to the pediatrician for a scheduled shot, and probably the playground afterwards.

Well, not entirely. We can still send (and recieve) emails and use Word and such, but browsing, surfing, hanging round on forums and keeping track of my dA-account is no longer an option (I'm typing this at my parents, in case you should wonder ). A new PC seems to be in order -though I think the mouse and the harddrive, which are only a year old, can be kept. In onther words, you won't be seeing much of the wyldhoney in a while (new PC costs money, which we don't really have with a bedroom in order and just having bought a new washing machine ). I will have, of course, more time to get some writing done.

So, along with the first real snowfall we've had here in over a year, winter falls over our dA-gettogethers. I shall of course be online frequently, whenever I visit the library or sometimes when I'm with my parents or so, but don't be offended/surprised/sad/mad/happy/horny/sickened... if I don't get the time to reply to your deviations/journals/comments... It's been 8 days and I already have 61 deviations and 90 journals/comments/news articles and such in my message box.

On with more personal news: I had a rough 24 hrs. yesterday. The kids both had a clog of slimes behind their eardrums causing frequent infections, and medication didn’t really help as well as it should. So yesterday we got up real early to get to the hospital and have the stuff removed. The wait during the operation and recovery took over two godawful hours but when we got our kids back they were fine, save some pain and a few nosebleeds. As we were advised to get up every few hours of the night and check on them we did however not get much sleep last night.

Been a bit of a week here… my girlfriend got diagnosed with lumbago, but it keeps lingering so they now fear it could be a hernia. The poor lass can’t even pick things up and getting in and out of bed is hell. Meanwhile I had another gastro-enteritis last week, followed by proper flu garnished with fever, sore throat, a nasty cold, a fried egg on top and spam as we speak. The kids are sick too. Still, it's comfortable to spend the afternoon on the same couch under the same blanket watching cartoons (go check out Pocoyo![link]). It's less comfortable to watch my back-aching beloved one suffering as she tries to take good care of us.

The news reports scientists managed to give a mouse headcold. You go, guys.

There is also good news though, as on a more healthy day we finally managed to go and order ourselves a bedroom (bed, closet and commode). It was a bit tricky because all our bedrooms are small, with doors in awkward places and chimeys in walls so we really had to measure every inch of every piece of furniture thrice to make sure the stuff would actually fit into the room.

On a creative level all is same old, same old. I’m having a lot of ideas and very little time. In fact, I’ve put all poetry on hold in favor of prose (poems weren’t getting anywhere at any rate). Doing some slightly autobiographical memory lane-based stuff, a bit of weirdness based on real-life people and/or their art, and even (if I may quote Tori Amos here) ‘a sorta fairytale’ (though it’s actually getting rather naughty already).

Had a happy day today. Don’t really know why, just woke up all positive -even though my neck hurt from a less than great sleeping position (we haven’t slept in a bed since last april). There was no bringing the wyldhoney down. When I came home from work and my girlfriend was in a panic cause she hadn’t had time to get any food on the table and forgot to go to the baker I could not see this as a problem. Even that enormous knot in my hair after I undid my pony (well, war horse) tail forcing my girlfriend to take out the scissors couldn’t get more than a “ah well…” out of me. Maybe it was a leftover from yesterday (another great day, did lots of chores, finished a story I got stuck on...). Maybe it was this beautiful day, good temperatures and a clear wide open sky. Possibly it’s all that camomile tea and my reacquaintance with me auld friend Grimbergen Optimo Bruno. Probably it was all of it. Anyway, hope you all get to feel like me too!

First off: the not-so-great news. Our computer (an old, battered thing) is giving us more and more trouble: stuff suddenly doesn’t work anymore, we get error messagers in the strangest places and everything eventually points to words like “crash” and “death”. So should you notice I’m quite absent: that’s why. We’re thinking about a new computer, but of course money is a bit of an issue there. Ah well.

Secondly, the jolly news: Surely you’ve all heard the rumour Santa is really your father? Well, it’s not true (except in one case)! Yesterday we went to the biiiiiig flower store in Hasselt and lo, not only was Santa there, but he was also, in fact, the father of ~Secret-Shadows!! This got us extra treats, and I’m sure Rune was impressed Santa knew her name right away

And the good news: I’m coming close to my 3000th pageview (yeah, I know it’s not much compared to some, but I’m not some ), so keep an eye open –if you happen to catch it, the reward is a big wet kiss. If you catch it before 2008, you’ll even get three of them!

The day has gone slightly different than planned. In stead of a normal working day I got sick leave due to gastro enteritis, which made me spend a lot of time in the privy - so I did get some reading done. But I'm not very big on the whole experience, you know, foodwise and such... While resting on the couch, waiting for my doctor’s appointment, I couldn’t find anything better to watch on TV then Nigella Lawson. Don’t get me wrong, I like her. We even have one of her books. But getting all this stuff you can’t have shoved in your face… I’m talking about the food here, not Nigella herself. Although she’s not half bad at all… why am I telling you this?

