So I think I'm willing to take prop commissions. In particular I do woodworking. I can do some metal work but I'm really not equipped for much more than welding and my drill press needs new drill bits.
If you want something made send me a note on DA or an email with a reference picture. DO NOT send me low resolution pictures, those just cause problems and delays.

I'm working on some super secret projects and trying to get this chapter of Bluesky finished up for a release. I will be looking for a programmer who can do C# (preferably for XNA) and or Construct ([link]) & Python. I have two adventure platformers I want to prototype and I can do it on my own with Construct but I would like to have a programmer to focus on that while I do everything else.

[link]

I've decided to update the d-pad blog instead of DA because then I can say what I want and not worry about site admins.
I decided to write about The joys of playing Beyond Good & Evil, character inspiration from nature shows and review an awful movie, Eden Lake. Go read it now and post some angry response because I make no sense!

[link]

No art will be uploaded for a while. I've been spending my time writing this graphic novel, Bluesky. I've mentioned in D-pad blog about how much is done and where it is kind of going, but recently I have been focusing on planning the exact details for every chapter. I have about 30-40 in detail and another 20 in a kind of general outline. I know where and how it ends but I have a section before that where I would like to expand. The first part is at most 70 chapters, I don't think it should go any longer unless I really find something interesting to add. I have been working on several different ways to transition the two parts and really give a solid foundation for the latter. I'll continue to refine different ideas until I find the right match.

The rest (possibly in the hundreds) are older drafts I will revise when I get to them but I had about 30 or more (from part 2) so in a fairly thick synopsis. I really don't know how many I have done for the second part because I was just writing everything down as it should happen with no indication of where it would cut. I have long stretches full of content and then there are gaps. Thinking now about them there are some silly ideas that will get removed or reworked, but that's all apart of writing xD.

The reason why I've left the second half alone for so long is because it served as a way for me to prototype the world. It felt derivative and not entirely my own but was in the right direction. I feel like I have too many over the top moments that become big lipped alligators and it causes major power balance issues, it wrecks havoc on the setting and structure of everything and leads to these moments of "well he just did that thing, why can't he do this!". It's kind of like in Dragon Ball Z where they just keep pushing it until we can no longer comprehend limits and tension/ drama is entirely lost.

I then decided that I had all of this history and major characters living it out so I stepped back and began again with an older character at a young age (Nadia). Doing this also gave more authenticity and life to the story. It let me focus on aspects I had skipped and everyone gained a proper context. I liked this approach because so far and it has really given me the time to mature my story telling style. I think this has given me a much better plan for such a long story and because of it I have a place where characters belong.

You only get better by doing and for me this has been about starting from scratch and recycling what works.

its awwwwright. Schools almost done, brain has pop'd starting to play with inking. I'll upload a random page when it's done. I think ive got it down, but goddamn this paper takes a long time to dry. I need a heat lamp or something. the hair drier i stolez wuz confiscated by the 5-O. I think i'm getting the hang of story telling in panels but Ive overemphasized a few things (thanks Imson) and they work against my intentions. My inking is getting much better with practise and my pencils are getting more detailed. I find that when i scan through my reference art I don't copy anything directly but it makes something click and the finer details of the scenery come together.

on a side note, don't watch Ping Pong Club or South Park while inking, it fucks your lines up, lollerskates.

[link]

