Manage Deviants Concept

Here are a few ideas for improving the deviantWATCH page. Thanks to everyone for their ideas and support.

_{As before, deviants are listed alphabetically, grouped by deviant group. Hover over a username to see their avatar and quick information. Instead of 'remove' tick boxes down the left hand side of the table, we have a general 'select' tick box, and all the deviants in a group can be selected at once by ticking next to the group name. Standard selection modifiers appear at the top, along with options for manipulating the selection - to remove the selected deviants or change their group. Simple help on how to select and modify deviants is given via the little icon at the top.

As well as this, when deviants are selected, a dynamic box appears in the top-right, showing the users' avatars, and then lists actions that you can perform. You can quickly send a note to a group of people, or (unknown at the moment) invite to a club using the upcoming Party system.

The Add a Deviant dialog is similar to the other concept I created. You can type the username and see their avatar when the username is found. Then you can choose a group to add them to, as well as choose whether they are a friend and what items of theirs you want to watch. This combines what currently takes 3 steps.

Deviant groups can be renamed by clicking Rename. When clicked, the group name turns into a text box and the Rename button becomes an Update button.

Emoticon Legend Design

Here is something that I have thought needs to be remade for a long time. With the release of deviantART Version 5, nothing changed, so here is a compilation of ideas, thoughts and somewhat of a layout that I thought would work nicely. This is of course the Emoticon Legend.

The current one has been around for a long time, and is clearly out dated and quite basic. Back in early 2004, `hprince329 had a similar idea, and made a mock up design of a new Emoticon Legend. From the look of the comments, the programmers looked interested and it seemed as though something might actually happen! `hprince329's Emoticon Legend was a great concept, far better then the current one we have today. It also incorporated a number of new and exciting ideas, all of which would benefit the usual deviant enormously. However, nothing has happened and I’ve never heard why.

So I decided to take matters into my own hands. Using some of the existing ideas, along with a few of those from `hprince329 and a few of my own, I attempted to created a modern, up-to-date Emoticon Legend. I would have easily spent well over five hours working on original sketches for layout, navigation, design and colours as well as the incorporation of as many ideas as possible. Whilst I do not actually expect this to be implemented, I would like my ideas to be seen and perhaps even considered. Any critique on the design or any ideas about the layout or even some feature I haven’t thought of would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know what you think!

There are a number of new ideas in this design, here is a list containing the majority of them as they can be sometimes hard to see with a static image.

Possibly the biggest difference between the current Emoticon Legend and this one is the fact this one is part of deviantART, that is it won’t open in a new window, and it still contains the same styling and theme of deviantART.

You may also notice that in the top right hand corner of the white area, there is another tab to Moods. Recently with the introduction of deviantART Version 5, so to was the Moods System introduced. Having Emoticons and Moods in the same area is a sensible idea, and as they are both somewhat similar it will work effectively for the average user. This will also solve the matter on where to place the current list of Moods. Clicking that tab would open a similar window to what you see in front of you, with similar layout etc.

On the top frame, there is now a search bar. This would be used to search unofficial emoticons on deviantART.

Towards the bottom of the screen, there is a second search bar. This would be used to search through the official emoticons, using keywords. This function would allow users to find what they are looking for quickly with minimal hassle.

This official search will also allow you to find emoticons based on tags. So if you were to type in 'happy', the results would show five or six different emoticons that would be appropriate.

This design contains a new drop down menu allowing users to sort the emoticons into different categories. Whilst the old version had this, it was somewhat hidden. The menu idea is easy to see and easy to use. Selecting one of the categories shown will limit the number of emoticons you see, allowing you to find certain types, or for example you could search for emoticons based on who created them.

This brings me to probably one of the best features of this Emoticon Legend. The My Favourites feature. On the table on the right, in the far right column, there are +fav and –fav icons. Using this tool you can select your favourites of all the emoticons shown, and then when sorting the list, you can easily access your favourites. As shown in the example above, two of the emoticons seen have been added to the My Favourites list. To remove them you can simply reclick the correct icon.

The legal information regarding the use of deviantART’s emoticons is now in the bottom left, however it is always visible, rather then only when you scroll to the bottom of the screen.

On the emoticon list, there are now four columns. As explained above, the far right is used to determine which will appear in My Favourites. The first column shows the emoticon itself, while the second one shows the code that is used. However, the new feature in this design is that the creator’s name is always shown next to the emoticon. You can also sort the creators alphabetically with the sort function.

