I needed that hiatus.

Lately I've been working on grad school applications, looking for a decent telecommuting job, and basically pulling my life together. I became a pescetarian (think vegetarian, but with fish), started working out twice a week, reading more, writing more; all in all, it's been a good run. I'm aiming to keep it going.

In an effort to try and maintain my abilities as a peer editor, I'm starting a little project for myself called critique-a-week. It sounds exactly like it looks: note me pieces of writing, and every week I will randomly select one (or two, or more, depending on time), critique it, and highlight it. Seeking Art Donations: US War Dogs Association

So: most people know I hit up a few furry cons every year. If you did not know that, there you go and get out your LOL FURRIES MURR internet references now before I continue.

One of the cons I hit up yearly is Fur Fright, a local con in Connecticut. Every year they pick a charity to donate to, have a charity auction and raffle where all proceeds go to the organization of their choosing. Last year, they raised $4000 for their charity -- I'm serious when tiny conventions of compassionate people can make a big difference. That's a serious chunk of change.

This year their charity is the US War Dog Association. To give you an idea of what this organization stands for, here's an excerpt from FF's community journal:

During the Viet Nam War the armed forces enlisted dogs and trained them to be soldiers. Donated by civilian families to help the war effort, the government promised the owners their animals would be returned after their tour of duty. The dogs were paired with young men (some no older than 17) and assigned to aid the troops in the dense jungles. To the soldiers who were taken away from their childhoods and families, these dogs became more than just tools of war, they became friends, brothers, and a source of companionship and sanity. The Army gave them numbers. The soldiers gave them names. When the soldiers were frightened and alone, these dogs stuck by their side and protected them. With senses far sharper than any human, the War Dogs detected enemy soldiers, mines, booby traps, ambushes, and snipers long before they could inflict harm. They were even known to attack the enemy in close quarters, and drag wounded soldiers to safety. It is estimated that they saved the lives of over 15,000 soldiers in the Viet Nam War alone.

When the war was over, and the troops shipped out, the War Dogs were left behind. The Army ordered them abandoned and destroyed as surplus armaments, the same as an unwanted piece of machinery. Their distraught handlers and fellow soldiersthose who had fought beside them and whose lives theyd savedtried in vain to gain custody and bring them home. They went through every military channel possible, but all their requests were denied. Most all the War Dogs who had served so bravely were euthanized, and some were left behind to unknown fates. Of the approximately 4,900 dogs that served in Niet Nam from 1964 to 1975, only 204 were brought back to the US. None were returned to civilian life.

They were Heroes, and they were killed, abandoned, and forgotten. As the soldiers left their sides for the last time, the dogs must have wondered, Where are you going? Take me with you! Were a team! Let me protect you! When the men were gone, the dogs waited faithfully for their return, guarding their patches of land. And when they didnt come back, they must have missed them, worried about them. And as the days stretched on they must have wondered what they did wrong to be left behind. And when they died, they died alone.

Veteran dog handlers collected 100,000 signatures for a memorial postage stamp, but were turned down (Bugs Bunny made itthe war dogs did not). When the Smithsonian was renovated the National Museum of American History did not mention War Dogs in the new Armed Forces History Hall (they even removed the one mention of a War Dog that existed). And when the veteran dog handlers applied to plant a memorial tree at Arlington National Cemetery, they were denied.

Says John Burnam, the president of the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association (VDHA): We wanted it to be a team memorialfor the War Dogs and the men who served with them. But they just wont do it. The bias is simply Humans Only.

Their objectives are:

-- Education: Bringing the history of all U. S. Military War Dogs from all wars to the general public.

-- Raising funds to establish a U. S. War Dog Memorial.

-- K-9 Corps Commemorative Stamp Drive: Petitioning to have the Postal Service issue a commemorative stamp for all Military working dogs.

-- Through fund raising support service dog organizations such as Military War Dogs, Police Canine units and Search and Rescue units.

here's the dealie:

i remember when the first concepts of portfolio were in the rocks, and god damn it's gone a long way. but honestly, it makes me a little sad that i can't use it. this could be a huge resource for writers and has the potential to, but it's not there and i'm not sure if it's in the works.

writers need portfolios just as badly as artists. writers, especially freelance ones who work for journals, magazines, or creative industries, need portfolios to showcase their talents and abilities like any other freelance industry -- and if deviantART offered that accessibility, i would be fucking excited.

i am not, however, fucking excited. i'm like-- lukewarm coffee excited. which, admittedly, is still something, but not what i was hoping for.

just looking at the system itself, it's great -- i was pumped to try it out. but as soon as it gave me the error for trying to upload textual deviations, i threw up my white flag. i understand this is an art site, but i get frustrated when deviantART introduces new features that breeze over literature and consider it secondary. for an example, the sitback feature -- while awesome for artists -- does nothing for literature.

things i'd like to see in portfolio for literature:

an inline, scrollable text box for literature portfolio material

preview tabs for lit deviations. similar to how any art/photos show a thumbnail, a lit preview could offer the story title and synopsis and/or the first line or 'hook' for the story, to effectively catch potential employer's attentions

potentially, an ability to put employer/commissioner feedback as an add-on to buff someone's resume.

yeah. until then -- eh. i'll continue using my own writing portfolio site.

"We've just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50.

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but they had no luck.

We're told one of the staff members at Jackson's home called 911.

LaToya ran in the hospital sobbing after Jackson was pronounced dead.

Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II."

My fingers have been all over the pulse of hip-hop lately.

I love music. My musical tastes have been varied since I was a kid: my first self-bought CD was Blues Traveler and my favorite band in High School was They Might Be Giants (surprise!); I've ground my hips to the nastiest electro beats and goth stomped to the bass of Covenant and She Wants Revenge. My only no-fly zones have been hip-hop and country, but that list has been getting cut in half over the past three years.

