Okay. After returning back from Sarawak a week ago, I was meaning to immediately write in my journal how awesome my experience had been in Kuching, Sarawak, traveling around places and such. Instead, my busy schedule had only gotten worse.

See, my parents still need to inspect our soon-to-be new house before our "official" moving day at the end of this December. This is important because we need to watch over those workers as they slowly renovate our house, making sure that they don't accidentally screw-up while in the job. In the weekdays, my father needs to go to work as usual, so he's unable to accompany my mother while she's inspecting that house. My mother doesn't want to be alone, so I have to take my father's place. Which means I'm having to leave our current house -- and away from my computer and the Internet -- every weekdays.

It's maddening!

I do hardly anything at all while being there, besides occasionally helping my mother do some stuff like carrying a few things around the house. My presence there is mainly just to accompany my mother, keeping her from feeling too lonely as she inspects the house. Most of the time, I only sit there while messing around with my PSP and DS, which luckily I always carry them around as I travel, to let the time passing by. We usually don't return back home (back to our current house) until sunset.

So, for the moment, I'm afraid that I can't be online as often as I usually can. Another bad news, my father just told me that there are no phone lines yet in that housing estate where our new house is located. So it's doubtful whether or not I'll be able to find a way to access the Internet after moving there. Only time can tell. But hopefully, I'll be able to find a solution by then.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Revolution

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

We haven't completely moved-in yet; until then, we'll be constantly busy preparing this new house, from fixing new curtains to fixing new ceiling lights. It's tiring, but until we move on this December, I'll have to deal with traveling back and forth between our current house and our new house within this period. I'm not sure if I'll be able to access the Internet there... Until then, let's not worry about this yet, but hopefully, I'm sure I'll be able to try to find a way to access the Internet from there.

Tomorrow, on October 22nd, my parents and I will be traveling to Penang Island for a 1-2-night stay there, to attend one of my cousin's wedding party held in Kedah on the next day.

And on October 25th, my parents and I will be flying to Kuching, Sarawak, for 3 nights. Of all states in Malaysia, I haven't traveled to Sarawak, the biggest state in Malaysia, yet, so I'm taking this chance.

Oh, and October 27th is my 25th birthday. (And yes, I'll be celebrating my birthday in Sarawak.)

Update: My parents corrected me during the trip, so I wasn't able to correct this journal. Actually, I don't go to Kuching on this 25th. Eid ul-Fitr is just around the corner now, though -- assuming that new moon occurs precisely as predicted by the moon observers, it's on September 20th -- so things should be back to normal by then.

Anyway, my parents and I may possibly be moving to a new house in Kedah somewhere in the middle of this October, or maybe on this November. Actually, we've already bought another house in Shah Alam, Selangor, and we were scheduled to move there on this December. However, my father recently got the news that he may be reinstated as a boss again, this time in Kedah, so we may have to move to Kedah instead on this October. No word about this yet, though. My father is still waiting for the letter of confirmation of his reinstatement. The move is only temporary, though: If everything goes well, we might stay there for only around 1-2 years. I shall update the news should there be more progress about this.

Another thing, I've been working my butt off on this animation I'm currently doing. It's just my fursona talking about animation itself, and it's meant to be my CV, should I plan to someday start seeking a job as an animator. The voicing is in English so that even my non-Malay-speaking fans can enjoy it, too, but also because some animation studios here required employees to have a good grasp of the English language. It utilizes several common Japanese animation techniques, mostly as experimentations. I'm not sure if animation studios in Malaysia would accept me for this, but it's not hurt to try, and I really want to promote more anime-inspired animation form in Malaysia. If you're interested to see how far I've been doing it, feel free to drop-by in MSN. (Y!M users may need to note me beforehand so I can also go online in Y!M, too, because I rarely use Y!M nowadays except for serious matters.) If it's finished, I could also upload it here in deviantART, too.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

I really was very depressed when I drew it. Joe: The Rise of Cobra yesterday. Awesome movie and anything , although that scene where they destroyed the Eiffel Tower (not a spoiler anymore because it's even in the official trailer) left me wondering if the producers had something against the French.

I remember the old days back when I was still a child when I used to watch this G.I. Joe cartoon series on TV, where rest can be assured that there will be no casualties (the, erm, laser bullets always miss! ), and the losing army is those who can't keep a straight face while laser bullets from the opposing army flew past them. It's a "who can stay their eyes open the longest" contest, except that lasers are involved! (I've read, though, that the comic series are significantly more violent, with deaths and anything.) I think the pulse guns shown in the movie are a direct reference to the laser guns in the cartoon series.

There's something that irked me, though: There's a huge scientific error occurred sometime within that movie. I'm not gonna say when that scene occurred, for spoiler reasons, but I'm gonna just say this: Ice don't sink! My father quickly pointed out that scene after that movie has ended. The only justification I can say is that they're actually not H2O ice, but heavy water (2H2O) ice. They look like water, smell like water, and even taste like water, but freeze them and drop one of these heavy water ice cubes into normal water, and they'll sink!

Well, besides that scientific error, it's a pretty okay movie, to say the least. Critics might hate this movie, though, much like they hated that new 2008 Speed Racer movie adaptation, although I seriously really enjoyed that movie.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

If you have not heard about this virus, also known as the "swine flu", then it's obvious that you've been living under a rock, because by now, everyone should've heard about it: the situation is global. But, here are links from Wikipedia, just in case: [link] [link]

In Malaysia, this virus is also sometimes colloquially called the "hee-nee virus", based from pronouncing "H1N1" like a word. So far, the situation in Malaysia is quite bad, with over 1300 confirmed positive cases, and 4 people already died from the virus. Some schools in Malaysia had to be closed down after it was discovered that some students were found to have been infected by the virus as well. The Health Ministry of Malaysia has even urged Malaysians to avoid close proximity with other people, even wearing a mask in public if suspected for having that flu in order to avoid spreading that virus onto others.

Today, I was at the Mid Valley Megamall as usual with my parents. I'm all too aware about this virus, thanks to my parents advising me how to avoid direct contact with everyone in the mall. Which is going to be difficult, because that mall is very crowded. So, I was minding my own business, when suddenly, someone sneezed right at me! I panicked. I quickly emptied my lungs from air, rushed away from him, and even flickered my hand over my face to fan away the air. It wasn't until 10 seconds later that I found a spot with less people on it that I finally take a deep breath again. I hope I don't get infected as well... If I do, I plan to visit the hospital immediately, even if it's just a common flu.

