The light at the end of the world

"The crawling mist overwhelmed this valley during our visit, making it
even more “magic”. This is, I guess, the moment I personally liked the
most during our stay.

It may be some more surrealistic image in its slightly experimental
processing, but it is linked in some way to the visions that haunt my
spirit. The ochre transitions through the softness of the mist… And
the oppressive side of the mountains that were surrounding us… The
sun remained quite nebulous behind a thin cloud veil (which I normally
hate), but the mist changed everything. A thousand ideas came into my
mind when it arrived; we were all running a bit everywhere, I also got
bogged down once more in a bunch of bushes that were too big, I
couldn’t get out and yet I had to hurry.

Then there was that man, more or less out of nowhere, with only his
stick and jean shirt… A thin silhouette fitting pretty well to the
mood, I would have liked to use him more but I didn’t dare disturbing
him… Besides the mist was leaving quickly, it was… really a particular
moment, and rare… out of time.

Celestial Patterns

Stars begin to appear despite the storm front that soon enveloped the coastline after this shot was taken.

2x exposures manually blended in Photoshop CS6. Stars were captured half hour after the base exposure for the foreground and clouds.

Marianne and travelled to the limestone coast in the state's southeast. The characterisitic feature of the landscapes down there are the weird and wonderful rock formations. This obelisk sits atop a crumbling cliff overlooking the western horizon. On this particular morning, the sunrise was blazing but the light opposite was even more surreal with the cloud formations forming what seemed to be an arch over the skies.

The Smoking Mountain

Evening light on the Grand Roc Noir and Vallonnet Summit in Vanoise National Park. The autumn sun declines gradually on the horizon, coloring with gold the snow covered peaks. The night and the cold fall come around us with a quiet and soothing silence. The wind has stopped, making a perfect reflection on the surface of a lake without any waves.

FAIRYTALE SEA - Lofoten 2013

We had some really nice weather conditions as we reached Unstadvika. After an extensive outdoor-breakfast we packed our gear and went for a shooting. The clouds had a great color-tint. With the smooth rocks in the foreground, I quickly found a suitable contrast to the bizarre mountains in the background.

POLAR BEACH - Lofoten 2013

Early in the morning, after getting up I decided to went down to the beautiful beach at Utakleiv. The sky was very grey and cloudy and I didn´t expected any special light. While the sun was rising a touch of purple inked the clouds and gave me the perfect conditions for some wonderful dramatic sub-arctic light. I really enjoyed the precise composing with the stones and tried to arrange them in a harmonic way.

I really love the clouds in this one and was lucky enough to spot them as they passed by.
With a little longer exposure (about 1 second) I was able to catch even both - the watermovement in the front and the breaking wave in the background.
One of my favourite photos I did, at least from the design perspective.

Summoning, Land of the Dead dans la tête.
La nuit s'approche à grandes enjambées, elle se cache, tout près, dans les nuages. Insidieusement, elle avale tout, assombrit chaque recoin, dévore les montagnes.
La tente est installée, là bas, à l'autre bout du lac. Le temps est serein et humide. On ne devine pas encore les rafales et la pluie qui vont arriver, bien vite. Tout est silence. Pas un silence oppressant, un silence naturel, agréable. Juste le torrent au loin, le roulement des pierres sous les chaussures, nos respirations essoufflées.
Et un cri de joie devant l'immensité inviolée des lieux.

Red Rock Autumn

Fall colors line the west fork of oak creek canyon. I am always reminded of the narrows and subway in Zion National Park when I hike this trail. Having to wade in the chilly waters made it seem worthwhile as many choose to stop far before this long pool.

The peninsula Snaefellsness is known for its magical beings. The contrasting soft boulders and sharp Rocks seduced me to give this photo this title.
It was a dangerous climb down the steep cliffs with my heavy gear to get to this wonderful hidden coast. Crowded just by birds.
I´ve waited till the sun already set and used the blue hour to get a magical lightmood.

Along a Forgotten Way

Shot recently in the local woods under a soft rain. The various autumn colors combined with fog created a very enchanting atmosphere, I enjoyed staying around this old beech tree and his wonderful colors. The forgotten pathway fading in the fog added a nice touch of mystery to the scene.

Golden October

Through my own project "Tribute to My Home" I travel so much through our rural area,
especially the southern part of the Naturepark Augsburg Western Forests and the Lech / Wertachtal
in Greater Schwabmünchen.
Yesterday I re-visited my favorite place in autumn. The painted autumn forest around the fish pond
at Eggerhof shines in the last available sunlight and let memories of the giant coloring of
North Americas "Indian Summer" come up.
And somehow it makes me a little bit proud, not far from my home, having
found a small Swabian "Indian Summer" ...

This small river called " Le Couzon " goes through a beautiful natural forest. It's rather a special place because you can find there impressive natural rock formations like these on the left. They really look like the ruins of a forgotten temple and the ambient fog on this day increased that mystic atmosphere.

