An experiment for =faestock 's biweekly challenge, I decided to break out the watercolors and see what I could do in a sort of Mucha-inspired art noveau style. I think it came out okay--the composition turned out nice, the execution was okay (I haven't used watercolors in about 15 years), but I still feel that the background could use ....something. This is a learning piece, so any constructive criticism or input is welcome

Good Cheer. Done in a style very much influenced by the work of Alfonse Mucha, but hopefully with a little of my own style in there too. The original, along with the other two, Mirth and Beauty will be for sale at Dragoncon, which is in one week, in Atlanta, GA.

Omnia's new album "Wolf Love" came out last weekend, and the song "Wheel in Time" has been stuck in my head and made me cry a good few times because of recent events that have been happening to me. It just hit the arrow right home.

I wanted to make an illustration to the song, get the feelings down on paper. But decided that my Bodhran (irish drum) had been left untouched by my art for too long.. and it seemed right

And so, I incorporated it with my love for Art Nouveau/Jugendstil. This is the end result.

Done with alcohol markers on goatskin drum.

Oh my god you guys, I love Utena so much. ;____; You don't even know. I love Utena more than most humans. On the scale of animes that have effected me deeply and shaped my personality, it is tied in my heart with Gundam Wing, which is saying something. Utena is why I check the little box that says "boy/girl" with the "Fuck you I'm a Prince" option. She is my absolute hero. I just rediscovered this by watching the series for the first time (I read the manga when I was a kid), and I'm a little bit twitterpated....
And-- I hope you are too! Over whatever it is you treasure from your childhood. It is the best. Everyone should have something like that. What are yours? : D Tellmetellmetellme *guuussshhh*

Media: India ink on hot press watercolor paper

In folklore and mythology herons are frequently seen as messengers. They can also symbolize a change in luck.

I painted this piece for my holiday card this card this year, and it was a bit of a change of pace, being all traditional media instead of mostly digital. I bought a set of Dr. Ph. Martins Bombay india inks earlier this year, and Id been looking for an opportunity to do a complete painting with them. Theyre very similar to working with watercolors.

This is a commission piece for based on her character Mircalla.

Part of the request was to include details about the Hight Priestess, incorporating many symbols. My forte if you will.

1. From the navel up, the figure is all curves, representing softness, femininity, yin, and carried into the curvy sleeves, wavy hair, etc.

The yang, from the navel down, the lines are (for the most part) straight, representing strength and masculine, thus the skirt spreading straight out.

2. There are more yin\yang representations. The sun/moon share that equal balance in strength and softness: The dragon/sun, the phoenix/moon, the eye of Ra.
Her belt has crescent moon shapes dangling as well.

3. The crystals represent the multifaceted aspects of intuition. The round crystal nestling under the phoenix; has her emotional intuition. While the diamond crystal that the dragon is clutching signifies her spiritual insight.

4. Since Mircalla is the mistress of life and death, there are several depictions of it repeated through out the picture;
The black and white ball shows the darkness in death and light in life. Then, skulls with the lilies sprouting, from death comes life that leads to death, reincarnation for some or natural order to others.

5. Mircalla is a seeker of knowledge, and loves butterflies and lilies. Her hair is filled with lilies, butterflies floating around it, the belt has an owl representing knowledge.

6. The five daggers represent not only her choice of weapons, but the five elements (air, water, fire, earth, lightning). The elements seem to represent the balance of the natural order that her knowledge has made her aware of.

I enjoyed doing this piece because it has helped me to diversify my artistic plate.

Another piece from my gender illustration class. It's an affirmation of birth control as the glorious victory that it is. (!)

It's the goddess Nike (referenced from the statue Nike of Samothrace, and rendered art-nouveau style) holding aloft the small package of birth-control pills and braced by a wave of condoms. Yes, they are condoms. And yes, I am crazy, because I rendered them all.

This has killed me. I've always admired Alfons Mucha for the works he has done, I could spent 5 hours straight looking at his painting.

So I've tried to inspired me of all this "Art Nouveau" and to do some with my own style. It was long, veeeerrry long. But I'm so happy as the result looks fantastic for me, as I'm not accustomed to the watercolors. And after doing this I can confirm that geometry isn't my speciallity LOL

It's gonna be printed into some posters that the association AL'EA is gonna sale this autumn.

*dances* Ok this is my second entry for contest "Masters in fantasy" to be found here [link] .

I went in a WHOLE new direction for this one, and instead of going with a classical painting, I went for Art Nouveau. This is my rendition of Alphonse Muchas lithograph print you can see here [link]

I couldn't find a title for this work, so if anyone knows the name of the original piece I'd very much like to know.

so anyway even though Mucha is not really considered one of the "old masters" I think he is a master in his own right, developing an entirely new genre with his art and influencing a whole era of artists, and continuing to do so. SO this was super fun to do but it took me a lot of time, planning and line work etc... my hands hurt lol. and, im not sure what shes holding. it was supposed to be a 'sea flower' of sorts but kinda looks like a giant dandy lion XD lol oh well.

So, as usual, while I should be doing a bajillion other things, this piece has demanded my attention like a screaming two-year-old. You can ignore her for a while, but eventually you just give her the cookie so she'll shut up.

Again, this is a "remake" of Alphonse Mucha's "Dance." You can start to see some of the changes a little more clearly here. One of my main goals was to make it so the thick outlines didn't flatten the image (as it does in Mucha's) but rather add depth. I think I succeeded, except for the ends of the hair. They should appear to be coming towards you, but I couldn't bring myself to make the lines thicker towards the ends, it just looked silly. Oh well. I'll do something in the color version to make it clearer.

I've always thought that this was the most "vulnerable" stage of a piece, all bare skeleton. The sketch is diaphonous, so you can pick whichever line is right, and once the color is on it looks fabulous enough that you don't notice the flaws. But still, I'm pretty happy with it.

I haven't decided how I want to color it yet. To scrounge up ideas, I'm submitting this to the to see what other people come up with. If you're coloring this, please give me credit in your desc and provide a link to your version in the comments here (I'll probably fav it). Please, please don't steal this. It would make me very sad. And make my paranoia worse.

I love the art-nouveau style, and Diana's been needing her own portrait for a while. ^__^ Lots of symbolism in this, and a little something to represent each of the men in her life (the chain represents Luke, heh...those of you who know this couple will understand).
