I have very nearly zero formal education in the arts, so whilst I ramble about theory today, you must forgive me if I use some terms incorrectly. Nevertheless, I think you will get the gist of what I'm saying. And for hardcore arts people, I'm sure you will have heard this all before. Bear with me, every so often I must talk these things through.

So, you may or may not have noticed, but I've been having a stylistic identity crisis. Maybe crisis is the wrong word. I'd like it to be resolved, but there's no imminent danger.

If you've been following my blog/DA for any length of time, you'll notice that I draw in a lot of different styles. Just the last few entries should make that apparent. I don't think there's anything wrong with drawing in different styles, but I have been struggling with a more unified overall approach, and I think I need to figure out which style I'm going to focus on and attempt to master.

I've been attempting to move towards streamlined shapes with a lot of energy, which goes against literally decades of focusing on details and structure. When I was younger, I fixated more so on drawing things "right." But you can draw something completely "right" with every detail in place, and it will still lack that undefinable thing that makes a piece of art interesting. And something that's sort-of related to that--I've really become opposed to fussiness in drawing. I still like complexity. And I certainly don't want to dumb things down. But fussy character design or composition is never a good thing.

I tend to get bogged down with details, so today's piece was a bit of a style test. I wanted to draw some Transformers in a more streamlined and dynamic manner, without being such a slave to detail and geometry.

In regards to what I'm trying to achieve, I don't think it worked. As a stand alone thing, the piece is decent enough, but Optimus still looks pretty stiff, and in the end, I still got a little hung up on details. However, on the plus side, the drawing itself didn't take long at all. (Coloring it still took me forever because I'm slooow.)

I had some crazy ideas for this cover, but since Nickelodeon has to approve it, the editor reeled me in a bit. They are looking for more static cool shots of the characters. Even though it's a generic shot, I'm really happy with the opportunity.

PS - Nelson Daniel did an absolutely amazing job coloring it. We are really becoming seamless. ]]>

This was a piece I did for one of my best friends ever. We go WAY back ... and I'm talking KINDERGARTEN back! lol Also, I owe my comic book fascination to him, really. He got me into comics back in Junior High when we used to create our own mutants to fight alongside the X-Men, which introduced me to the incredible art of Jim Lee. And now, here I am! Wanna know something cool? I just had lunch with Jim yesterday. Crazy, right?! So thanks, Rich ... I am the comic book nerd I am today because of you!

Anyways, so I started this about 2 weeks ago. Originally it was just gonna be a pinup/closeup of Dazzler. On my first pass I didn't even draw her legs or anything. But of course ambition got the best of me and I went a bit overboard. As a joke/nod to my Glee/GLC piece, I was going to have her do the "L", spelling DAZZLER with her mutant Light powers. But since I put her on an actual stage, it seemed more "dazzling" (I'm sorry, but I just HAD to, HA!) to have her blasting the crazy light/energy FX she's known for.

The idea for the cellphone butt shot happened out of the blue last night. I was hitting the final stretch drawing the shadowed hands and thought it'd be funny to have someone with their phone up capturing a memorable moment to treasure forever.

PS. Yes, she has strawberry blonde hair. Please don't kill me.

UPDATE: I'll post up my process of this piece when I can compile them all. Link will be here soon.

As per the traditions of my people (my people = procrastinating nerdy illustrators), I'm posting a Christmas blog barely in time for the holiday.

Today's drawing is an homage to the holiday season, the Aurora Borealis, and to Shotaro Ishinomori, the father of the Japanese Superhero. Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the cyborg snowman, SNOWBORG 12-25!

This was supposed to be quick and simple, but I got really into making it SHINY in the coloring stage. Since I haven't been doing much digital coloring recently, I think maybe this was exactly the right thing to get me to brush the dust off the old tablet.
