As those of you who actually follow this journal know, we recently lost a beloved family member: Daisy Mae, my dad's dog and best friend for 13 years.

While time is starting to heal over the wounds, it can't cover up one thing: my grandmother's home now echoes without a dog around. It's just not complete.

Therefore, my dad took steps in finding another dog, not so much as a direct replacement for Daisy as it was just to have a dog, any dog, around. That's when he found Casey.

Casey is a bichon-shitzu mutt who wasn't living in the best of circumstances. No abuse or anything, it's just that his owner is out of the house for great chunks of time, which leaves Casey on his own frequently. Considering how my dad is a homebody having to watch over Grandma, plus all the homecare workers that visit on a regular basis, Casey's gone from minimal human contact to overload

He's been living at my dad's for a week now, and he's been growing on Dad a fair bit. Despite being left alone so much Casey is ridiculously well-behaved (much better behaved than Derby and Sasha, embarrassingly enough), though when Grandma feels like being fussy she likes to complain his breath is terrible (a valid point, but still). Not sure if Dad's decided on whether to hold onto Casey for now, but I suspect it's quite likely.

One thing that might tip the scales in that direction is the incident that happened yesterday. Dad was puttering around in the basement when he heard a crash upstairs, but when he came up to investigate he couldn't find the source. Then he went into the living room and found a perfect ovoid crack in the window. Stepping outside he found a rather confused raven (not a crow, a full-sized raven) tottering off, grumbling to itself about its newfound migraine.

Dad decided to poll his friends on Facebook and ask if there was any potential signifigance to the incident. A Native friend commented "A raven, eh? Lots of spirituality there... could mean that something's come full-circle in your life... then again he could have just gotten hammered eating fermenting apples in your backyard ". Another of his friends followed up on that, pointing out the full-circle may apply to Dad having a dog in his life again. Something to think about...

So yeah, last few weeks have not been kind for me, but the great thing about the past is once it's over, it's over. So it's time to pull myself back on track

Things are already off to a fresh start: this morning I had the last of 6 dental appointments over the course of two weeks to fix the stupid amount of neglect my teeth have suffered Bottom right side of my face is still numb and the worked-over teeth are a bit tender, but that will fade and I look forward to not having a trainwreck for a smile. The whole ordeal was hideously expensive, but my mother agreed that something had to be done and done now.

And hopefully my now-winning smile will come in handy at job interviews as I try to get back to job hunting with my now properly updated resume. While I could go back and re-apply at places I've already tried, I doubt admitting "Whoops, made a hilariously stupid error on that resume I gave you, here, have the correct version" will go over well

Even better, hooking up with my computer-genius pal and our mutual friend who sold me my comp in the first place to see Zombieland on the morrow. Hopefully afterward I can pick their brains (pun not intended) on how to get the old boy back to 100%

In the last few weeks I've had to embark on an emergency roadtrip to Calgary, my dad had to pay a visit to the emergency room, and more. I'd love to go into detail about all of this, but there's not much point, because Deviantart won't show this friggin' journal until it feels like it How could this be such a big problem it's taken more than a week to fix? (Seriously, if any admin reading this feels like explaining what all is involved to my uneducated ass, I'd appreciate it).

So yeah, not exactly a perfect ray of sunshine right now.

In the time since my last edit, my computer died, a beloved family friend whom I treated like a third grandfather died, and Daisy, my dad's pet and best friend, died. Seriously, where the fuck did it go?

Anyway, things have been slow-paced but decent. Working on getting my sleeping habits improved and start moving my diet in a healthy direction. I refuse to be one of those people who goes around freaking out if something they eat might have a hint of sugar or carbohydrates. I'll be damned if I give up stuff like pasta entirely

So yeah, on the road to self improvement but taking it slowly. Trying to juggle multiple goals will just invite them to all come crashing down on your head, which is as disasterous as if you were juggling chainsaws

Also making headway on writing. Recently a yarn that I wasn't sure what to do with has opened the floodgates and I've been delighted to hammer it into form. Expect to see it posted up in a day or two.

And is it just me, or has dA been misbehaving lately? It refuses to update my devwatch and brings back stuff I've already deleted. Be nice if they could get their act together...

So yeah, lately my collection of non-CoH games has quadrupled in size Now sitting alongside my beloved stress-relieving splatterfest Painkiller, I finally got around to re-installing Portal (which I still need to finish someday... yes I can be that apathetic), plus two new additions: Republic Commando (A game I've had my eye on for ages) and the demo for Batman: Arkham Asylum. OMG do I want that game for PC pronto. Not only is it incredibly good-looking, not only does it cater to comic geeks extensively, but the gameplay is just so damn unique... basically, instead of forcing Batman into one of the many typical game genres, they bent the genres to fit the Batman. Because he can breathe in space.

I just wish the PC version was out already

Recently I was at my grandmother's place while my father went out to have a much-needed evening with friends. Flipping through channels to my surprise and delight I found that Spike TV, recognizing that nerds count as guys too, was broadcasting The Empire Strikes Back. On the off chance you didn't know, I have been a devoted Warsie for almost all my life (well, up until shortly after Episode 3 came out) and it's all because my mother, looking for some background noise, popped in the tape while my two-year-old self was in the living room. I was hooked.

As I propped up my feet and watched, I started to think. Think about how, even though George Lucas has made two attempts to improve the film, there were things that could make it better. I won't go nerd rambling and bore you with the details, but think of this: Before the Battle of Hoth sequence, wouldn't it have been nice to have a scene where in the background you can clearly see a speeder hauling cargo on a hoverbarge or whatever, as a way of explaining why these combat aircraft conveniently have rear-mounted tow cables? Instead, we get the ominous, edgy voice of Jason Wingreen for Boba Fett replaced with Temura Morrison (who's a cool guy, don't get me wrong) delivering them flatter than a roadkilled rodent. Sigh... Guess this is what happens when you visit stuff you LOVED as a kid with actual experience and knowledge under your belt.