Furthermore, after delivering my doctor’s note at work, my car went “CLONK!” and then “Chhhrrrrrrrr…”. I pulled over and saw the exhaust pipe had somehow broken. And it’s not like a drive an old wreck, the poor thing is less than five years old. Luckily, a bit further there was a guy who repaired electrical appliances and he greatheartedly provided me with a bit of old wire with which I could tie the pipe to the undercarriage. Continued home at a mild 30 km/h and made an appointment with the garage, which will happen next wednesday. In the last hour, I also developed a headache.

Not so long ago, this day would’ve brought me down. But not today. No, the wyldhoney has been trying to be more optimistic and upbeat in life (the "her breast is half bare" type ), and even though he didn’t do really well at first (this entire year), things are beginning to work. I am more relaxed, less irritable, and screwed bigtime for saying this out loud to the whole wide world. Ah well, a man needs a challenge.

1. I was born ass-first in the last days of 1974. According to my mother I could immediately walk, talk and train parakeets to play chess, and I was the most lovable thing ever to be born on the face of the earth. I personally regard her view on things with the greatest scepticism. As I can’t recall anything about it myself, I’ve not much more to add… moving on.

2. I got bitten in the face by a dog (a full-grown German shepherd) when I was 4 or 5 years old. The dog belonged to a friend –which was a good thing, cause it knew me! You see, we were at his place and he had to go and get something somewhere and told me to restrain the dog so it didn’t follow him. I did so, but Kim (that’s the dog) didn’t like the fact that I was holding him by the collar, jumped me and sank its teeth into my face, but without actually snapping. Nonetheless, my forehead needed stitches and I still have a scar across it to this day.

3. I hate the eighties! It was, among other things, one big fashion mistake! Take Kim Wilde: she’s a very beautiful and attractive woman, but in the eighties they fucked her up with ghastly make-up, appaling clothes and insane amounts of hairspray!! What’s worse: the same goes for a lot of men in those days! And then the music: it all seemed to be made out of plastic. Stripped of all emotion. I never noticed what a great song Fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love” was untill I heard Danny Cavanagh play it on acoustic guitar.

4. One of my major dreams was to mean something in the world of music. For many years, I tried very hard to form a band – preferably a pagan/folk/dark/doommetal band. Alas, there were two major downsides: A: I live in Belgium, which is not a nourishing environment for musicians. B: No one was interested in the whole mixing-of-genres-thing. They wanted everything to have “the same style”… bah. I should have been born in Norway. People also hugely opposed the name ‘Holothurian’. Sounds very metal, doesn’t it?

Anyway, my dream did sort of come true recently, as I was made moderator of the Aftermath-section of the Leafblade forum (Aftermath is an independent label for underground music –they have some great bands like Skumring, Poema Arcanum and The Fall Of Every Season). Go check them out: [link]

5. Another ambition I shared with a drinking buddy was to become the next Monty Python. We spend entire afternoons writing sketches that were hugely influenced by the MP-series, as well as a wide variety of Irish beverages containing alcohol. The only problem was we couldn’t write together. He would write some, and give it to me to continue, upon which I would give it back… ahh, great days!

6. I’m actually finding it very hard to list eight interesting things about myself. Let’s face it: I’m not an interesting guy. I’m boring and I’m getting old! If you want interesting, go visit ~LostintheWhirlwind -she put me up to this!

7. I don’t like make-up. In fact, it disgusts me. I never figured out what most men find so attractive about it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about moisturizing creams here, I’m saying fluorescent pink lips, orange cheeks and blue eyelids. Where’s the appeal? Do the men who like this sort of thing also drool over the clowns if they visit the circus? Do they jerk off at westerns when the Indians (Native Americans) hit the screen? Someone?

8. There is a general agreement that I am a devil worshipping drug addict. Whenever I go out, the general public gives me the “Oh noes, beware, here comes trouble”-look. When I’m pushing a pram or carrying one of the children, there are cases where people look around for the nearest policeman cause this can't possibly be right. And it’s not like I wear black all the time (I do sometimes, but even when I’m just wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt it’s like this). Nor do I starve myself to death, there were times I ate three hot meals a day and still didn’t gain weight. And then there are people telling me “I don’t know what it’s like to be discriminated” because I’m Caucasian. Yeah, right.

F) Lid of a can of corrosive I was prying open at work today. This gooey stuff hit me right in the eyes, blinding me and burning like hell. There I was, 4 metres high on a scaffold, crawling on all fours trying to find my way down. There, I was met by a collegue who took me by the hand and let me to the dressing room where I used politically incorrect amounts of water. My right eye was fine, but the left one kept burning so I got the boss to make an appointment with the eye specialist (which took a while because the ones nearest to work were all abroad for their summer vacation). Another collegue had a sandblasting grain in his eye, so he tagged along. The eye specialist complimented me on my good taste for brands (I took the can along) and fished out some more goo, which had crept way down my lower eyelid and caused the continuous burning. She also prescribed drops and an ointment. I do not have any more hindrance, and the swelling (which was huge) has already decreased, so I’ve not much fear for permanent damage.
