My two cents on their designs:

Firstly, for =Maksn's [link] , I especially liked the smooth feel of the lineart and the cool-look of Ziro as a human. She even made two Ziros. However, I did not see SSS Ziro in the character, he looked a lot different, if I may say. Awesome though, but not Ziro.

And for ~matsunoki's [link] , I liked how he redesigned SSS Ziro's clothes into a more human-y (if there's ever such a word) clothes. Although Ling is also the name of one of my other characters, he chose the name to fit the redesign of Ziro as a human.

Thank you to both of you, thank you for joining!

The challenge started on May 26 (Tuesday) and was supposed to be finished a week after, but later decided to end it every Saturday instead.

We'll be continuing these challenges and we would like to invite anyone who would like to join.

Here are some simple rules we follow:
The time frame of one challenge would be 2 weeks. Although it's quite long for a challenge, I pretty much begged Kaecee to extend the time frame from 1 week to 2 weeks (personal issues).
Themes will be suggested in turns. For the first challenge, I suggested the theme, Kaecee for the next and so on (depending on who decides to join).
Challenges can be done in any style you want. Kaecee and I decided not to limit ourselves to a certain style per challenge since we both have our own unique styles.
Progress shots may not be posted in DA. The most final image may only be uploaded on the day of (or at least the day before) the deadline

So I went to their institution and inquired what their curriculum would be, which they answered as Web Design; Publishing and Animation; Computer Illustration; Electronic Design; Photo Editing and Design. So I told myself, for a small fee, it’s not that bad (I wouldn’t expect much), at least they have web design, publishing and animation. So I enrolled. I wanted to know and understand the Web Standards and Usability and to apply new techniques to doing web layouts so I can further use to earn money.

Didn’t I tell you I wouldn’t expect too much? But hey, if my expectations were Level 3 (Neutral), the first day was below my expectations (probably at Level 1). I don’t know for the rest of the days though. They had their own computer laboratory but the computers really (really) sucked. How could you even use Photoshop if the mouse doesn’t even get along with you? There wasn’t even a whiteboard for the instructor to write in! And the computer monitors need some banging for it to work properly! Hell, high school computer laboratories would probably look and feel better!

First of all, their advertisement was very misleading.

Web Design, Publishing and Animation. Some of my fellow classmates were already professional graphic artists who wanted to learn web design and animation (3D, that is). They even inquired if 3D Animation would be in the curriculum and they said yes. The person who said it probably didn’t know the difference, I can’t blame that person.

“Be One Of The Industry’s Top WEB DESIGNER and GRAPHIC ARTIST” was their tag line. I wish, I just wish.

Lesson for the day: I recommend enrolling at First Academy of Computer Arts in Makati instead. Even if it’s expensive, it’s really worth it. They will, and I’m sure of it, teach you in-depth knowledge and not just the basics. People at First Academy will elaborate and give you examples and exercises and their facilities are way better.

I can’t say anything more. I’ll just have to wait for the 4th session where the Web Design class would start. Until then, I’ll still keep my expectations low, low, low, low. I just hope I didn’t waste my 3.5k on something worthless.

Mechanics & Requirements:

As I've said, you only need to draw him as a normal human being. That is, no special effects like a flaming head or flaming limbs or dancing barbed tentacles covering his body, etc. Dyed hair is normal. Just no superpowers or fantasy effects. Ask yourself, if he was human, what would he look like?

Still, you need to keep the elements of his identity as SSS Ziro. That is, if people see him, he'll easily be recognized, "Hey, that's Ziro! Only, he's human." Do not stray off from the design of SSS Ziro but don't stick to it either.

Only one (1) entry per person. So make sure you do your best in that single entry.

Take note that SSS Ziro is different from the other Versions in my gallery. Drawing him as Version 6 or Version 1.3 disqualifies you. Although, SSS Ziro and Versions 1.3 and 6 may have some similarities in appearance, it is up to you to make me believe/see your drawing as SSS Ziro and not the other two versions. (This part is a bit tricky.)

Colored/B&W entries are accepted. It can also be traditionally or digitally rendered. Full-bodied concept designs and those with details are more likely to catch my attention, but there will still be other criteria I'll be looking into. You don't need to draw backgrounds, but if you like, it's up to you.

I also have a thing for cool/unique fashion trends and/or steam punk. Maybe you can incorporate that into your drawing. It could be a plus point.

