I won the last one, and decided to feature the winner of this one in my journal.

The contest theme was:
Old and Young

With this shot:

I wish to discuss this image - why it is a winner and what could be improved. Some issues are technical, and could easily be applied to other images.

First and foremost comes the subject - kids are always good subjects because of their inherent "cuteness", but here, true to the contest theme, there is also an adult. The interaction between them and the eye contact are very important to the success of the image - they establish the theme as the interaction between them "Father and Child" rather then two portraits. The complete scene is enhanced by the look on the father's face - giving it a comic side.

So far - I covered the basic subject matter, now lets have a look at composition: Apart from the two of them there is very little else to distract the observer, and a few elements that add to the composition.
The frame of a 35mm meg comes close to the "Golden Section" (about 1.618:1). When you take away a square out of a golden rectangle, you get another rectangle with the same proportions - this has been used extensively in art and design. Here you can see the square as the brick wall framing the father, while the door (the other golden rectangle) frames the child. This compositions is, therefore, harmonious and very pleasing to watch. While the two subjects are each individually framed, the eye contact connects them, and the intercom box between them makes an isosceles triangle that helps balance the composition without distracting (remove it and the top part above the father's head may seem empty. The final compositional element that makes this image feel so right is the location of the child - for some reason, when our eye wonders around an image, the natural resting place is the bottom part of the left side. In this image, the child is the main subject, with the father being secondary (but also important) - again, adding to the perfect composition.

Overall the subject matter is great, portraying child and parent in a humorous way and perfect composition.

Is the image perfect? No, there are minor points that could be improved:
Perspective - In an image where the door is so close to the left end of the frame it would have been much better to have the wall perfectly parallel. To achieve that the camera must be perfectly parallel to the wall and not tilted up (as here) or down. The other option is correcting in PS - acceptable without making it a manipulation. The other aspect is very hard to judge on a screen, as calibration may be the source, but to me it seems to lack some contrast - changing the curve (PS curves) to make it shallower at the top and bottom (keeping highlight and shadow detail) and making it steeper at the midsection (enhancing mid-range contrast) could improve. No screen or scan could ever match a good silver print - and unfortunately disappearing breed.

I think I have rambled enough about this superb winner - I just want to leave you with a few more images from *senicar's excellent gallery:

I rarely feature a DD, as it has already received enough exposure, and judging by the soon to reach 35,000 views, you have probably seen this one; however, I wanted to use it to explain some issues that are interesting about visual processing in our minds, and why this composition is so perfect, because good composition is independent from subject matter!

Have a look at:

(I recommend opening another window or tab)

When we look at an image, we screen it, and our mind anchors on points of interest, but for some obscure reason, there is a "comfort zone" near the intersection of the thirds at the bottom left. when a point of interest lies there, the image "feels" solid and balanced.
In this image, this point is occupied by the base of the tree's trunk - a solid object in itself. Then there is the left major branch, dark and solid, curving left and then back towards the top center of the frame, framing the image and keeping our gaze from wondering away. The other major branch is lighter, and as it goes up directly through the center of the image serves as a frame within a frame directing us to "the main event" - the little pond at the back - and island of green surrounded by the exquisite red foliage. This forms and ellipse - another very stable form - at the bottom third at the center of the image. On the other side of that ellipse there is a green bush, making the image asymmetrical, yet balanced. Because it is asymmetrical it is dynamic (the diagonal branches add to that too), adding interest to the composition! Three minor branches slanting to the right from the top complete the "frame", directing us back to the ellipse stopping us from wondering to the top right. Further right, the bottom part is occupied by more green bushes, but as these are very homogeneous, they do not attract attention, and complete the framing on this side. To the left of the main trunk, the is another green bush, which miraculously has a branch that is almost a perfect radius to the curve of the main left branch, adding to the balance and comfort of the composition and keeping us from straying left if we managed to look past the trunk! Finally, the leaf covered moss at the bottom frames the bottom of the frame, avoiding a sharp division into red top / green bottom, and again balancing and leading us towards the central ellipse.

Overall this image lets us wonder through it, inviting exploration of all corners while always leading us back to the center - a masterpiece of composition, worthy of an honored place in any composition class - and any wall!

Now, you may think that the magnificent colors (and they are truly magnificent!) are what makes this image work, but I say no! Don't take my word for it, though - see for yourself: =failingjune, the author of this DD-worthy image, has taken another one of the same tree, at the same time, presented as Eden II - but here the composition makes us rest on the trunk, symmetrical, and while we enjoy the colors, we loose the dynamic wondering through the image that this composition offers!