Anyway, doing alright. My birthday was nice and boring like I wanted, got a few things I needed, and cake. Delicious, moist, non-lie cake. Also recently visited my psychologist to get caught up with each other, and now I have vowed to resolve my sleep issues. Sadly, this involves staying awake for *gasp* the entire day, and we don't have much caffiene in the house Still, I figure if I can kill this problem, all the other difficulties in my life will follow and fall. Getting my hopeless ass onto something that even resembles the right track is something to shoot for and is strong motivation. So yeah, here's hoping, eh?

Yeah, it's going to be my 24th birthday on the 6th. I don't buy into the dreading-getting-older bunk, but I've found myself rather apathetic towards the whole thing. I guess the road trip hogged all my anticipation and eagerness, or something. So, feel free to make a big deal out of it, because I won't

Dunno if this is related or not, but lately my stack of comic books yet to be read is getting bigger and bigger. I don't know why I'm apathetic and hesitant -maybe even a little nervous- to go through them, but the running theory right now is that my brain isn't willing to commit to the literary analysis and dissection that comes from reading a well-written story. "Sorry, brain can't handle that much awesome right now, put down the Simone comic and back away slowly." Hopefully it'll recede once my overall mood improves, but no sign of when that's going to happen, either. In the meantime, the unread stack is about a handspan tall and growing...



Oh, and for all my fellow CoHers out there, Sunday night I forwent sleep to put the finishing touches on my first Mission Architect Story Arc. It's entitled Dragonslayers, and it's a fairly easy 5-mission romp starring good old Angie. Think I'm going to keep tweaking things and adding things like more clues as I think of them, but feel free to give it a run-through and tell me what you think.

So yeah, since the screaming masses demanded an update ( ) here's how the epic roadtrip of epic went. Day one saw us off to a good start as we visited a friend of my dad's and his three hilarious dogs, followed later on by a kickass small town meal, before we finally made it to Lethbridge.

Day two had us sleeping in a bit before going down to the airport for the airshow. There we were treated to things like a B-52 flyover, an A-10 Warthog practically dancing through the sky, a wing-walking act ( [link] ) that even left the announcer going "Holy shit", and more assorted awesomeness I can't remember off the top of my head. Oh, and sunburn. Lots of sunburn After the show we stumpered (a hybrid of stagger and stumble) back to the hotel, then visited the nearest pharmacy for some industrial-strength Lanacaine to deal with the burns. Once that was settled we hopped over to a nearby Italian restaurant and ate like kings, then toddled back to the hotel to prepare for the trek back.

Hauling ass out of Lethbridge we stuck to secondary highways, seeing more of the gorgeous countryside as we made a holy pilgrimage to the Mecca of geekdom: Vulcan ( [link] ). After getting the obligatory photos and browsing the gift shop for awhile we got back on the road, passing through more small communities and seeing more gorgeous landscape en route to our final stop on our trek: Drumheller. For those of you who don't know, the Drumheller valley is probably my favorite spot on the planet. The fact I was long overdue for a visit made coming there all the better.

We hit the Royal Tyrell Museum, where I was thrilled to see the improvements they've made since my last visit. Less thrilling was that the place was packed and thus was sweltering Then there were the swarms of little kids running around underfoot, but seeing as I was once one of those little kids, I had more patience for them. After elbowing our way through the gift shop we set out to do one last thing: visit my old pal Fred: [link] . Fred and I go way back, but it's a long story and this journal is getting big enough as it is.

So yeah, that was my weekend in a rather large nutshell. As for getting back into the daily groove... eh. The two people whose characters I'm using seem to be incommunicado, and I'm spending a bit too much time in the basement. Ah well, I'll work something out.

Yep, for awhile now my father and I plotted to drive allll the way down to Lethbridge to catch the Alberta International Airshow: [link] Dad's always been a huge aviation nut, so of course he wanted to go, and I figured I might as well keep him company and see some kickass stuff while I'm at it. As a bonus we plan on swinging over to Drumheller on the way back. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Drumheller is more or less the holy land for dinosaur enthusiasts, especially with the Royal Tyrell Museum. While my family made it a frequent summer vacation spot when I was little, I haven't been there in years. Needless to say, this is gonna rock hard. I'll be back Sunday evening, and I intend to bring plenty of pics with me

In other news, I got off my ass and toyed around with the arrange-a-page option here on dA and created something new: The Art Pimp's Pad. At last I have a standard, updatable section where I can post the names of comission-accepting artists instead of just a mostly-ignored onetime promo in a journal entry. If you're an artist (or writer, or scuptor, or whatever) who's taking comissions and want to be in the Pad, let me know (though it'd also be good if you let me know when you stop taking comissions for whatever reason, so I can keep the Pad updated).

Something interesting happened last Saturday, and since I have nothing better to do I'm going to regale you with it

So it's Saturday evening and I'm at my usual spot (rightchere on the computer) when I hear a lot of barking outside. This comes as no surprise, as our two dogs yap up a storm every time someone walks down the alley, and while there's more barking than usual I pay it no heed. Then later I leave The Lair to stretch my legs, and quickly run into my sister... with a Jack Russell Terrier pup in her arms.

Apparently she was what stirred up all that barking, then my mom and sister brought her in assuming she was lost. Em dubbed her "Honeybritches" ( "You're a bit too tough to be called 'Sweetpea'" ). We kept her down in the basement with us because she was all too willing to pick a fight with the girls (seems like a common trait with Jack Russells to me) where Emily spoiled her rotten with pampering.

After a bit I surfaced to get Mom and Grandpa's take on the matter. Mom was trying to get in touch with the pound about missing animals, and told me that since Derby and Sasha were a bit wound up by the new fuzzball, a walk would do them good. Couldn't really refute that, so I got their leashes and collars on and took them out.

Derby took to the walk with a little less enthusiasm than normal, and Sasha flat-out refused to move. I nearly had to drag her down the block when a car passed by and suddenly pulled up to me. "Have you seen a white--" "Jack Russell? Yup, follow me."