Well, I'm posting this in order to contribute letting more people aware of how serious this situation has...

... gotten... WAIT!!! Edit: Okay, after getting some seemingly-reassuring comments, now I'm confused. Instead of replying to these comments, I'll just put my answer right here.

I've just read some more details about the H1N1 strain. Apparently, it's not really that deadly at all, so people claimed now. People who got infected by it usually recover after a time. In fact, we ourselves may have been infected by it right now, only we don't realize it. It's just that the media exaggerated the news, which is what caused the mass panic.

I think the recalling of the 1918 "Spanish flu" pandemic -- of which over millions of people died -- may have been the cause of this worldwide panic. The culprit virus? The H1N1 strain. Deja vu.

Maybe people today has more immunity towards that H1N1 virus now... I mean, 91 years has passed since then!

Well, blame it on the media as well, exaggerating simple news like that. And my parents really, really believe the news...

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

To make it more challenging, he had refused to allow me to tell him hints of my IRL appearance, claiming that, this way, meeting each other for the first time will be a surprise. The only hints I've told him are that I can usually be found in the arcade room, that I like playing ParaParaParadise a lot, and that I always use a certain string of letters as my "arcade" nickname after getting a high score. (Hint: It's the initials of my IRL name.) This also made possible because it so happens that Phil was free on that Sunday, and my parents also happened to have decided to come on that very Sunday, so it's a lucky chance indeed.

He's exactly the kind of person I've expected, based from the way he typed his sentences during our MSN chats. He took me to a pet shop, and we talked about the various animals, birds and fish that was showcased there. The hamsters are darn so cute... Maybe that's why Hamtaro franchises are so popular. (He even mentioned that the gerbils there resembled my fursona, minus the tail. ) He was supposed to also take me to the bug section as well, but for some reason, that section was no longer there. (Maybe because it's a busy day for that pet shop on that time?) We've even discussed about the stuff we've usually talked about in MSN, though a bit limited because we're in public space.

Well, our meeting lasted for only 2 hours. (He had come just to see me.) But it was well worth it, really. If only we have more chance meetings like this.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

Before I begin, I wanted to say that I have nothing against the Arabic writing system at all, or any writing systems derived from Arabic, such as in this case, Jawi. Arabic is a beautiful script, that I agree. I often like writing my name in Arabic/Jawi: "مروان" Also, I can read Malay text written in the Jawi script, as all Malays had been mandated to learn Jawi so they can also read Arabic so that they can recite the holy Quran. However, because I'm far more used to the modern Romanized Malay script (known as "Rumi"), it took me up to 3-4 times the length of time it takes for me to read a Malay text written in Jawi than if written in Romanized Malay, because my brain was constantly busy figuring out the right vowels to use. Also, as always, what I've written here is purely my own opinions, and mine alone, so feel free to disagree.

So what is Jawi? Well, Jawi is an old form of writing system used to write the Malay language. It was lifted directly from that right-to-left, conjoined-letters Arabic writing system, with additional letters not found in Arabic. Historians agree that it was first used in around 1300, with the discovery of the Batu Bersurat Terengganu (Terengganu Inscription Stone), the first known earliest evidence of the spread of Islam in Malaya (then Malaysia). The Jawi script itself was strongly linked to the development of Islam in Malaya.

Nowadays, people barely use Jawi anymore, in favor for Rumi, the Romanized Malay script introduced by British settlers. (And people wonder why the number of people who read Utusan Melayu, currently the only newspaper in Malaysia that still uses the Jawi script, has dwindled.) Most Chinese and Tamil Malaysians can't even read Jawi at all. Recently, however, the Malaysian government is trying to largely promote the Jawi writing system, to keep that script from dying, promoting it as the "classical Malay writing system". But, really, the Malay language (and its derived dialects) was historically written in several scripts, such as Rencong (which I believed as the "true" classical Malay writing system), Rejang, Kawi and Pallava, which had existed long before the arrival of Islam in Malaya, but which are all now died out and no longer in use anymore.

About the Jawi script itself. Well, in my own opinion, Jawi is a terrible writing system. It's just not suitably tailor-made for the Malay language. The Malay language has 6 spoken vowels; this is represented by only 3 written vowels in Jawi, due to the fact that Arabic, the script it was based on, has only 3 vowels. As with Arabic, vowel letters are only used sparingly, so anyone who wanted to learn Jawi must memorize the correct vowels to pronounce on a word-by-word basis. In Arabic, vowel letters are used only to denote long vowels. The Malay language has no long vowels, so the use of vowel letters in Jawi are often quite unpredictable and are used mostly to avoid ambiguity between words that use the same consonants.

Spelling of some words in Jawi are not even fixed over the years, which is a nightmare for Jawi-Rumi dictionary authors. For example, the word "lima" ("five"). In Jawi, it's historically written like this: "ليم" However, this became a problem when they needed to transliterate a person's name, Lim, to Jawi, also written as "ليم". So what they did? They proposed to change the spelling of the word "lima" to "ليما".

I began to feel a strong antipathy against the Jawi writing system because the university I used to attend to is a major contributor in trying to promote the Jawi writing system. When I was at the end of the second-last semester, I was required to pick a topic from a list of pre-selected topics for my compulsory end-of-the-semester project. To my horror, over 70% of the topics are about developing software for teaching the Jawi writing system. I ended-up joining another friend to do this project for developing a software teaching kids about the Hajj, the gathering of all able-bodied Muslims to the Mecca, because I've been so desperate to pick a topic that has nothing to do with teaching Jawi. Originally written in Romanized Malay, the lecturers then forced her to change everything to Jawi, which gave her stress because she sucked in Jawi and had to consult with Jawi-literate experts to help her out. That is one attitude I don't like about us Malays: The assumption that Jawi must be related to...

The way I wrote the title is a hint, though.

I've seen Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince today. I understand that, like most novel-to-film transitions, there will gonna be some minor plot changes, and even entire subplots be removed for the sake of trimming down the feature length time. Well, remarkably, they still managed to maintain that novel's original twist ending, which is a very important plot point, anyway, that should not be removed.

And guess what? It didn't surprise me at all. I knew all along it's coming.

You can blame the Internet meme for this. Since the release of that original novel book, within only a few days, the plot twist instantly became a meme, spreading around the Internet like wildfire. It became so common that practically everyone knows how the sixth book would end by now, even those who had never read the novels before.

Call me a sucker, but I admit, I prefer waiting for the movies to come out first, because I like watching all the action in front of my eyes.