So there is the complete list for what I would like to see in our Emoticon Legend. Please feel free to comment on design, layout or with any ideas that you would/wouldn’t like to see.

onPageFavView v5

Welcome to the much anticipated v5 compatible release of onPageFavView. This user script opens the list of deviants who added the deviation to their favourites list on the page instead of in a pop-up.

To speed up deviation load times, the list does not load automatically. Instead, it appears when the user clicks on the [who?] link next to the favourite count (the link that normally opens a pop-up). Click again to close the list.

What is it?
A greasemonkey script that shows thumbnails of the previous two and next two deviations in the gallery you're viewing, underneath the current deviation. It allows you to skip between deviations in a gallery without having to use the back button or switch tabs.

Why?
Why not?
It's a feature I've been wanting for a while, and I've heard it requested more than a few times in the Suggestions forum.

How do I get it?
In order to use it, you must be using Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox, and you must have the Greasemonkey extension installed. Then, right click this link and choose "Install User Script". Next time you view a deviation, you should see a row of thumbnails underneath it.

Latest update: Panorama 2 beta released! This is a complete rewrite with new color adjustment features and a redesigned interface, It's still in beta! What is this?
This is a Mozilla Firefox extension that adds an image viewer to deviantART interface with support for panning (like Photoshop's hand tool,) interactive zooming, various color and contrast adjustment tools for more convenient full views. It's handy for viewing large deviations.This is part of the deviantEXPERIENCE extension series.

How to install?

How to use it?
Click the Panorama View link to the left of the deviation. Grab (click and drag) the deviation to move it around. Use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out the deviation; or if you don't have one use the zoom icons or the zoom slider at the bottom right corner. Various color and contrast adjustment tools are available from the icon row on the left

Important stuff!
It's HIGHLY recommended that you use this extension with Firefox 3.5 or later because it has a fast JavaScript implementation that's very beneficial to the image processing tools included. The new features are resource intensive processing-wise and will perform slow on older/slower computers. The original functionality (panning and zoom) is still very fast as it was, on even on older machines.

Routine maintenance to fix some issues on certain pages. Don't forget that if you're using Gallery V2, you must right-click the Greasemonkey icon from your status bar and choose 'Add thumbnail tools' from the User Script Commands menu.

Known Issues
The toolbox is not ready for v6 yet. This will be looked into when I have time.
The thumbnail tools and streams are broken in Firefox 3. This is due to differences in CSS interpretation. I'm looking for a solution that works on both FF2 and 3.

On many occasions I needed to update several deviations at a time - either files, descriptions or keywords. Every time I needed to do this, I needed to open each deviation in a separate tab, then iterate through them, clicking the 'Edit Deviation' button and waiting for the pages to load. And then I realised that it could be easier.

This script adds the following items below gallery thumbnails:
- Textbox containing the thumb code for the deviation, or the equivalent print code if the deviation is a print.
- Textbox containing a HTML link to the deviation and username code, specifically for adding to deviantART comments and notes.
- Link to edit the deviation (if it is yours). This allows you to edit several deviations in tabs.
- Link to delete the deviation (if it is yours).
- Link to report the deviation as a policy violation (if it is not yours).
The items appear only when you hover over a thumbnail, keeping things extremely minimal.
The toolbox also adds a little 'Edit journal' icon to the top-right corner of your journals, allowing you to instantly update or correct a journal.
The script also adds the name of the deviation you are editing to the page title, so that you can identify the tabs.

What is it? A Greasemonkey (GM) script for Firefox (FF) to show if a deviant you visit is one of your watchers.

Warning! This script was previously named "deviantART - Is this deviant watching you?".
I renamed it for various reasons, but since GM is using the name as key in the config, you have to uninstall the previous version, deleting also the associated preferences.

In the suggestion forum, I saw the Who watches you request, and it wasn't the first time... Apparently, lot of deviants want to know if a deviant watches them when they visit his/her pages.
I had the idea to write a Greasemonkey script to do this.

So, what do my script does? The screenshot says it all: If the deviant you visit (in his/her profile page, gallery or deviation) is watching you, the script adds on the right of the deviant name in the title bar a watch icon, so you can check this at a glance.
Also adds in the profile page a line above the Watch this deviant/Watching this deviant one.