So I lead the guy back home (stopping to scoop at one point) where Honeybritches, real name being Lola, was overjoyed. Her owner thanked us profusely and took the little scamp up in his arms, and Derby and Sasha breathed a sigh of relief. Don'tcha just love happy endings?

Speaking of happy endings, I might be nearing one myself. Just got back from a promising job interview at a shop in the mall, so I may actually be employed again! Holy crap! Keeping my fingers crossed on this one...

Oh yeah, still no Word Going to have to grab =Jinzouki and help him walk me through torrent-ing it again... Soon™ folks, Soon™ [link] HAHA DISREGARD THAT! ... friends... I have become a TROLL.

A certain someone who will remain nameless (aw hell, it was =Jinzouki, blame him) gave me the link to Encyclopedia Dramatica a week or two ago in an IM conversation. I had encountered ED before, writing it off as an archive of the armpit of the Internet. But then I looked up the pages of more and more troll targets, and was aghast at the sheer stupidity the victims exhibited. The sheer arrogance in the face of honest, constructive criticism, the outrageous attempts at lying, the rampant hypocracy... and worst of all, this was happening right in my own e-backyard. That's right. DeviantArt.

My inner crusader was awakened and enraged. I could not merely sit and watch, I had to DO something! Thus, I found a particular chump (who will remain nameless, partly because I don't want to inflame the trolling and partly because said chump is convinced pageviews validate the worth of his art (seriously, look at him apply at ConceptArt, which is the hangout for CAREER artists, right here: [link] )) and took a few shots. Nothing severe, though it DID earn me some free fanart (which got deleted, alas).

Nonetheless, this is my only account and the BanHammer of deviantArt is... fickle, to put it charitably. Thus, I think I'm going to lay off the trolling and instead reflect at how lucky I am. Lucky to have a large circle of great people with great art where I can frolic in, away from the attention whores, the egotists, the egotistical attention whores, and other morons who give dA such a bad reputation. In short, I fucking love you guys

IN OTHER NEWS...

Right now my computer is still without Microsoft Word, and thus my writing is still on hold because I am a fussy bastard. But there's a great short, action-packed story that's trying to claw its way out of my skull chestburster-style, so I am suitably motivated to change that (It's also going to be a belated birthday gift for ~buckeyestar too, but don't tell him that!).

For Father's Day I got my dad something a smidge out of the ordinary: a copy of BioShock for PC. Dad's never been a gamer, but he mentioned awhile ago that BioShock caught his eye. Plus I figure the deep, elaborate storytelling in BioShock makes it a lot more appealing to an ex-English teacher than Space Marine Shooter #842, right?

Once ' pon time, there was guy named Chris. Chris LOVED his computer, but computer not well. Computer freeze up at horrible moments when playing favorite games! Freezing computer made Chris sad. Chris called up buddies, who knew much more about computers than Chris did. Both buddies thought freeze was because of too much dust, so Chris buy can of compressed air to clean it out.

Chris do good job cleaning computer, pulling out many dust bunnies. Chris thought his computer would run good as new! Then Chris plug it in... and was told Windows system file was corrupted.

This make Chris worry. Chris had many many things on computer. Stories, pics, logs, and porn! All could be lost with Windows corrupted!

Chris knew what to do: Call Tommy, his computer genius buddy. Chris lugs computer to Doctor Tommy and watches as Tommy shows off his awesome super computer. Chris too dumb to understand much, but he nodded at all the right times. Tommy take all important stuff and stick it on awesome super computer, then re-install Windows. Thank you, herr Doktor!

Now, Chris is stuck down-loading all old programs he used lots, rearraging old files to be easy to reach, and basically make computer good as new. Hooray? Hooray.

Okay, so I was talking with the darling wonderful whose gallery you should check out RIGHT NOW (noticing a pattern?) on MSN and she found this journal entry. Here's what she had to say:

"Fear of failure? Well don't be afriad to write something bad. It's a learning experience. I've drawn bad pictures, I've never won a contest. It's all to better yourself as an artist or for you a writer. You can't be afriad to fail or you'll never do anything in life. Take chances, make mistakes. Yes thats said a lot, but it's true."

And, well, she's right, dammit. And good thing she said it, because the heaped reassurances weren't exactly forthcoming Now comes the tricky part of sitting down and actually brainstorming ideas for these babies and get them put together before the deadlines...

You know it's bad when you start identifying with a poem written by a fictional lunatic from a video game.

After a recent visit to my psychiatrist she decided to monkey with my medication again. The last time she did, I immediately started feeling happier and more energetic. This time, however, she decided to decrease my dosage even though she's been saying all along that I've been sorely under-medicated for years.

The result? I'm now kicking myself for the stupidest of reasons (though the one where I gave Gail Simone a copy of my comic when it had a TYPO in it is a pretty valid one ), I've become socially withdrawn from my friends online, I've become short-tempered and snarly, and just generally miserable. Basically, I feel worse than I did before I met Dr. Fogarty in the first place. Thankfully our next appointment is soon, so I can get things straightened out with her and hopefully get back to the happy.

In the meantime, won't somebody please take the ears off?

Obviously a lot of newer "indy" titles on the list but hey, might as well give new talent a shot and besides, everything was 35% off anyway. Now I just have to sit down and READ all these suckers...

The highlight of the day of course was meeting my hero, Goddess of Words Gail Simone. She proved to be an absolutely wonderful woman, very kind and great with the fans. She was able to tolerate me buzzing around her table every so often with new questions, and I was able to snag a few photos of us together (which I will put up the moment I figure out how to link my comp and camera together).

The one thing I was saddened to miss was the costume women's roller derby down in Whyte Ave, but I missed a bus connection and wasn't able to get to the show in time. Which is a shame because roller derby = pro wrestling on wheels, and throw some really good superheroine costumes into the mix you've got the pinnacle of male fantasy right there. Oh well, there's always next year.

So yes, right now I am somewhere between Win And Awesome.

