This is one of the most adorable drawings I've ever made. I made it with ink and quill with some light brushing of wash to give it dimension. Not sure why I chose a guinea pig, but I love him with all my heart and he will always be one of my favorites.

Piggy Contrast II

This is my second piece for the "Piggy Contrast" cardboard paintings series. I decided to make just one guinea pig in this piece, but to have the contrast still show up in his fur. You'll notice that the background is blue on one half and red on the other, and that his fur reflects the opposite of whatever side it's touching.

I like the randomness of the black shapes; they are not symmetrical and the lines are not straight, but I did that on purpose. I didn't want the painting to appear too technical, and I feel the lack of straight lines adds a childish whimsy to the composition. I can say I'm pretty satisfied with this one.

Acrylic and charcoal on cardboard, poster-size. Original for sale for $900.

SO HOW WAS IT DONE!? Ok, there's way too many ppl now asking that from me... .___.' It really isn't anything *amazing*, so here it goes:

Software used: Adobe ImageReady CS (I used Jasc Animation Shop 3 to set the frame-delay correct)

How: First I drew all the parts pixel by pixel, then did animation to look it the way it looks now. Sounds dumb...

Time used: 6-8 hours

[Photo] Red squirrels are in decline on the UK mainland, but not on islands

Attempts to save the red squirrel on the UK mainland are a waste of money, a scientist has said.
Funding should focus on protecting populations found on islands such as the Isle of Wight, said Stephen Harris from the University of Bristol.

He said past experience showed efforts to eradicate grey squirrels, which compete with the reds for food and habitat, had little impact.

Professor Harris made his comments in an article for BBC Wildlife magazine.

"Conserving rare or vulnerable species on islands is not a new concept," the founder of the Mammal Research Unit wrote.

"[The UK] is not short of large, accessible islands where it would be simpler and cheaper to conserve red squirrels. It would be more effective in the long term to establish these as red squirrel reserves."

Two tribes

Grey squirrels, introduced to the UK at the turn of the 20th Century, were originally thought to be more aggressive and drove the reds from suitable habitat.

However, more recent research revealed that greys were better at digesting acorns, but ate hazelnuts before moving on to acorns, thus depriving red squirrels of their preferred food.

The biggest problem now is a virus that is spread by grey squirrels but kills red ones, accelerating the native species decline.

In April, the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded the Northumberland Wildlife Trust £600,000 to set up nature reserves to protect dwindling numbers in Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales and Merseyside.

A Conservative member of the Scottish Parliament has also suggested that bounties should be paid for the shooting or trapping of grey squirrels.

MSP Murdo Fraser said such measures would help preserve the numbers of the indigenous animal.

Although the animals were under threat from their larger grey cousin in the UK, Professor Harris said red squirrels were very common in other parts of the world.

"While their decline on mainland Britain has been very sad, as a global conservation issue it hardly registers."

Sophie Stafford, editor of BBC Wildlife magazine, hoped Professor Harris' comments would help focus minds on conservation efforts.

She said: "[His] arguments will undoubtedly encourage heated debate, but it is through this kind of innovative thinking that we can find solutions to some of Britain's most challenging conservation issues."

Although world is changing and people are changing - in their own way - some things remain despite the odds of inevitable destiny. I love photos of lost civilizations, buildings and monuments corrupted by the elements of nature which is reclaiming her rightfull property back to where it belongs. Those wonderful shots of Inca monunents returning to jungle always makes me wonder about the way of the world. And sometimes, glimpses of this can be found right around the corner, we only have to seek for it and open our eyes...

This little girl was so cute! We had her in a big cardboard box with her brother, while we were having a yard sale, trying to get them homes. He was nice and calm, but she just kept jumping out of the little handle holes on the sides of the box! Eventually we had to tape it shut! lol. Neither of them got homes that day, so her owners are thinking of giving them to a shelter that doesn't kill the animals.

Green Heron

This is a Green Heron, they are pretty much solitary birds, usually seen alone and sometimes in pairs. They are very cautious birds and moves quickly when alarmed. That's exactly what this one did. I captured a few other shots but, do to it's coloring, only I could see it. This is the smallest heron in FL, with the exception of the Least Bittern. I like the colors of this bird, but I'm not particularly fond of the setting. Well, there you have it, at least you can see one.

or something like that, said the sea lion. These things made so much noice. You could buy fish to feed them and they were like vultures, especially the big ones. This one was relentless. It didn't matter where we moved to with our fish, he/she followed. This is a huge exhibit at Sea World.

Longs Peak

This was taken from Golden Ponds river park, in Longmont, CO, looking west toward the mountains and the obvious, Longs Peak- covered with snow.
I believe it was late Spring, maybe April or so, due to the heavy snow up on Longs Peak! This is the community I grew up in and where a part of my heart remains, to this day.

I hope to live back in the area, in the not too distant future. ...maybe, once both of the girls are off to college, which is just over 3 years from now. I miss these spectacular views, family and friends. The change of seasons in CO is awesome and always breath taking.

The geese population, is unbelievable around these ponds. Usually, they are everywhere. I like the colors in this shot and the reflection, and the snow capped mountains! ...especially, since I never see snow, where I am.

He has the widest tongue, I've personally ever seen on a dog. ...it's like a scoop/shovel.

I was able to capture 2 shots of this young alligator at the park on Friday. I like them both so, I'm submitting both. One is a bit closer than the other and more central. That's about the only difference that I see. He was probably no more than 3 foot long and quite obviously not afraid to lay close to the boardwalk. His sun bathing was probably more important at the time.

I like the color of the water and I am quite pleased with these shots.

This was taken at of course, my favorite local river park. I'm thinking that this bird is in the Egret family, while not as large as the American Egret, it does resemble the shape/size of the Cattle Egret but, missing the yellow fringe. He just happened to be standing on a sign for the American Egret. Throughout this park are signs posting the different types of birds, snakes and trees. I shot at least a dozen photos of this bird and the closer I got, the more attention he gave me.

I went in search of these flowers they grow wild out here in Texas. Very pretty with a lovely fragrance I believe they are a type of orchid not sure as I haven't been able to find them.

Anyways, while wandering around I found this guy buried in this flower he definately gives a whole new meaning to smelling the flowers
