A drive through Nummy Island proved to be productive as far as long-legged waders went - it was full of Great and Snowy Egrets and Great Blue Heron. We also had very pleasant surprises with a couple of Tricolored Heron and one Little Blue Heron. This Snowy Egret became very territorial when another would go near him. He was also a very animated fisherman!

These are the two 18-month old cheetah brothers. Fritzi is the yawning one and the right one is Hannibal.
Have you known that male cheetahs are sometimes found in groups in the wild? They're mostly brothers but also other male cheetahs might join them. These cheetah groups are usually small having two or three cheetahs but even bigger has been seen with more than 10 cheetahs!

Otter Squabble

Most adorable interactions of otters ever! After feeding time the youngest otters (the eldest was in the middle of the pool doing some vigorous grooming) paired up and wrestled in the water. I don't think I've ever seen otters that active. I've seen active otters but this was soo much adorable chaos! I think I caught some video of the action that will be uploaded later.

Oriental White Backed Vulture.
Added text for the International Vulture Awareness Day contest held by *meihua

"Three species of south Asia's vultures are critically threatened with extinction in the near future. We have to act now to save these birds.

The Oriental white-backed vulture was so abundant in India in the 1980s that it was probably the most common large bird of prey in the world. Only one in a thousand now survives, a 99.9% decline for this species.

All three species - the Oriental white-backed, the long-billed and the slender-billed vulture - have declined by more than 97% since the early 1990s.

This shocking decline is because of a veterinary drug, diclofenac, which is toxic to any vulture that feeds on the carcass of recently treated cattle."

Of course, the near disappearance of the vultures is having a devastating effect on the environment. Vultures are vital to keep ecosystems healthy and dispose of carcasses.

_{In Mumbai, the lack of vultures in carcass dumps leads the dogs to take their place, which has caused the population to explode. Leopards are lured into the cities by the dogs, which are easy prey, and encounters with humans is now common... as well as inevitable attacks on humans.}

But all hope is not lost! Some surviving individuals are now being bred in captivity with success and the Indian Government has banned the drug, Diclofenac. However, people continue to use the drug, so ridding it from all markets, in which the drug is still being sold, is vital. With the drug still being used on cattle, the vultures cannot be released back into the wild.

Recently, a couple of wild rabbits decided to build a burrow on the orchard in order to increase the family. It caught my eye how easy was to confuse the bunnies with the ground, I think it's amazing how mother nature can create animals so well camouflaged in the environment.

These 2 Belgian Draft horses were at a horse event called Jumpin' de Weel near Nisse, The Netherlands. They showed alot of oldfashioned stuff, and these horses were here together with their owner, showing what these horses used to do for work in the old days. I love the power and calmness these horses have.

The Belgian Draft horse is a draft horse breed from the Brabant region of modern Belgium, where it is called the Cheval de trait belge or in Dutch: Belgisch Trekpaard. It is one of the strongest of the heavy breeds. Belgians are still used as working animals, but have also become popular as show horses, and pleasure riding horses.

The photograph above was taken at a horse fair in Belgium to show and represent what a Belgian Draft horse was capable of and also expected to do long ago when working animals was all you had to complete your farm work. Some of these horses are still used for hard labour but these days most of the horses are now used as show horses.
These are not my favorite type of horses but they are growing on me rapidy. lol I now live in Belgium with my husband. His father own 13 of these horses and takes them all as show horses. He owns one of the best Stallions in Belgium who placed 1st at Nationals for his year. I'm surrounded by these horses here and I love it!

The Camargue horse is the traditional mount of the gardians, the Camargue "cowboys" who herd the black Camargue bulls used in bullfighting in southern France. Delaney Rim Gold 1945

This is a 24 x 36 commissioned Oil of Desert Dust. Desert Dust was a wild stallion captured in 1945 in the Delaney Rim area of Wyoming. The photos taken of him brought about his fame, as well as the eventual movement to save the wild horses of the western United States. Unfortunately - there are no other photos of him other than the black and white ones taken in 1945, a lot of which have been hand tinted (even worse as a reference). What I set out to do with this painting was to take the general stance of the horse in 1945, and bring him to life. The photos are not very clear of course, so a lot of research was required to get an idea of what Desert Dust actually looked like, his markings and color etc. Plus, I did a lot of research on what color the rocks of Delaney Rim are. One of the main things that I found out - the tips of his ears were FROZE OFF. Not uncommon for a wild horse - but someone not knowing that may think that my depiction of him looks odd. This is the medieval warhorse, used in a time when horses were used for everything - travel, farming, competing, fighting. This was a time where the horse was not just a plaything for the rich or a sport to enjoy on the weekends; they were survival. This picture features not a particular breed (though I believe this horse is a Friesian) so much as the spirit of the past and what these horses meant.

Subject: Two Snow Leopard Cubs

These two were brilliant to photograph and so much fun to watch. They are just at that age where the world's not so scary but life's still one big game. You've got to feel sorry for the cub at the bottom, happily minding his own business and then 'bam', he gets pounced on and then the other cub went and lay right on top of him.

This is my 300th deviation. Woo!

Taking a walk through a Nature Preserve not far from home (Guana Wildlife & Nature Preserve ~ Florida) & happened upon this Whitetail Deer. . . .obviously she didn't like having her picture taken. . . I really don't know who was more surprised though between the two of us. . . We have been going to this Preserve for 4 years now & this is the closest I have ever been to one of these Beauties. . .
