life update - warning - seriously boring...

people have been asking how i am, and my only response has been "busy". busy wth work, busy with school (last two weeks)

i decided on something i want to achieve in drawing in my life... i want to do three stages of jean grey. i want to properly draw, ink and digitally paint them in a poster like quality. jean grey > pheonix > black queen.
i started them, the jean grey one is almost finished being drawn, the phoenix one is half finished being drawn, the black queen one hasn't been started.
anyway, that's an aim in life, it doesn't have to be hurried.

i really hate hearing that people are too busy. like if you try and call them, and you get an sms back four days later and they say "sorry, ive been really busy". is anyone really that busy they cant pick up a phone, or is it a bad excuse used in place of "i forgot to call you four days ago and now its the only thing i can think of to say". im never that busy. -end rant

my comp seems to have gone off to a nice start, i really hope to get more then 5-6 entries. im really liking what people have come up with. i hope no one thinks that they are not good enough because its not up to how good the final picture is - its so much more. if we were only judging on the best picture - well, even i wouldnt stand a chance in any comp, we aim to judge fairly, its not just about your talent of drawing. its about costume, and transition and other things i listed and have since forgotten. -end rant

aim:
after recently discussing male and female forms we have devised an interesting competition. you will have to choose a actual or traditional male character and convert them, thier clothes, thier style (maybe even thier sidekicks/friends/parents) into a female form.

batman and robin suddenly become batwoman and roberta
KAPOW - KAZOOK - SLAP


dates and times:
start date - 1st october
cutoff date - 25th january

we will be allowing for one extra day unofficially for the time zone difference - but dont bank on that, have your entries in before then


formats:
we are very open to any media you want to use so there are no restrictions.


scoring:
you final entry will be rated and scored on the following 5 attributes

1. uniquness /10
try not to do people that have already been done like superman / supergirl
2. costume design/relevance /10
the custume wil be an integral part of the piece, nudity is allowed but some indication to who they are will be nessesary
3. transfer effect to female /10
how well you have made the character look like the original but still a female
4. artistic execution /10
how well you have rendered it. if drawn, how skillfully you drew it, if photography/cosplay, how well you have put together the costume and how well you photographed it, basically, skill and effort
5. overall design /10

this score will then be averaged out to a final mark out of 10.


determining first place:
after we have determined the top entries through scoring them, they will be announced in a journal and placed in a public poll. the control will then be over to the public.

starting to think about a comp !

anyway
i have a slight question to the artistic admirers out there. i was discussing something of more than the normal importance the other day with my housemate phil - desktop backgrounds, and we came across an interesting observation that was true for the both of us.

now, as we both noticed quite quickly, his current background is a good drawing of a sniper, we both liked it instantly. the other noticeable thing is that it's a female. now not to sound discriminatory or sexist, but both of us like the fact that it's a female sniper. it's not just with this background - a lot of the time when i see a female drawing, its ten times better then a male drawing, so it begged the question of me - are females just simply better to draw with ?

(if you can't be bothered reading all this there is a "tldr" ("too long-didn't read" version at the bottom)

now as most of you know, i mainly draw females, it's not because i think they look better (well previously, now i do), it's because i never really practised drawing male characters, i can never get the lines right. and as a weedy looking male specimen myself, i don't have many resources in the mirror (not that i'm well equipped as a female either). i can admit it - i don't have a manly macho figure, therefore any males i draw that are based on myself, wouldn't look cool at all.
when i personally draw the female figure its heaps of fun. its hard but rewarding - to get curves right, shapes round and clothing can be really detailed - if you start doing hugely detailed clothing on a male it seems he should be dancing in the street singing YMCA (sometimes its what you want). women have MORE curves, MORE lines, MORE shape. it seems a simple equation to me.

more detail = better picture

but this is not always the case - i know. but again if you reduce a picture down to basics, females still have more detail then males. here are a couple of silhouettes i prepared earlier. (don't laugh - i didn't spend that long on them)



i found some comparisons for you to ponder over (and a little history).
original batman, first appearance may 1939, created by (bob kane) - detective comics. still an iconic figure. his costume evolved over the first 6 issues of his solo title, and later changed in 1964 after DC planned to kill him off, but the story line was overhauled, also a television series came out in 1966 which increased comic sales. batman is planning to make a comeback this year being written by judd winick, while "detective comics" will be returning to BATGIRL.

