Finally got around to really polishing up some images from this day. Processed a couple of them up to print quality, so this one is now available for sale! [link] This was one of my absolute favorite days from 2011, and it was on a local chase! The chase mostly busted, but when we got back to Omaha we were treated to this- more than made up for the chase!

It's not easy getting to Caño Cristales. A 3-hour bus drive preceded a day's stay in Villavicencio, after the flight was cancelled due to the most insane rain I'd ever seen. Then a scary flight in what I'd best describe as a "flying bus" to La Macarena, a small village in the middle of the Colombian Jungle, then finding a guide to take us there, then a 20 minute boat-ride, 30 minute car ride and 30 minute walk just to get to the river.
But this is no ordinary stream. Hailed as the world's most beautiful river, and called "the river of seven colors", Caño Cristales is definitely a natural wonder. For a limited time each year, the river floor is covered with red algae, turning it into a rare spectacle indeed. Add to this the tens of waterfalls, each more beautiful then the other, and the clearest, most amazing water I'd ever seen, and reach the colclusion that this is a must-visit place, inspite of all the hardship.

After 10 days in the breathtaking beautiful Northern Norway I now present the first photographic work.
You can see here a typical-striking Lofoten-mountain, which I found in a bay near Unstadvika.
In early February, the sun is still all day extremely deep and enchants us with a monumental light mood.

With the aim of shooting some Scottish Landscapes in dynamic weather I started my trip to Great Britain in mid-November and traveled for about 5 weeks trough the country. My journey took me from the south coast of England via Northumberland to Scotland. In Scotland I traveled from the Isle of Skye to Caithness, Torridon and Assynt. As expected the weather conditions were very contrary (snow, sun, storm, rain). The exposed position at the Atlantic Ocean is responsible for the unpredictable weather in western Scotland. Often its possible to experience several seasons within one day. Although it often wasnt very easy to keep my camera dry, I was rewarded with a variety of spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

In the second part of my UK-series 2013, I present the images of the Isle of Skye. The fascinating hills and the impressive coastline are typical for the Scottish landscape. The weather was as expected at the end of November very rough. During my ten-day stay there was no day without rain and storm. But in the rare minutes when the sun showed the landscape turned into a fairy tale world and I was spectacular rewarded for the long rainy waiting times. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

Often its possible to experience several seasons within one day. Although it often wasnt very easy to keep my camera dry, I was rewarded with a variety of spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

In the second part of my UK-series 2013, I present the images of the Isle of Skye. The fascinating hills and the impressive coastline are typical for the Scottish landscape. The weather was as expected at the end of November very rough. During my ten-day stay there was no day without rain and storm. But in the rare minutes when the sun showed the landscape turned into a fairy tale world and I was spectacular rewarded for the long rainy waiting times. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

This is a pretty atmospheric detail of the Fanes group (Dolomites), photographed while hiking up towards Mount Lagazuoi (2.778 m).

The sun was setting so the atmosphere became quite "hot" as usually happens in the Alps (in any mountain in the world, to be precise). Alpenglows are always very evocative.

I was going to spend the night in these places... the Lagazuoi refuge was fortunately closed, so I've been greeted up there by the most absolute calm.
An otherworldly, silent, a bit eerie place... just the perfect place to be!

   During my stay in Preston earlier this year I drove up to Yorkshire a few times to explore the countryside and as per usual in the UK I was haunted by rain - which didn't keep me from trying though it was demotivating. Luckily I went up to Twistleton on a relatively dry day and on my way passed by some of the famous limestone pavements. My original plan was to hike the Ingleton Waterfalls trail that weekend but due to the massive flooding it was not possible to get any decent shots, so I simply changed routes and went up to to Twistleton Scar.

   While shooting the limestone pavements heavy clouds with rain rolled in from the ocean (which lies just a couple of miles west) dissembling the sky and providing me with a nice ominous sky for this black and white shot. Sadly though the rest of my ascent was accompanied by fierce rain and wind keeping me from getting any shots from farther up.

Here you can see the gorgeous Vajolet Towers, in their world famous southern side.
The clouds, which moved very quickly, are magically stretched due to a slightly long exposure taken before dawn, at the Passo di Laurino (2.621 m), in the heart of the Catinaccio (Rosengarten), Dolomites.

The moon was heading to the west, over the Croda di Re Laurino, so behind me and my camera, freeing the towers from darkness with some sort of feeble light, veiled by an ever-changing ocean of mist that for all night had silently wrapped the entire area... in a hushed otherworldly atmosphere...
The sun had not yet risen, but a far presence of light was coming from the east, providing three-dimensionality to the swirling clouds around the towers.

To be precise, this is a vertical composition thought as a possible alternative to a previous horizontal take. ]]> Click here to buy a print of this photo

The nearest major town is L'anse, MI. Several miles of confusing two tracks will eventually lead you to a very small closed bridge. From there a few miles of hiking down stream will take you to this fall.

Technical details: Canon 7D, Canon 10-22mm lens (@13mm), 3-stop neutral density filter, circular polarizer filter, ISO 100, F/11, two image hand blend, one for the flow of water, one for the forest and foliage. ]]>

It already was very late in the evening, when i decided to head towards Aldeyarfoss after the Godafoss shooting, to give me the opportunity of a good sunrise next morning.
I drove over 40 km in the late twilight on a rough track to finally reach Aldeyarfoss at the edge of the highland while it was almost dark.
Weatherforecast was not sure. I tried to sleep as so often in the positive hope.
5:00 am was time to get up. While i peered out of the window i couldn´t believe how beautiful the sky already was. My adrenaline helped me to get up as quickly and i hurried down to the waterfall. Dark clouds appeared from behind and it already began to dribble. I really was in a rush to get a good photo. Five minutes later, the spell was broken and I was a happy guy

. As the adrenaline wore off, I exhausted went back to the car.

A sea of clouds, exposed to the south-east, is lit by the moon (63%) rising in the east.
Yes, a huge mass of clouds slipping down steep rocky ridges from a height of about 2.900 meters.

Shot taken at night on September 6th 2012, from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m), Italy.

This is one of the most otherworldly photograph I've taken so far. Thanks to the intrinsic magic of the night and to the privilege of being there, silently admiring this amazing moment.

This 195 seconds exposure, at 115mm on full frame, turned the slow passage of the clouds in a sort of "silky waterfall".
A few star trails are already visible, despite the exposure wasn't particularly long. I guess we all know as the consequences of Earth's rotation are more obvious when using a telephoto lens.
Intensity of colors, contrast and white balance are strongly faithful to the scene.

Main mountains here visible are the Uia Ciamarella (3.676), P.ta d'Arnas (3.560) and, at the horizon, the south-west face of Gran Paradiso (4.061), companion of many adventures

Of course i don´t want to deprive you not this gigantic "almost" arctic sunrise.
Thanks to my extreme wide angle I could bring the Kirkjufellfalls with the Kirkjufell in the background and the rising sun on one photo.
You are on the legendary Peninsula Snaefellsness in Iceland.

It was already very late as i came to this strange looking coastline on the southwestern part of ICELAND´s Westfjords.
In short sections, a strong wind from the sea swept over the grassy landscape, leaving me only a few seconds to get a sharp photo.
I really felt overwhelmed, because i´ve never seen such a wondrous shoreline.
After I finished with the wind, I was able to photograph a couple of different perspectives and then went back to sleep in the car.

This image is the perfect example of an important compositional lesson in landscapes that I always teach to clients. If there is not much interest in the sky then you don't need anything more than a sliver of sky to give the image a 'ceiling'. Interest doesn't necessarily refer to clouds as you often get great colour gradients even without clouds.