Lemme tell ya, spending several weeks staring at a computer monitor isn't the healthiest thing to do...

Seriously though, while I've tried to control my internet addiction and minimize the time spent doing nothing online, the last few weeks have kinda bled into each other.

Oh, and something I've learned after reconnecting with friends both local and online: everyone's doing better than I am. Solid employment, better social lives... basically anything that beats living in a basement with no job, and that ain't hard.

At least I've been able to cut through my Work In Progress pile, even though my postings seem to attract more s than comments or feedback. (PROTIP: I FIND THAT COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK ARE VASTLY SUPERIOR TO QUIET +FAVINGS. CONSIDER THAT A HINT). So now I'm faced with a loveable bunch of happy, perky story ideas that just can't wait to be started... annnnd I discover my motivation and inspiration tanks are both running on fumes. So yeah, if you see my muse loafing off, tell the little twerp to get back to work, I bloody well need her.

So yeah, that's about it for now... oh, and I need to start planning on what to do for the convention in Calgary... assuming I can catch a lift with the guys at Metropolis...

Well the reason I'm so pumped is that my personal computer at long last has been hooked up to Teh Interwebs. My fingers still feel like they're occasionally being bitten by tiny glass ants from all the fiberglass I had to go through to get the cable hooked up, but it's all worth it. Especially now I can finish all those projects I was hesitant to wrap up because I couldn't post them, because now I can! Go me!

In other news, recently my mother came home from a shopping trip to Costco and I was happily surprised to learn she had got me a pair of cargo pants. I like Costco cargos for their versitility, but all of my past pairs had worn out on me. Thus I was quick to shuck my drawers and try them on.

That's when the button fly snapped. I was too fat to fit in them.

Oh, it is on. From here on in I solemnly swear to fit into those buggers if it kills me. More dogwalking. Reduce my donut intake. Whatever it takes

The only thing keeping me from going to NCSoft and getting my CoH account reactivated is the teensy matter that my credit card expired in March. Going to take some angling to get a new card, but I have the extra motivation to get it before the end of May and miss out on getting the latest anniversary badge *badgehound*

SUPER DEPRESSING UPDATE!

Spike, the much-beloved family budgie, pretty much just died in my arms an hour ago. I dunno what caused it and there are plenty of potential culprits, but it's all kinda pointless now.

Spike was an amazing bird from the moment she entered our lives. We found her a few winters ago after a mean cold snap feeding from a birdfeeder outside my mother's workplace. Once Mom got her home we decided to name her Spike, on account that any budgie that can survive -30 Celcius weather deserved a tough name.

Spike quickly proved she deserved her tough moniker. She utterly destroyed a lightshade and taunted the dogs. In some cases she'd muscle right up to the dogs, perch on the rim of their food dishes, and take a test nibble of some kibble. Derby usually put up with this. Sasha would simply headbutt the bird away if she became a bother.

Spike really shocked us when I looked in her cage one day and discovered a little white ovoid thing in the midst of a shredded newspaper nest. She was laying eggs! Turns out this is a normal thing for female birds and she ended up laying 9 before stopping, which is pretty impressive when you compare how big the eggs are to the bird. Needless to say we pampered her rotten during that time.

After the move Spike got accustomed to her new home fairly well, which was a good thing as she soon started another egg-laying binge. This time she built her nest *under* the top layer of newspaper and proceeded to burrow through about an inch of newsprint. So basically you could look in the cage and just see this lump and maybe some tailfeathers sticking out from under the newspaper. I joked that she must have been adopted by a family of burrowing owls before we got her.

So yeah, that's my beloved bird's greatest hits. I've already cried, sobbed, and wept, and something tells me Spike wouldn't approve of me dwelling on this too much. So I think I'm going to watch that Watchmen trailer again

... okay, maybe I'm not pregnant, but I fershluggin' LOOK pregnant. Good thing I've broken my ice cream addiction, now I just wish the family'd stop buying case after case of donuts and strudels.

In other news my beloved computer decided to shut down on me due to a fried PSU. At least, I THINK it's a fried PSU... it's a little hard to tell when your tech support consists of the friend you bought the thing off of. In any case I am now denied not only my creative outlet but my access to stress-relieving splatterfests like Painkiller, Diablo, and Peggle. Needless to say I feel like I'm about to turn green and start breaking things.

As for the comic world, go to your Friendly Neighborhood Comic Shop and ask for Atomic Robo. What's Atomic Robo? It's the best damn comic you're not reading. Get to it!

Oigh, headache's refusing to leave and my eyelids feel like they put on 50 pounds each. Gonna go lay down...

At least the good news is I'm a go for the Calgary convention next month. Go me!

Last time I had a journal with the title "Convention Season", it was little more than an apologetic, envious rant about how all the conventions were taking place across the border and how I was too poor to do anything but sigh wistfully. That was then.

Currently plotting ways to get down there for cheap and coming up with 2 plans so far: Either go to my friendly local comic shop and volunteer to help set up and take down their booth at the show, or convince my mother it's time for a trip to the foothills again. (Frankly I'm banking on plan A at the moment).

Well, it finally happened. We officially, finally moved out of the house we've called home for 22 years. I won't lie, but seeing my room, my lair for my whole life, stripped bare was a bit traumatizing. But at times like this we must look to the future, because dwelling on the past will kill us.

Only problem is that right now the future consists mostly of unpacking the boxes and finding a place for everything here at my grandfather's. At least we managed to find a good home for most of the stuff we didn't want (a new neighbor turned out to be a part of the Salvation Army. Talk about serendipity!) and I plan on donating a bunch of my old books to my old elementary school. Past meets future

Thankfully this also frees me up to properly search for work, and I think I've managed to corner a job at the almighty West Edmonton Mall (Google it ). Going in for an interview tomorrow, so wish me luck Hopefully once I land this sucker I'll finally get my main computer hooked to the Interwebs, which means no more worrying about my graphics drivers degrading when I play Painkiller Oh, and all that rejoining the online community in full stuff, too

My mother got fired from her job! Now she has LOTS of spare time around the house to make my life delightfully hellish. Hooray economic downturn!