Thinking of a creative name related to the word zero is also a plus. Explain the history of the thought-up name. Since there may only be limited terms related to the word zero, it would be advantageous if you could submit your idea before others would.

Deadline of submission is on May 31, 2009, approximately a month and a half from now.

In the Countries of Darkness (including Everdark, Hollerdam, etc), there are approximately 15 Full Moons and 3 Crescent Moons in every Moon (month). At days when the moon is clear in the night skies, a day is called a Night. When the moon is not visible, a day is called a Day (for us, it is called Morning, except in the Countries of Darkness, the sun seldomly visits the horizon).

Full Moons appear at almost any Moon (month). Crescent Moons appear only at Flower Moon.

A Moon/Month Table has been based on most of the Native-American Names of every month:
January - Wolf Moon
February - Snow Moon
March - Crow Moon
April - Waking Moon
May - Flower Moon
June - Hot Moon
July - Buck Moon
August - Red Moon
September - Harvest Moon
October - Hunter's Moon
November - Beaver Moon
December - Cold Moon

This table is then used as reference for the months in the novel.

Everdark Vampires - _{For the purpose of categorizing from other vampire families, I have tagged mine under the name Everdark. Everdark Vampires appear and are mentioned in the novel (I used to be and am) writing, entitled In The Dark. Some parts of the novel are in my gallery though the whole novel is still in the process of revisions and refining.}

Everdark Vampires stop 'aging' when pure-flowing human blood is taken into their system. This means as soon as a vampire has had his "First Kill", they finally appear ageless.

The blood of the First Kill must be from a lively host, and must not already been stained by death or near-death. This means, the host of the blood should not have died before the blood is taken in the body of the vampire.

In cases when the host of the blood has already been dead before or in cases wherein animals' blood is taken, the vampire "grows old" or "ages" (at least not as fast as a human does), until their First Kill.

When a vampire does not take in blood, they do not die, but they become weak. Not only do they become weak but they also delay "aging". (Delaying aging is different from not aging though.)

Werewolves stop aging every time the moon is full. Normally (when the moon is not full), one (1) werewolf year is equal to that of seven (7) human years, as opposed to the popular myth of dog-aging, where one (1) human year is equal to (7) dog years. This makes werewolves almost ageless.

Humans that have recently been turned into werewolves through wounds or by being bitten are not aware what they are doing in their werewolf forms.

Only will they be aware if they have killed the werewolf which changed them. If the werewolf that changed them was killed by a different werewolf or if it has been killed by others (hunters, natural death, etc), the human-werewolf that has been changed will gain his control over himself forever.

Werewolves, like humans, get sick or die by natural causes. But unlike humans, their body resistance is stronger. Also, unlike vampires, their cells are not fully-regenerative.

The Versions - _{A Version is a particular form of a person or a variant of a person, usually residing in an alternate universe or a different timeline.}

1. Zero/Zeero: the 19-year old boy who wears a bandana around his head to keep his messy hair standing. He usually wears a shirt with torn-up sleeves, baggy shorts, and rubber shoes. Unlike Zero, Zeero is able to manipulate the blue flame.
2. Super Zero: a zero by day, a superhero by night.
3. Zero Tolerance: a ninja heir to the Gale Ring (a clan treasure that enables him to control the wind element).
4. Astral Ziros: the SSS, the Canceller, the Hell Angel and the Nontensity Ziros.
5. Sifr: the Story Whisperer who has a fireball for his head and a map of swirls on his skin.
6. Null: the extra-ordinary college boy who can easily calculate the formulae and outcomes of any problems (mathematically) in his head.
7. 2100 Ziro: the future Ziro in the alternate world of 2100.

The Heroes & The Heroines: - _{Other than the Versions, there are heroes/heroines of their own stories.}

1. Eno Everdark/Unity: the young girl who was needed to be changed into a vampire in order to be saved.
2. Eerht/Tellus: the young boy who's regarded as an angel by those who have been with him.
3. Spin: ???
4. Corin Duttoni: the one whose name has meaning.
5. Sain Speak: that who speaks danger.
6. Le Rue: a lone traveler that carries a possessed casket on his back. He passes down judgment upon the corrupted people.

The Supporting Characters:

1. Ling: a childhood friend of the wind ninja Zero. Their friendship is a secrecy to their clans.
2. Adalheid: the Canceller.
3. Circe: whose name came from Circinus, the compass.

