Alright so here's what's up...

I've nearly completed this semester of school with relative ease. I have not submitted anything for a while, but I have been working on some new awesome web-design/flash stuff as well as a matte painting/spacescape. I will finish those things up and submit them over the winter break.

But mainly what I want to address in this journal is my plans for another massive non-profit personal project. See, I have been having these visions and ideas coming into my head for almost a year now, and they have gotten much more intense as the end of 2009 approaches. As I had mentioned in my previous entry, this will be a "just-for-kicks" project that will be developed in flash and I am naming it "The Swift Project"

The effort required to complete this could possibly exceed quadruple that of advancedUI or v5 interface. I estimate around 700 to maybe even 1000+ hours that I will need to spend on it to make this thing become a reality... and much of it will be dedicated to the actionscript programming. Possibly 10,000 to 15,000 lines of code? IDK, Hard to say right now... but to prepare, I have just ordered two advanced textbooks to extend my already existing knowledge of the language because I will need to know it inside and out just to make it EASIER. This winter break will be SWIFT PROJECT PHASE-0: Preparation

I am still seeking an AS assistant developer to help me where I get stuck, because I KNOW that there will be moments where I WILL struggle. I'm still looking for AS developers that are highly experienced in flash interface programming. I can compensate, but only minimally as this is a non-profit project. Much of the reward will come in the form of credit/exposure on the project.

I have already brought on-board a sound-designer for this. The quality of this project needs to be maximized in every way possible. Absolutely no margin for half-assing on anything whatsoever.

The whole thing may sound insane, but to me, it just simply needs to be done... or I will never be satisfied.

Oh and if you're wondering what this whole project even is, I will not disclose what it is until I release it to the public mid next year. This is to maximize the "WOW" factor. Sorry folks, but that's just the way I need it to be. So Keep an eye out, I want to be able to release this by the end of next summer. It's going to be awesome!!

I won't reveal too much about it right now, but I'm still in the planning/pre-design stages right now... still wondering if I can even pull it off as more than just a mere "attempt".

I may even end up needing the assistance of some experienced ActionScript 2.0 developers. If there are any out there or you know someone who is fluent in the language, let me know.

Busy busy busy as I start preparing for my final exams as well as completing all of my projects... the summer is nearing and I am planning what I need to do with the time. Client work will be minimal as I need to budget most of my time toward the design and development of my new official portfolio site. I want this site to be the absolute cutting edge and nothing less. It will be featuring extensive flash and actionscript as well as futuristic elements. Along with that, some more future art/photo-manipulations and perhaps a new brush set! ...So stay tuned!

Lastly, I'd like to thank as well as for the recent DD feature on my "AdvancedUI: Status Screen" submission. I'm tempted to take them all down because I can't stand how pathetic they seem. v4 is now just like: "meh... big whoop". EVEN my v5 preview picture fails to do justice because it only showcases my first 6 brushes(which I'm going to revise with more detail). But I will of course leave all of my sets up, so don't worry.

I wish I could show you all what I have now, but I really really need to wait until I am completely finished. Why let everyone be half-amazed when they can be fully-amazed later?

Here are the brush categories for this set in full detail:

-INTERFACE(25 brushes): These are the hardest and most painful brushes to create in this set. Each brush is a complex chunk of ultra intricate technical detail that integrates and combines with data graphs, charts, statistical displays, tinytext, input parameters, measurements, indicators, and much more. These brushes are designed to be arranged together in any order or side. They are mainly for complex technical backgrounds and blueprint style brushing. You will all have fun with these, I guarantee it.

-MINIMAL(30 brushes): These brushes aren't as complex and cluttered as the INTERFACE category, however, they follow a more visually clean and elegant approach... much like you see in some high-end abstract art pieces(AKA 2D). These brushes are ideal for inserting tech on top of (but no limited to): abstract/3D pieces.

-CIRCULAR(around 10 brushes): I haven't started on these yet, but I reckon these will probably be just as painful as the interface category. Just like everything else in this set, my circular brushes will also be a MAJOR step up from my previous circular brushes.