batgirl was created in 1961 also by kane and a second guy, sheldon moldoff, and made regular appearances in comics from 1966-88 when she was retired. she returned briefly between 1999 and 2006 and will make a comeback this august apparently.

both heroes have almost the same costume that's dark and sharp. same ready to use utility belt and the pointed ears. great design - but which one looks cooler ?

this is not quite a rant. im hoping this is alot more productive then a rant.

if you have other problems, please let me know, ill do some research like i did with these and add to it.

PLEASE DO NOT copy / reuse / quote me on other journals / articles or anything - i dont want to get anyone in trouble, just link this journal please if you want to show people.

problem:unused accounts
there are a number of accounts that are no longer used by the people that created them. this causes a problem with people who want the names of those accounts for themselves - eg: ember.deviantart.
this also causes false statistics, for instance if someone is "watching" you, but is no longer an active member of DA, you have +1 watcher that doesnt really watch. Also the faves that person may have made are not really valid either.

The positive side is noones work is deleted / which also means no matter how long your account is unused for someone can steal your work.
Some members do have reasons for leaving DA for long periods of time, so thier accounts can eventually be occupied again when that person is ready.

FAQ #201: Do you close unused accounts, or release them to the public?

solutions
have a time limit of being inactive. It doesnt have to be 3 days inactivity - but at least some form of restriction.

When I was younger on hotmail (1999ish) if you were inactive your account was deleted. - simple google search:
"A free Hotmail account becomes inactive if you do not sign in for 30 days, or within the first 10 days after signing up for an account. Once an account becomes inactive, all messages, folders, and contacts are deleted, but the account name is still reserved. If the account stays inactive for a further 90 days, it is permanently deleted."

have you ever tried to explain a colour without showing it. for instance, trying to describe blue to someone who was born blind, i would say, blue is cool, calming, like water (just a short description there jessi had really really good ones, so if you need a hand talk to her hahaha...)

its not as easy as it ... well... looks. trying to describe a colour to someone that doesnt know what it looks like.

i would like to do a visual experiment.

objective: ONLY using black and white, draw a colour.

This will be an interesting thing to do for me and will also see how well you personally represented your colour. I will put up the results for you guys to see.

a lot of people have a problem with being judged ?
i have been told by people that they were judged, or that someone was judged, i have even been told that i have been judging them. i don't think i ever judge anyone on purpose, i wouldn't know how to, but now reading the definition above (to form an opinion) i do it all the time. i judge things constantly. i have opinions, and i independently think for myself about things that happen around me. i don't live in some black bubble where my mind is closed off from the rest of the world so as to not offend someone. do you think you judge people ? do you form opinions of someone / something ? can you really believe you live your life without forming an opinion about someone.

i form opinions.
i assess people.
i make mental judgments.
i make estimations about numerous things.
i think about things until my head crumbles on itself with too many thought and questions.

i can only assume i have been judged at some point in time. i know lots of people have opinions of me. whether those opinions are good or bad, i will accept them. i portray my existence the way i like it to be seen, the way i like to be heard and the way i want people to think of me. some people hate me, some people love me, some people don't care. positive comments on my character are flattering of course, and negative ones cause an effect, but in the end, do i care about being judged ?

honestly. i take what people say. i accept peoples opinions. why should i care about being judged. i cant see the big deal. someone thinks something - that's not uncommon, someone thinks something about you - that's bound to happen, someone will form an opinion that they may or may not tell you - big deal, how can you stop this ?

if its good or bad, your being judged constantly. you cant stop it, it happens. i don't let it run my life, i don't care what people think... they are going to keep thinking it anyway unless you change. some judgements may make me change something if they are voiced, some will be ignored if i think they are stupid, some will make me laugh, but deep down - none of it will effect me unless i WANT it to.

a question of vanity has recently entered my mind after a discussion with my close friend jamie on my trip in new zealand.