PS I also think it works well with the colors of my CSS =D

Rant:
V6 somehow put me off dA. I don't know why - it looks great, but somehow less functional. Maybe I'm just too old... I just think I would like it to be less "skin" and more body and soul...
PS - I miss the deviation counter - I would like one for each category.

About creative photography...
Many people submit deviations, but I feel that whereas in traditional art, literature etc. the submissions are art, in photography a lot is mundane, snappy with no artistic aspirations whatsoever. Somewhat complementary to the dB (Deviant Blog) that many journals have turned into. I put that part first, but from now on I will continue with a feature of some photographs here that require nothing but basic photographic tools - and creativity:

Tina has captured an interesting subject. Using basic creative tools such as crop, selective focus and framing (see the blades of grass and the spots of light...), she turned it into a stature, an iceberg - a form that excites my imagination... (I ordered the print)


Fast action and slow shutterspeed - a great dynamic composition, leaving nothing but the bare essential conveying the theme of flight and freedom...


Anyone can change what they see and create the image in front of the camera. You don't need elaborate tools and light to make a still life that touches!
Good idea and careful placement creating a great conceptual image!


Juxtaposition is another surprising creative tool - thinking before taking the camera out of the bag, planning, will reward you!


The magnificent Aurora Borealis - with just a little extra to make it personal, and more interesting!

Ages ago I made a photographic series after the subject of Genesis.

I started with a trial, using a floodlight and 120 64T (tungsten balanced) negative film on a Bronica ETRS camera. My first DD At the End of The Fourth Day is from that roll (15 photos in all).

They are the community I live in.

This summer we are staging a full production of "Fiddler on the Roof" - a 1965 play and 1971 film, based a story set in 1905 Jewish-Russian town Anatevka, part of Tsarist Russia.

All actors, director, dancers, singers, prop artists, costume makers, stage designer and everything you may need for such a production (except for sound and light technicians) are from the kibbutz, 130 people in all take part.

I sing (I could have danced, but I broke a toe when the rehearsals started...).

Yesterday, though, instead of sitting with the choir (an hour and 45 minutes on the stage) I asked the director to be let off and took pictures at the first fully dressed, full makeup rehearsal. I managed to go through three rolls of film, which I sent to be developed. I'll probably post some, but if I have enough patience, I'll set up a slide show or upload them somewhere.

I have been part of the rehearsals (the actors have been at it for about 5 months!) and I enjoy the show every time. All amateurs, but the acting quality is great.

Show for guests is on Thursday - 9/Aug
Show for the community (the few that aren't participating...) - 10/Aug

…and that's it!!!
No road tour, no more shows - just photographs and memories.

I wanted to have a new feature, but I'm just too damn tired - the kids are on holiday, and they're driving me nuts...

So I thought, as I have recently won some subscriptions, that the person that will nail my 10,000 PV will get a three months subscription.

First - give me a little hand if you will, and vote for ArchiTexture on JPG magazine.

I had a hectic week - my oldest son broke his arm last week, when someone kicked a ball (playing what is known throughout the world as football, except for in the USA, where its called soccer :)) from close range.

On Sunday he broke his cast, and we made the trip to the ER to change it.

Monday was boring.

On Tuesday another son kicked another guy (playing the same game...) and another trip to the ER told us no bones were broken.

On Wednesday, we went back to hospital with the oldest, this time to change his cast to alighter, plastic one, so he could take the trip to the water park with us tommorow. Our little daughter joined us - she woke up with both eyes swolen... The eye doctor said it may be a problem with some narrow channels and gave us a rerscription for an ointment and cleaning wipes.

Back home.

She took a nap and her eyes were even more swolen. We thought about going back to the ER, but decided to wait until morning.
The boys (12, 9,9) wanted to play foorball (soccer?). I did. I kicked Alon (with the cast) and felt a sharp pain in my toe.
That was yesterday.

This morning Topaz, the little one woke up with her eyes much better.
I went to the ER by myself.
Broken toe...

My wife has been on antibiotics all week for her throat and wheeziness.

Tommorow we all go to the waterpark.

Saturday we may rest...

Entered in :icondskphotography:'s Night shot contest.

My photo Architexture was selected for an exhibition marking the openning of "The Gallery for Traditional Photography" at Bat Yam Museum in Israel. I had to crop it on both sides to make it fit their stringent 20X30 cm sides. This is the reason I am not displaying a still life there...:? The Exhibition opens on May 29th for a month - fellow Israelis and anyone - invited!