I'm going to extend my release deadline to around mid-November. But this will be a 'fuzzy' deadline. I might release it sooner if I manage to finish earlier. Reason is because I'm thinking about doing revisions to my first several brushes in the INTERFACE category... I need to make them more consistent with the later brushes, which means I need to add a little more detail to them.

Anyway, I really can't wait until I release this set. I can't wait for all the comments I'll get on it from everyone who sees it. I honestly hope that this brushset will get maximum exposure among the community... rendering my hard working hours paid off.

When I release this set to the deviantart community, these brushes will be free to use and download and I will also allow for free usage of the brushes commercially. However, I will strictly disallow users from claiming the brushes or any part of the brushes to be of their work. If you submit an abstract artwork online with my brushes used in it without crediting me, you claim the brushes to be yours. I will therefore consider that as a violation of my policy and I will report your artwork to be taken down until you give credit. You may use these brushes any way you like, but they are still MY creation. That's all I ask.

Tech brush set v5
______________________________________________________

Brushes completed: 17
Brushes planned: 30-40
Planned release date: End of October

So I've been working on version 5 of my tech brushes for a few weeks now. Things are looking very good. The level of intricate detail I've put into each of these brushes have increased by a couple orders of magnitude compared to my last set "v4".

When I'm finished with this set, users will be able to do alot of neat things with the brushes. Examples:

1. Make a very very complex and intricate (but fake) blueprint. Print it out and show it to people.

2. Completely cover a wallpaper sized canvas with intricate tech interface elements easily.

3. Use it in your abstract artworks.

4. Use it in technology related advertisements, flyers, etc.

This set will redefine 2D tech drawing, even more so than "v4" did. Each brush in this set is a block of tech which contains elements that actually look like it's part of a complex engineering schematic. Every little piece has its own place and relates to other neighboring elements around it. No more random squares or lines that exist for nothing. Each brush is essentially a diagram of some unknown thing. Each little piece having its own role in the brush.

Here is a preview of the brushes:

[link]

^ Showcasing 6 out of a completed 9 brushes. I plan for a total of 30-40 (including circular brushes).

Yes, I do realize I took a 'low-quality' webcam picture. The reason is because I do not really want to reveal too much of the details of it at this time. This picture gives you the general feel of what I'm working on. When the time comes to release it, all the intricate detail will be there and you will all be in awe over it... well hopefully atleast most of you will be hehe.

I plan to create a flash animated tech resource as well. The animated resource will not come free however.

So I'm deciding to release yet a new one, v5. I'm hoping to set a release date somewhere in October. This one is going to be different from the others. Brushes won't be repetitive and small, they will come in big chunks of complex futuristic interface elements. No more lines and squares that mean nothing. It will contain around 50 complex brushes. It will be geared for use in artwork as well as brushing intricate interfaces.

I'm also planning to release a flash animated resource of the brushes available for purchase on flashden.com. They will include flickering of elements, ons/offs, rotating circles, text flow, arrows, etc, etc. all that good stuff for use in flash banners, movies, etc.

I'm busy with multiple web-design projects right now, but a lot of good stuff to come in the future!

I just realized I hadn't done a single terragen in about a year. I've tried to start new works but I just end up leaving them abandoned. So.. hopefully before 2007, I'll spawn a new work, but until then, busy busy with other, more important tasks. The brushsets have been a major success, and I am becoming more and more known for the brush sets as each day passes. v2 has 250 favs v4 is growing in favs pretty fast as well.

Thank you to all who credited me even the slightest bit. Special thanks to the ones who noted me personally with links to their works. Almost a year now, and scrolling down the preview pic of v4 still gives me a tingly feeling all over my body, similar to hearing an awesome tune in a song, because its so big, too big as one says. I think that might be a first.