Day 8 of the invasion.

So far so good. Slowly starting to get used to my new home, though sleep has been a bit fitful (I really need some curtains to keep the light out). Our living room is dominated by the second couch that didn't fit downstairs as intended (we'll try again in spring).

In amongst the moving chaos Christmas was barely a blip on the radar. Got primarily clothing and gift cards this year, not too much to write about. (Is it just me or are gift cards becoming just a bit *too* convenient for gift-giving? People don't seem to put the effort into the hunt the way they used to...)

Obviously I have computer access via the family comp, but I'm waiting for the next move run to get mine and get my net connection up. In the meantime I hope to get back on track as far as writing goes. I've got a few ideas in the fantasy genre that, while they'd be passable as text, they'd truly shine as comics.

I solemnly vowed to do this interview one of these days when I saw do it. That was over a year ago.

It's go time.

I walk through the door to find three guys sitting together on the couch. The guy on the left is huge, with a full Chuck Norris-worthy brown beard. The middle guy has black hair and a grin I'm not entirely comfortable with. On the right is a kid in his mid-teens, his blond hair a contrast with his black shirt and pants.

"Righty-o, let's get this started gentlemen," I say as I sit across from the Three Amigos and start the tape recorder.

"First question, male or female?"

"Only one way to be sure!" says the middle guy, who suddenly stands and reaches for his belt buckle. With practiced casualness and synchronicity the other two grab him by his earlobes and yank him back to his seat. I blink a few times.

"Male 'cross the board, lad" the big guy on the left says as the kid smacks the middle guy upside the head.

Me: Okay then... names?
Left: Ivan Tulikov.
Middle: Marty Rallner. And I wasn't going to pull my pants down, honest.
Right: Tobias Henderson.

Me: Age?
Ivan: I was born in '21, so that makes me *thinks* 87.
Me: *blinks*
Ivan: I age well, apparently.
Marty: Yup, can juggle SUVs like he was only seventy-five. Anyway I'm 32. Secret to the universe and all that.
Toby: You're ten short, as usual Marty... and I'm turning eighteen in a month.

Me: So what's your life expectancy?
Ivan: Heh, I think I've got a few more decades left in me yet.
Toby: I honestly couldn't tell you
Marty: I'm just amazed I've survived this long, to be frank. Or Carl.

Me: *exhastperated sigh*
Ivan: Would you like us to punch him? *points at Marty*
Me: If he keeps it up, yes.
Marty: *imitating Gil the Crab* [link] No punch, no punch, no punch.

Me: Anyway, how tall are you?
Ivan: 6'9"
Marty: Six even.
Toby: I come in at around 5'8".

Me: Ahh, the joy of a simple answer. Okay, what do you do for a living?
Ivan: I do mostly hero work, but I also volunteer at a youth rec center and a soup kitchen when I can.
Marty: Ivan's like Mother Theresa. With a beard. Me, I do hero work as well but with a bent toward paranormal investigation and tactical scenarios. So I'm part SWAT cop and part Ghostbuster.
Toby: *grumbles* I'm still in bloody high school...

Me: Alright, what's your favorite food?
Ivan: I can never resist a good plate of fish and chips.
Toby: Big greasy hamburgers. My metabolism lets me put them away like a vacuum.
Marty: I enjoy shanghai noodles, slurped with chopsticks and an extra helping of sauce.

Me: Favorite color?

I just got back from the mall where I saw something unsettling. I was sitting on a bench attempting to jumpstart myself with some ice cream when I noticed a little boy, 2-3 years old at most, alone in the middle of the corridor. There was no sign of his mom nearby, but the disconcerting thing was the number of people who just looked at him and kept on walking. Eventually I walked over and asked him where mom was, which actually brought her running out from a nearby store. She thanked me, scooped her child up, and took him back inside. After that I could see her chasing the kidlet a bit and heading off a second escape attempt. It still really bugs me that a toddler can lie down in a crowded mall and no-body will care enough to stop. Really bothersome.

In other news, I've been feeling rather down lately. Right now *stvkar and ~Art-n-Coffee are both looking to me to write something for them to illustrate, and I'm afeared that I'll contract The Block if I sit down and start thinking.

Something else I've been meaning to say: Recently got to watch Indy 4 for the first time and weigh in on it. Basically it's a good example of 50s pulp with the Russians, Roswell, aliens, etc. One problem: Indiana Jones is 30s pulp. If it doesn't have Nazis it's just not worth it. Other complaints are the underwhelming music score and the insertion of a token young sidekick unjokingly named "Mutt". All in all it doesn't RUIN FOREVAR the first 3 films, but it's not quite good enough to hang with them, either.

Well, I'm back (A million quatloos to whoever gets the reference).

The convention was a grand thing. Just seeing the look on my Friendly Neighborhood Comic Shop owner when I called his name (He was set up at the exhibitor's hall) was worth the trip. I got myself a new t-shirt, a new mousepad (a Green Hornet one no less!), a graphic novel I've been wanting and a few D&D texts (and all on the cheap, too!). Looking back there were a few moments, alas. Using a cab when the convention center was within walking distance was one. Also didn't really get an opportunity to flog Gun Smarts (sorry *stvkar !) Oh well. Stuff to remember the next time I go to a convention, right?

Oh yeah: I got to hang with Geordi LaForge and Boba Fett. Got an autograph of one and got to do a few acting exercises with the other where I got a kid in a Jedi robe to stick 'em up Awesome is beyond understatement.

All in all, aside from the various moments it was excellent. Got to spread my wings and handled myself admirably, got to go swimming for the first time in ages. All in all I can't wait to go on another such adventure.

I just gotta get a job, first... Sigh. Back to reality.

Good lord things have gone down the proverbial crapperoony. September? What the hell happened to August?!

