Anyway, because I'm a big JC Leyendecker fan and the game takes place during his legendary Saturday Evening Post cover stint, I decided it would be cool to do a parody issue on the city of Columbia with the two main characters as the center. But after drawing my layout, I discovered that the smart folks at Irrational Games had ALREADY done this concept with a few Post parody Game Informer covers. But to me they didn't look particularly like Leyendecker's art, who had such a distinctive style, so I said screw it and just moved forward with my original design. Now, my version doesn't necessarily look like Leyendecker's stuff either (i.e. no where near as good), but I did try make it recognizable as such in the very least while still throwing in my personal stylistic touches.

Ok, I lied.

THIS is the toughest piece i've ever had to work on.

I've really been looking forward to showing this baby to you guys and it was finally released this weekend at SDCC - as a poster - over at the Magic the Gathering booth.

I'll unload the epic tale behind the 6 straight months I worked on this piece with about 4-5 hours of sleep a night on top of doing daddy day care - but it's going to have to wait for the coffee-table art-book I'll release in the misty future one day.

This is only at 50% of the full image size - i.e. lifesize, since this is essentially the second "half" of the "Duels of the Planeswalkers" piece I completed earlier in the year.

I mention those few details for those of you who think you can't accomplish your goals in art in the face of enormous adversity.

You can: you just have to be willing to suffer for it.
Make excuses to draw, you'll be glad you did.

Im trying to widdle away at the comments as best I can but I've got a HUGE workload this month and the wife is about to squeeze out our son (Max) literally within a couple of weeks.
I read every comment and they really, really mean a lot to me and my family - so thanks so much for your interest and entertaining banter; we love it!

Theres also a lot of folks asking about Venser and Nicol Bolas.
As far as I know Venser is dead (died helping free Karn I believe), as for Nicol?
Probably somewhere rubbing his scaley hands together, plotting the demise of those you see here.

LOTS of incredible art on some of these cards, its just so exciting to be apart of it!

This was without question THE toughest piece ive illustrated yet.
For starters this is at about 40-50% of the original image size, i.e. lifesize. If you brought it up to 100% your head would be the same size in relation to the characters.

Also I couldn't use any cinematic trickery for this; no dutch-tilt on the camera or super dynamic angled poses - just a straight ahead, full-body character piece.

I totally underestimated how hard stuff like this truely is and I can honestly say I learned more about my weaknesses working on just this piece alone than I have in the past 3 years.

Ok, thats enough navel gazing.

I know I say this everytime but Im honestly humbled by the interest you all show for my art and the warm notes you send me.
The demands on my time now are more than I ever dreamed and its tough for me to get to all the comments like I used to, but I WILL get to them - just give me a few months grace period heh!

Ok, now to throw a bone to all you lovable, crazy tech-heads:

Here you can see the kitchen in my father's flat + a little selfportrait. I was fascinated by the reflection.
I was afraid I could'nt finish this because of my hand and the lack of time and my father said "Dont worry, you can take the ball to your place and finish it then" Haha. thats cute, isnt it. Luckily its done in time :3

Am trying to get more daily practice in, and yes, I'm still in my pseudo-fantasy phase atm, still exploring while it lasts. I'm sure I'll come to my senses soon enough. This one started out as a speedie and I called it quits 3 hours in.

As a sidenote I really want to try out this software ArtRage that some of the guys here have been using- it looks very fun and intuitive, especially with the dynamic colour blending/analogue painting simulation- a "Painter Lite", so it seems. Will post my feeble attempts when I get round to it! ]]>

Interesting process for this one: I modelled this head from plasticine and took photos. Then I heavily cleaned it up in PS and painted details.

Interesting process for this one: I modelled this head from plasticine and took photos. Then I heavily cleaned it up in PS and painted details.

It measures about 2 inches from top to bottom of the head.

Im busy as hell these days helping out on Enemy Territory : Quake Wars so a lot of the stuff im doing doesnt get seen, however this poster i created for E3 is fine for posting... there are are 3 versions of this image, the portait, the wide landscape and this Square version that was used on the Nvidia stand as a 12 by 12 meter poster!

I had just three days to complete it, and although im not entirely happy with the end results i am happy with the fact that i didnt die in the process