Some nice philosophy to live by.
Oh fuck, I hate this feeling of not being inspired. Why hell just a few weeks ago I was filling at least 6 sketchbook pages full of original content for the lulz. All that just got up and lost in the wind like a fart. I started doodling again, just people stuff.
Ive been wondering about motivation/ inspiration and that its always good to kinda keep trying new content and see where it goes for the sake of learning something, but sometimes u just get so swamped with garbage that means nothing personally. For me the idea of really wanting to do something with art came from watching movies/ playing games. Ive conducted an experiment over the last couple years ( partly knowing it myself, just seeing where it goes and not expecting an answer ) to kind of pick at the brains of the people I look up to. I have to admit I already share a great deal of the Buronson generation's source material because I was a mid-late 80s kid. Being born in 85 and having an older brother whose been around for 4 years prior gives you a crap load of culture to just kinda always be exposed to even if you never found it yourself. Star Wars, Star Trek, Poltergeist, Godzilla, Ghostbusters, Hell Raiser, Freddy Kreuger, Jason Vorhese, Muppets, Mad Max, Dracula, Frankenstein, Terminator, Robocop, Evil Dead, Bruce Lee, Conan, Rambo, Shirlock Holmes, to name a few. I didn't grow up with things like Fist of the North Star directly, I did have my run ins with the series around 1996-1997 with a buddy of mine telling me (over mIRC) aboutthis awesome show exploding people with just one finger, but alas it was nearly impossible to get anime that gory or obscure in much more than a few screens or preview clips in Real Media format (fuck you Geocities and Angelfire). I did however know that this game called 'Black Belt' for my Sega Master System apparently had a craazzy different title screen and name in Japan but I couldn't read 'Hokuto no Ken' at the time so I ignored the connection but still remembered the scary face of Ken and lightning bolts. That shits just funny how it goes full circle and I ended up rediscovering it sometime around 2003-2005, I love digging into the culture I might have only brushed once or twice to see what I was missing. Maybe I ignored said culture because I didn't like it at that age or was mislead by shitty advertisements.

I guess what I'm getting at is I waste a lot of time looking up old movies/ music/ books that range from the 70s to present day and I do have a sense of taste but I'm willing to cast off any feeling of it being too retro or too niche or whatever. I think thats the sociology fascination talking when I say I like to emulate the context in my mind. Anyway, aside from tracking down my own history, I like to know what my favourite authors were up to in their boring college days. Maybe its the need to identify with a group. Something I've wrestled with in my mind has been the idea that I'm trying indirect recommendations by published creators to find the inspiration they found or to find what I need or what it gives me. I think what it is is that I WANT to feel what others experience in some kind of empathy exercise but in reality I can only tap into so much even if i try to just go with the flow and enjoy it as a ride or let it really punch my soul around. I always find something to take away from most media, be it a cool device or ugly taboo, but more and more I get this feeling that I'm wasting my time and not gaining as much as I used to.

I never want to become that old codger who refuses to pickup new things but I can't but help feel that I'm becoming less interested in holding onto new movies etc.. unless they really tickle my childhood. I absolutely loved the new Beowulf movie, even if it fell short in a couple places, the ride was intense, Beowulf reached back and stole a place along side all the adventure heroes as if I were watching it back in the day.

I'm thinking about this because while in my funk of what to sketch I loaded up Patlabor movie 1 and it put me in a happy place that wasn't so much nostalgia like I expected but it put me back in the seat of the kid who dodged parents to stay up till 1am just to watch Ninja Scroll or who rented every goddamn copy of Slayers , Ping Pong Club, and Project A-Ko, he could get at the video store on discount Tuesdays. That kid didn't just want to sit back and watch movies and play video games, that kid wanted to and was already working vigorously to make something out of all this incoming traffic.

Alright so I've been trying to get my ass in gear for steady working hours. This weekend I've finished 1 page and penciled 3 drafts. I'm gonna try to get 2 more done up by wed or Thursday. Hopefully when I'm done all 20 pages I can go back and fix up my drawings. I have had an annoying problem with not tightening up my lines. So far its coming along pretty well.

Also, here be a few pattern packs I whipped up for myself.
[link]

I'm gonna try to get some other texture packs. This one includes:
9 screen tones from 10-90% black
11 cross hatch textures from white to black
11 static/ noise fuzz textures from white to black

I included white and black to breakup the artificial look of big fills in places. These have been useful for my test pages, Someone else might benefit from them.

Alright children, lets sing a song, a song about being happy.
Why I'll teach you to be happy,
I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs!

So I’ve gone through stacks of different papers and sheets and crap all in a search of what works best for me. I’ve by mistake found things that should be avoided and things that could be useful elsewhere. Opus, you have my credit card on the wall somewhere I'm sure. Also, tips on doing a better scan.