Sorry, I just needed to get that out of my head.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

There are multiple copies of this video scattering about in YouTube -- the link I've provided is what I've deduced as most likely the original source coming from the rightful owner (because it's slightly higher quality than the rest, and having the earliest upload date).

So, the story is that this kid's mother decided to cancel his World of Warcraft account. (He's probably a really, really bad kid... serves him right.) Upon finding out about this, he flips out like crazy. His brother, being a bully, decided to secretly videotape him becoming a werewolf (without the transformation) in his room. (Oh yeah, the most famous part is when he even attempts to shove a remote controller up his ass. OMG! )

Some people think that this video has gotta be fake, especially with that "remote controller" part. I don't blame them; I think it's because of that kid's outlandish reaction that's just unbelievable. Me, I'm not quite sure... It does look real to me, though.

As with other memes, this one got subjected to lots of YouTube poops, which shouldn't be hard to find.

Really, in my opinion, assuming that this video is real, both kids should oughta be ashamed of themselves: The kid in that video, because he needs to remember that WoW is just a freakin' game, and his brother, for bullying him like that.

In the end, the moral of the story is that we should never let ourselves become too addicted to games. Addiction is unhealthy. Never let it consume your entire life. Otherwise, you'd become just like that kid in the video.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

While waiting in line to buy some game tokens, I had a huge shock: A girl in front of me decided to pay RM100!

That's right, RM100 for 100 tokens, no less. RM100 wasted just for playing games all day long.

She even brought along a plastic bag, specifically instructing the vendor to fill it with those said tokens.

Where the hell did she get that RM100 banknote? I hope that she didn't steal it from her parents...

On that very moment, I thought to myself, what's gonna happen with today's youths? Unlike me, who only visits the arcade once every week, these teens get to visit the arcade every day! No wonder those Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3DX players there have like over 100,000km total progress mileage, while currently, I have only about 3900km mileage, even though I've visited that arcade for over a year.

If these teens are currently on the job or something, they better have a very high weekly salary, or all that money they got will be wasted for nothing but games. I recommend spending only 5% of your entire salary for games -- the lower the percentage, the better. Or better yet, don't even visit the arcade at all.

Parents should be monitoring their kids more often...

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

You feel hungry, so you see the first restaurant you can see that's nearest to you, and that happens to be KFC. You go in, and you place your order at the cashier for a regular Snack Plate meal.

Don't be surprised: The next question the cashier will ask is, "Do you want it original, or spicy?"

In fact, in many Asian countries like Malaysia (and possibly Middle Eastern countries, too), KFC offers the "Hot and Spicy", a version of the KFC chicken with extra pungent flavor. That's because pungent flavor (yes, that flavor that gives that "burning" feeling to your tongue) is an unusually popular flavor in many Asian countries, and so the Hot and Spicy chicken was made specifically to cater these tastes. The term "ori or spicy" has become a sort of meme in Malaysia, so much that the god-awfully terrible movie, Cicak-Man, uses it in one scene in a plot about human cloning (the "spicy" being the clones).

Of course, if you want the good ol' Original Recipe Chicken everyone loves, just say "original" to the cashier (duh).

McDonald's also strive to cater local tastes, too. See here and savor the long list of regional menus you'll never get to taste, due to not being in the countries specified. The Bubur Ayam McD (can be translated as "Chicken McPorridge") is very popular here.

Such globalization is important for fast food outlets to expand their empire to other countries, because all countries each will have different tastes and preferences, and to abide the country-specific laws and restrictions (such as having to prepare all foods as halal to attract the Muslim majority in Islamic countries, and no beef whatsoever in India). Some food outlets can resist such localizations and still be successful, but they'd probably won't be as successful apart from its country of origin.

Speaking of KFC again, in recent years, they even serve the Colonel Rice Combo, which probably meant to be KFC's interpretation of the nasi ayam, a popular dish in Malaysia.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link]
New song: Nikmatilah Detik Ini

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

According to the operator who was on duty at the time, there's nothing wrong with my Streamyx Internet connection... Huh? I kept insisting to him that, really, I can't connect to the Internet at all. I told him everything, down to my modem's serial number, and even the fact that my DSL modem's DSL light isn't on at all. (My father was still believing on that time that it must've been the modem that's broken... He even almost bought a new modem because of this.)

The service was crappy: The operator kept telling me to do irrelevant things like checking my Internet connection's ping, and try loading Google even though I'm clearly not connected to the Internet. I guess that, considering that the operator can't see my computer, it makes sense for the operators having to do these totally irrelevant things to their customers. And most Malaysians are IT-blind, so yeah.

In the end, the operator only needed to reset my account's Internet connection status. It worked: Now my modem's DSL light lit-up like a Christmas tree, indicating that I can connect to the Internet once more. I opened Google, and it loads. I opened deviantART as well (obviously!) and it loads, too. I guess that there was something wrong with my Internet connection status after all, something which even the operator can't see.

The fact that it occurred rather coincidentally to TM-Net's service upgrade during the month of May had caused much misunderstandings, and had caused some arguments within my family. Well, the very first clue that there's something wrong with my Internet connection in the first place is that our neighbor was also using Streamyx, too, and there was nothing wrong with their Internet at all...

My father blamed me for not being responsible enough to call the tech support in the first place. Again. Since last Saturday. (And everyone wonders why lots of Malaysians complained about TM-Net's buggy services.) This sucks, because I've just came out of depression after watching X-Men Beginnings: Wolverine, and I really needed to browse the Internet to amuse myself so I can feel better again.

I really, really hope that it's because TM-Net is currently performing upgrades to their Streamyx services. In case you're wondering how I'm able to post this entry, I'm using dial-up on my laptop, because my usual desktop computer doesn't have an internal dial-up modem, forcing me to use the laptop whenever I need to use dial-up for emergency reasons.

I'm really sorry for anyone who had been waiting for me for days to show-up in MSN.

