Well, things are going well so far this summer. I've got a part-time job. I saw all three Harry Potter movies over the last few days (reviews in my LiveJournal if you're listed as a friend: here), and I'll be able to read the books now thanks to a loaning friend.

I'm not doing as much art as I'd hoped I would. I was planning on taking a whole bunch of photos at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, but I ended up only going for a few hours (it was icky), and took a couple of snapshots. I could probably upload those. As far as drawing, I'm in the middle of a trade with ~charisangel, which is going alright. I actually had the sketch and some inking done within days of our decision, but being busy lately has meant that's as far as it's gotten. I should finish that soon.

I want to get to know more people on here. So far I've just been striking up conversations with friends of my friends, and commenting a lot on random deviations...but that doesn't seem to get me on anyone's devwatch list. So I've been looking at clubs - is there anyone that would recommend a club to me? I just have no idea how clubs work on here, or how to join, or WHO to join. Advice would be appreciated. Some of you are in my art harem, you're REQUIRED to help me with these things. ~_^

So I finally made a deviation, for the first time in a while. I've got to say, it was quite informative. Going through the submission process really proved how the administration here is completely biased against Anime and Anthro artists, and also amateur artists en masse. First off, Anime and Anthro are the only categories that have reminders to submit "unfinished" or "unrefined" artwork to the scraps gallery. What kind of a message is that sending?

Second, the description of anything that belongs as an actual deviation is "A deviation is a polished, refined, and completed work of art - something you want to showcase, to exhibit." Does that sound a bit lofty to anyone else? Except for the fact that I couldn't give a crap about what DA Admin would prefer my art page to look like, I'd never submit anything as a deviation under those terms!

It must be because categories like A/A and other drawn art are obviously either very good or very amateur. I mean, you can look at mine and tell that I haven't put as much time or talent into my art as some of the people on here who do it for a living. It's still got a white background, sometimes elements are left unfinished, etc. It's different for other categories - the photos that I took and posted on here are really just snapshots that I thought were framed a lot better than the others I took. They're the result of literally HOURS less work than the drawings of Talia, Metonnika's Apollo, or Tondrael. But they still look like finely finished deviations. I remember a program I had once upon a time that would generate random fractal images in any scheme of colors and image size that I picked - with that program, I could literally make a deviation that looks like a finished CGI deviation in four or five mouse clicks, rather than the hours of work that someone in high school with aspirations of being an artist put into a drawing that might come off to others as a "doodle".

As if that wasn't frustrating enough, for some reason there's the further "reminders" only posted to the A/A drawing categories. Bleh. I know this was badly phrased, and I'd explain myself better if anyone was actually reading this, but they aren't, and I'm not. I just felt like venting.

P.S. - Anyone notice you can't favorite scraps? I think any faves are removed if you make something a scrap as well...that sucks, because some of the pictures that I've found to give the most insight or inspiration would probably be labeled "Scraps" by their authors.
My bit of advice: Don't make anything a scrap. Seriously. It's complicated and pointless, and you never know when someone will fave something just because of the value it contains between artists. Not all of us are so focused on commercialism and selling prints, DeviantART. Get over yourselves.

I'm working on a picture for the end of my In Nomine campaign that'll hopefully be finished Friday. Well, I mean, the campaign def. will be, but hopefully the picture is so that people can see...yeah. That. I've put a lot of thought and time into it. Maybe that's my problem...I can't SKETCH. Either it looks like a stick figure that another stick figure pooped on, or it's a complete drawing. *sigh*

Hey, everyone. I know I haven't posted anything since...wow. Since February. I've just been really busy. If you really want to keep up on the latest happenings, you should probably join LiveJournal and friend me - Zionchild.

So here's the status: I think I want to commission someone to do a set of three large paintings/drawings for the new house whenever we move in. At the very least I want to see what it might cost to have them done. I've got some rough ideas of what I want the images to look like (I already posted them in my LJ), but I'm just doing some investigating into prices and willingness right now.

So here's where I need your help: I need to find a really good artist that does commissions and could pull off the set that I'm thinking of. I'm searching DA for someone, but with limited success. Who's your favorite artist on here? I don't mean personality-wise, I mean who do you honestly believe is the most talented artist you know? This is your chance to altruistically promote someone you really think is underrated and/or deserves a break.

The images would be fairly simplistic, with very limited backgrounds (clouds and buildings), and two of them will most likely be light, while one will be dark. They will however be large, in color, and suitable for framing. If you need more info, you can either AIM me at Zionchild7 or e-mail me at: zionchild(at)eml.cc - so what do you guys think?

I know, I've been neglecting all this lately. I know, I've been keeping up on comments, but not much of my own material. I'd like to blame it on the lack of commentage, but I just haven't even uploaded enough to claim that. To tell the truth, I haven't even been drawing that much lately. I kinda feel bad about it...one of my goals was to start drawing more over break. Classes start on Monday. -_-

Okay, what I need to do - 1) Give Lunar: Eternal Blue back to Mike. I'll just never finish it. 2) Complete FFIX and give it back to Noel. I'm very close to the end. 3) Give FFVIII back to Mike - I'll probably never start it. Not for a LONG while, anyway (years at least). 4) When all that's done, put the PS1 away. I don't need it. 5) Focus on reading the Darkover novels and drawing, and practice guitar, especially now that I'll have a class in it. 6) Keep up the nightly prayer thing. Calms me a lot. 7) Go online maybe once or twice a day? That should be enough unless I have an arrangement like ~charisangel and I getting together on Thursdays or something.