Also, how many of you have heard this man's yell in games, movies, shows:

[link]

That yell used to scare me when I played Dark Forces as a little kid. You'd fall off of a high ledge and that sound would play. I guess it scared me as a kid because it sounds almost half-human, like a roar at the beginning followed by a scream. I do not know exactly why it always used to scare me though. Now, I am searching for the origins of the sound. It is used in many many different things. Most notably:

-Dark Forces
-Starcraft(Terran Academy)
-Nutrigrain commercial

v4 is lookin way better than I thought, ahead of schedule in-fact, which means even more brushes! Now I actually have to start worrying about the SIZE of the brushset file, which will be the only downside in this case, as well as possible incompatibility with some versions of photoshop, but I will try to make it compatible with most versions, somehow; but definitely for ps7. From the looks of it, it has already beaten any techset that exists today, 's sets don't even stand a chance against this, I'm not saying they're bad, but comparing it to mainframe is a whole 'nutha story. Only the folks over at depthcore can really compete.... if they actually made sets. I have succeeded in my goal, and still blastin' forward >>>>.

Release date still the 26th. And by that time, I will have worked on the set for 4 months.

Not many 2D brushsets are being produced today, maybe a few ones with 20 or less total brushes in them. However in January of 2006, I will reveal the greatest breakthrough in 2D history , and it will be free for everyone to use .

The set named 'mainframe' is supposedly brush set v4. With the success of sets 1, 2, and 3, i've decided to plan something special for #4. I am making it the biggest, and best 2D set on the net.

-Upwards of 300 fully detailed brushes
-Release in January
-Separated into different types: Line, Vertical Line, Wide Area 2D, Circular 2D, Wide minimalistic, and misc, for different brushing situations to fit in your works.
-Will be Compatible for all versions of photoshop
-Seperate file released for GIMP.

It may be my last brush set for a while, I may release a smaller set by Summertime.

Please add me to your watchlist if you are intrigued by mainframe, and wish to be notified of its release ASAP
11/4/05: Plans & categories revealed

____________________________

11/17/05: Well guys, the set is looking VERY impressive so far from my perspective. It's better than anything I've done before thats for sure, its way better than my previous sets .

However right now I'm behind schedule somewhat. Everything else in life has an effect on the progress of the set. As well as lazyness, which I hope to overcome. I've got school, client's sites to design, computers to repair, lazyness(40& of the cause), etc. I also need to get the ball rollin' on my own sites, z-design, z-animation, and maybe a personal site of my own. It was supposed to be launched last year. So after this brushset, and maybe ONE artwork( javajones collab ), I'm planning to take a rest on photoshop and after I'm done finishing up the Z-sites and getting them up, I'll will resume stuff here.

As for the set, I've only got one category done and just starting on the horizontal mids. Theres a slight chance this could be delayed until EARLY February, but unless I start to haul ass on this project, it's still safe to say everything will go as promised

12/03/05: Finally reached the bottom of the 2000 pixel canvas. Top to bottom tech goodness. Still not out of the horizontals though. The middle section is 87% finished, and going along nicely. I hope to finish all horizontal brushes by the 21st. I'm leaving on a trip to the mainland on the 22nd, bringing along a laptop with an 8-hour battery life. The plane trip is 7 hours long, so I should be well caught up on this.

Release date is January 25th.
Mean time, stay tuned

After like 2 weeks of almost giving up, I bought a converter for another power supply to hook into my motherboard, turns out it runs non-stop, therefore it is my damn ocz unit that is failing on me. Good thing is though, i have a warranty on it, so i wont be paying for any expensive replacements anytime soon .

Now about the barhold thing.. I found I may have the capacity to achieve this trick with some practice and strength training. What a barhold is, or often called as a flagpole/flag/flagpole hold, its where you defy gravity using a simple pole, or the top of a wall, or a ladder, or anything similar. The way it's done is you grasp the pole sideways with two hands, arms extended out, the bottom has to be straight, the top on can bend a little, hands are spread out from each other by approx. 3-4 feet, body sideways. With great strength to weight ratio, you then lift up both legs into the air, so your body is near horizontal, and it appears you are hanging sideways, pretty neat really. I have practiced it for the past 4 days or so, i can only hold it for like .7 seconds lol, BUT, when i began i couldnt hardly even get my legs up. It takes great obliques and upper body strength. My goal however, is to hold it up for 5-6 seconds. It wont be soon, but atleast i can keep at it.