Edit: Recently, my mother told me one possible reason why my usual broadband Internet connection is down: While she was traveling outside to buy lunch as usual, she saw a few workers repairing the phone line in our area. That might contribute to why my broadband connection is down at the moment. Still, it's not a stretch to assume that TM-Net's current upgrading of their services to also be the reason, too, and the presence of those workers may just be a coincidence. The official correct way to pronounce this value in Malay is "sepuluh ringgit", or "ten ringgits" in English, plain and simple. Some Malaysians, though, instead pronounced this as "sepuluh ringgit Malaysia" ("10 Malaysian ringgits"). I think it's because Brunei dollar is also called "ringgit" here... I think some Malaysians deliberately use the full name "Ringgit Malaysia" in order to distinguish it from "Ringgit Brunei" (Brunei dollars), so I can't exactly point this as a mistake. However, internationally, "ringgit" is widely understood to refer to the Malaysian ringgit alone, so there's no excuse why I think we should just say "sepuluh ringgit" alone in colloquial usage. (Also, in formal Malay usage, Brunei dollar is called "Dolar Brunei", anyway.)

What I do get pissed with, though, is when some idiotic Malaysians start pronouncing RM10.00 as "ar-em sepuluh ringgit". It's true that "RM" stands for "Ringgit Malaysia"; however, "RM" is also the official currency sign for ringgit, and should be treated as a single symbol, not two letters. "Ar-em sepuluh ringgit" in written form would be "R.M. RM10.00". See how silly that gets?

What's saddening is that even some professionals -- game show hosts, news reporters, etc. -- also used this incorrect way of pronouncing the Malaysian currency. My parents constantly like to mock people on TV who used this incorrect pronunciation.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link] I will be uploading another original song after this, soon.

Commission details: [link]

1. (Empty)
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

I've already changed that to the now-recommended port 587. However, while I can finally able to send e-mails again, it doesn't seem to work...

Apparently, because of the large amount of spam that came from my country using the "tm.net.my" domain circulated all around the world, many ISPs have placed that e-mail domain under their blacklist. Also, actually, it's been over 8 hours since we've returned home. I just decided to take a long break first prior to writing this entry.

Actually, it's because we were unhappy with the current circumstances. We were supposed to stay in this luxurious hotel we used to stay in around 16 years ago. Well, nothing can stop the change of time: We were a little shocked to learn that that hotel no longer exists anymore. The entire hotel complex was converted into a university. The hotel building itself had become largely unoccupied; now it has been turned into an apartment of sorts, each room owned by different individuals. When my parents saw that building which is what used to be a hotel, they felt deeply saddened. We had good memories within that hotel. From what we learned, the owner of that hotel faced bankruptcy in 2000, so he was forced to sell that building.

So, instead, we ended-up staying in another hotel, just a block away. This hotel was in a sad state. It's reception area is quite poorly-maintained, with lots of dust, holes in the ceiling, and even the elevator is broken since 2 months ago. It has only 50 rooms, but only 20 are open for the public -- The rest are reserved as dormitories for students from that neighboring university I've mentioned above. Well, luckily, the room we stayed in is quite nice, though. The toilet floors are a little dangerously too slippery, though.

At least, we managed to do exactly why we traveled to Malacca in the first place: To travel around Malacca, and to get to "know" it better by visiting historical places there, even paying a visit to the site of the well-known A Famosa fortress, a fortress built during the time when the Portuguese used to seize power over Malacca. (The well-known gate is all that's left of it today.) We even visited a museum there that lets us learn more about Malacca. They don't call Malacca "a historical state" for nothing: It has lots of history, as you can read here for more info for anyone interested: [link] [link]

Well, I should take a rest now.

----------

Please buy and download my song: [link] I will be uploading another original song after this, soon.

Commission details: [link]

1. Status: 75% (Sorry this is taking a little too long. )
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

It's currently my most favorite personal song I've ever written, and I always wanted to update it up to professional studio standards. The fact that I own FL Studio now made that possible. The catch? It's not for free.

You can get that updated song via [link] at its full 320kbps glory. Four fingers seemed to be far more common for animal characters, while five fingers are typically reserved for humans, although I've seen many cartoons on TV before with four-fingered human characters.

By now, you may have noticed that I've always drawn all of my own characters with five fingers. The reason? Simple: Forget about Disney saying that four fingers enable artists to draw hands with bigger and chubbier fingers, and all that stuff about why five fingers look plain "weird" for some cartoon characters. It actually started as an economical strategy. By reducing a single finger from each character's hands, animators would only have to deal with just the remaining four fingers, and thus able to animate faster. (Western animation puts more emphasis on faster, fluid animation, unlike Japanese anime, which puts more emphasis on as much character visual details as possible for each frames.) Somehow, this practice of drawing hands this way quickly got popular in the West.

The practice of drawing characters with only four fingers seemed to be quite rarer in Japan, however, even with made-for-kids funny animal characters. Sonic The Hedgehog has five fingers. Even Klonoa has five fingers as well. If you look closely, even Pikachu has five fingers, too! In fact, Zorori from the popular Japanese cartoon series, Kaiketsu Zorori, appeared to be the only exception I've seen so far (with only three fingers!).

I drew all of my characters with five fingers, because, well, we were born with five fingers. And it's also because it's my own preference, anyway, and I find five fingers appear more "correct" to my eyes compared to just four fingers. I admit, however, that it's also because if Klonoa has five fingers, then so should all of my own characters, especially Marwan. I don't believe in this economical crap.

Still, I allow everyone to draw my characters with only four fingers, if and only if they're just too used to drawing only four fingers -- It's a good thing that I'm an understanding person. Similarly, when it comes to drawing someone else's characters, if the artist had always drawn his/her own characters with only four fingers, then I'd draw them with only four fingers.

----------

Commission details: [link]

1. Status: 100%
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

Recently, after sometime thinking about it, I've finally opened a PayPal account for commission purposes.

Two months ago, I wrote a list of suggested prices I might take for every commissions I might do. Well, screw that. I realized that I gave the prices a little too high. Also, bear in mind that I do not work for linearts, so sketches and linearts mean the same thing to me.

Here are the final prices for now:

Sketches and linearts - $10 per character.
Full-color art - $30 per character. Add an additional $10 if you want me to add a realistic background characters can optionally interact with. (No charges for simple random backgrounds.)

Any payments can be made via PayPal by sending them to zanoma@tm.net.my.

I'm still new to this whole thing, so for now, I'll only allow a limited number of commission slots. Currently, I only accept the first three persons to request a commission from me.

Edit: Okay, after some advice from a friend of mine, I think I should mention why I suddenly wanted to start commissioning: Simple, I needed the money. (Don't we all?) In another few years, my father will be retiring from work... By then, it'll be my turn to support the family. I'm still currently a freelancer, and I'm not sure if, someday, I'm ready to endure everyday office life. (I've had bad experiences during my Industrial Training period, and I don't want to go through that again.)