Hmm. Y'know, I do have a couple sketches that I could ink and upload, but I have a problem. I bought a smaller sketchbook to carry with me because the bigger one's binding was splitting badly due to carrying-wear. I've sketched a couple of small things in the smaller one, but I don't think it's going to scan right because it won't lay flat on the flatbed. How do you folks get around this, if you have bound sketchbooks? (Or even if you don't, any ideas?) I hate to cut the pages out - they're not like spiral notebooks, they're all nice and stuff, but...any help, guys?

I wonder what I am - an anime artist or a photographer. I have submitted both. Hmm.

Yeah, so the majority of you have already heard about the whole DTF-Anime/Anthro issue. I read about it today. And it really weirds me out. Whoever said how favorites HAD to be used? It seems to me that the A/A community just uses it differently than others do, and I don't see a problem with it. The only faves that I've gotten have probably been as encouragement, sort of "this is a good direction to go, I really like this from you, keep working in this area". The ones that I've given are for very good reasons, but not all of them were because I think they're worthy of publication/cover art/TV syndication. Then why do I add favorites?

1) Raw creativity. I DO have what $jark would refer to as a "scribble" as a fave - "I Won't Say I'm In Looooooove" by ~ emeraldrae. Though it's well-proportioned and well-colored, it's on lined paper that isn't perfectly straight. It's obviously drawn on a small scale. It was drawn in a class. But it approaches a level of cuteness that I really adore. It's wonderful. So I faved it. I'd fave others that give me the same reaction.
2) Reference. I have a couple devs faved that aren't necessarily book material, but contain elements that I would realy like to have in my own art, and I want to know where these devs are when I draw something like it. ~ emeraldrae's ears, the aquatic wings and features of ~daemonchan's Mizu No Tsubasa, and the proportions of ~Ajinryu 's Bikini Jen are all things I'd like to incorporate eventually.
3) Trades/Gift Art/etc. I always fave these because I think it's just good farking etiquette. Plus, I've LIKED every single one so far.

If everyone outside of A/A simply faves stuff that's somehow representative of " perfect art", then obviously things aren't going to look the same across the board. Now - A/A faves like this would make for a better and more encouraged art community, while the way I percieve others' faves simply make for a prettier front page for DeviantART. Which is better?

Questions I'd have about this entire issue:
-What are the amount of A/A submissions daily compared with other seperate categories? Whenever I load up the main page, "Recent Deviations" always seems to be around 50% A/A submissions. This would seem to say that there's a bigger, or at least more active, A/A community than other categories. If this is true, then what's the problem with there being more DTFs from this category?

Overall, I think that what the admin did is probably among the worst things possible - it encouraged the already prevalent animosity between A/Aers and other Deviants, and discouraged people just trying to do a likeable enough work to be a DTF. Either removing the DTF system altogether, or only allowing one DTF from each category would have been much more effective, and the former could have been done immediately. What they've done hasn't even removed A/A submissions from DTF entirely - looking at them right now, I see one out of the five that actually loaded that should probably be classified as A/A.

Which brings me to my final point - is THIS what should be the primary concern for admins? I mean, come ON! Thumbnails still aren't loading up, DA will occasionally forget that a comment I made ever existed IN THE PROCESS OF POSTING IT, and I'm sure this isn't the full list of major functionality problems. Isn't there better things to focus on than a popularity contest? Anyhoo, I'm done. How's that for a long journal post?

Well, Talia's up, and with that everything major I have started is finished. A tattoo idea is being penned and should be up soon, and there's another idea in the mindworks. Still, I really need to be focusing on papers instead. Besides, I'm not getting any comments anyway. (Thanks to those of you who do, though!!)

Uhmm, yeh. Other than that, nothing new that I haven't posted on my LJ. (Right Here)

Can't wait till these papers are either done or failed. then maybe I can do another trade - this one was muy fun. ^_^ Anyone up for it? It wouldn't be for a while! ~_^

Schoolwork is killing me, so I don't have as much time to do things as I want. I can't wait for next semester - I'm only going to take about 12 credit hours so that I'm no longer murdering myself.

Artwise, I've really appreciated the couple comments that I got on the trade pic with ~metonnika. I hope to keep improving, and feedback's vital to that process. I've been working on a new char named Talia that seems to be doing well - I have no idea how I managed to pencil realistic legs, but I guess it has to happen randomly at some point. I'm sure I'll mess it up in ink. ^_^ Eh, that's really it at the moment, cept for this mess-up doodle that I inked to have some practice shading. I'll probably upload that as well once I'm done botching it. Hmm - maybe I should do a DevID, eh? All sorts of wonderful ideas for the next time I have free time. Later!

Anyway, I guess it's traditional or something, so if you get my 100th pageview let me know and I'll do something. Photo, drawing, dance around like a monkey...something'll give you a good laugh. ~_^
And then we'll just hold off until 500, 1000, etc. If it ever GETS that far. XP

I like anime and some of the furrishness, but it just seems like I can't get the casual style of that sort of art down in sketches. I wonder if I should be focusing on comic art. ::shrugs:: I guess it'll be comicanime for now, and we'll see what it mutates into. I'm only a beginner, after all. I guess I shouldn't pin down a style after like 3 months of drawing. ~_^

This whole DA thing is picking up a lot slower than I thought it would, so I've come up with a wonderful idea. I've decided that I'm going to do a trade pic with myself. I'll do a drawing of one of my chars, and in exchange - get this - I'll do ONE OF MY OWN CHARS. ^_^
I'm so brilliant, my dad calls me son. Who needs you people. ^^
