To me this photograph represents Europe. I was with my fellow deviantArtists for a devMeet at Montmartre in Paris and there were so many people at the end of the day, just sat together on the stairs below the Sacré-Coeur.

Lots of people from so many countries. I have heard a lot of languages. And maybe they didn't all understand each others but they were just there. Together. Watching a sunset on a great day while listening to music, talking and sharing. So if it's that, Europe, I want to be in!

Anyway... this is my entry for the "What does Europe mean to You?" contest at [link]

I wanted to do a poster for a while now. The EU flag is the background. In the centre are the peace symbol doves and what European countries I could squeeze in.

As I live in Ireland, and this year the Lisbon Referendum came again, I put my personal opinion in. I was glad for the Yes Vote this time around.

But more importantly is what Europe means to me, a safe and secure place where new opportunities arise for all individuals. I'm glad the way the poster came out.

this picture was taken during my last stay in Sarajevo. there's no landscape or monument, 'cos that's not what Europe is to me. Europe means people, the inhabitants of every inch of our continent.

what's more, Europe means to me both good and bad things. Sarajevo was the most multicultural city in Europe. and that situation lasted from before the World War I, through the second one and the years of Tito's communism as well. all those years in Sarajevo there lived a great number of autors, journalists, actors, musicians and other people significant for what Europe was.

and then there came the Yugoslavian war. the kind of war that shouldn't happen anymore. the war between brothers. the war that destroyed Sarajevo in both ways. buildings were ruined and the multicultural relations were broken.

today you can still see the walls full of small holes. they're the bullets' holes. nobody in Sarajevo wants to talk about the war, which is understandable, considering the fact how little the rest of Europe did to stop the war.

but people in Sarajevo still can smile and laugh. they still have friends among Croats as well as among Muslims. after all the injustice and pain they live their normal lives.

and this is what this picture stands for. the Europe which can recover. the Europe which was scarred by unnecessary wars. the Europe which can exist, because people of Europe smile. ]]>

What makes me feel European?
I am going to be honest. What took the most time was actually coming up with what makes me feel European (many, many days... I didn't think I would be able to enter). Since it's something in my blood I had a hard time figuring out a time when I DIDN'T feel European. But after some time I discovered that the time when I felt the most European is when I spend it looking over the family tree. It's not really the fact that I was born in Europe that made me feel European. It's the fact that my family has been here for generations. Hearing about all the nationalities that was woven into the family tree makes me feel that there isn't much difference between them. And hearing about the soldiers that fought for their loved once, for their countries makes me proud, proud to live here (I agree that war is bad, but until the day when it is unnecessary to fight I will admire the people who are willing to lay down their lives for others in combat).
Even though these pictures aren't of my relatives they represent the bond that ties us all together. Because of the way that Europe is connected it is so easy to make bonds. Isn't that what makes Europe so distinct? The fact that we feel a connection between our countries, we feel that we are, in fact, family in a way.
(I am not saying that countries outside Europe doesn't share a bond with us, I love traveling to those countries and always will. But they carry a different appeal. It's a new world to explore, and it is like a treasure to find. I love that. Europe however carries more familiarity. Please don't be offended by that, I don't mean to offend anyone.)
My long lost relatives are what made me European, and that is what will make my children that too, even if they would live on the other side of the world, because it's their legacy.
I know I am really getting in deep with this one, and it's because I can't take the question lithely. So, what does Europe mean to me? It is home, it is a lifestyle and it is a legacy. ]]> What does Europe mean to you? contest.

This is my Europe because I am European, just born in Australia, but i was married into an Italian family, so every Wednesday night we have dinner at my Nonnas (Nana/Grandma in Italian), we have cutlets, arincini(rice balls) and pasta and usually soup, and its "My Europe" because its how we have taken the culture form there and used it here, and its typical Italian dinner with the whole family and The Nonno at the head of the table Nonno is Grandad in Italian]n, so yeah this is my entry let’s hope I win! ]]> [link]

So i went thinking.. who am I?"
I'm Niki Vandermosten.. and i like... to eat.. i love cooking.. i love foodz (as you can see for my belly :D) i love to experiment with all kind of food.. with flavours and colors in the kitchen.

So i thought to myself.. why not do the same in an artwork of Europe with all the traditional dishes of each country.. Also everyone has to eat to stay alive, and most of us even eat 3 meals a day.
Also i think food brings people closer. If you go out to dinner with friends.. or have a party at home.. or just meet friends.. it always includes food in some form or drinks.
Also when you have dinner (at least here) you talk to the person who's at your table about whatsoever.. "How was your day?" ; "what did you do today?" ; "what are you going to do?" ; "got plans?" ...
They also say love goes through a man's stumach :love:

So the "food" concept in this picture is a lot more than just food.
let's get started!

First of all i build Europe in Illustrator. EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY!! around 50 i believe. (52 i think)
Than i went searching what a traditional dish was of each country... was a hell lot of work!... now that i knew what there "traditional" dish was it was time to find some photographs of it.

Now that i got the photographs and europe ... it's time to fill each country with the dish... when all this was done i uploaded in photoshop and did the background.

and this is what you get.

I think i spended like.. 20hours on this? maybe 40 if you include all the research i had to do. (don't really know, cause i was on dAmn and Msn a lot when i made this) :blush:
