Maybe once a year, twice if i have time and inclination...
But this was a special project. This is the first time i have experimented with the use of an armature.
I made a very basic wire 'skeleton' for this using a schleich model lion for size reference, before covering the wire in foil to bulk it out a bit. Once i felt there was enough but not too much meat on the bones, i got stuck in with the super sculpey. Now, i have two large packets of sculpey, and i found they're both different... one is white, the other this 'ceramic' sculpey. I chose this one cause it was softer.
And im glad i did, it was wonderful to work with. Ive only ever used sculpey 3, the stuff that comes in two ounce colours like fimo. Im disenchanted with it simply because the colours have inconsistant workability properties (e.g. gold is too soft and black too firm and inflexible, and then everything in between) but this ceramic substitute super sculpey was lovely to work with, and over the armature i had none of my old troubles of delicate floppy models that i would squish the details out of while i worked on them. Hence the jump in quality here.

I still have a ways to go, im well aware of the flaws. My armature was, if anything, TOO big and bulky, and stuck out too far in places (you can see the foil under the skin in places, like behind the ears and in the tail) also im still not perfect with my anatomy. The feet im not happy with, the back legs are a little too long, i have issues with the neck and forelegs, and the tail is... frankly a shambles.
I mean, strictly speaking the anatomy boundaries are stretched with Aranum anyway, because she's got cheetah inflections in her phisique from her chion curse, so she's suposed to be skinnier and less bulky than a lion (and then there's the mane, which im actually REALLY proud of ) but i still feel she's not quiiiite spot on.
The tail base i can explain. It should come out higher, but the problem is in my wire frame, which i foiled up too much at the base, i could not raise it to be level with the spine like it ought to be, so... forgive me
I went to great trouble with the paw pads, all in vain cause they got sorta flattened anyway The toes on the front supporting paw are too small and short.
The front foot's frame was never right so neither is it...

and yet

despite all these flaws, i still love it ^.^

and i can't wait to paint it!

So yea, all anatomy was from my head, the only reference i used from the schleich lion figurine was for muscle dips on the skin surface cause i dunno where the muscles underneath run *needs to read up on her feline anatomy* and the basic frame i modelled on the proportions... which ended up bigger and different anyway, but i planned for them too, cause schliech models, ive come to realise, are DODGY yes they is.

The camera flash murdered it, you lose ALL DETAIL D8
I mean she has whisker pores and teeth and cheeckbones and fur detail (in places) and claw sheathes and teeth and tits (yes tits...well, teats. very small ones) and all that muscle contour detail is compleeeetely gone :C
But still better than what my old camera could have done.
The idea struck me while rooting through my father's scrap-metal pile on the farm this summer (2005). At first, I was going to make a painting of a turkey (which I may still do) using pieces of junk to help define it's contours on a flat surface. I was also going to use multiple material, besides just metal, for the reason that it would be much too heavy to hang on a wall if I didn't. However, as the pile of cool, patinaed metal parts that I found kept growing, I decied I would weld the piece together completely out of steel junk.

Of particular note; every piece of this sculpture is a used farm implement, I used no "bulk" pieces of steel (like lengths of rod, or sheets to be cut into shape) everything was found in the junk pile. The starting-block for the whole thing is/was a large cultivator "disc". Onto that I started welding all sorts of neat things, including (but not limited to): cultivator shovels, swather sickels, ball bearings, zero-till shovels, swather gaurds, chain length, zero-till disks & blades, exhaust pipe and a spade. You may also notice the prominant gear, that acts as part of the wing. I'm not sure, but it may be an antique from somthing my grandfather once operated (I could be talking out of my ass though).

Those of you who are true "farm kids" will have fun trying to pick out which parts are what. Though I hope the subject in itself is rather obvious; a full-feathered male turkey. I, of course, worked from a real turkey that I know personally. His name is Tom, and he is one of the nicest birds I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I've been wanting to capture him in drawing and/or painting for a while now, but this turned out even better.

I used my father's mig welder, and made very little attempt to hid any of the welding process. I remember a few years ago, in a sculpture class at RDC, I spent hours grinding down every evidence of welding from my steel pieces. Then, an instructor came up to me and said: "You know, working in steel is a lot like drawing. The welds are kind of like the little fingerprints and smudge marks that you see when you look for them. They don't take away from the piece as a whole, in fact, they exist as evidence of the artist's hand in the work. It is through them that you are connected to the process." Actually, I may have elaborated what he said a little bit. But the principle was there. And as such, I freely welded and grinded as I saw fit without fear of leaving these tell-tale marks.

Something I knew I wanted to do, even before I started on the piece, was to make use of the metal's natural weathered patina. I didn't want to "cover up" what the piece was made of, in fact I wanted to celebrate it. So, when the whole thing was done, I covered it in three layers of "Rust Coat" clear; a metal varnish that helps prevent rusting (or in this case, further rusting) as it sits outside. It also gave it the heavy gloss that you see. This way, the material is apparent, but it is still weather-proof.

It took a couple days to make, and I definately became a better welder out of it. Though the piece itself is a little on the "kitschy" side, I am still quite proud of the detail and work gone into it. It is completely referential to my life and family's life on the farm, made from pieces of it, no less. And it is a portrait of one of it's most prominent residents.
Edit June 29/2005:
Daliy Deviation? Gee... it's an honor I guess. My first one ever. I guess I should have figured that I wouldn't get one until I did a piece of a cutesy farm animal.