Also, it has been partly a long-time dream of mine to start negotiating commissions with other artists. I admit, I really wanted to see how other artists depict my own characters, even if it means paying them to do so. So I needed to gather enough money so that I can afford to pay them a commission.

I decided to post commission slots so that everyone will know how many slots there are left (will be updated from time to time):

1. Status: 30%
2. (Empty)
3. (Empty)

Before I begin, I bet that some of you are aware that there will be a Nintendo Wii remake of Door to Phantomile, to be released in Japan on this December. Well, recently, I heard of a rumor that, for the Westernization of Klonoa (so I heard), they're planning to do a complete redesign of him, completely sacrificing the very trademark features of him which fans have loved and associated with: His trademark long doggy ears. (They even removed his blue PacMan cap, too, which is unacceptable for most Klonoa fans.)

One of the many news about this shocking rumor, complete with an image of the redesigned Klonoa: [link]

This picture by ~FoxTails (drawn 2 years ago!) exactly sums up my reaction:

So far, it's not finalized yet, and I heard that they are taking a survey and debating whether or not to go for the new design, or keep the old one. If they somehow did decide to change his ears in the end, then at least I hope that he can still be able to fly with them. My father was initially a bit paranoid after making the purchase, because this was our first time ever making an online purchase, and he was actually expecting for a "Verified by Visa" page to appear -- the debit card I'm using supports Visa payment method -- which didn't show up. I managed to convince him that deviantART is a legitimate trusted online community, though.

Anyway, I hope that this should be a good motivator for me to get myself drawing again. Thankfully, I've read about the various techniques Malaysians can do to bypass these restrictions, like withdrawing money and such.

At this moment, I still needed to discuss with my parents a bit regarding how I'd gonna able to use PayPal and the strategies I'd be doing when it comes to commissioning.
To this day, many Malaysians still refused to believe that there is already another skyscraper in Taiwan (the Taipei 101) that towers over the Petronas Twin Towers, the previous record holder for being the tallest building(s) in the world. Yeah, really. Ask a Malaysian what is the tallest building in the world, and they'll still insist that it's the Petronas Twin Towers. Petronas Twin Towers are currently one (make that two) of the most recognizable landmarks of Malaysia, and have become symbolic to Malaysia itself. The building of these twin skyscrapers is one of Malaysia's greatest achievements ever, which is why every single Malaysians are proud of this achievement.

In fact, Malaysia has had a long-time obsession for gaining as many great achievements as possible, to prove to the rest of the world that, yes, we do exist, yes, there is indeed such a thing as a country called Malaysia, yes, our pride for our country is strong, and yes, we are as capable of doing anything as well as other more advanced countries can. Formerly a nation living within the shadows of its more well-known neighbors like Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, we have been constantly struggling at earning a voice to mark our presence to the world. That's why, every time Malaysia achieved yet another great achievement, however mundane it may sound to the more advanced countries out there, Malaysia would proudly cheer for these achievements. Things like, for example, our very own MMORPG (Fung Wan Online, anyone?), and our very own cartoon and 3D animation series. And recently, I heard that a team of Malaysian developers were involved in developing this racing game called Race Driver: GRID, Malaysia's first involvement ever in developing a next-gen console game.

I wonder, are we just being too proud for our own good? Are we merely being a big show-off? I see nothing wrong with outwardly expressing our pride for being a Malaysian, but I'll let you people tell me what you think. I wanted to post this journal entry during August 31st, Malaysia's 51st Independence Day, to set the patriotic mood of this entry, but I wasn't able to. Oh well, at least I managed to get it posted.

I've written this text about a week ago. However, I wasn't so sure whether or not I want to post this, because I don't want to talk about anime too often, after which I discussed about it too much in the past. But, oh well, you never know until you try.

Before I begin, I would like to beg anyone reading this entry: Please be mindful that these are all my own opinions alone. You may go ahead and disagree with me, but please, don't argue with me about how wrong I am; I will not listen to your pathetic rants just because of my way of thinking. I only wished to have an intelligent, constructive discussion regarding this issue of anime's status as to the world.

To this day, many, many anime fans around the world have hard-wired in their brains that only Japan ever produces anime series. Attempts to argue with these fans only sprout even more arguements, which can get pretty nasty. I'm trying to explain this situation in a more mature manner, not in an insulting way.

There's a good reason why I hate the terms "anime-inspired animation" or "pseudo-anime" whenever they are mentioned. It implied that just because an anime series was not made in Japan is not an anime series by right definition. They're racist and discriminating terms against the rest of the world who tried so much effort in proving that they, too, have the right capabilities to produce animations in the same manner as that of Japan. With the rising popularity of anime in the rest of the world, this is inevitable; seeing the success of anime, other countries will want to also produce their very own indigenous anime series to meet the rising demands of the fans.

Let's face it: Anime is no longer unique to just Japan anymore.

Currently, South Korea is the only other country in the world known for producing anime series at a regular basis, besides Japan. Their methods of animation are almost identical, so much that if it wasn't for Korean text plastered everywhere around a series in place where Japanese text would've been, it has the potential to fool a person into thinking that it was animated in Japan, when it's not. In fact, many Japanese anime production companies in the past even hired Korean animators to cut the cost of animation budget, which is probably how the Koreans got their anime animation skills from.

But why so many Korean anime series remained largely unheard of in the rest of the world? I have some multiple theories. Unlike Japan, many Korean anime series are targeted for kids, in the same manner as American animation are. South Korea probably doesn't see much that their own indigenous anime series could be marketable to the rest of the world, so many of their anime series remain targeted exclusively to the South Korean market. Also, there are even fewer foreigners who are serious at learning Korean than Japanese, so fansubbing Korean anime series may have been proven impractical.

And recently, I found out that China has also successfully produced their very own anime series, too: "Chinese Chess Master" ("象棋王"). The first episode have been subbed to English and the first part of it can be watched here: [link]

I'm not trying to say that anime had begun to lose its uniqueness anymore, just because other countries had also begun to join the bandwagon. To me, it helps ensuring that this unique artform has the chance to last even longer in this century.

When Malaysians hear the word "Maxis", they think of a completely different company: Maxis Communications Berhad, a leading cellphone provider in Malaysia. This can lead to some amusing confusements, especially because both companies are similarly called "Maxis".

I'm surprised that, to date, no legal action for name copyright infringement ever occured. That, or American laws just can't reach here.

Companies with similar or identical names can be confusing indeed...

This became a long-time partial pet-peeve of mine since many months ago, and after some discussion with ~Axe-Canabrava about it, he finally encoraged me to post this entry.

