Please read the chart's introduction carefully before asking any questions. IMPORTANT: Mixed types (such as Filipinos) are not covered in these guides, SO DON'T ASK. The book version DOES include a discussion of the major mixed types, just to help you get on the right track. The book also has North Chinese as an extra type, and quite a few correction and extra details.

Sorry but I no longer take corrections on these tutorials so please don't bother. I can't accept any correction without cross-checking it with reliable sources, and as this was made in 2006, I no longer have the time or incentive to do that.

SOURCES:
I get frequently asked for the sources I used to gather this research. The nature of the internet is such that every time I have looked up my sources list since I made this guide, 7+ years ago, some of them have disappeared from the 'net, until the list was reduced to a single still functioning link. So I had better explain how it came together. Obviously, there is no one book presenting all this info, or I wouldn't have had to make the guide in the first place. The research was based on hundreds of small sources both off and online (in some cases from direct observation and asking tribespeople how they could tell other tribes apart), most focusing on just one type, or the difference between two types, or even just the beauty standards in one culture or the average height of the inhabitants of a country in the past decade, making it quite useless to list them. Some books I found online, such as The Racial Elements of European History (Hans F. K. Gûnther) and The Races of Europe (Carleton Stevens Coon) provided a framework for more in-depth research and cross-checking, and there was a specialized anthropological forum, DODONA: Human Biodiversity Discussion Forum, now defunct, that contained treasures of articles and photos, as well as frightfully knowledgeable people to whom I could ask direct questions. How to color like zammies

I use Photoshop7. You can do this layer trick in about any program. You don't need to have 7 or photoshop for that matter. I've done this in Open canvas too and I'm pretty sure painter would also let you but I don't like using painter.

And Another helpful tip is the hot keys. You can hit [ and ] on your keyboard and it will make your brush size change for you. This is very helpful. Control z is to undo but only once. I usually just use the history to go back on a mistake.

I guess I should mention too that you can use the fill bucket to fill in the color for better accuracy so that you wont miss a spot but I use my brush at such a giant size that it not a problem for me.

anndddddd because you are using ONE color on your shadow layer its not always going to work perfectly. So like say you have a dark blue as your shadow and the girls hair is dark too the shadow isnt going to show up as well like it would on the skin which is light. So what you want to do is go to the line art and select the part like say all her skin? and select it then go back to the layer with the shadows and go up to "image" and play with the brightness and contrast until you get it as light or as dark as you want!

note that you shouldnt always use this shading method. I really like playing with the color balance in the end anyway! These are just helpful tips hopefully making it easier for you to use photoshop and layers.

Lackadaisy Expressions

Boy, I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I started this. I've had requests for some sort of expressions tutorial dating back a while now, so I figured, "Sure! I can explain expression drawing...and I'll make it way better than all those tutorials out there that are nothing but charts of generic expressions. Yeah! Just give me a day or two to whip something up..."

Um. Sometime a lot more than two days later, I have this messy behemoth and the realization that I haven't a clue how to teach expression drawing. There's just so much material to cover, and so much of it is like intuitive language translation, I can't figure how to put it into tutorial form any more than I could draw a picture of how to speak Russian. I guess that's why expression tutorials are mostly just charts of what happy, sad, and confused look like.

Anyway, I found all I could really do was try to explain ways to teach yourself...and then add some pictures. Hopefully that makes for something at least marginally informative.

Oh damn, oh shit

Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).

I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

Even early versions of Photoshop can manage this, but it may be a pain to set up your brushes

Coloring technique

As I am becoming old and must pass my knowledge to the new generations, I wrote this little 29 pages long scripture trying to describe in details my coloring technique - finally a Flash version for DA :3

Though I avoided going into details such as light color variations, backgrounds and texturing.

I must accentuate that this is NOT a tutorial where you repeat something step by step, this is just a description of the possibilities and you'd probably have to read this lecture several times and make sure you don't skip anything.

Also I must say that this scripture is NOT entertainment. The actual entertainment will begin only after you eventually master this technique

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Will this tutorial work for Photoshop Elements?

A: Reportedly, yes. People mentioned that it works in Photoshop Elements 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0, so it should work in 6.0 and later as well.

Q: There's no Select > Load Selection... in the menu in Photoshop Elements.

A: You know when you have the lineart black'n'white on one single layer, not separated yet, try to Select > All, then go to Edit > Define Brush Preset, click OK to save it, then select brush tool, right-click on the canvas and select the last brush on the list, it should be your lineart converted into a brush stamp. Now just create a new layer and stamp your lineart onto it.

To change its color, right-click on the layer in the Layers panel, select Blending Options... then find Color Overlay on the left and select it, there you can choose a color for your lineart :3

Q: Where is the Burn Tool?

A: To find the Burn Tool press Shift+O multiple times to rotate the tools until the hand icon appears. I'm not sure what that hand was actually supposed to do in the designer's mind 9_9 but yeah, it's the burn tool. To quickly select it again, simply press O.

Q: Where is the Smudge Tool?

A: To find the Smudge Tool press Shift+R multiple times to rotate the tools until the pointing hand appears. To quickly select it again, simply press R. (Copying-'n'-pasting rocks :3)

Q: How can I clean up my sketch/lineart?

A: Sorry, in this tutorial I assume that you already have a clean lineart somehow :3 I have no experience in cleaning up sketches because I don't draw on paper, myself. But try using the search bar on deviantART to find the tutorial that might help you.