I like to fix things, but this thing might need a serious replacement. I believe the motherboard popped somehow and has a bad capacitor. If I let it sit for a day without running, it probably can run for a good 2 days or so, I'm not sure, Im going to do more testing though.

In the meantime, I'm on a.. different, computer, atleast it has photoshop.
As you know I am currently collaborating with ~javajones in a new terraspace piece bound to be twice as good as anything I have ever done before, for certain legal reasons regarding the program used to create this piece, I cannot setup the print version until a certain time, so I won't submit the deviation until that time(I want everyone who views the deviation to know theres a print out as well ) Unfortunately it will probably be around the end of 2005... or heck I can just submit the deviation right when I finish then I would submit the print later, but I wouldn't get as much sales..... Also I might not submit it before I create my portfolio site, I'm sorry but thats just my plans.

So.... until all this crisis is solved, I'll probably be creating some more tech brush sets ( YAY TECH BRUSHES ) and maybe some terraspace scenes to compensate for the lack of art ive been submitting lately.

-update-

today i started working on another terragen piece... javajones is on vacation for 2 weeks leaving me on my own. This render looked really nice and had alot of potential. took me a solid 3 hours to get the settings all good. so... 9 hours into the render(9000x12000), the computer shuts off, cant get it back, and all that ive worked for today is gone.

Below is an explanation of my opinion I wrote built up of 8 paragraphs on all the anti-terragen hype that has been going around here, I feel I need to cover and clarify some things up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Many anti-terragen rants, expressions, hate, and full-on essays that deviate the general use and purpose of terragen are showing up in alot of places I've seen. Most are about the art-side of terragen and why it isn't considered art because it is considered 'easy' or a mere 'generator'. Let me tell you something folks, I admire the people who create original and perfected pieces to the limits of their ability. Art requires patience, imagination, ideas, perfecting, skill, emotion, perspective, and the list goes on. It doesn't matter how it's created, it's the final piece and meaning behind it that is meant to be seen, alot of things can be seen in a piece, like how the artist felt whilst partaking upon the action of perfecting their picture, and henceforth transpiring more and more ideas to utilize in the forthcoming future. Some people are just too dull to think or see it. They can't even get past the fact that a portion of their picture used an "unrealistic and highly overrated program that merely uses pathetic noise levels to create a random landscape they didn't even draw, the program did it for them and therefore why should I even bother with this". In my opinion, that's totally disregarding the depiction behind someones else's terragen-art. It doesn't necessarily have to look realistic, but rather more on the abstract side, expressive, and certainly more accustomed to the title that the artist gave it.

There are beginner renders that I have seen and appreciated, the ones where it looks as if they gave it all they've got and worked on it for a well amount of time. Some people are too impatient when they see a really great render they have created, and just so desperately want to submit this sexy render onto deviantart and show it to everyone else, which is completely fine, however there are a number of things that could ultimately better every render, for example you could add in a planet, fool around with the color lighting, levels, maybe add a border, make it a print for your wall, collaborate with someone else who excels within different places, utilize resources and tutorials etc etc. not something necessarily extremely difficult to execute, especially if you research some useful tutorials laying around.

Now some people mention that there are way too many overdone concepts in terragen, such as a grey landscape with blue sky, the most basic form you can get with the program, and also indicates that the user did not care to explore, and experiment with the many options that are presented within. I agree with some who say there are just too much of those kind of images laying around here, but in a way I disagree, because it may be one of their first renders in terragen, and are a beginner. They need to explore and experiment a bit more, and be more of a risk taker with the program if they want to excel, in which everyone does. Sometimes that coolest things can transpire when settings are foolded around with. And it's something all you anti-terragen people must realize. they also must realize that this is a public art gallery consisting of an excess of about a million people, and only a handful of them know how to use terragen properly, so of course you will see the same repetativness in terragen pictures. It's inevitable that people will become annoyed with it and start up anti-terragen hype.

