Q+D Anatomy Lessons- Neck and Shoulders

Because you guys keep asking, and I keep promising to do some anatomy and pose tutorials. But when I got to thinking of all the things I wanted to tell you about drawing human anatomy, I realized it was going to take way too long to do in one tutorial. And it would have been huge. >_<

So I've decided to do these little tutorials about more specific areas of the human body. Mainly ones that get overlooked by a lot of aspiring artists, or that people make common mistakes with. I'm planning on doing ones for arms (how they move and connect to the shoulders), one for the torso and abdomen, and one for legs. Hands/feet and faces may come after that, and I'd like to do a tutorial on posing your characters... or maybe just another sheet of gesture drawings. XD

P.S. I forgot, there's a 4th forgotten bump on the profile! It's the Adam's Apple, which is of course only present on men. It's very defined on some guys, and hardly present on others. When it's overly pronounced, it almost makes the neck "vulture-like" is shape.

I get requests for tutorials on how to translate real people into more stylized but recognizable versions fairly often, so here is a very wordy/slapped together tutorial for how I study faces! Specifically for how I go about breaking up the face into simple shapes and ratios that are easy to carry over into different styles.

I used Chris Pine because I havent drawn him before, and I figured it would make the process more genuine.

EDIT: So this has been up for ages and I didn't think it needed to be said, but apparently some people are confused. This isn't saying "just trace a photo"! The tracings here are meant to show how I break the face up into different shapes. Knowing how to see the face as shapes makes it a lot more accessible and easier to portray in different styles. If you simply trace a photo instead of learning how to draw it on your own, you'll have a very hard time injecting your style and energy into it, and the end result will probably be very stiff and lack expression.

Here's a few other examples of how learning to identify shapes and relationships can help you translate faces into different styles, ranging from semi-realistic to way more stylized. And don't be afraid to stress the unique qualities and variety in individual faces!

WARNING! BIG FILE TO DOWNLOAD AND ENJOY!

Excuse the lazy handwriting... I decided to draw up some tips for drawing girls, since I _think_ I know what I'm doing with them. A lot of peeps have asked for them, so here's a bit. Will have a male one when I get really confident with the dudes (which i'm progressing nicely in that area), but for now, this will suffice.

Let me know if there are any questions you have or anything else you'd like me to show you that's reasonable. But just remember that you have to learn and study for yourself to get the idea.

REMEMBER, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE STUDY RESEARCH PRACTICE!

Other Tips:

- Using shapes for your gestures beats stick figure methods! Read this: [link]
- Draw constantly. Don't just look at what you're working on, study it! Learn why certain things connect the way they do, what muscles get tense in a position and relaxed, etc. Don't just draw what you see.
- Come up with your own visual cues to help you "see" how a form works, like the McDonald's Arches and Megaman Boot. You'd be surprised how easy it is for you to remember how something looks!
- With women, remember, dainty and curvy lines beats hard edgy lines! No matter the size of woman's breasts or hips or proportions, these things always apply best: Hands with less lines, thinner fingers and smaller feet. Using line minimally also bumps femininity up if you're not confident with what you're doing yet. And curves always! Even on the straightest line, make it a bit curvy.

Over the past three years I've done loads of successful commissions, and have commissioned others successfully as well. I have never had an issue with my transactions because I did my research before I started, and asked others who were doing commissions themselves how they were managing. However, not everyone has the time to go and note everyone (or, if you're getting noted, you may not have time to answer inquiries constantly)! So for your perusal and reference, here are some helpful tips to help you get started with taking commissions on DA.

This tutorial is more for people who offer commissions, but I have a few words for those who take them as well:

- Do your research. Make sure you're getting art from a reliable artist!
- Art costs money. Don't haggle down, its insulting. Don't forget, you're also getting free advertising when they post it to their gallery (for example, who here doesn't know *Audley's Castor ;3 )
- Don't be afraid to pimp the artists who did good work for you! Here is my list!

I'm a huge texture user if you couldn't tell lol, and I thought I'd share some of the textures I've made and use in my work~ So here are 7 paper textures using watercolor and india ink! I hope you'll all find them as useful as I do~

They're all in jpg format so you can just open up straight-away in Photoshop or any other program you're using. They're all different sizes, and 300dpi resolution so they'll work on even some of the larger canvases.

Rules - If you use them, please give me credit and a link back to either this deviation or my page would be greatly appreciated! You can use these for anything you want, including commercial work. The only thing I don't allow is selling the textures exactly as they are, so please don't.

Since I know I won't have time to paint you a pretty Christmas pic this year (like the other years before), I would at least share with what I create my pictures.
This is one small bunch of my selfmade custom brushes for Photoshop.

Some brushes can be a pain in the bum to use especially because their texture and style is so distinctive that changing brushes whilst painting can turn into a negative part of creating an image for the starters among the digital artists.

So I tried to create brushes that are simple to use for shading, detailing, etc.

I hope you enjoy, my dears.

How to load brushes into your program:

- Select the brush tool or hit the key "B" to select the tool.

- Click next to the arrow of the shown brush on the upper tool bar to open the "Brush Preset Picker".

- click the small arrow on the right side next to where you see the pixel size.

- then select "Load Brushes" and choose the files.

- there you go! The brushes will be loaded underneath all your other brushes.

Textured Marker Brush V.3

Here is version 3 of my marker brush. I tweaked it a lot, and added a new texture to it. This will be the final version.

Here are some things you can mess with in the brush settings that might help:

-In textures, increase/decrease the depth.
-Turn on scattering for a cool "watercolor-y splotch" effect.
-Turn on/off airbrushing
-Turn on/off wet edges

Please credit with a link back here if you use it, so that more people can come download and try.

