The brief was to paint a white shiny hero mobile suit in battle. First thing came to mind was the opportunity to channel some good ol' Yoshiuki Takani Powerdolls illustrations which I find mindblowing to no end...

The patch on his shoulder reads, "For All Mankind" cause you know, who else would he be fighting for, right? <_<

Imagine shopping in the sky for wild flowers. One of the pieces from my Shopping Carts series.

This was my idea:

Concept art for a simulation game where the players choose one cart from 10 unique shopping carts. Players from around the world will have the chance to shop virtually for whatever they want, in a completely whole new experience and in a variety of ways.

Will update more pieces from this series.

This was really cool to work on, not only to do a shirt for one of my favorite bands, but I felt like this was an image Ive had in my head for a really long time and it was almost a relief to get it out on paper. So without hearing the song or knowing what its really about, I drew a picture of Merlin, finally parting the Veil of Isis in death. So thats a little story for those of you interested in my thoughts behind the piece!

This will be the retro in the future; contemporany headphones like skullcandy, and maybe some kind of radiocassettes, that ones full of skateboarding stickers that we use to had in our rooms when we were teenagers. Also discmans and minidiscs. I loved my minidisc! Till Ipod destroyed it!!

About the colors; I just felt to do something more like fast. I love cell shading styles, and I wanted to try a full picture in this kind of coloring. I think I'll be doing more of this kind.

There are some people that are dangerous to know, but once you're in their range you'd better stick close by!

If you're a military history buff and see some problems with the details on the guns, or maybe the USSR paratrooper jacket patches, it's a bit too late to change anything now
I did a LOT of internet research, looked at gun porn videos on youtube (some are pretty funny [link] ) , and got my hands on some airsoft gun replicas to get the details right! Doing contemporary technology research is harder than just making future or fantasy designs up...

Here are some insights I used in this picture from others:
- keep everything moving, you can use wind effects on everything for drama!
- you can use almost any color for the skintones, but saturate the midtones
- "man, her abs look weird. Maybe you should fix the lineart lol"
- adding small highlights on the face is a makeup technique that works in digipaintings, too

I can't even tell you how long ive been looking foward to posting something from the batches of Magic the Gathering Cards I started doing last year at around this time!
I don't even know when the last time I posted something was and it's been keeeelin me.

You're looking at 10 years of dreams, hard work and heartache. Freelancing for Wizards of the Coast is something that I always thought would be just a pipe dream; just a fantasy.
Being able to post this is quite literally a dream come true, I used to look at magic cards and think i'd never make it; never be good enough; never have what it took to compete.

Im just getting started.

Clarification: This didnt take me 10 years to make, hee hee. It took me 10 years to get my skills to a place where I was happy enough with them so I could hopefully Illustrate for Wizards of the Coast.

Also as of this writing - 2/19/2011 - this is just a teaser wallpaper on the Mirrodin site, it isnt currently a card.
Im afraid I cant offer any further information about the identity of this personality/creature/effect/item other than what is posted here.

Here are the hard specs since im getting lots of folks asking about them in notes and in comments - thank you by the way for asking:

Software used: Photoshop 7 only.

Reference, influence, design: I didnt design this creature, I was asked to re-imagine it from a very rough sketch in the style guide that was provided by the design team at Magic.

Completion time: Roughly 2 weeks from sketch to finish.

GEN13's Freefall in flight

From way back in the halcyon day (circa '97 or so) when Wildstorm used to put out trading cards, here's my line art from a card illo of Gen13's gravity-manipulating Roxy Spaulding, aka Freefall. The image prolly works a tad better in color, so that you can see the clouds in the blue-sky backdrop behind her and thus tell more clearly that she's flying upside-down... but alas, I don't have a high-res copy of the color version available to me. Oh, well.

Anyhoo, this is definitely one of my favorite (early) drawings of Roxy, who in turn is prolly my favorite character from Gen13. IIRC, the illo dates back to just after I'd written and drawn the GRUNGE! The Movie arc in Gen13 Bootleg,* and shortly before I wound up pitching the Gen13: Magical Drama Queen Roxy miniseries to Wildstorm. (Next up: The illos I drew as supplemental material for that very proposal.)