The Antagonists:

1.Oriz/Oreez

I just got home last night from a 3-day trip to Singapore. I didn't go to work today to try and get some rest. I even went to the tailor for getting my Xmas Party Costume. Our Xmas Party is Chinese-themed and I designed my own costume based on the Monkey King, mixed with other traditional Chinese dresses from Dynasty Warriors. I even got a mask from a store from Singapore for 8$, which I think is a fair price.

I got parts of my costume last night and tried them on. The vest part is so fit that I can almost hardly move. While the 'hanfu' part is small, I can hardly breathe.

Okay, my costume was adjusted yesterday and I was able to fit it again last night. The hanfu part is better but I can still hardly move in the vest part but it's okay. But when I looked at myself in the mirror, I realized it didn't look too Chinese. It looked jungle-y.

Anyway, the missing parts of the costume are:
1. the pants,
2. the gauntlets/shin guards w/ dragon designs (to make it look Chinese)
3. the flesh-coloured shirt w/ dragon design from back to front that would look like a tattoo, and
4. my mask

And so, the day has come... Today's the day of our xmas party. I had to do additional work for my costume, to make it look more like The Monkey King, which is of course, the original idea.

The shirt I purposedly drawn-on a dragon tattoo will be my body-"skin". Inside, I'm planning to wear the body-"muscle" I made out of paper plates, supported by a fit shirt provided by my mom.

Aside from the Hanfu, I asked my mom to cut me a piece of the jungle-y cloth for a loincloth. I also made a golden crown and golden bangles for additional accessories.

Instead of wearing the mask I bought from Singapore, I made a new one out of a paper plate and painted it with the Monkey King face.

I hope it all works out. (Wishing I wouldn't be a laughing stock.)

So instead of focusing on just the war, let's focus on every difficulty/problem that a Filipino would tackle.

Let's start off individually. You could check the list of existing superheroes in (just don't forget to ask/credit respective creators) or you can create your own.

Making my own:

+You need to have a name. The superhero name. Your character doesn't have to be you.
+You need to have a secret identity. The superhero's real name, occupation, and things that revolve in the real world.
+Your character should have one thing very good against at. Your strengths.
+If your character is good against at something. He should have some sort of side-effect at that. Your weakness.
+Costume. Who doesn't want a costume?
+Now, draw your superhero in his costume, fighting against what he is good against.
+When you're through, we'll make a new superhero roster/team, and later, collaborate on the super big poster.

Something like that.

Any suggestions?

You can have as many characters as you want. But we don't want characters that have almost the same strengths and weaknesses. Our characters should at least be unique with each other.

"This is for a new Filipino artist magazine. Each issue will do collaborative projects. For example, in this inaugural issue, the cover of our magazine is a blank canvas for artists to use. We are calling out to 3,000 artists to participate and create a cover, thereby, making each magazine an original piece of art.

More importantly, we will display all 3,000 covers at an exhibit in January 2009, which will allow us to take a snapshot of the current Filipino contemporary art movement. (Our grassroots version of the Whitney Biennial). The magazine will be sold in the Philippines and abroad. Mostly bookstores here. We are trying to put it in museums abroad, e.g. SF MoMA, NY MoMa, Guggenheim, Yerba Buena and the like.

We are putting great efforts to outreach outside of Manila. To rally artists all over the Phillippines and abroad to participate. And not just visual artists. We would like writers, musicians, performers, set designers, dancers, actors, etc. all types of artists to submit art work. Fine artists and commercial artists. First, my site. It's finished already but it's still not. Argh, I hate myself for not giving it time.

Second, my work. Whenever I think about work and anything related to my job or where I work, I get headaches. Argh, I hate my job.*

Third, the Artwork TShirt Competition. I registered for the contest (this is my 2nd time. I actually made it to the finals last time.) and I still don't have anything and September 30's the deadline. Argh, I hate mind blocks.

Fourth, the 3rd Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards. I have a story and I have a plot but I don't know how to start it. September 30's also the deadline for this. And I really want this bad. Argh, I hate September 30.

Fifth, it's frustrating to think about not having to do what you've been trained to do. Like for example, me being a math graduate but not having to use the math I've learned and almost forgetting all of them. And me having studied 3d and not having to practice any of it. Argh, I hate having no time to do all the things I want to do.

Sixth, it's even more frustrating to think about what you want in life when you have so many things you want to do. Argh, I hate deciding.

It's just too much. For me. To handle.

First off, what is a Version? In wikipedia, a version is defined as a particular form or a variant of something. It’s actually like that, except that a version with a capital “v” is a particular form of a person or a variant of a person, usually residing in an alternate universe or a different timeline.