I think pieces of which the description has the word "just" in it should ultimately and always be thrown into the nifty and convenient scraps section here. The 'deviation' portion of the submit options clearly states that it is a polished picture and that a well amount of time was spent to perfect it. There are tons of basic and seemingly incomplete terragen pictures i've seen around, and I'm definitely not saying they're bad, to be honest, my own gallery ain't that impressive. It's just the fact that they use the word "just" in their description. For example, "Just something I whipped up in 10 minutes, enjoy", "Just another experiment I rendered in 23 minutes", "This ones just a little something I did this morning, gotta go". And the section that it is submitted to is clearly indicating that they are supposedly submitting something that they worked hard on to near ever more to their vision, yet didn't even bother to do anything with it in post-process, it is essentially the wrong section for it, they didn't even bother thinking to find someone else whom to collaborate with, didn't research, didn't fool around with it in post-work programs, didn't seek advice and pre-submission critique. Some of you may now think that it's just because they wanted to experiment and explore and grow.. total...

Number One Idiot of 2004

I am a medical student currently doing a rotation in toxicology at the poison control center. Today, this woman called in very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. I quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants. I told her that she better bring her daughter into the emergency room right away.
Number Two Idiot of 2004

Early this year, some Boeing employees on the airfield decided to steal a life raft from one of the 747's. They were successful in getting it out of the plane and home. Shortly after they took it for a float on the river, they noticed a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them. It turned out that the chopper was homing in on the emergency locator beacon that activated when the raft was inflated. They are no longer employed at Boeing.

Number Three Idiot of 2004

A true story out of San Francisco : A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America, walked into the branch and wrote "this iz a stikkup. Put all your muny in this bag." While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller's window. So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to Wells Fargo. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller. She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light in the harbor, told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, "OK" and left. He was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America.

Number Four Idiot of 2004

A guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded all of the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag, the robber saw a bottle of Scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but the cashier refused and said, because I don't believe you are over 21. The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because he didn't believe him. At that point, the robber took his driver's license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk looked it over and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and he put the Scotch in the bag. The robber then ran from the store with his loot. The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the robber two hours later.

Idiot Number Five of 2004

A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop nervously waving revolvers. The first one shouted, "Nobody move!" When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him.

Idiot Number Six of 2004

Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. It seems the liquor store window was made of plexiglass. The whole event was caught on videotape.

Idiot Number Seven of 2004

Ann Arbor : The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti , Michigan at 12:50 a.m., flashed a gun and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away.

Ah, long time no post..

My site is coming along well. You can see some progress screens in my scraps gallery. Basically I got the main page done, I just need to modify it and make it look better (It needs a background). So when I'm finished with that, I pretty much know what I am going to be doing the next several weeks here with the rest of the site. When I do release the site ( [link] ), Me , and will be working on our pre-made templates using programs dreamweaver, flash mx 2004, photoshop 7, 3dsm6, swift3d, and php.

As for myself... not much going on. Past few weeks, the school gave out 3 page essay assignments one after the other, maybe each week? Included reports about endangered species, important events of 1900's, biology, and so on. Thanksgiving coming up and I'm gonna scarf alot of the turkey, because I like turkey. With atleast 4 days off, I can get a substantial amount of work done on my site, but maybe not alot of overall progress. Building sites from scratch requires faliure, faliure again, then succeeding, then modifying.

As for my deviations, I am proud to present my featured deviation "The Northern". It took almost 5 hours total, rendering, trying new perspectives, then modifying. Although it may look spectacular, there exists a 3000 x 1500 version, which is high quality, and the stars are better. In the deviation version.. you can tell the picture is resized.

I am not just going to work on my site.. I will upload more artwork and continue my activity creating pictures here on deviantart.

Thank you all for +favs, +watch, comments & critiques, and visiting my page. I hope you enjoy further uploads.
> I have been brainstorming the Z.A. portfolio site for quite some time now. I think it's going to pwn the hell out of most design sites, and our company(~ bubbafre and I) will also pwn the hell out of them becuase of our high quality layouts at low prices you won't even believe when you see what we can do and come up with. Anyway, the site has begun its progress. I'm not working on it right now, because I've got another client to create a site for.
