First of all I offer my deepest gratitude to my husband Keith, and to my wonderful friend Sam ^sphilr. In fact Sam is largely responsible for the existence of this piece. I've toiled over 5 failures, (one of which even had portions that were elaborately painted) and was on the precipice of simply giving up... Thank you both for your patient guidance.

This is one of the very rare occasions where I'm consciously conveying an idea, an emotion... something. Usually I just paint whatever scenery that blooms to mind, which is why I decided to lavish so much time and effort, for the sake of expressing something I find deeply... important.

No, this has nothing to do with suicide.

I am trying to convey the very moment when we realise the point of no return is right at our feet... that first second where we act on a decision that at the time might seem perilous, like having our hands bound and thrown off a cliff with a noose around our neck... and the unstoppable force of exhilaration that seems to bloom from the chest when the first step is taken... something wild and phenomenally beautiful bursts from within us... and in that instant, we are reborn. Perhaps not reborn as a better person... though reborn nonetheless.

A redux of "Wings That Flutter" from January 2009}

It's interesting to think that a little over six months ago I actually was happy with the first version. However the imperfections grew to irk me, and I felt bad for not delving as much as I should to capture the subtle beauty of these wonderful winged creatures. So here she is, redone. I hope I'll be satisfied with this for much, much longer.

The birds are, counter-clockwise:

Black Swan
Mute Swan
Ruby Throated Hummingbird
Feral Pigeon
Western Tanager
Japanese Waxwing

Well technically the last one is a hybrid of my fanciful invention, combining the Cedar Waxwing and the Japanese Waxwing. idno.

This piece adds a little twist where it incorporates a sword swallower in with the design of the sword. I went through many ornate surroundings, but found myself going back to the simple one you see here. The result ended up resembling a corpse impaled on a sword instead of a sword swallower, (sword swallower would have been a lousy name as well).

As with all of my designs, feel free to use them as tattoo designs on your body. All I ask is for the credit as the designer, and a picture of the completed design.

And to the few of you out there in Deviantart world who continued to hound me to get back into it over the past 2 years, my deepest thanks.
