The Riviera represented one of the most sucessful American attempts at capturing European styling and performance in a large automobile. Positioned at the top of Buick's coupe line up, the Riviera always represented cutting edge styling and performance and deserves a place in American automotive history.

Initially introduced in 1963 with Ferrari-esque styling, it was a huge success. The 1971 Riviera featured one of the greatest styling excercises in automotive history. Dubbed "the boat-tail," the look was supposed to draw upon stylish cars of the 1930s, but putting the design on a 218 inch length, 122 inch wheelbase, 4,247 lb car resulted in a look that buyers either loved or hated. Sales dropped to 33,810, though this might have also been caused by a downgrade in the engine department. General Motors had decreed that all its engines had to run on unleaded gasoline to meet stricter emission standards and thus the 455 engine was detuned, down to 315 bhp. The 455 engine in GS models were rated at 330 bhp and included the usual performance equipment to go along with that power. Performance did suffer, with the top speed falling to 120 mph.

Sadly the unique styling didn't last long. In 1973 - likely due to complaints from some who thought the design to outlandish - the Riviera was redesigned with a more convential rear end, but still kept the boat-tail look. 1974 brought another redesign completely eliminating the boattail, and weight was increasing while engine output decreased. 1975 was the last year for third generation of Rivieras.

Responding to the lifting of GM's ban on engines larger than 400 cid in midsize cars, Chevrolet responded by dropping in a new 454 cubic engine into its Chevelle SS. The entry level 454 was known as the LS5 and packed 360bhp. The top engine choice was the LS6 version with 450bhp. The LS6 had a 800-cfm Holley four barrel on an aluminum manifold, 11.25:1 compression, solid lifters, four-bolt mains, forged steel crank and connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, and deep-groove accessory pullies. No production engine ever had a higher factory horsepower rating. The standard Chevelle SS 396 continued with its 402 cid engines, although the 325bhp was dropped and the 350bhp version was now standard. Optional on both the 396 and 454 was a new cowl-induction hood, which had a rear facing flapper near the base of the windshield to feed air into the engine. The styling was new with a "vee" front end, functional hood pins, and five-spoke Rallye wheels. Then, of course, was the famous Regular Production Code, Z/28, that would change the industry's view of pony cars.

After just three years, Chevrolet released their second generation model halfway through the 1970 model year. The new Camaro was released with much fanfare and much success late in the 1970 model year. Most of the credit went to the new styling, which was European-inspired. Still based on the Nova, the new Camaro was two inches longer and had five inch longer doors, and was now available only as a coupe (no convertible). It featured a new A-arm front suspension and better noise insultation. Under the hood, the proposed new 454 blocks never made it and the Camaro SS continued with the 350 and 396 engines. After January 1970, however, the 396 engines no longer displaced 396 cubic inches. Chevrolet actually enlarged them to 402 cubic inches but the executives decided to name it the 396 to take advantage of the name recognition and avoid any attention from insurance carriers. The RS option now included a free standing grill, twin bumperetes, an Endura rubber grill frame, and parking lights between the headlights and the grill. The SS option included a special black grill, hidden wipers, power brakes, engine trim, white-letter tires, chrome dual exhausts, and the SS396 also came with black-painted trunk panels and a special suspension.

The Z28 saw the most radical change -- an all new 350 cid engine know as the LT-1 350. It was rated at 360bhp (it had a rating of 370bhp when installed in Corvettes). This engine proved much more tractable, reliable, and generally outperformed the 302 engine of old. It was also available with an automatic transmission, the first time for the Z28.

This request is part of a deal with *cycloidbeta. A while back he did a Grey Stallion deviation for me, then said he'd do another version a few weeks ago on the grounds that I took up a Cycloid Stallion request, deal. About 10 hours on and off with a huge week long break in the middle before I attacked the chrome work. I hate working with chrome, its now on my "avoid like the plague" list. 41 layers in total, 77 if you include all the path layers I kept in a seperate folder. (Don't ask.) Listening to lots and lots of Steve Vai while doing this.
After messing around with it way too long and not getting the desired look, I decided to scrap the "Nancy" nose art and create my own. I liked the name, but decided to go in a different direction with it and illustrate a nurse. Hooking up with a nurse was every fighter pilots fantasy, so I went with this theme.

My Nose Art illustration is based on a rough hand drawn pencil sketch that I redrew in Illustrator and then pasted into the illustration of the P-47 that I had already started.

Now for a little history... the 50th Fighter Group was part of the 9th Air Force. Before D-Day they were stationed at a temporary air strip built on a country estate in the west of England in Lymington, at Pylewell House. The airfield was situated between Pylewell House, Newtown House and Snook Farm, the main run way actually ran right past the front door of Pylewell House. Officers were even billeted at Pylewell House.
Throughout the Normandy Invasion, the 50th Fighter Group provided fighter cover for the first waves of landing forces on the beachheads, flying over 1000 sorties from Lymington, they attacked everything from bunkers, gun emplacements, supply dumps, trains, railroad sidings, troop concentrations, radar stations and road transport... The 9th Air Force engineers even built a temporary emergency air strip on Utah Beach! As the Allied troops advanced deeper into France after D-Day, fighter groups of the 9th Air Force were moved lock stock and barrel from their bases in England to newly captured bases throughout France. The 50th moved at least 4 times as Allied forces pushed forward. Eventually the 50th was to end up at Toul-Ochey near Nancy, France. From their new base they helped stop the German advance at Saar-Hardt in January of 1945 and took part in the offensive that destroyed the Colmar bridgehead in January and February, as well as providing close ground support for the offensive that broke the Siegfried Line that eventually led to Allied forces entering into Germany in March and April, 1945. The 50th was a tactical fighter group and worked closely with troops on the ground. General George S. Patton called the 9th Air Force his flying artillery. Working directly with Air Force P-47 pilots who were assigned to Army units on the ground, they operated as foreward air controlers and were able to direct pin-point tactical air strikes to 9th Air Force P-47 pilots in the sky. 9th Air Force fighters would also freelance as they flew to and from missions, they would strafe and bomb targets of opportunity along the way. Nothing was safe from their attacks. The P-47 Thunderbolt was well suited for this sort of activity. It could carry tons of bombs, rockets and with eight 50 cal. Browning machine guns, four in each wing, it could really really pack a punch. The P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the largest and most successful fighter aircraft of WWII. Big, fast and powerful, the pilots and ground crews affectionately called them "Jugs".

Adobe Illustrator 8.0, Apple G3 iMac, OS 9.2.