Good news! The truly awesome (and how can he not, he's a fellow Edmontonian!) has offered to illustrate my flagship piece, a little script I call Gun Smarts. I've looked over the roughs and was overjoyed with the results, meaning that by the time I make the cold, dark trek to Winnipeg next month (Holy crap it's next month! Where the hell did the time go, to Fiji or something?! ) I'll have the perfect example sample of my work to show to people ~stvkar also tapped me to help write a script for his own original characters, so as the Bogart line goes, this could be the start of a beautiful relationship I'll keep you posted, true believers!

In other news Spike, my loveable brat of a budgie, has gone into egg-laying overdrive. We put a small cardboard box in her cage to serve as a nest box and she promptly took it over, making herself a nest of shredded newspaper to sit in constantly. We've left the eggs in there for her so she doesn't overdo it, but she seems to be happy and healthy. So far counting the first three we removed (and have since returned) she's produced about 7-8 eggs so far. I'm trying not to fret, but it's hard to fight the urge to look for the nearest avian veterenarian in the city.

In other other news, it seems my biggest enemy right now is my life's sheer... insipidness. The bi-polarism (Which I'm pretty certain I have, now) seems to give me the highs at night during and after work. This generally leaves me twitching in bed or on the computer (provided my sister and her boyfriend don't pre-empt me from the basement) until morning, then I sleep all day until 4. Then I haul my carcass to work and the cycle repeats itself. And if I forget my pills then I can look forward to 8 hours with a nagging, depressing hanger-on in the back of my brain Obviously this precludes doing things like working on my BioWare project, story works, or just looking for a better job so I'm trapped in a cycle of boring craptitude.

Ah well, I'll break free sooner than later In the meantime I have frest stories I'm working on and right now, sleep awaits

Now with that out of the way, our budgie Spike gave me quite the surprise when I fed her this morning. As usual she knocked down her food and water dishes, so as I reached in to pick them up I noticed, sitting on the floor of the cage, an egg!

Given that she's been alone for more than a year, this is something of a shock. Consulting the Internet uncovered that all female birds lay a couple of unfertilized eggs in their lifetime, as result of the ovulation cycle (and you ladies thought your periods were bad, this egg is pretty damn big!). I think I'm becoming afraid of reading.

Seriously. I haven't touched a comic in days and picking up The Watchmen requires a concentrated effort to not psyche myself out. So far I can still read things like online text (though online prose is another story ) and mental tofu like my D&D books, but who knows how long that's going to last. I think what's going on is simply a fear of the unknown mixed with low self confidence. I gaze into the abyss below... and suddenly find myself curled up beside the far wall wondering where my teddy bear is "Frustrating" doesn't even begin to cover it. The nagging feeling I'm one of eleventy fuckbillion talentless hacks thinking he has a shot makes me want to put my head in a blender, especially combined with the fact that even the *thought* of taking the drastic action needed to make me stand out makes me shudder.

Oh well. One day at a time, I guess. Need to focus on A) getting my fershlugginer health benefits (the ones I've been going on about getting for *months*) and B) learn the NVN toolset well enough to put together an application submission. Nevermind that the toolset is very unintuitive and tough to even open up a saved file, but I'll burn those bridges as I come to them. In the meantime I'll keep poking at The Watchmen and hopefully ease myself back into things. I hope.

Well, feeling a bit odd lately. Discovered I don't need to spend $130 on a new video card when all my current one needed was its drivers updated

So, Dark Knight. Saw it yesterday with some mates and now that the wave of awesome has washed over, time to poke at the crap it left on the beach. Sure, Heath Ledger does an outstanding job and probably does deserve that Oscar, the rest of the movie just seems to go on. And on. And bloody on. It could have seriously used an editorial pruning, especially on the big monologues everyone seems to make about hope and human nature and chaos and symbolism and Zzzzzzz... not to mention they crowbared in the OHMYGOD SPOILERS arc in the film's second act. My main gripe is how they take the edge Bats established in the first movie ( "I don't have to kill you, but I don't have to save you either" ) and smother it with lots and lots of Nerf padding. It makes me appreciate Hellboy 2 a lot more now, which is a shorter, uncomplicated romp with everyone's favorite beast of the apocalypse. Basically, see Dark Knight for Heath Ledger (I will never look at a pencil the same way again) but be prepared for a really long, potentially unnesscary haul.

Planning on expanding my writing and begin to work on short blurbles, getting halfway through just-started projects and just start projects that have been in developmental limbo for ages. Plus I want to tackle writing stuff different than my usual witty fare (a style I've dubbed "Smartass" ). Horror, erotic, drama, I want to try it all.

So, thank the fershlugginer Maker, the temperature finally went down a few notches with some lovely lovely rain recently, so I didn't go on a rampage

Using the time I wasn't spending wielding power tools of mass destruction I visited my local Electronic Boutique and got a copy of Neverwinter Nights 2, so I may create an offering to BioWare's human resource department. I crack open the module-making toolset and discover to my horror it's almost entirely in Moonspeak, AKA Programmer. Putting a module together is going to be like directing a cruise missile with sign language. Oh well, at the very least it'll give me a frame of reference to whip up something text-based that'll get their attention

Ironically I haven't really bothered PLAYING the silly thing. Call me kooky, but I'm the sort of dork who sees D&D as a social thing, something to do with your buds as you swap jokes, stories, and junk food. I sit in front of the idiot screen enough as it is, why sit more? Man I need to call my buddies and maybe organize a one-off adventure night or something... hmmm... HMMMMM...

In other gaming news I've discovered that Painkiller is fucking awesome and extremely soothing. Taking out the day's frustrations by stapling the minions of hell to walls with the stake gun or going on a rampage with the Painkiller blade itself is good for the spleen. My only concerns are the frequent graphic glitches and crashes, both of which can be squarely blamed on my cheap fill-in graphics card. I swear, next paycheque I'm going back to FutureShop and plunking down the $100 or so needed for a proper card, because it's rapidly turning obnoxious

Not much else to report, been flailing away at the tale of Marty, Ivan, and Tobias and finally piecing together the Big Confrontation Scene. And the story of Angie's exorcism gig is rapidly turning out to be solid proof some teenagers are not to be messed with

When I hear the phrase "secret order of assassins" combined with the phrase "secret society secretly controlling mankind" I'm forced to utter the phrase "Gee, what an original concept. That one sure hasn't been flogged to death before" with a good old heaping side-order of sarcasm. Then again I'm quite the rare breed of jaded tit, ain't I? Screw you, Wanted.