If something doesn't want to work

1. Re-read the text from the beginning without skipping anything. Most people who had problems with this tutorial, they actually just skipped this or that important part! If you get stuck in the beginning, try to perform these steps exactly:

1. Layer > Flatten Image
2. Image > Mode > Grayscale
3. Layer > New > Layer From Background
4. Select > Load Selection (set channel to "Background Gray" and check "Invert")
5. Now you should have the running ants across the edges of your lineart, that is, all the black pixels should become "selected".
6. While you have the selection: Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color (select black color)
7. After you created the fill layer, the selection should be gone, now run Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color (with white color)
8. Drag the "white" layer under the "black" layer.
9. Delete "Layer 0" as you won't need it anymore.
10. Image > Mode > RGB

In the end you should get a picture identical to your original lineart, but with all the black lines separated from the white background, so you can insert color-layers under the black lines but above the white background. Personally, I've just recorded an "action" that runs all the commands above automatically.

2. Make sure you use Photoshop 8.0 (aka CS) at least. Photoshop Elements 4.0 and higher should also work, although I haven't tested that myself. In Photoshop Elements the menus are probably a bit different, though.

3. Photoshop has a nice help system with a searching engine, so whichever isn't working, just press F1 and use Search, e.g. if you don't understand gradient maps, just type in "gradient maps" and read the articles -- the help section is designed to be user-friendly.

Tutorial: Saliva Painting

A step-by-step description of my indigenous pencil/aquarel/watercolor/digital painting technique. Years ago, after a violent sneeze, I discovered that one's saliva can mix with pencil and aquarel to yield acrylic-like results. The resulting goop can accept further detailing with pencil. Be sure to use a "spitoon" and avoid licking your brushes, so that you don't get lead poisoning. The subject is a heavyweight Snaiad herbivore of the genus Ungelephas.

Mis disculpas, como es medio grafico,doy las explicaciones aqui, onda los subtitulos

viñeta 1:Comienzo con un sketch bien sucio y basico en un layer nuevo... mas que nada buscar la pose para que el personaje quede puesto en todo el formato que vamos a usar. aqui no se hace nada en especial, sientanse libres y tiren rayas, lo ideal es soltarse.

viñeta 2: ahora pido un nuevo layer, le bajo la opacidad al boceto. y comienzo a entintar. Uso el brush por default de photoshop, eso si añado dinamics de forma y otras dinamicas en la caja de las brushes (esta en la esquina superior derecha de la pantalla de PS) al aplicar estos efectos, el pincel pasa de ser duro a ser suave y la tableta comienza a funcionar en base a la presion que ustedes apliquen, de esta manera se puede emular un look mas organico apliquen tambien a flow y opacity de brush, dejenlos en un rango entre el 80-90% para acentuar la presion de la tableta.... si quieren sentir un dibujo mas organico, prueben con colocar una hoja de papel roneo entre la tableta y el lapiz, notaran una diferencia

viñeta 3: Aqui comienza la etapa de "color"... pinto en escala de grises. por que se preguntaran? simple, el sol es nuestra unica fuente de luz, sin el todo seria oscuridad. la naturaleza funciona de esa forma "agregando luz a la sobmbra", es por ello que es mas facil agregar luces a un dibujo mas oscuro, que partir de una hoja en blanco. el color es un efecto secundario de la luz, el principal es producir volumenes. un poco como la musica donde existe el bajo y la melodia, uso dos tonos de gris, uno para el basico (que vendria a ser el bajo) y otro para la luz (que vendria a ser la melodia)... se capta la analogia? eso si, solo en una direccion (imitando el sol)

viñeta 4: ahora las sombras... aqui trato de no sobreproducir mucho, ya que facilmente muchas sombras mal puestas pueden quitarle equilibrio a la composicion. trato de evitar el exceso de negro a no ser que sea para representar una oscuridad total. como se pueden dar cuenta, las lines quedan un poco camufladas por la oscuridad... es una trampilla, eh?

viñeta 5: para que hice un dibujo entintado en un layer? para esta parte!, seleccionen el area, por ejemplo de la piel, pidan un layer nuevo y usen el tarro (en el layer nuevo) con el color que ustedes crean conveniente para la piel, lo mismo con el resto de los elemento... una vez que tengan ese layer con colores planos, denle opcion de multiply y bajenle la opacidad a unos 60-70%, donde el ojo les diga que se ve mejor. como pueden ver el color se blendea con los volumenes y voila. algunos elemenos como el escudo y la lanza los hice aparte.

viñeta 6: termio el personaje dandole algunos toques que lo sobresalgan un poco, como una luz secundaria (quien haya visto LOTR recordara facilmente su presencia), algunos puntos de luz, tipicos del anime y unas luces cyan de reflejo, que ayudan a restarle planitud a algunas areas. usualmente hago todo eso sobre el mismo layer del personaje, pero si gustan, pueden pedir un nuevo layer y bajarle la opacidad a un 90%, notaran que se blendearan mejor con el color. para suavizar algunas partes, uso la herramienta smudge. generalmente lo hago con el mismo pincel, pero ayuda para los detalles y el acabado. cuando estoy seguro, mezclo los layers (que en total deben ser el del dibujo y el de color) y aplico niveles o correcciones de color para que se lo mas cerca posible a lo que busco y listo... eso es todo amigos!