It's a very common cliché in many fantasy and science fiction movies/TV series/children's animated shows/and so on. You have an entire race of bad people whose sole reason they even existed in that show is for the "good" race to fight against. The classic "good race vs. evil race" scenario. I couldn't able to describe this more clearly, so instead, I'd point out this page: [link]

In my opinion, for the case with children's shows, this was probably done because children are still too young to tell apart the difference between good and evil, so this was necessary to make it easier for kids to know which side they were supposed to cheer for. However, this doesn't stop me from keep thinking of the implied racism for this, even though both races are fictional.

The reason why I don't like this concept is because it makes it appear nigh impossible for a character to be able to switch sides between good and evil. It seemed that when you were born of one race, you can only able to grow up siding for that race alone. Should I write a story like this someday, I would prefer to separate these groups as factions, not races.

At least, it's a good thing that some writers acknowledged this fact, and tried to break the stereotype by including at least one or a few characters belonging from the "evil" race, but joined forces with the good side. (Or its reverse variety, a character from the "good" race joined forces with the evil side.)

Edit: I got a feeling that lots of my watchers would skip this journal entry, simply because the title makes them think that this is a Malay journal entry. I edited the title to make it clear that the content is actually in English.

The title of this journal entry is actually quite untranslatable to English without a visual context. If translated anyway, it'll end-up becoming "the heart (mind) of my heart (organ)". Or, erroneously, "the heart of my liver".

Malay and Indonesian are two of the few languages in the world (including Japanese, Hebrew, Egyptian, etc.) where we actually use two different words for two different ideas where English speakers would use the single word "heart" for both. Those words are:

"Jantung" -- The beating, pumping organ in the body.
"Hati" -- A person's inner feelings, the mind.

To make matters even worse, the word "hati" is also used to describe another organ in the human body, too: the liver.

This can be a huge problem when we had to translate a literature from English, especially when the word "heart" was used in a slight pun like this quote from The Corpse Bride: "Tell me my dear, can a heart still break even when it stops beating?" Oftentimes, the only option is to treat the word "hati" as being the same meaning as the word "jantung", leading to phrases like "degupan hatiku" (literally "my liver is pounding"). Sure, it's an incorrect usage, but that's the only option we have.

I did a little research. The ancient Malay people regarded the liver, not the heart, as the seat of all emotion. The liver governs the rest of the body, much like a ruler governs his army. The association of the heart as the root of all emotion seemed to have stemmed from European traditions. It can be interesting to see how much our wildly different traditions can really affect our current use of language today.

I often like to call the liver "organ hati" (literally "liver organ") as an effort in order to avoid confusion with what I mean.

Oh well... At least, it did gives us a really good pun, like the time when my parents and I went to China, a Chinese doctor there with shockingly awesome Malay language skills while lecturing to us uses the word "sakit hati" at one time. Everyone laughed. He was actually referring to liver disease on that time, but this very same sentence also means "broken heart" (and he's fully aware of it, being a joker he is).

Some few months ago, I showed my current comic, "My First Crush", to a friend of mine IRL. Her first reaction is that she wondered, why didn't my comic have more or less much the same amount of aesthetic detail as those many several Japanese manga she read? This notion made me felt sad, because she was essentially comparing my comic with the more professionally-produced Japanese manga written by professional artists, which is always a bad idea.

See, the truth is that, this is the consequence for having to do the comic all by myself. Most comic artists working in the professional field typically employs a number of assistants to work on the same comic page. Not only this will result in a comic that may be more professionally-looking, it also helps reducing the time it takes to finish each comic pages, which is important for meeting tight deadlines.

I'm aware that I'm not the best artist there is, and I don't like to pretend like I am one. When I work on my comics, I try to think of only one thing: The story is more important. No matter how aesthetically pleasing the storytelling medium may be, without a good story, it will suck. I try to focus more on the story than having to waste many hours just to apply a cool-looking effect for the sake of applying that cool-looking effect alone. I'm trying to tell a story here, and the storytelling medium should not be abused to the max solely to show-off the ultra-awesome effects and so on.

Yes, I know that visual aesthetics are also still important as well -- After all, who would want to read a comic about stick figures? (Maybe some people do.) There should be a proper balance between the underlying story and the overall visuals used to convey the story. If too much visual aesthetics are used, it might only make the story more confusing than it should be. Special visual effects should only be used when appropriate, and only when that scene specifically calls for one.

The point is that I want to tell a legitimate story here, and manga is just yet another storytelling medium I used to convey my story.

Correctly conveying emotions through facial expressions must have been one of the many most challenging feats an artist must face. Here is my thoughts about this particular issue. Human facial expression is quite complex. Just subtly changing even a single line on the face is enough to alter the entire emotion conveyed. An artist wishing to draw a character's face would need to study and practice how to properly convey every single emotions of that particularly given character. It can take some time to get it right.

Of course, the most expert artists have the ability to recreate every single nuisances of the human face. These are typically artists working professionally in a field where a high degree of realism is required, such as 3D movies, "serious" graphic novels, and so on.

Others, like me, would rather follow a "shortcut" -- This is often used a lot among toon artists and almost every manga cartoonists and in anime series imaginable. It is understandable that conveying a character's facial expression is not an easy task, therefore realism is often disregarded completely; the face is stretched to unrealistic proportions to convey an otherwise too-complex-to-be-drawn expression. The eyes are often the most stretched of all: they can expand or contract, morph into a dollar sign, pink hearts, or if that character is dizzy, spirals. Such usage are usually limited to more comedic situations. In more serious situations, it's still important to at least study correctly how to draw expressions more realistically.

A good way to practice drawing a character's various facial expression is to draw out a huge list of possible expressions for a given character, even the ones the character would least likely use. Generally, I rarely do this myself, but for cartoonists just starting to draw faces correctly, that's my advice to y'all.

Looking back, my current art abilities appeared to have not changed much since 2006. Now, I know that while I have improved a lot in many areas (like body anatomy, for example), in terms of style, many of my art since 2006 have remained relatively the same.

This is deliberate.

Until I can finally able to do commissions in any way possible, when it comes to doing giftarts, other than body anatomy and character designs, I have intentionally held-back my artistic abilities from growing further. I felt that I have reached a certain point where I really should finally make money out of my artistic talents. Unfortunately, my current situation makes this impossible. I hope that you don't mind about this.