In fact, if you edit the script (using Notepad for example, or a better editor if you have one!), you can deactivate the icon or the message, as you wish. See the comments at the start of the code to see how (lines below) those starting with //$$ Read these comments for instructions. It is better to do this before loading the script in FF, if you don't know how to edit it after...

If you have no watchers, well this script will do nothing...
If you have some watchers, when you go to your main page, you will see in the Recent Watchers box, on the right of the title, a new Update watcher list button.
If you have 20 watchers or less, just click on this button, and you are done: go visit some of your watchers, and see the magic works!
If you have more than 20 watchers, you have a Complete List link: click on it, a window listing the first 200 watchers (or less if, like me, you are an ordinary deviant...) appears, as usual.
Hit the End key and you go at the bottom of the page. Here, you have a checkbox and a button added by the script, below the navigation box.
For the first time, just hit the Update watcher list button. If you have 200 watchers or less, you are already done, close the window. Above this number, the script will load the next page in the window.
Just let it work through all the pages of watchers you have. At the end, like in other cases, a message box will display the total number of watchers found, confirming the end of the process.

Note: if you have a large number of watchers, like 20,000 to 50,000, the capture of the deviants can take a long time... You can even minimize this window and see the page numbers going in the title...
But sometime deviantART doesn't like these repeated requests and returns an error page. Or you closed the window, tired of waiting. Etc.
For these cases, there is a recovery/resume mechanism: go to the Complete List (first page), and click the Update watcher list button: the watcher capture will resume were it was. I was able to capture the 32,138 watchers of a deviant after many restarts...

What about new deviants?
If you have less than 20 new watchers, just click on the Update watcher list button in your profile page. The script will get the new names in this page and update your list.
If you are very popular or away for a long time, with more than 20 new watchers, click the Complete List link and in the Friends page, click the Update watcher list button. The page will be scanned. If the last deviant wasn't in the list, it is likely there are more, so the script will continue on the next page, until it finds a page full of known deviants.
If, for some reason, you prefer to regenerate fully the list (eg. to handle deviants no longer watching you), check the Rescan all check box and the script will clear the list and fill it again from scratch.
Note: the script doesn't handle automatically deviants no longer watching you: you have to rescan the
list to get rid of them.

Where does this list of watchers go?
I store it using the function GM_setValue. Greasemonkey puts these values in the user settings.
You can view these settings by typing about:config (and Enter) in the address bar of Firefox.
You can locate the settings of my scripts by typing phi.lho in the filter area: you will see GM creates the keys greasemonkey.scriptvals.http://Phi.Lho.free.fr//deviantART - Watching you?.xxx
You can even edit it... Or erase their content.
These settings are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\.default\prefs.js.
Path to user data (C:\Documents and Settings) might have been changed.
Note that this file seems to be written only when Firefox is stopped.

Side-by-Side notes

This is a miniskin that will hide the notes list and place the reply form next to the note - as you can see in the preview image.

The idea is that it makes responding to notes easier, as you don't need to scroll up and down as much, thus keeping your hands on the keyboard for typing.

There's a link to jump back to your inbox too, though if you're using tabs you shouldn't really need this

On lower resolutions (including 1024) some tweaking may be needed so that you can use the buttons below the reply form.

Deviant Statistics: Fully Conclusive V1.4
Deviant Statistics: Fully Conclusive (DS:FC for short) compiles a comprehensive list of useful statistics about users and displays them on deviants' userpages.

New in V1.4: See the total number of views over all your deviations from the Deviations tab.

There have been other scripts that perform very similar functions before this one - namely Deviant Statistics by ~falexx and deviantSTATS by `Solitude12 (lots of credit to both of them!). However, I wasn't fully satisfied with the aesthetics of either, and thought that there were other improvements that could be made. I started to work on my own, and before I knew it, I'd made something huge. Whereas the former uses the left hand side of the userpage, and the latter uses the right hand side, this script distributes its information across both sides of the page, and separates them into several tabs:

Deviations
- Most comments, views and favourites
- Most frequently used category and sub-category
Files
- Most downloaded
- Highest resolution image
- Largest file
Averages
- Pageviews per day
- Comments and favourites received per deviation
- How frequently on average the user submits a new deviation
Community
- Friends, watchers, comments and favourites given and received
- Comments given per favourite

DS:FC also reviews these statistics and attempts to make some assumptions about the user, which are displayed in the Hypotheses tab. This feature is purely for fun - have a look and suggest criteria for other deviant traits!