So, how many Versions does it take to change a light bulb? There are infinite Versions because the universe is infinite itself.

Zero has different Versions. Others are known as Ziro or Zeero or other names that may have originated from the Root. The X-Men also have Versions. Even Joey. The Root is usually the first Version.

Since the topic is already open, I’ll be discussing the history of the Versions of Zero. I’ll probably show you later how they look like.

Zero
(The Root, or Version 1)

<sup>The name Zero originated from the idea that I have no favorite number when I was asked. Zero being none became the reason zero being my favorite number.

The first Zero became during 2003. He was inspired by E.A.Damaso’s Cats Trail’s Butler’s secret look, in which some of you may have seen when E.A.Damaso’s site was still up.

Zero is a 19-year old boy who wears a bandana around his head to keep his spiked hair standing. He usually wears a shirt with torn-up sleeves, baggy shorts, and rubber shoes. Unlike the other Versions, the Root did not have any special abilities; in fact he is only a normal person with his own normal, personal problems.

He is the main protagonist of the story Siopao, which I came up for what I was feeling back then. Series of events in the story were based from series of events in my life, making Zero, me and I, Zero. The story, which was supposedly drawn as a comic, was not continued as planned.</sup>

Super Zero
(Version 1.1)

<sup>Super Zero is just a spin-off of Version 1. What if a zero is given extraordinary skills and abilities, what would he do with them?

Super Zero has the emblem of “Z” tattooed on his bare chest, just like that of Superman. His color theme is black and blue. But unlike Superman, he doesn’t wear his underwear outside his pants.</sup>

Kazenin Zero (aka Zero Tolerance or Ulan)
(Version 2)

<sup>Version 2, like the Root, wore a bandana around his head and was usually seen wearing a shirt with torn-up sleeves. The colors black and blue originated from here, being a ninja and from the wind (Kaze) clan. He wears an armguard on both of his arms and carries a huge, sharp, icicle-like sword. Like the Root, he wears baggy pants, except his are tightened around the ankles.

He is one of the protagonists of the comic parody of the Lord of the Rings I created during 2003. The characters in the comic are based from my friends.

Another Version of him is bulkier and wears armor rather than ninja suits. Version 2.1 looks more like a middle-aged guy than a teenager. He was forgotten.</sup>

Andrew
(Version 1.2)

<sup>Andrew is a name derived from the title of the story, Siopao. I had a friend who is known as Siopao Master, and so I used his real name, for a Version of Zero.

Andrew, like the Root Zero, is a 19-year old boy. Unlike Zero though, he’s a different image—almost as if he’s a different person, in which he actually is. It’s a bit confusing. Andrew is the main protagonist in the comic Siopao. This is actually based from the original Siopao story, in which I created in 2003. Some of the things and events were changed in this version to hide those that are in the original. And so, what happens in Siopao Zero (the original one) also happens in Siopao (the revised one) except that before Andrew (or alternately Zero) commits suicide, he meets a certain person who changes his decision. The person he meets is Zeero.</sup>

Zeero Huy
(Version 1.3)

<sup>Zeero Huy was a name derived from the Gundam Wing pilot’s name Heero Yuy.

Zeero Huy is an improved Version of the Root. He is also somehow a reincarnate, having all the Root’s memories, and strangely, Version 2’s as well. It is said that Version 2 was his past life.

Being a reincarnate, he was able to stop himself (Version 1.2) from committing the same mistake as he (Version 1) did in the past. Having become two different persons, they lived separate and different lives.

Zeero Huy is a 19-year old boy who, just like the Root, wears a bandana and hair the same way. He wears jacket (in which sometimes he folds it all the way up to his biceps) and pants that have the symbol of Version 2 printed on them: the blue fire. He wears spiked bracelets on his wrists and a barbed wire necklace around, of course, his neck.</sup>

Everdark Vampires are the vampires in my novel In The Dark. Like the Everdark werewolves, the vampires have 2 types: 1) those that have control over their thirst for blood and 2) those who do not.

The first type, the one who has control over the thirst for blood, usually looks human. While the second type may have formed a monster-like feature, such that their knee joints can be folded the other way. They also have leathery-skin interconnecting their arms with their sides.

Unlike other vampires in other canons, Everdark vampires age. But they only age until they continuously take in blood. So if Vampire A died and/or crossed (term for becoming a vampire) at age 17, they could still look older as long as they are not taking in blood. But once they take in blood in a continuous pace, the aging process will stop.