Lately I feel like I've gotten a glimpse of the life I want and while it's a distance away I want to sprint the whole way in pursuit of that life. Only problem is the proverbial piano in my shorts that's holding me back. One step at a time... even if you figure you could cover 5 or 6 steps in that time instead. Sigh.

I've got Painkiller, a viscerally satisfying FPS that comes highly recommended by He of No Punctuation ( [link] ) downloading on Steam at a glacially slow pace that's refused to advance a microbyte since I left for work more than eight hours ago. (Addendum: Silly old me forgot it stops downloading if you turn off the comp. Now it's loaded and I'm merrily staking things left and right ) I tried to download and set up my favorite spyware annihilator to help speed things up but it seems their servers and website are down and I can't even install it until they're back up. Two days ago I tore the crotch out of my work pants (which were actually good dress pants from my own closet) while doing a completely pointless chore, forcing me to wear an ultra-fancy (and expensive) pair yesterday that I managed to keep clean until the milkshake explosion two hours before my shift ended. So I got to spend today at the mall to buy a second, less-fancy pair to use. And did I mention I'm trying to be frugal right now? My goddamn fortune cookie yesterday even said so!

These days reading the comics I love has been an exercise in dread. It's like I'm afraid my face will melt from the awesomeness of Gail Simone's writing, or maybe it'll just remind me of my own shortcomings. Still I plunk down $30+ for all my favored titles because I believe in supporting comics that don't suck as opposed to slavishly buying every single issue of Spidey's bazillion titles regardless if they're worth the paper they're printed on or not. Recently I faced a major crisis of character when a friend sent me an e-copy of Batman Confidential #17. It's a great read and kicks off what looks to be a highly amusing little story arc, but did I really want to buy a copy after reading it? My solution is to pick it up eventually but also convince YOU, dear reader, into buying it. It's written by the same guy who writes Deadpool, has excellent art, and has a Bat-Cave's worth of fanservice. Go on, you know you want to buy it now

For the LOVE of BATMAN, even the stupid mood popup menu has caught a case of the retards tonight. I'm not exhilarated, it's TOO DAMN HOT! We Canadians are arctic beasts, we don't cope well with heat. Cold makes you seek activity to get warm, while heat just makes you feel dead

What is it with me, the asscrack of dawn , and journal entries? Seems like my brain feels its most verbose when I can't sleep (clownwilleatme).

Anyway, couple of little musings I figured I'd share. First of all I think I'm going to post journals more often and just report my moods, nifty things that happen, and other such junk nobody cares about

Had an oddball last night at work: about 2 hours before my shift ended I was scooping fries and wondered "Gee, the heat lamp seems to be dimm-"beeyooooooooooooo. Power blacked out. Luckily we were able to manually open the tills and hand out refunds to the few customers we had, 'cause we sure as hell weren't able to fill orders. Everyone had a good laugh and chuckle, I helped myself to a free Sprite that had been poured beforehand (I'm a blackbelt at opportunistic scavenging) and we slacked off for a bit in the dark before we got sent home. Don't know what actually caused it, I did see some firetrucks pulled up across the street, but no smoke or anything. Ah well, I got to go home early and catch Superman 2 on TV. Go me!

In other news, I was visiting my friendly neighborhood comic shop when I found a flyer for a comic convention in the land of ice and snow (AKA Winnipeg) in October. I looked at that flyer and held it aloft, for it was a sign! A sign that I would embark on a long and ardouous QUEST! A QUEST to rack up enough funds and organize myself to BRAVE the frozen tundra of Manitoba and STRIDE through the much-whispered holy land of my peers! Then I put the thing down because the girl behind the counter was giving me odd looks. Seriously though, now I have a big shiny goal to shoot for. Plus, Jeremy Bulloch, Lou Ferrigno, and John DeLancie are all going to be there. Boba Fett, the Hulk, AND Q? Holy crap YES!

On the writing front, I just had a braingeyser of ideas helping to flesh out a storyline I've been kicking around for awhile... the one labelled Obligatory Mirrorverse Story. Do I dare inflict upon the world the story of Angela Summers, rebel heroine and her nemesis, the thrillkilling Mr. Headshot? Of course! Good, bad, I'm the guy writing this


One more thing before I wrap this puppy up. Two things, actually: Friend of a friend of mine is an amazing jewellery maker, and she's doing a lot to promote him. I figured I'd help by saying GO LOOK NOW! [link]

Well my computer decided to fritz out on me Monday night, forcing me to call my resident computer expert, AKA the friend I bought it off of. He came over Wedensday (Tuesday being spent in a near catatonic state) and determined the source of the fritzing to be a cacked video card. Deciding to heed the call of action I waddled out and bought myself a new one within the hour for (relatively) cheap, and was even able to get my aforementioned buddy to install it. Now when I play CoH I'm plagued by little grids of off-color squares, but it beats not playing it at all. Sadly this has also finally nailed the coffin shut on my hopes of getting a commish from ~B-McKinney Even worse, I don't think the new card likes the new format of Zero Punctuation, in which it has something in common with me.

Haven't returned correspondence to the would be head of the Alberta Voice Actor's Guild, more out of inconvenience than timidity or laziness. I'd do it now but I've learned that late nights are not conducive to coherent thought.

Honestly wondering about maybe, just maybe planning an expedition to meet some online friends face to face. ~Art-n-Coffee / ~The-Fab-Furry lives relatively close, ~Polarzen and ~Maiitsoh have laid out the welcome mat in the past, and of course there's the gang in Texas whose style I more than likely would crimp.

