Named after "I Drop Gems" by _ensnare_. There really are no words apt enough to describe how awesome this song is. Seriously, if this is your bag, check it out. You may very well fall in love. Don't judge right away, though. Let it's awesomeness build up and surround you first.

Besides being named after one of my favorite pieces of music, this work of mine is quite clearly inspired by eatenwaffle, who I wish had more videos. (You can find eatenwaffle under a different name here on dA.) Granted, I only tend to watch about 2 minutes or so of his videos. I don't want to mimic them exactly. I just like to use them to give me a boost, another way to learn some new techniques and get myself out of the box and hopefully give me some ideas. I'm a bit wary of uploading a piece that's so similar to another artist's work, especially an artist as amazingly talented as that one, but I can't help myself. My "I Drop Gems" is just a learning piece, but I still like the way it came out. wow, i seem to be popping thee out by the day now! and with each one, the realism increases! another one of my favourite moons in the solar system, enceladus! also, i included the moons mimas to the right of enceladus and titan to the right of saturn. i also if you look closely at enceladus' south polar region, you can see the cryogeysers too. and again, i enjoyed making this one and love how it came out because it looks just so natural! so please allow your eyes feast upon the image and all of its glory! thats just another way of saying enjoy the image!

enceladus is the sixth largest major moon of saturn and also the brightest body in the solar system, reflecting nearly 99% of the light that falls on its surface. the moon has a region near its southern pole called the 'tiger stripes'. here, huge cryogeysers spew large quantities of frozen salt water from the moons sub surface ocean, said to harbor at least microbial life. this frozen water constantly replenishes saturn's  E ring and retains it. this sub surface ocean arrises due to tidal heating of the moon's interior through gravitational interactions with the other moons and saturn.
there has been talk to send a probe to the moon in the future to investigate the sub surface ocean for life. because of this ocean, the moon is said to be similar to jupiter's moon europa, which also has a sub surface ocean under its ice sheets and probably life in it as well. the moon is currently the most habitabitable body in our solar system after earth. the moon is also in a 2:1 orbital resonance with outer moon dione and completes two orbits around the planet for every one that dione completes.

And so it should, to bring in the New year each year I've been on this site I have always let loose and done a colourful space scene as my own little way of commemorating it The scene itself didn't need to be anything too original, I kinda wanted a more "typical" looking situation, but with the twist being in the colours. I wanted to go for something really fluro-looking and sort of Summery too (that was part of my inspiration after all ) When I allow myself to use such intense colours there became so many possibilities because realism went out the door either way. But my original scheme seemed best, so I stuck with that Still not sure about this one so it *might* be prone to later editing.

This is actually developed from a speedpaint I did some time ago ([link]) - seemed like a decent jumping off point. I enjoyed how violent the nebula was looking in that speedwork and wanted to further push the notion of conflicting, volatile gases colliding in space. Turned out tamer than I had it midway through the process, but I think I'll revisit the concept somewhere down the line - see how stormy we can make these nebulae.

I played around with some of the lovely brushes by which I highly recommend - at the very least they show what can be achieved when time is invested in constructing a good set of brushes (something I will now attempt to do myself). I was also lazy and made use of one of 's fantastic starfield resources. ]]>

Galactic Visions Space Art

The Cosmos is so immense that one could just as well consider it as infinite. The known "universe" is assuredly only a minute speck relative to the true size and nature of the actual Cosmos. Earth based intellects have examined and explored only a microscopic portion of the Cosmos and now realize that even the closest stellar systems within the home galaxy harbor extrasolar worlds, some which are assuredly Earth-like. “Super-Earths” several times the size of Earth are known to exist. Such colossal terrestrial planets would assuredly be magnificent. Exotic stellar systems with such super-worlds stimulate the mind and fuel the imagination. Imagine the vistas within such a system. Advanced extra-solar civilizations would likely create new worlds by terraforming on a grand scale, perhaps even creating new companion worlds with rings composed of modified asteroids or planetoids.
In this painting I have visualized the aforementioned scenario. The primary planet depicted is a “SuperEarth” within a multiple stellar system which emerged from the womb of an exotic cluster of novae. An artificially engineered ringed planetoid has been created and closely orbits the primary planet. The colossal asteroids in the foreground have been modified to function as natural spaceships and conceal the advanced miniature worlds within. These CelestiaLiths, appearing natural, are actually the artifacts of an extremely advanced civilization. They travel within and beyond the stellar system and can function independently or collectively as in the myriad ones composing the engineered ringed planetoid. Imagine what knowledge such an advanced extrasolar civilization would have to enable them to engineer such fantastical artifacts which masquerade as natural artifacts of the Cosmos . . . ]]> Copyright 2012 Michael C.