Memories of the bitten become transferred through its biter through the blood. Sometimes, only certain memories or memories that are the most vivid can become transferred to the vampire.

Incidents of such are revealed in "Door", a short story featuring a character in In The Dark. (I'll post Door 1 if you want to read it. But if not, I won't bother.)

Everdark vampires, like vampires of other canons, die if their hearts are pierced with a stake (or for the matter, anything sharp).

Although I call them Everdark vampires, vampires in the IN THE DARK canon did not originate in the country, Everdark. It has been said that the the very first vampires in the said canon, originated from Ashen, the Country of Light.

Everdark werewolves (or werewolves in the In The Dark canon) have 2 types: 1) The solo hunters and 2) the pack hunters.

When faced with 1 of each of the types, the more dangerous is the solo hunter. Since a solo hunter, well, hunts solo, it is more experienced in hunting and killing its prey.

A pack hunter however, is a type of werewolf that usually hunts in a pack. These types of werewolves are usually those that have lost their humanity since they have been exposed to killing too much.

An Everdark werewolf can gain its humanity back, if only, it takes the life of the werewolf that had made it become. Once an Everdark werewolf turns a human into a werewolf (by scratching or biting the vitim), the scent of that werewolf becomes known to the victim. Making the newer werewolf know/track its creator.

Everdark werewolves transform into werewolves when the light of the full moon touches them, or as they gaze into the fullness of the moon. No single werewolf can look the same, especially if during their man-form, they have changed clothing.

It is said that the clothing of the human fuses to his skin, at the stage of transformation into a werewolf. Some have even seen werewolves that looked as if they have leather for skin. The most prominent man-feature on the werewolf, however, is his hair--the color and the length of it becomes visible and similar to when he's a werewolf.

Not much is known about werewolves though, except for a few more facts like:

Silver kills a werewolf. ONLY if it pierces through the heart.

Wolves and Werewolves, for that matter, are worshiped as gods in a place called Hollerdam, a country in the northern part of the Countries of Darkness.

Somewhere in the eastern part of the Countries of Darkness, a city is built and protected in silver. This city resides within the land where werewolves usually hunt.

Well anyway, he's still experimental. And he still doesn't have a definite background story.

I've ideas for him already though. Like the fact he doesn't talk since the day he discovered his dangerous ability. Or he avoided to anyway.

What is his ability anyway?

It's simple really. Except it's a bit complicated. No one knows what it's called yet. Maybe you can give me something to call it. I'm still deciding... "Godword"? Like when God speaks and something will happen. But I wouldn't want to be blasphemous, now, would I?

Sain's ability is like that. It actually started when he was still maybe... 10 or 12 years old, when he accidentally made his family disappear (or making himself don't exist in their family, something like that) by saying simple words like "it's always the same".

Colors faded away and turned everything into blacks and whites. The life he lived became non-existent. Everything changed.

Since then, he avoided talking unnecessary things or things that may mean something.

I'm planning to join him in 's BIG 6 Tournie though, but his ability might become too powerful and too weak at the same time.

So anyway, the ideas I have are still vague. Maybe you can help. Maybe you can help conceptualize more ideas with me.

My target date for this portfolio is by the end of June, that means I still have less than a month's time to work hard. I'm actually in the process of doing the individual pages for each work I have done. It's not easy though, adding the details that would "tell" the story on how I created the idea would prove somehow hard when I could not remember it anymore.

I also promised myself that I would concentrate in doing 3D after I finished the online portfolio.

I'd still be doing minor projects during my free time in the office or at home though. I might even update my sss characters' timelines while I'm at it.

Introduction:

When I first read Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman, especially about the part he said that next time, he’s going to write a story about a statue he has seen, I realized that anyone could write stories just from things you see or events that happen everyday, that you don’t need to think really hard for something to come up with, and that the story can be found everywhere. This made me take my Maui & Sons notebook (which the company gave us to use during kick-offs or team-buildings) and write a reminder that someday I will write something about how I write, and/or stories of random things that don’t usually have stories.

Author's Comments

This story was intentionally written for the ANIMAX Awards contest "A Story You Wish to be Animated" or something close to that, can't remember, really. So basically, this was written around mid-2007.

I wasn't really planning on putting this up in DA but decided to put it up anyway.

I haven't done any editing here since the time I have submitted this entry to ANIMAX, so reading back, I might see things I might change in the future.

I'll probably publish this as a novel. That was the initial plan anyway.