I'm not sure when my parents will ever finally give me the privilege to able to send or receive money online. They have promised me since 1999 to give me an Internet-able bank account someday "when I grow up". Well, I've grown-up, and I still don't have a bank account of my own yet. I blame those unknown Internet money robbers, who were once able to stole a huge sum of money from my father's bank account.

To this day, I'm still uncertain about whether or not to register for PayPal. I know that I'm in a disadvantage now, as a lot of services nowadays are offered in PayPal only, but until they've given Malaysia the privilege to draw money from our country's own banks, I'd rather wait until they someday do, or having to convince my parents so that they don't mind having to travel to Singapore just to draw out money from PayPal (like that would ever happen).

A year ago, I have reoffered a subscription-based commission, allowing me to receive 1-month subscriptions in exchange for every picture requests I've drawn for people. This was also done so that I can be motivated to upload more images into my DA gallery. Well, to this day, that offer is still open. However, no one has considered doing this sort of commission with me yet. (Years back, though, one person did offer me one, but I politely asked her to wait until a year later, because I already have a 1-year subscription then, offered by a kind friend. When my subscription did expire a year later, though, I tried contacting her again, only to discover that she's no longer a DA member anymore. )

Sorry about having to rant about this. That doesn't mean I would not try to improve my drawing skills to the better; it's just that I don't want my drawing skills to be left unrewarded. Also, unlike those snobbish popular artists out there who refused to draw unless they got paid, be thankful that at least I still enjoy doing giftarts for everyone.

While at the mall a few days ago, my parents and I looked at one of those mall Santas sitting upon a line of children waiting for their turn. As I stared at the scene, I said to my parents, "You know what, I think I do kinda felt sorry for Santa. It must've been so hard for that jolly guy; I mean, every day, he had to read entire lists of things kids who are very good this year wants for Christmas. And after that, he'll have to ride on his sleigh, sending presents to every houses of those said children. Imagine that!" We laughed.

A year ago, I formed a theory as to why we grown-ups don't believe that Santa Clause ever existed: After delivering presents to children in their houses, right before exiting through the chimney, he would conjure a little magic: If a person no longer believes in Santa Clause anymore, or if a child has grown-up, then memories of whatever happened that night during Santa's visit is erased, as if nothing ever happened then. In addition, it also makes parents believed that it was them all along who bought these presents to their kids. Of course, to keep the spirit alive for their kids, they'll have to pretend as if they know that it was Santa who bought these presents, anyway.

Just something I've been thinking recently. Consider the following situation: Someone decided that he felt bored with the current design of his character, and it's time for him to redesign him, totally changing his looks. The redesign can be minor or major, from simply changing certain aspects of his body, to altering the species altogether. Problem is, you opposed this change: You still prefer the original design. What would you do?

I had to face this unpleasant fact a few times before. The most difficult thing for me to do is to at least try to respect their decision and get along with it, even though I hated it. After all, it's their character, not mine, and therefore, they have the right to redesign their character in many ways they see fit. Worse, it sometimes occurs at the wrong time: I was just about to think of doing a giftart for someone featuring her character, when that is when she suddenly decided to change that character's design altogether.

As for vice versa, I had arguments before against some people who still liked my fursona's past designs. For example, my decision to change his feet design caused a few of my friends to oppose this change, and this prompted me to write a short blog entry about it to explain everything: [link] The reason why I originally drawn him with humanoid legs back then is because I can't draw digitigrade feet properly yet on that time. If I can earlier, I would've used that leg design right from the beginning.

What do you people think? Of course, it is inevitable that all characters change over time, often tied with that person's current drawing abilities.

Edit: To those of you who still remember that list of 10 chibi requests I collected 3 months ago, I'm sorry. Actually, I'm still consider doing it; it's just that I got so wrapped-up with my work at the moment, I used-up a huge part of my free time to chill-out and taking a break from doing anything. So I hardly able to get to draw any new pictures at the moment, except maybe on Sundays. Oh, and for those 11th and 12th repliers of that chibi request, don't worry: Because you're both close friends of mine, I'll make an exception of that rule for you both.

Okay, I bet that some of you must've been wondering why I'm rather slow at updating nowadays. Well, I'm making a living now! Actually, not quite, but almost. I'm currently under my university's industrial training. It's when students who have passed all university subjects get to feel what it's like to be in a typical working condition, working in a company of their choice, for about 4 months. The only "salary" we'd be getting at the moment is the final overall industrial training marks, at the end of our training.

For the industrial training, I have chosen to work in the very same university I was a student in. (Right now, I'm still wondering where I'd work in next after my industrial training period has ended.) Remember that short animation in my gallery about I said that I "suck at animation"? Well, times have changed. Not really that über-leet at animating, but just enough to impress everyone in my area. Considering that Malaysia is still currently not that advanced yet when it comes to animation compared to other countries, even a simple animation consisting of just looping 10 frames is already considered impressive here.

Because I can animate, right now, they've given me the task to do all these animation work for a certain educational software, doing animated illustrations, using Flash to do all these animations. It's an educational software for kids about the Jawi writing system, a modified Arabic writing system which, in the past, was the Malay language's dominant writing system, until the British settlers start introducing us the Latin writing system for our language, which has replaced Jawi since. My university happens to be one of the most active Jawi promoters, trying to promote its everyday practical use and keep the writing system from dying out.

These animated illustrations don't require that much detailed animation work at all, so these animation tasks I've done are pretty simple and require little effort. At one point, I've able to finish up to 3 animations within just 5 hours -- Impressive, considering that I did everything 100% using just the mouse alone. Few other, slightly more complicated, animated illustrations I had to do did take more than a day to finish, though.

Okay. Well, I decided to take that animation work opportunity as a sort of "practice" for me to hone my animation skills for the better. Right now, recently, I finally got back into getting interested with M.U.G.E.N. again, and at the moment, I'm working on the animation stage of my very first M.U.G.E.N. character. I had to wait up to 5-6 years before my animation skills have matured enough for this! 6 years is also way too long too late... and yes, I recently heard about that tragic news that one of the most well-known M.U.G.E.N. animators died recently just a week ago, which is quite sad.

Regarding the office I'm working in right now... The computers here appear to be better-maintained than the ones in the computer labs which students use. We even have full direct Internet access here. (In fact, I was typing all these while sitting in the office. ) Though, the firewalls pissed me off. They blocked some websites -- in fact, deviantART used to be among the websites being blocked until very recently -- and whenever I browse websites with profanity in them, they changed al...