Rivers of Clouds at Moonlight

A sea of clouds, exposed to the south-east, is lit by the moon (63%) rising in the east.
Yes, a huge mass of clouds slipping down steep rocky ridges from a height of about 2.900 meters.

Shot taken at night on September 6th 2012, from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m), Italy.

This is one of the most otherworldly photograph I've taken so far. Thanks to the intrinsic magic of the night and to the privilege of being there, silently admiring this amazing moment.

This 195 seconds exposure, at 115mm on full frame, turned the slow passage of the clouds in a sort of "silky waterfall".
A few star trails are already visible, despite the exposure wasn't particularly long. I guess we all know as the consequences of Earth's rotation are more obvious when using a telephoto lens.
Intensity of colors, contrast and white balance are strongly faithful to the scene.

Main mountains here visible are the Uia Ciamarella (3.676), P.ta d'Arnas (3.560) and, at the horizon, the south-west face of Gran Paradiso (4.061), companion of many adventures

Glacier Crystal

After a brilliant sunset over the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón, i hurried to get to the wonderful black lava beach just a few hundred meters away.
The light was already very gloomy and the big challenge was to get a sharp shot of this glacier fragments in the moving water with the need of a longer exposure. Also it was a very sporty challenge not to get icy-wet feets in the unpredictable breaking waves.
I made a strenuous series of five photos in which I had to concentrate to the utmost of what I was doing. To get a straight horizon and a beautiful composition was harder to manage as it might sounds .

Fire Rocks - ICELAND

Here I had a bit of a climb over large rocks to get to the sea level. The long exposure made the restless sea water into a hazy fog landscape and acts much more peaceful than it was in real.
Some times the waves splashed up to the camera, which was mounted on the very slippery rocks on the tripod.
As the sun was about to disappear over the horizon, she sent a few warm rays through the holes in the clouds and illuminated the three rocks in red light.

This should probably get a full write-up. About how I turned around while driving to catch the light El Cap briefly before disappearing. How we stood there for 30 minutes not knowing if the light would appear again. How, if on command, this storm deposited a rainbow directly in front of where my composition was.

But sometimes you just have to let the picture speak for itself.

Vitaleta Re-edit

Still going back over old images and reprocessing them in Capture NX2. I always felt this shot was a little lacking in contrast in the foreground, and didn't really "pop", so I've tried to remedy that. Also re-edited "Sanctuary", "Piano Grande" and "In The Shadow of Mountains"

The Photo

Another iconic scene in Tuscany, Capella di Vitaleta is usually a sunset location with the days last light illuminating the front of the building. I took this on my first morning there, the same morning that I shot "Two" which is a little to the right of this scene, a wonderful dawn when the weather conspired to fill Val d’Orcia with low lying mist.
The farmhouse of Belvedere is a much more common dawn location, but I wanted to see if I could get something different, and so found a place to shoot in a different part of the valley on my first morning there.
I was faced with a constantly changing sea of mist between the hills, and although I hadn’t originally intended to shoot the chapel, as I didn’t think it would work as a backlit shot, it was too good an opportunity to miss as the first light of dawn coloured the sky above it.

I metered from the green of the field and used a 3 stop nd grad filter to control the highlights of the sky.

I need some helps about this picture ..

Color version , with the 'Lee big stopper' filter ( ND1000 ) is a bit odd .. too cold , too bright blues .. I think .. Now I've darkened the scene and removed saturation .
I prefer this version ..

This shows the devil's peaks " aiguilles du diable " just beside the "mont blanc" in Chamonix .. taken at evening with a big ND filter to reach 30 seconds on the scene ... creation the movement on the fast-moving clouds ... embracing the mountains.

Magical Garden

A special place, my happy place. A very special place for which no words are quite adequate. New England National Park is simply incredible, and very prehistoric. The whole forest is full of magic, and through this image I feel that I have captured the true essence of this epic national park. It takes quite a while exploring the tracks, but to see this kind of magic you have to get off the beaten track and rough it into the heart of the forest.

The golden autumn leaf, the drops in the morning dew reflecting autumn colors. the leaf is on a rock wich has been slightly darkened after .. All is natural ,thanks for your comments

The Ice Cavern

Halfway through a 70 mile ski traverse of the Canadian Rockies in winter, we stumbled upon this huge cavern under the Mons Icefield.

The clearing snow in the air softened the contrasts in the background and allowed me to make this beautifully surreal and painterly rendition of eastern Glacier Park.

Frozen ridge

This is an image taken during my last photography workshop in Iceland, june 2012. Here is a block of ice from the Vatnajökull icefield, deposed on the black sand beach of Jökulsarlon by the North Atlantic Ocean.
It was about 1am, during the infinite night glow of summer.
