The Photo

Another shot from Capella di Vitaleta in Tuscany. Re-discovered when going over through my hard-drive looking for shots that I'd not been satisfied with when using Aperture as my RAW converter.
I ran this through Nikon Capture NX2 and was immediately happier with it.

Taken shortly before dawn of one of the most photographed chapels in Italy...although this place is usually shot at sunset, not sunrise. The mist was just clearing from around the hill, giving me a clear shot of the chapel beneath the sunrise colours of the sky.

I metered from the green of the field and used a 3 stop nd grad filter to control the highlights of the sky. I know someone's going to tell me I should have cropped some of the sky out, but I shot it and left it that way deliberately

I had this little dream....to meet a fox some day.
Not only spotting him from a far distance, not catching only a glimpse of his tail, but really seeing one.
And secretly I hoped that on that day, I might be able to take some nice photograps, too.
And very very secretly I hoped I would find this fox in a beautiful, natural environment and I guess I must have had some very secret fantasies about finding a fox in the snow.
But, realizing that both foxes and snow are not the most common thing here, I knew this perfect combination would be quite a challenge to find and it might take a while to realize this dream.

This week, a colleague photographer and I and I decided to try our luck and went to a beautiful Dutch dune area.
Although the whole country was covered with snow at that moment, we managed to find one of the few snowless spots.
The nature was gorgeous nonetheless, the weather was perfect and we had a great time, so we didn't really miss the snow.

All of a sudden, totally against all weather forecasts, it started to snow like it would never end.
In two hours the green trees and yellow sheer disapeared under 15 cm white blanket and we found ourselves in a undescribably beautiful world. (and we managed to find our way back through all this whiteness, too )

And then,just when we least expected it...a fox popped out of the bushes and came walking out of the forest right towards us...! It had gotten cloudy at this time and it was still snowing heavily, so although my photos could have been a higher quality, this magical scene is burned in my memory for ever....}

To commemorate my first deviation with 100 favorites (now 341! [link] ), I thought I'd upload another one, taken 7 minutes later.

This one isn't quite as big, but somehow I kind of like it better; I just really like the pattern.

The title is incredibly cheesy in my opinion, but it's also kind of like the Muse album, which is really good.

Taken with my old Vivitar MF 100mm f2.8 1:1 macro, with a +5 diopter lens (approximately +5 - my brother sort of made it). All the rest of the technical info is in the EXIF data.

The background is a mohair scarf. Lighting is natural (cloudy day), and I of course used a tripod. I did some minor editing; a bit of levels, and increased the exposure a bit (no cropping).

To get good snow flake pictures, it has to be right around -5ºC - too cold, and they'll look nice, but they'll be tiny, too warm and they'll be nice and big, but they'll just be puff balls, and they may even melt very quickly. Given how little is in focus, even at f9.5, anything other than a flat flake doesn't really work.

I've also concluded that tight weave, and even glass doesn't work as a good background. Because when you're that close up, you just see all the imperfections, and it doesn't look nice. I think the ideal is hairy things, which are meant to be chaotic and "imperfect", and the flakes rest on the hairs nicely as well.

When I first saw a photograph of the karst peaks of Guilin, China thirty years ago, I couldn't believe a landscape like this really existed. The area remained at the top of my 'life list' of places to see since then. When I finally found the opportunity to visit, I wandered alone on the riverbanks and met a cormorant fisherman who showed me his traditional methods. They fish at night and the lantern attracts fish toward the raft so the cormorant can dive in and catch them. The fishermen tie a loose string around the cormorant's neck so they can't swallow it completely, and the men pull out the fish and store them in a basket. This method of fishing has existed for over a thousand years here. I decided to call the image 'Timeless' in honor of the men and their tradition. It is still possible to find the 'old China' if you know where to look.

This particular shot was taken inside the foyer of Bradford's National Media Museum during a college trip down there in December 2008. There was an installation hanging from the ceiling that caught my eye and this is the resulting depiction of my initial impressions.

Title inspiration this time comes from the name of one of the two schools of thought within the Pythagorean sect, where they were known as the learners. The other school called themselves the Akousmatikoi, the listeners. Pythagoras, of course, was the ancient Greek philosopher partly responsible for the formation of the theorem that bears his name.

Location

This is a part of northern Alentejo I always feel I've had a special relationship with. Some of the very first waterscapes I ever took and the first I submitted to this site were taken in a village called Comporta, and one of my most popular shots on DA was taken here around 6 months ago [link]

I'd heard about this place called Carrasqueira nearby, heard that it had an amazing labyrinth of old wooden piers called Cais Palafitico where fishermen from the estuary worked from.
I'd never managed to see it though, but this weekend we had some incredibly beautiful technicolour skies around sunset, so I decided to take the chance and do the 120km drive there on Monday evening.

