It's been one of those I had to start over again a couple of times, because I just wasn't happy.

The title also came to me pretty early, so in hindsight it has a poetic undertone I guess, because of what was happening while I was working on this image.

I'm dedicating this piece to NEIL ARMSTRONG who passed away Aug. 25, 2012.

May his example and those of other explorers like him, inspire our generation and future generations to come, to keep up the spirit of curiosity and exploration in the name of scientific discovery. May those endeavors and our dreams inspire us to greater heights.

COMPOSITION: Foreground terrain rendered in Bryce 7.1 Pro (took 1d 2h 45m; I'm not kidding!). Starfield, astronauts, rovers and asteroids rendered in Lightwave with appropriate lighting rig. Remaining elements, fx and composition done in PS.

MESHES: Landbarge/Rover by Kenny Mitchell (textures modified by me) & NASA Astronaut by Jason Webster.

ORIGINAL SIZE: ~1680x2480 in, 263 layers.

UPDATE:

~XelfrepuslaX suggested a couple of changes (thanks for that), so I worked over the following:

Reduced the main planet's atmosphere.
Increased the glow of the main planet's atmosphere.

I also made some personal improvements while I was looking the image over:

Changed the moon slightly, smoothed the shadow and changed the glow slightly.
Added a glow behind the ridges of the foreground asteroid to show reflecting light and bring out a few more details. ]]> I've been working on this piece on and off for two or three weeks now (counting from the moment I had the idea). I was thinking about doing some space art again and ended up with this. A lot of fun, stuff like that makes me really relax. As i saw this image [link] , i just had to do something with it. ok, so here i've tried something new and combined two planets into one, ( i think that the transition between the both of them is pretty ok! ) in this little piece. i call it, The Two Sides of Hell.
yes, the TWO sides of hell!!!

you see, everyone interprets hell as being searing hot and set ablaze by fire! but who ever said, thats the only type of hell there is!!! there's also the cold, frigid to the bone hell, one in which any word referring to heat is completely unknown!!! that, is the second side of hell!!!

so tell me now people of DA, which would you prefer, to burn in an eternal fire ball, OR, to freeze in an eternal snow ball!!!

if you ask me, i prefer the snow ball!

This one's funny. I mean, it started off light and cheery and like "aaaahhhahaaaaooooooaahoooo," you know, ethereal and stuff. And then I added a photo filter and it spiraled down to this.

That I find humorous.

There are a few errant lines I want to get rid of, but I cannot for the life of me find them in my PSD. At least I couldn't seem to find them within the last fifteen minutes; my attention span won't let me keep looking any longer tonight. Neither will my computer for that matter. I need to figure out why it overheats so.

Oh, and, hate to say it but because the thumbnail looks yick, FULL VIEW please.

Main Program Used: Photoshop (lighting effects, stars, rings, textures and putting it all together).

I used my own stock in here (fractals - check my resource folder) and a NASA photo of Greece (planet). I think I used some Hubble images and clouds (each modified so that I don't think you can really tell, but I thought I'd list them for good measure). Oh and some of my Bryce asteroids.