My college rides the awkward line between the ghetto of New Haven and Yale, but like any college, there's a lot of hip-hop and rap blasting from open dorm doors. At first it pissed me off and I tried to balance it out with stuff I preferred, but after awhile I grew to except it -- you kind of have to if you're going to live on a campus like mine, which is so small and close-knit that you can't avoid anything or anyone you don't like.

Slowly, and a little begrudgingly, I discovered that there was hip-hop and rap I actually liked.

It started off with Mac Lethal, who's the sort of rap artist that no one expects. He's outspoken and angry, politically inclined at some points, and grew up with the kind of rejection that's typical of rap artists working from the streets up: he's undeniably white, but he's got a "no, seriously, I don't give a shit" edge that most people like him don't have. But if you're expecting the typical "white guy trying to be black" card, I'm not sure if Mac fits that list:

Calm Down Baby

From there I fell into the rest of the Rhymesayers, which some people hate because they don't think they're "real" and some people love because they're pretty intelligent. For me, it's a little give and take. I love beats that have real music and thought behind them, but I hate political rap and I think hip-hop loses its edge when you take away the visceral aspect that a lot of modern rap artists seem to have. Two out of the Rhymesayer bunch worth talking about though are P.O.S. and Grayskul.

P.O.S. is just getting his shit off the ground and releasing his first album, Never Better, but what he's shown so far is great stuff and definitely worth the buy. To me, he's found the balance that Mac didn't really have, riding the line between good rhymes and some decent beats -- although he can still get a little too political for me.

The crown jewel of his new album is Optimist, which has really awesome and unique percussion with a laid-back beat and some good lyrics:

Grayskul, the other member of the Rhymesayers group that I'm fond of, is the opposite side of Mac Lethal. Explicit lyrics with a typically driven electronic/bass back-up, but Grayskul's got the street-edge that the other two are lacking and I think will inevitably carry him further into mainstream. Forums And You

One of the biggest tasks of the MN@ is taking care of the forums. We try and make sure each forum -- for both the galleries and the main forum -- stay on topic, free of spam, and safe for people to use. However, there are only a handful of MN@ to take care of both the forums and the chat network. MN@ balance this responsibility by relying on forum regulars to report threads to our chatroom, #MNAdmin, as necessary. We encourage ever user to know their forums and report anything that they think might be detrimental to the forum environment -- however, keep in mind that there is a right way and a wrong way to report a thread.

Reporting A Thread

Keep in mind, MN@ are not robots. They're real people! So when you come into #MNAdmin, here are a few things not to do:

** littlecatsfeet has joined.

** mulp has joined.
[link] LOCK PLZ
** mulp has left.

Ouch. These are not effective ways of reporting a thread! When you find a thread you think might be an issue, you need to come to #MNAdmin and wait for an MN@ to greet you. If there is an active MN@, they will greet you. if they don't, you can use the `note user feature to leave the link for an MN@ to take care of. When you report the thread, explain why it needs to be reported. Is it in the wrong forum? Is it a spammer? Let us know! It makes our job a lot easier. Here are some examples of how to report a thread:

Hi, trampolinezarefun! How can we help?
I found a thread that I think is in the wrong forum: [link]

TOAST: A Tutorial on the youthculture Method

Hello friends! Welcome to the late coming tutorial on the proper way to make toast. This turned into quite an epic endeavor with a mini dev-meet involved to properly record it. I hope you have much success in your toast future!

Equipment Required:

Bread
Toaster
Knife
Butter/Jam/Jelly or any similar condiment

PROCEDURE:

First, and most important, get someone to open your bag of bread. Any kind of bread is acceptable, but the thicker the bread slice, the better. I prefer white country style, as seen here, being opened by ~trampolinezarefun

Toast successful opened! Depending on how much toast you want, grab as many slices as you want. I prefer two:

And bring them to the toaster!

Be sure to set your toaster in the middle setting. You want the outside of the toast crispy and golden, but the inside soft. As you see here, my bread doesn't quite fit:

However, it still makes awesome toast!

Now I know what you're thinking. Youthculture, this toast doesn't seem very different from any other toast! But wait-- here comes the youthculturey part. First, remove the crust. I like to eat it, but you can throw it away if you want. And then comes the slightly more complicated part. Either using a knife or your fingers, pry the two golden crusty outer slices apart from the soft middle, like so:

And next, you break out your condiment of choice. In my case, it's butter.

And you start spread the butter on-- either in pieces, or literally spread depending on what you have. Mine is in pieces.

After they're both properly buttered, stack them on top of each other.

And you begin to roll them into a "butter burrito" as coined by ~VidaEternal.

What is fotoFRIDAY?

fotoFRIDAY began as a weekly photo-based poetry prompt at PoetryCritical, started by a fellow named onkelcrispy. Although fotoFRIDAY is just being revived there now, I thought it would be a fantastic idea to carry the concept over to dA and eventually add a few things-- such as the inclusion of prose, not just poetry. Every friday there will be a fotoFRIDAY entry on my journal; you can tell from the sad excuse for a banner I use as a header during that time. Feel free to give it a shot and link your work on that journal. At the end of the weekend, I post the results in a news article. It gets you writing and it also gets some new viewers and potential critiques to your work. I really encourage you to give it a try.

If you know any photographers here on dA that you think might like to contribute their work, have them send me a note-- or, on the other hand, if you find stock photos (or you yourself have photos) feel free to note me with any suggestions.

There are is no line minimum or maximum: just think of this as a weekly 'prompt' to get yourself inspired. Upload your piece as a scrap or deviation and link it to this journal.