Paper!

Canson - Drawing - 70lb / 80lb (blue books)
A gold balloon on the cover. This paper is probably the best sketching paper I've used. It takes abuse like women in the 50s. Pencil lines are easy to remove without ruining the paper. Sheets pickup pencil led quickly without needing much pressure nor do they grind the sticks down. Paper is easily/ cleanly detached. The booklet has a flimsy back so its shithouse for anything but a desk. They suck for clean inks because it just bleeds and bleeds. Another downside is its kind of pricey, 50 sheets of 9x12 for about 6-7$

Opus Essential
Shit shit shit shit shit shit shit *breath in* shit shit shit shit
We all buy this crap because it’s cheaper than water but it takes nothing to wreck it.

Strathmore - Bristol - Smooth - 400 series
Hard sheets of super smooth cardboard. pens/ pencils just glide across this stuff and its very easy to erase. very nice stuff for final copies that must be flat and free of wrinkles. These papers hate metal nibs, anything sharp just goes right in but not through, super fine nibs get caught constantly and need cotton fibres pulled out regularly. I find that when the surface gets wet its very easy to start pulling the smooth layer off. Highlighters and lots of ink + eraser = RIP AND TEAR. The sheets are glued in so it takes a slight bend and ruler/ knife to release them. Discard their spines like so many babies! I love this paper for the rigid quality and the fact that it doesn't bleed. ink is very controlled, but tech pens (microns, liners, radiographs) either don't have the right kind of ink in them or they don't scratch into the page so they easily fade with erasers. This shit is expensive, Son! 8$ for 20x 9x12 and 12$ 20x 11x14, use for finished final concluded pictures only.

Canson - Calque - Tracing - 25lb
Bad, this is the opus essential of tracing paper. It wrinkles into tiny folds if you even think about looking at it. apply ink and its done for, apply pencils and its still done for, get yourself a light box and xerox paper because this is a waste.

Vellum - semi transparent - heavy / thick sheets -
40c a sheet - bulk drawers
Decent stuff, it has a bit too harsh a surface for nibs, the fine nibs will catch easily. Ink stays controlled and clean despite the bumps; this paper is more for tech pens than dipping pens. Since its thicker its rigid and only slightly wrinkles, not much but in very intense spots with lots of ink it will pickup a red/ blue glossy highlight that needs retooling on the computer. Also, because of the thickness it casts shadows on the lid of the scanner, this can be fixed but its still a pain and needs a hand touch in tight detailed spaces. This paper is very hard to smudge and ink doesn't move much. little to no paper is picked up with metal nibs

Graphix Drafting - Semi transparent - hard white - thin
60c a sheet - bulk drawers
This stuff is like vellum, but with a finish smoother than bristol. its a very plastic feel. Sheets are fairly solid. The paper is a solid white so there’s less paper noise to cleanup. Ink will wrinkle this paper but only in small amounts with heavy coats. The ink will NOT dry quickly; this paper is to be left somewhere clean and out of disturbance for at least bedtime or a day out of the house. The ink will be bold and thick but it just sits on top. Very easy to smudge this stuff but also easy to clean. This paper chews up HB led oh so bad, you can draw a line and maybe chew up all you've got pushed out. Excellent for artsy organic ink work but its a real bitch to work with if you screw up, there is no hand on a paper to keep it from smudging there is only a perfectly controlled floating hand. Picks up little to no junk in the nib.

PEn!s

Gelly Roll Med - white pen
More precise than whiteout and doesn't form a nasty crust cake on the page. It does however smudge most ink so what you end up with can be a pool of grey swirls. They aren't too expensive, much more than whiteout, like 2$ a pen I think, but the trade off is you can’t take whiteout into tiny spaces without redrawing ugly lines. This has its uses but I think being more experienced with ink is better than wasting time on correction tools

Staedtler - Pigment Liner 0.1mm
Got it at staples, it’s thinner than the Microns but at the cost of solid lines and eras-ability. I use it for tiny spaces only.
<br...