My image Plastic Duo has won second place and $50 at the New York Institute of Photography's Close up contest (I took their correspondense course, starting in 1988 and finishing at 1992 - learned a lot!). The exhibition ended last year - I wonder if I'll ever see that prize :)

was submitted to the Picture.com site, where they say you could win up to $10,000. They said it was selected for a book. It turns out all or most of the entrys are "selected" for those books, and people wait ages for them to arrive (they have 3-4 titles and print them regularly with different photos each time. Some people have won money there - so its not a complete scam...

As I told you - I finished this journal last week, only to have it disapear, so here I am again, presenting:

I don't remember how I first met Shari here on dA, but since then I have enjoyed many thoughtful comments and features, as well as some conversations about lighter and heavier subjects. Shari is here for the art and the people, but also to spread the word about thing that should be important to all of us, such as the world we live in people and things that should be remembered, and simple things of everyday life.

I picked a few images from her diverse gallery, and I'll tell you why:

February Self Portrait

I thought a self portrait should be first - Cropped perfectly it has a warm, yet slightly mysterious feeling. The great use of light, the focus on the eye make it a great portrait, as well as a window into her world.

She Used To Dance

The image, along with the title, tell a story many are familiar with, and does it well. We move on, keeping our nostalgic memories. The choice of elements is very percise, and the tricky exposure handled perfectly, with some post processing to accent the nostalgic feeling.
I love it!

Christmas in the Joker's Lair

Bars are usually full of people - where have they all gone???
The tilt adds to the mystery, creating a most dynamic image, with the warmth of the ambient light completeing a strange setting that gives me a "Twilight Zone" feeling...
The near highlight is anti-composition rules - and it works well here - maybe a gate to another dimension, where everyone has dissapeared to?
Great colors and composition show part of Shari's diversity!

Awaiting Diners...

Not one complete chair or table - but composition is perfect again! Notice the wooden panel at the top left, "closing" the image, and adding a warm shade to make the place less alienated.

From Behind the Curtains

Maybe simple, but very sensitive!
Look at the shading on the left "curtain", grains of pollen and some less then perfect flowers - because nobody is perfect when we look close enough. The format also suggests a crop, revealing more thought, even for a simple subject.

Simple shot, simples words - penetrating deep...
No explanation required...Its all there already...

My still life
Today I have shot my first studio still life in over five years :party:- all the ones I posted until now were shot between 1994 and 2002. As it turns out, it seems that I can still load a 4X5 cassette, meter exposure and focus on the matt screen (under the black cloth...) - all things you must do when shooting large format.
The image I made has been temporarily named Twilight and will probably be my entry to the contest. I started it a few weeks ago, but it has changed as the time passed.

Thanks you Tina for extending the deadline - I hope I get the 4X5 developed by then...

I'm back - Des Moines was unbearably cold - day time highs below 0F - and for me 10C is cold...
Had a great trip from the business point of view (R&D work) and some excellent shopping (nothing to do with photography). I also took some snow shots, they will probably pop up in my scraps, unless they are absolutly stunning (that's where all my scraps, as well as thing I don't want in my gallery go...

Today I spent all morning cleaning up the room I call my studio, where I have created some of my still life images, but used as storage for the last few years.

I set up some stuff, but had no time for lights and film - so it will wait, because tomorrow night I am flying off to the US - from 17C to 17F degrees :( - I hope I don't freeze...Probably :snowing: too...

I'll be away for Valentine's day - so I went to the florist and they will hand my wife a big boquette with a note I wrote on Wednesday. I'll be home on Thursday after 110 hours, five flights and two meetings...

When I return I hope to take my first 4X5 still life in about 5 years!!! :w00t:

Lets look at some of her images:

LaDue

Full view is a must to enjoy the subtle interactions of colors and shapes.
A few things that made me like it:
1. I like those weird colors.
2. The shape of the land between water and sky reminds me of a chromosome (I know that's weird...).
3. That plant thing on the left has one stalk with the head right against the sun's reflection - I think it differentiates this image from others similar!
4. The clouds are sort of weird and ominous - especially combined with the color.
5. The longish entity on the far right looks like an almost obscured sentinel to the scene.
Overall I find it surreal, without having anything extraordinary but the colors!

Solitude

The image speaks for itself - I was imediatly drawn to it, because I have a very different image by the same name, with a simmilar theme...
I love the color and the frame - including the trees at the back that emphasize the lone tree at the fron -all by itself, aspiring to reach the foreboding sky!

Spread a Little Love

This one is here for a few reasons - Its is simple and well composed, and Tina puts her :heart: where her mouth is! Spreading her love around dA - and I'm sure elswhere too!
It is also here, because there are too many people on dA (even if a negligible minority!) that have a heart of stone, causing grief and irritation to kind people who, like Tina, who set out with only good intentions, and get hurt!