It was throwing it down with rain when I arrived, and continued to do so for around 45 minutes. I could see this fascinating confusion of piers, many collapsed, and there was high tide so I'd be able to photograph water, rather than the mud-flats they stand on at low tide.
A small gap opened up in the clouds around 15 minutes before sunset, so I set off with my camera onto the piers.

In a place like this with so much photographic potential, I have a tendency to want to shoot everything and end up missing the best part when the light is at it's most beautiful.
I decided to head out to the end of the piers where I'd have a view with less visual confusion and just focus on composing some shots there.

It's an amazing place, and one I'm sure I'll be going back to. I was incredibly lucky with the tide, as well as the light and the sky, which was truly breath-taking.
The downside though is that the place is full of tiny mosquitos. I got eaten alive, but at the time didn't really notice it as I was so involved with what I was doing. My hands are covered in about 20 small bites though, so next time I'll take repellent.

It's important to note that I haven't done anything to this shot other than sharpening and putting the title and frame. I didn't touch curves, contrast, levels or saturation. I used no coloured filters, these are the colours that I saw with my eyes that night and the image that came straight out of the camera.

Technique

There's something really evocative about piers, they seem to work so well photographically. I was looking for one without a boat, as I wanted a cleaner image with fewer elements, but I couldn't find one, and moreover, couldn't resist this secondary pier that had collapsed into the water.

When it comes to composition, in a place like this there are limits as you can't move to the side, only decide how high to have the camera and how far along the pier you're going to walk.
In a shot like this I'd normally try to keep the end of the pier below the level of the horizon, but here that just wasn't possible, and besides, I like lower compostions as it makes the texture in the foreground clearer as well as keeping the tripod more steady. There was no wind, but every move I made rocked the pier, so I chose a lower composition.

I checked the edges to make sure there was nothing touching the edge of the frame and composed for the sky. I wanted the clouds to be prominant, but also plenty of water and pier, so I put the horizon across the middle (I know you shouldn't, but I really couldn't care less).

In a shot of a pier I think long exposures work as they smooth out the water, elimiting the visual noise of ripples and allowing the textures of the wood to become more apparent.
The sun hadn't quite set (there was some smoke from the farmers burning fields on the horizon, which has distorted the sun a little) so I used a very dark neutral density filter (a Hoya ND400) which closes out around 9 stops of light. Before putting this on though, I checked composition and lined up the 2 neutral density filters I was putting across the sky to balance it with the exposure I needed for the foreground and the water.
It's important that the graduation lines of the ND grad filter are lined up along the horizon, and when the ND400 is on, you can't see anything through the viewfinder.
I placed the grads first, then removed the entire grad filter holder with the grads in it, screwed in the ND400, then put the grads back in place.

I'd measured the exposure from the foreground earlier, so I just added 9 stops of exposure to the settings the meter had read. The ND400 almost always underexposes, so I added another 30 seconds on just to make sure, giving me an exposure time of 90 seconds at f8 (the aperture setting which gives my lens the sharpest results).

I sat down behind the tripod and opened the shutter with the cable release. I couldn't move at all as any shift of weight would have moved the tripod and the image would have been unsharp.

I was also unsure how the movement of the boat would look on the finished image, but in the end I was quite happy with it.

Post Processing

I shot the image RAW and the only thing I've done to the image is crop a little off the edges where part of the filter holder was visible. Other than that, I added the title and frame in PS, re-sized it, gave it some very subtle sharpening and that's it. As I said, there has been no adjustment to colour, contrast or saturation.

This was originally a class Photoshop assignment back in my community college days. We were to make three compositions with a "Global Warming" theme. The original had text smack-dab in the middle that didn't make much sense but was required for the assignment. I took it out, which did wonders for the message in the poster.

Taken at Sintra - Portugal.

I was driving down the hill in these awesome roads.. In the past they used to practice Rally championships on them.
When I go out to shoot, I tend to look at everything that surrounds me and I spoted a great place to shoot this curve. I was carrying my wide lens, and decided to shoot this at 10mm giving this great look.

It was raining a lot, so my girlfriend had to hold the umbrella over our heads while I was shooting this one.

Its a crazy shot of a beautiful place, and every Portuguese deviant surely agrees with me, Sintra is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal.

Post-processing:

PSCS2 levels, desaturate the image, used "replace color" to maintain the red lights of the passing car, burn tool on the 4 corners and unsharpmask at 25%.

Some areas of the road, you can easily see a lost of detail, this is due to water drops on my lens... it was raining and even with the umbrella some drops reached the Uv filter.
