In the year 1758, during the French & Indian War, a French fort at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela & Ohio Rivers called Fort Dusquesne (Do-Kane) is captured by the British and renamed Fort Pitt.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Duquesne

Four years earlier, a young British Army officer from Virginia named George Washington had nearly drown while crossing the Allegheny River near present day Lawrenceville at 40th Street. Making the best of a bad situation, I decided to park up in the "Strip District" behind the old Pennsylvania Railroad Fruit & Produce terminal. The Terminal is still a very active place, but no longer serviced by rail. The parking lot I parked in for $4.00 was actually part of the PRR Produce Terminal yard at 16th Street. There are many remnants of the yard and you can visualize what it must have been like back in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. After parking the Jeep, I headed over to Liberty Avenue, passing Wholey's Fish Market, a massive Cold storage structure and a popul </media:text>

Penn Station in it's glory days was a transportation palace, with named trains like the Broadway Limited arriving along with lesser named trains and commuter trains. It was a busy place and the main hub and porthole into the city. Those days are gone. Penn Station is now luxury apartments and office space. The Pennsylvania Railroad is only a memory to a few. Rail travel is no longer a first class means of transportation. The Amtrak station attached to the back of the old station is a grim substitute f </media:text>

Pittsburgh being a massive melting pot of nationalities has developed a dialect all it own. It's kind of fun to listen to, but even for a native like myself it's sometimes hard to understand. For example, I lived in a neighborhood called East Liberty, in Pittsburghese, it sounds like "Sliberty". Even the local football team has become the victim of Pittsburghese, the Steelers end up sounding like "Stillers". My own name, Don in Pittburghese sounds "Daawn".

What got me thinking about this was an ar </media:text>