Confession - I shot 500 people!!!

Lets start at the begining, shall we?:

Almost 10 years ago I made a group shot of people from my kibbutz (population 890) - about 450 of them showed up. Shot on 4X5 negative, and enlarged to 2X2.5 meters, the photo still hangs at the dining room entrance (I will not get into Kibbutz - the link will take you to Wikipedia where there's a lot of material).

This year, marking 85 years for my kibbutz, Mishmar HaEmek, we have decided to repeat the shoot to make another enlargment and also include in a book. It turned out the original location has been overgrown with plants, and shifted to a football (soccer to Americans :)) field.

I was supposed to shoot last week, but scraped it 15 minutes before people showing up due to bad weather. The it cleared.

Yesterday was the fallback date (Saturday is the only day we can get most people when there's enough light.

I started shooting polaroids to adjust the exposure, and they came blank. Turned out there was part of the camera bellows disconnected - fixed it, but there were still problems. In the end I shot anyway, with an 8MP digital camera as backup (the photos were also for a book about the kibbutz, remember?) for which the resolution would be enough.

Today I went to the lab, thinking all the plates (4X5 film comes in distinct sheets, refered to as plates) were ruined.

I had them develop the first two to see how they were and adjust developing of the rest. Two hours later I breathed a deep sigh of relief - near perfect exposure, and no light penetration (the rest will be pushed a third to open up the faces...).

When the best one is scanned I will post it here!

This was the story of how I shot 500 people and got away with it!

So I will shoot on a 4X5 film camera, make a few frames, and then I'll have to scan them in order to print...
I have never uploaded a digital image (I've taken some, although I don't have a camera, my work has a sharable one) - I think film is still the best to keep all options, but digital wins for overall performance, when you factor in price and comfort...

Anyway, that's not what I wanted to say - as I near 4000 page views, which is fun, I just wanted to offer this game - a set of 10 signed postcards for whoever captures the 4000 screen shot of my page...

That was faster then I expected... First prize went to Bill-Cityfingers:winner:, a painter of dark materials - check out his gallery!

I have decided to update my first journal (writen after my 1000th pageview) when I reached the next landmark of 2000 page views.
This morning, Friday, October 13th, 2999!

Well - guess what: I missed it, thanks to a feature by Gilad (and if anyone on dA doesn't know him - the link to his page is below, and well worth following - a brilliant photographer, that does what I usually consider a lesser form of photography - he shoots what he sees, finding the images that are there to be captured, in a wn inspiring way that takes my breath away! The name of this journal pays tribute to the presentation that braught me here!

I can tell you now that a feature in Gilad's journal generated more exposure then my DD in July - more pageview, for sure, but more important, more new friends!

I haven't recovered fully from Gilad's feature, and another feature, this time by Frescendine from Italy generated yet more friends!
I should really be a member, so I can have a nice CSS journal... As soon as I scan my prints and open a print account...:)

I think I lost the thumbnails in my journal - last time the powers that be bestowed on me a week of membership...

I have kept the next part, adding only a few bold words in parantheses, to keep my first friend here - some of them I already feel are real friend, and hope I'll meet one day!

Someone sent me a presentation over the email (as people do...) - titled "A different view of Israel, Part II". Sounds familiar? You have probably seen it, or at least most of the images, taken by Gilad Benari a brilliant photographer and a fellow Israeli. I followed a link at the end, and discovered DA!

That was less then 100 (200) days ago, but with the current situation in Israel it seems like much much longer situation much better, even if not good now.

I posted some images, and had the luck to be picked up by Birgit, aka Kreativart, my first :+devwatch:, who decided to give me some exposure on her page, and led to others and more exposure.

I discovered a community - a unique feeling on the web (and I have been on many sites where people inteact and comment) and some people I can all friends even if I have never seen them (such as my sad Polish friend Luca author of my favorite :+fav::Illusion of Love

Last weekend, my image At the End of the Fourth Day became my first DD (Suggested by Tali, sellected by Hesitation!) - and when I logged on on Sunday morning, at first I thought something went wrong with the site :)

It took me a while to realize what had happenned - I am currently being watched by 62 people, rather then 8 before... It was, and still is, a great thrill! (Now I think 134, thanks to Gilad! - 154 with Frecsendine's help...)

Unfortunatly, I am also close to the end of my still life collection - each and every one of which took days to make rather then 1/125 or 1/500 of a second (and a very keen eye) for most photographes... I don't have the time to invest in such work (my youngest daughter is 2, after three sons - 11, 8, 8). So I take simple everyday photographs. Some are good, some less, but they don... ]]> =yori1976