And while I guess I can't MAKE you link me to every piece of art you make with it...(ehehehe....) I REALLY love seeing the pieces make with it!! Thanks

It's not easy, but yes, you can. The result might not be exactly the same but you can get a similar work. But you have to arrange the transparency and other features of each brush to achieve certain effects. How? Well, i don't know, i don't paint with my mouse for more than 3 years so i forgot how to do it.

"CAN I USE THIS WITH OTHER PROGRAMS?"
Yes, you can. Not everything, but at least the coloring technique.

"WHITE LAYER AND DARK LAYER... I JUST DON'T GET IT"
[link] check this small pic to understand how to arrange them. Why do i use them? As you see, i paint and my color doesn't respect the lineart at first, so i erase later... to find every part that i wanna erase, instead looking at a white background i use the dark layer. Also, if the white layer is well done enough, i can select it, invert it and erase the parts that i don't need without using the eraser -which takes more time-
=A= well... as it's kinda hard to explain and stuff... I've made another pic to explain it as a step by step... Some of you might notice the good side of using both... if you don't it's fine... that step is optional anyway. [link]

Check out 'Classic Human Anatomy: An Artist's Guide to Form, Function, and Movement' by Valerie L. Winslow if you want a really good book for these sorts of things.

Here's a tasty and stylish pencil brush for all your photoshop sketching needs! Have nearly all the deliciousness of real pencil on paper minus the paper and plus the undo (but real men just erase and redraw, like a boss).

This brush for PS is handy for doing more visually interesting sketches that can add a nice layer of texture for you to paint on top of, as well as just making nicer looking digital drawings. Get some grit in those lines!

TO INSTALL:

1. Download the Pencil_Brush_by_Andantonius.abr file by pressing, "Download" to the right of this deviation.

2. Copy Pencil_Brush_by_Andantonius.abr to /Adobe/Adobe Photoshop (Path may vary depending on operating system, and, "Adobe Photoshop" will change depending on what version you have)

3. Start (Or restart if it's already open) Photoshop.

4. To select the pencil brush, simply click on the arrow on the right-hand side of the brush selection menu. Then, from the drop-down menu, select, "Pencil".

5. Draw till your fingers bleed!

I finally replaced that dreadful preview image with an actually semi-decent drawing, a quick study of a Prud'hon figure. I also removed all the business about the sketch paper action from both the download and the description cause it was confusing and not actually very helpful. The brush itself is still the same, just with a nicer example of its usage and a less confusing installation process! Enjoy!

If you're not a big fan of coffee, ~lunabellvarga suggests using less coffee and more chocolate I'm sure it would taste very good too!

Tiramisu is one of my favorite desserts. Well it was probably easy to guess, it's no secret now that I'm addicted to coffee... my boyfriend likes it so much that I have to hide it or he'll eat it all.

Tiramisu is quite easy to make, but there's something that feels "fancy" about it. Maybe it's the texture, it has an incredible creamy texture that contrasts with the cookies in a very interesting way. I can't find the words to describe it, so you'll have to try it!

Please let me know if you like it! I forgot to mention that you can also use chocolate shavings as garnish, I'll update the tutorial later.

NOTE: I know that a lot of people don't like to eat raw eggs and I respect that

She started off as a sketch in a giant moleskine sketchbook that my boyfriend bought me for my birthday. Then I fleshed her out a bit more and discovered her personality was a bit melancholy.

Sitting on a blue tartan rug on her bedroom floor playing sad songs on her record player, listening to that warm crackle on albums like 'Sad Songs For Rainy Days' and bands like 'Yoyo Noyo' and 'Kora'.

Sad Mona is not only a character in an illustration and a little paper model, she's a part of me captured in a moment of vulnerability. Letting music do it's thing, alone and open.

WITH THE FRIZZ??? NO WAYYY!!!!

Oh, the 90s. Every cartoon toted educational messages, often preachy and heavy-handed and sometimes awkward. With all of this wonderful ridiculousness, a show like The Magic School Bus was really welcome. It actually taught you something useful AND was fun. You never felt like someone was speaking down to you, and you just envied the small class size and the budget-bursting field trip take on 'different ways of learning.' Shit, all we got to do was make the occasional collage.

Seriously though, it was a damn cool show. Anything that involves a sentient magical bus driven by a crazy witch lady and her biologically engineered super-lizard flying children around space and lower intestines is kind of worth watching. I also always loved the bit at the end, where 'real kids' asked questions about the episode, and pointed out things that couldn't have actually happened. It was a great way of covering their ass, and making us feel smart.

Poor, poor Arnold though. He wasn't psychologically able to cope with the mad shit storm of hands-on learning. You'd think that kid would have transferred to another class or something. You know, give some other kid the chance to RIDE AROUND ON A MAGIC SUPER BUS INSTEAD OF SITTING IN A CLASSROOM. What a douche.

REQUEST: PLEASE DON`T POST SPOILERS FOR THE END OF FMA IN YOUR COMMENTS! Some of us haven`t read it to the end...

Anyway. Big fans of Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye from FMA, as even though they`ve killed a lot of innocent folk (sniff!), they still manage to be pretty good people underneath it all. I`m a sucker for characters who get caught up in an evil machine (in this case, the military) and struggle to keep their souls amidst it all. I`ve no idea if they`ll end up together (NO SPOILERS PLS), but I hope they do.

I can`t wait for the next volume of this series! I love it so much.

I'm having such an art block, guys. Somehow though, I got tickled by inspiration today and whipped up this peculiarness.

I do have a guilty love for cheesy, sparkly new age-type stuff. The one-eyed panther is a cosmic being I described in a poem once. An incarnation of the embracing night, the moon and the stars. Something like that. I regret the ears, but like the overall swirliness.

Materials used: Ink, Indigo watercolour, white gouache, Tipex, Bristol board.
