Yesterday was the last day of the 2007 Thoroughbred meet at Colonial Downs, and my last day there was Sunday. I watched some morning works, stopped in to see the horses one last time, and then went to the races. Fancy Footsteps, a darling little filly from the barn, broke her maiden. =] I was so proud of her!
Now, for a few things...
If anyone wants to do an internship at Colonial Downs (in Virginia) next summer, let me know. They're trying to get more people involved with it. Make money while working with racehorses! What could be a better summer job than that?
Colonial Downs began it's meet yesterday, and I went up there today for the Colonial Turf Cup. It was great, of course. There weren't any dirt races on the card so I didn't get to use my 300mm lens to it's full potential, but it was still good. I'm in love with my lens. I think I got some really nice shots on top of seeing some really nice horses and jockeys.
Jungle Fighter and Horacio Karamanos won the Old Nelson Handicap.
Silver Charades and Jose Valdivia, Jr. came out on top in the All Along Breeders' Cup Stakes.
And Summer Doldrums and Jose Lezcano took the Colonial Turf Cup by a head.
I'm not quite sure what to say...
Racing fans know what we're all going through tonight. Maybe others won't understand. We can prepare ourselves for it every time. The breakdowns. The viruses. Flipping in the paddock. But it always hurts like hell when it happens.

Lost In The Fog. What a warrior. He had his doubters, but I never doubted him. I went to the 2005 Breeder's Cup at Belmont Park knowing full well the type of horse I was going to see -- the champion. I sat in the stands and froze in the weather, watching race after race. Every horse there was amazing, and I was looking forward to watching some of my favorites run. And while Lost In The Fog wasn't one of my top favorites, he commanded that track when he walked by in the post parade. I won't forget it -- watching him from the grandstand in awe. Glancing back and forth from the battle on the backstretch directly across from me to the screen in the infield with an up-close view. I got chills when Tom Durkin mentioned his named, the words ringing over Belmont Park. Those orange silks and crooked blaze looming large, waiting to pounce. And when I saw the undefeated sprinter rounding that turn at Belmont Park, my heart jumped for joy. "And as they enter the stretch, it's the undefeated Lost In The Fog in front..." Attila's Storm on the inside -- I knew he'd be a tough match as they battled down the stretch. But I thought The Fog had it. He's the type of horse that you know can win a head to head battle out of sheer heart and grit. And then out of the corner of my eye came Silver Train and, with him, a wave of challengers to overtake a tired Lost In The Fog. My heart sank at that moment. The race was over. He lost. But it didn't matter. It happens all the time -- maybe not to him, as he was defeated for the first time -- but it happens. You come back another day and you try again. Sometimes it happens on the worst possible day -- the day when you're trying to show up those doubters. But it happens, and it's okay. As long as he was safe. They all finished the race in one piece. Wildcat Heir stumbled and flipped galloping out, but he was okay. And despite Lost In The Fog's loss, he was crowned Champion Sprinter of 2005. He deserved it. No other horse pounded the sprint races like he did.

But now it's over.
After months of crying and worrying over Barbaro, we got the news -- "Mass in Lost In The Fog believed to be cancer." And today the news came that not only did he have one cancerous mass, but three. His chances didn't look good from the beginning -- a canteloupe-sized tumor on his spleen, which required the uncommon removal of his spleen. But today sealed his definite fate. An egg-sized tumor. Two canteloupe-sized tumors. All in bad places -- the membrane that suspends the spleen, the spleen itself, and beneath his spine, close to the body wall.

He'll be heading back to Golden Gate Fields, the track that he undoubtedly owned. And he'll be kept there comfortably and happily for as long as his body allows -- an estimated two weeks. And then he'll be let go peacefully, his body cremated and returned to Southern Chase Farm, the farm where he was raised.

Bless Greg Gilchrist, Harry Aleo, his grooms...They now have to say goodbye to their beloved friend. Passing his stall everyday as they go about their chores, knowing that every day is a special one for Lost In The Fog, and not to be taken for granted.

And bless Lost In The Fog. The champion. The warrior. The horse who took us all for a ride we won't soon forget.

Goodbye, Lost In The Fog, and thanks for the ride.
Thanks for the ride.
Colonial Downs -- its 10th anniversary.

I wanted to see Charismatic Caller today and go on the backside to visit him after his race, but I talked to his [really nice] trainer and he was scratched because of an abscess and left this morning [since the Colonial meet ends in a week]. Ah well. Would've been nice to have seen him after all these years -- I last saw him at Laurel when he was a two year old, and he's five now. His trainer told me to e-mail him and he'd send me some photos of him.

Kyle Kaenel didn't win any races today, but his aunt Jill won her first. Kyle finished second in the race, too, so it was a happy winner's circle with lots of hugs going around.
Live the dream.

Which reminds me...
I forgot to talk to Kyle Kaenel and Hamilton Smith, too. Bah!

I still don't have my 100-300mm lens that I ordered [they haven't even received it from the manufacturer yet] so I just had my short lens.
I'll be posting some of my photos from the track either tonight or tomorrow.