questions in my head :-
a> what are you doing in order to be classed as a vain person?
-what are traits a vain person has ?
b> is there different degree's in vanity or is it black and white?
c> are you vain for liking good clothes / looking good in clothes ?

im not someone that spends more then $100 on clothing, in fact, I would hardly pay more then $50 for clothing (disregarding specialty clothing -eg. ski pants, snow jacket). Some people spend amazing amounts of money, on shoes, jackets, jeans even ! I cant tell the difference between a $100 pair of jeans and my $20 pair, in fact I love my $20 pair. That being said, a few months ago I spent $100+ on a jumper that was a bargain (compared to store prices) on ebay. this was brought up while discussing clothing and vanity. How much do I have to spend on clothing that I think looks good on me to become a vain person ? If half of your clothing is worth more then a certain amount, does that make you
vain ?

as the question came up i had to stop and think... why do i buy the clothes i buy, in fact why do i buy clothes at all. You see, my friend jamie, doesn't ever buy clothes, doesn't ever care about the way he looks. I respect him for that, its not something I can do (insert vanity question here too). He wears anything he finds, in his room, lounge room, brothers room, he never buys clothes - other things are more important to him to spend money on. Its not that i put a high value on clothing, but if I see a really cool jumper, and its only $20, ill buy it.
Does buying something that I think will look good making me vain ?
Should that $20, although within my rights to spend on whatever I want, be spent on something for my girlfriend, something for my house, petrol ?
if every second week i alternatively buy something for me then something for someone else does that make me less vain ?

d:
i earn money, i spend money. each week consists of living costs -food, petrol, rent etc. Not every week consists of spending money on things I like. I often pick something up and say, this is really great - but I don't need it.
does anyone have a suggestion of the percentages of earnings you should be spending on you / spending on others / saving / living costs ?

Everyone should have a dream, a hope, an aspiration, something they just have to do before thier time comes. When I was three, and a long time after all I wanted was a Jeep. The car. I still have my toy jeep. Bright green, no roof, big tough roll bars, bull bar. Last year I finally bought one. It feels so good to have gotten that one thing I had always dreamed about. I know it seems small, it is JUST a car. Its not the only dream I have had. I have a few others, but some are best kept to myself.

Does anyone think, that with all the medical marvels and advanced scientific methods that are going around at the moment and will be advancing more into the future - its delaying the inevitable. Its almost torture for the elderly ?

I have known for a long time, doctors and almost all science breakthroughs are all postponing death. They will make you live longer, make your life longer then your NATURAL time. Is this necessarily a good thing ? Is this still human ?

I understand its fantastic for those that are just starting out life. I do understand that...

But is the Hippocratic oath a hypocrisy ? Making people live longer when they are older can be torture, but they are not allowed to let them die. They have to obey the Hippocratic oath. And postpone the eventual and definite end.

Am I crazy ?
Science + human life = what ? - is it still human ?
Suicide is horrible, but should it be a choice for people who have lived their time ?

Age decays us all... Science can only prevent so much. When I am an old person, should I live while arthritis threatens my fingers so I cant draw / type / hold things. My body shakes so I can’t walk properly. My eyes become so dull and blurred I can’t read or even recognise grandchildren. My ears gone partially / mostly deaf so answering all the people speaking to me with a yes or a nod, not knowing what they are saying, embarrassing myself answering "yes" when it should be a "no". Not being able to appreciate music.

Is this life ?

It seems to me if I was in this state, I wouldn’t be thanking the doctors for making sure I stayed alive for another three months. I would be an aged puppet. Not able to do anything, sitting in my chair. Waiting... waiting....

Morbid I know.

1: Please answer all of my questions as well as you can
(and please don't get annoyed at any of them)

a - Do you already have a tattoo, can I have a photo of it ?
(why: I would like to know what style you like, seeing
an already done tattoo helps me determine the style
in which I draw)

b - Size its going to be on your skin...
(why: this will determine the level of detail and the size
and thickness of the lines within the tattoo)

c - Colours ?
(why: If i need to do it in colours its helpful to know)

2: I am always interested in what the tattoo means !!! Tell me please !!

3: Make sure when you get it done no matter where it is I get a photo of it
(this is to go into my folio, and I don't want a crap photo, also