Writing is slow but progressing. I pray to have Angie's current story done by the weekend, even though I might require a sick day or two from work *keff*

Rapidly approaching the point at work where I get a health plan with suitable coverage (at knifepoint, if need be), get my teeth worked on and start flogging resumes as soon as the codine wears off. Nothing against my co-workers, but when you start praying for an earthquake just to liven up the work week, you need to bail. The only worry is what the next job entails and if it can keep my sanity mostly intact. In the meantime I'll just be happy if these damn headaches would bugger off.

Well, been metaphorically tasting a whole bunch of things lately and figure it's time I weighed in on 'em.

Mario Kart Wii: Loony. The fact that about half the courses are from past games: awesome. Only problem: Still suck at them. Also, Rosalina's pretty cute.

Smash Broz Brawl: Disappointed at how many characters were knockoffs of each other. Do we really need 3 characters with the same Final Smash? Sure the graphics are pretty, but I'm getting a vibe they're not trying to hard. Snake is bloody awesome, though. Sonic is still just a 90s ExTrEmE version of Mickey Mouse. Nonetheless, good fun headbutting each other in the face.

Iron Man: As others have said, the best comic movie yet. Go see it, and keep an eye out for Cap's shield

CoH issue 12: Yay for new maps. Boo for sucidal NPCs. If you didn't think the dev team had a massive boner for ancient Greece, think again.

Work: sucks.

Frankly, I don't care if this game turns out to be better than Tekken, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Smash Bros. combined: it's a dumbass concept that reeks of "ripoff" (*keff*[link] *kaffkaff*) and attempting to be the next peanut butter and chocolate and coming up with ice cream and ketchup. And so everyone gets ready to attend the various comic conventions that'll be held in the next few months. In that same time I get to sit here, seething with envy at aforementioned con-goers.

I just feel I'm stuck in the slow lane right now. Once the month is up I can reap my health benefits and get the dental work I really need done (not to mention my mother promised me a new computer chair after one month of gainful employment), but it feels like a freakin' eternity to get there. Didn't help that I found out today I'm making a measely $8.50 an hour at McDonalds. Not exactly the best wage to save up for things like a trip across the border.

Yesterday was Grandma's funeral. It was a happy occasion, as Grandma had said she didn't want everyone all weepy. I wound up striking a conversation with a woman who had only met Grandma recently, and found myself getting a lot of closure telling her about Grandma. She was a headstrong, high-energy woman who always wanted to try new things and it took major health issues to even slow her down. I think I want to get ahold of a (unused) colostomy bag and set it on fire as a tribute to her

McDonalds has the benefit in that it's fast-paced enough I can't get bored most of the time. Handy, no?

My grandmother passed away Friday night. Mom said it was quite peaceful. She was in the hospital room with Grandma and didn't notice she was gone.

I won't lie to you, my grandmother was often a royal pain in the ass. She liked to be waited on hand and foot and frequently abused the kindness everyone showed in taking care of her during her ailing health. Still, she will be missed... *sighs*


In other news: still suffering from shy inferiority complex. Still haven't screwed up the courage to register at [link] and hobnob with the folks there. Haven't even the guts to keep reading The Watchmen or some of the Pratchett books I have laying around.

Job has been okay. Survived first week with only minor screwups. Go me. Currently praying this little used book store I passed by earlier in the week will still have a Help Wanted sign hanging in a month or two after my health benefits kick in and I get my teeth taken care of.

Had my ingrown toenail operated on yesterday. Process hurt like a bitch but got through it. Now just have to keep soaking and bandaging it.

Minor plus side: Two new story ideas struck me recently and they're both short enough to bang out quickly. w00t.

If you're confused by the title, scratchpad is my word for writing down random thoughts and ideas that pass through my head. In this case, I felt like listing ideas for artwork I'd like to comission. Since my broke-ness won't last forever (thankfully) I'll eventually be able to make these real, but in the meantime I just want them typed up so they'll stop cluttering my headspace.

Let us begin:

Just clearing out that depressing journal.

Still no job. Yet. Going over to nearest McDonalds' to apply tomorrow. Chances of being hired are good to excellent, and with benefits being offered after one month means I can get my teeth looked at sooner rather than later Sure it's a McJob, but money's money, money (that's a little bit of ghetto speak for you, yo).

Yesterday I end up catching a call from my sister's boyfriend (a surprisingly cool dude) who informed me that he and a buddy knew of a factory gig I might be interested in. $23 an hour, full benefits, on a bus route, and all it requires is lifting stuff and dealing with the smell Right now just waiting for him to call back with little details like the name, phone number and address for this place So yeah, quite the swerve, no?


AUGH! WAFFLING!

So yeah, now that I've had time to think about it I think I'm gonna stick with the McJob. Not to sound too cynical, but I am horridly out of shape and the distant commute, 12-hour shifts, and heavy lifting may very well kill me Meanwhile McDonalds is walking distance, less pay but still benefits, and less hardcore, burly-man shifts. It's a tough call to make (I mean, turning down $23 an hour! ) but I think my body will appreciate it. Besides, once I get money I can get that punching bag I royally need to relieve stress and get in shape. If only I knew what muscles are used when you're beating something with a stick...

I don't know what it is lately, but for the last few months I've been wracked with chronic shyness.

I know what you're thinking: "Zerry you callipygean wonder, how can an outgoing guy like you with an avatar like the X-Batch say he's being shy?"

Well, for starters this overwhelming shyness likes to pick its spots, it seems. A little while ago ~Druce-White-Owl gave me a link to a forum that Gail Simone, Goddess of Words, frequents. I promptly added it to my favorites... and haven't touched it since. Not for a lack of wanting to, though. I'm just... too damn timid to go in there and attempt to meet her.

And an even more silly example is with my latest fic submission. recently said she loved it, enough to actually fav it. I've had plenty of time to ask her for creative criticism, but again every chance I get I just freeze up deer-in-headlights style until I forget about it.

Dunno why I've posted this, I guess I just needed to get it off my chest