The truth is that I don't want to have to rant about this again. In fact, I've ranted about people's view of "anime" in general so many times (mostly among friends) that I got very bored and tired of it. But the anime stereotype is recently getting more and more worse nowadays, and I felt the need to voice out my opinion regarding anime again.
Years ago, I did a few rants before regarding the anime fandom, how its distinctive style alone attracted so many fans, and how this contributed to increasing Japan's already-powerful global entertainment industry. Well, I was younger back then, so I was driven with extreme envy and disappointment with why Japan got all the credit, while American animation lacked that same credit, and only makes matters worse when they, too, decided to join the "anime style" bandwagon. I just don't get it. This is discrimination, as well as being balatantly racist. These hostility and discrimination among the anime community are one of the many reasons why I'm no longer a "true" anime fan anymore.

I think it's rather unfair. Now that I'm more older and wiser, I'll try to sum up with what I believed in in an optimistic way. Anime is a style, not a genre. I balked with today's definition of "anime", which is too often all about unrealistically huge eyes, face faults, super-deformed "chibis", giant robots, and even hentai (especially those huge eyes).

That's why I've stated before many years ago that I don't like calling my drawings as "anime". I want to distant myself from that modern definition of "anime" as much as possible. In fact, my own style actually leans even more towards the post-Tezuka tradition, rather than this twisted definition invented by Westerners. I always try to keep the most abused and prevalent clichés in anime (like the infamous sweatdrop) as minimum as possible, even integrating American cartoon conventions in my drawings where suitable. In addition, I even refined the style a bit in order to better fit with my cartooning preferences. I want to develop my own style, too, and I think I've found it.

September 11th is getting very close now, and already I'm able to predict that that day will soon be overwhelmed with lots of those documentaries about that fateful 9/11 attack. Based from how Americans still expressing their grief, even to this day from the attack, and considering how powerful that country is, I don't think it'll gonna die out for another millenia, unlike the more recent December 26th 2004 Southeast Asia natural disaster, which claimed more lives, but many of us have forgotten about it now.

A few weeks after the attack back then, when I was still a school student, I accidently read this Malay-language article about the attack, from a magazine a classmate sneaked into the class. It was very controversial, and the choice of wording the author wrote is quite disturbing and gave me the chills. (Warning: The following explanations might offend some Americans.) This author clearly hates the United States with a passion. He demonized the country, calling them "devils" and such, and even dared to claim that America just smirked when it comes to concerning poorer countries with people dying from starvation and diseases and what to do to help them.

Then, when the United States did finally got itself under fire as the 9/11 attack happened, the author responded in a line of "serves them damn right!", mocking the country, saying "cry-baby" with insults and all those stuff. I couldn't bring myself to talk any further about this.

Let's just end this, and I'll give my condolences to whoever those 3000 victims are.

I'm planning to do a large picture someday. The theme of this picture will be about global peace, and it will be decorated with the words "peace" in several languages as much as I can find. The idea is to write those words "peace" in different languages, keeping the same calligraphy style throughout the picture, regardless of the writing system. The same constant calligraphy style is to show that "all men are equal". Right now, though, it's important for me to concerntrate more on my university matters, so expect this image to finish at a later time.

Well, instead of giving up, I decided to waste another half an hour of my life rewriting this entire entry all over again, with at least 95% as identical as with the original entry. Thank god for my extremely good memory. )

Believe it or not, every day, I always constantly practice the pronunciation of the word "can't", as in that American English pronunciation, as well as distinguishing the difference between "can" and "can't". As a non-native English speaker who had for years been taught British English, I felt that it is important for me to learn American English, too, considering that it's getting far more being used nowadays, especially with the current global dominant power that is the United States.

Everyone knows that there are a few differences between American English and British English. That includes the pronunciation of certain words, such as "can't", which is what I'm discussing right now.

The main problem arises when it comes to Malaysians having to distinguish between "can" and "can't", as in the American English pronunciation. In the Malay language, there is no final "nt" sound. When a word has to be loaned into Malay, it'll need to be slightly modified in order to fit with the pronunciation rules of Malay. (Same with any other languages.) The final "nt" sound, in this case, is subtituted to just "n". For example, "restaurant" becomes "restoran", "militant" becomes "militan", "president" becomes "presiden", etc..

That is not a problem for Malaysians, because we were taught in the British dialect, to begin with. The British English pronunciation of the word "can't" is "cun't", which, unfortunately, also sounded as a very close homonymn of that vulgar word... (No wonder we were made fun of! ) Nevertheless, Malaysians can tell the difference better in British English, because the difference is the vowel sound itself.

The real problem arises when we have to listen to an American speaker speaking the word "can't". Malaysians who are not that well-educated in American English would fail to pick up that (very subtle) final "nt" sound, resulting in confusements, such as "You can't do that!" would be mistaken for "You can do that!" to them. (Some of us have to rely on context to get exactly which word they actually use.)

An alternate would've just to use "cannot" instead. However, that word is getting less used nowadays...

And that is all for my random ramblings for now.

Thought I'd write this for people's interest...

My full name is Marwan bin Mohd. Zahari. The "bin" part simply has a sense of meaning "son of" in Arabic naming convention. (The female counterpart is "binti", which means "daughter of".) Malay Malaysians don't have family names: "Mohd. Zahari" is actually my father's name. See this page for more details: [link]

Online, I often drop the "bin" part when writing my own name. This is for two reasons: One, most Malays nowadays often drop the "bin"/"binti" part when writing their own names. (Could be due to Western influence.) And two, to this day, I'm still quite affected by the 9/11 attack. Since then, I still have a phobia of including "bin" in my name online, since I don't want to make people think of Osama bin Laden...

"Mohd." is actually an abbreviation of "Mohammed", after the prophet. The majority of male Malays have "Mohammed" as part of their names, and since "Mohammed" is quite a long name, it is often abbreviated to just "Mohd." to save writing time. (Unless, however, if "Mohammed" is their sole name, in which it must be written in full (with spelling "Muhammad").) Once, while in Italy en-route for a flight to Austria, a woman whose job is to call the names of boarding passengers addressed my father as "Mode Zahari". I forgive her, since outside Malaysia, barely anyone knows Malaysia's own Arabic naming convention.

I'm aware that, in American newspaper article conventions, everyone are referred by their last names, even if that isn't their family name. Maybe this is because too many people have the same first names there. I wouldn't mind if they had to call me "bin Mohd. Zahari" or just "Mohd. Zahari" or "Zahari", since that's how their system works, anyway.