All hyperlinks relating to the user, including gallery and pageview stats are all bundled into the Tracking tab, where RSS feed links are also provided.

From the Options panel, you can choose whether or not to load statistics automatically when you visit someone's page. This might help those with slow computers/connections. It also provides visual feedback on whether you have the latest version of the script installed.

Warning: Because the interface uses the left and right panels of the userpage, you cannot use this script in combination with either of the two scripts mentioned above, or any other script that modifies these areas.

deviantPLUS v3

deviantPLUS is a custom user script written in javascript. It runs each time you visit deviantART and attaches a toolbar to comments, journals, forums, notes, shoutboards, deviation descriptions, and pretty much anywhere else you can type on dA. The toolbar has buttons for things such bolding, italicizing, underlining, hyperlinking, etc.

Version 3 is a complete rewrite, re-introducing the Preferences panel that was available in earlier versions and adding the ability to create and edit buttons. The design has also been completely redone with new toolbar and button graphics by ¢mynti.

Significant programming and design work was also done by `electricnet and =Solitude12.

A big thank you to ¢mynti, `electricnet, and =Solitude12 for their contributions to this script. Without you guys I doubt this thing would ever have been completed

While plowing for hours through the beta feedback forum looking for bugs to report to IT I realized this system is far from flawless.

using a simple forum thread to organize a beta-test with a few thousand testers is a bit too old-skool..
and not really appropriate for a cutting-edge website like deviantART.

So here is a little something that would definitly help making the whole testing process a lot smoother and more organized.

So this is what I came up with.
The idea is pretty simple:

Instead of using 1 thread to report all bugs.. use 1 forum.
Each beta-test gets its own subforum in the big beta-testing forum.

Users can report new bugs in the form of threads.
If other users experience the same bug, they can reply in that thread and provide extra information,
preventing users from reporting the same bug over and over.

If a bug has been solved, the thread can be marked as solved.. so everybody knows they issues has been solved.
If somebody posts something irrelevant the thread can be closed.. and ignored.

This way we would have a great lists of current and solved bugs.. and we can threat each bug individually.

To further smooth the process, we could add two mandatory fields that asks the users
to tell us what browser and OS they're using when reporting a bug ( I lost count of how many times I asked those questions the last 2 days.. )

And finally they could also have the possibility to add a screenshot to help describing the problem.
This way all the data would be centralized.. and not spread around free hosts all over the internet.

The big plus of this system, in terms of realisation, would be that it uses the already existing forum-system.
Which not only saves time for the developers, but feels natural to the users as well.

What is this?

This is clubSEARCH, an interactive search-able database of over 16,000 clubs. If you type in your search criteria into the "Search For" text box and press enter, you will see a list of clubs that match your query (either with their description, user name or key words, depending on which check boxes are selected). You will need to press the "Next Page" button or the right arrow key to see subsequent clubs after the first. On the results page, click the user name or avatar of the club to open a new window. I designed this as an idea for when club accounts are introduced on dA, and also to fill the gap while they are being developed

How do I edit a club's description or key words? If you have found a club that does not have a description or is lacking keywords, please follow the procedure for adding a club listed above. The program that manages clubSEARCH automatically adds a club with a description over the original entry if the original entry is lacking a description or key words (eg, the club displays "[No Comment]" or "[No Key Words]" in clubSEARCH).

How do I remove a club? If you find any clubs that have been banned please leave a comment with just the user name of the club (WITHOUT the :dev: or :icon: tags). Also, if you run across a club that has clearly stated on their front page journal that they have died or been abandoned, feel free to report these clubs as well. You may report multiple clubs: one per line in your comment (please do not skip lines)

What does "Activity Analysis" mean?

This was a quick reference feature I devised to quickly determine how active a club was at a glance. The colors are assigned as follows:
White: Active in the last week
Light Green: Active within the last month
Dark Green: Active within the last two months
Yellow: Active within the last year
Red: Active over a year ago, but after 2004
Black: Banned, has no journals, or was last active before 2004

Known Bugs

The Avatars and Stats won't display! This may be due to your firewall settings. This program communicates with a remote server to load the pages on DeviantART (with clubs stats & avatars). I find that temporarily lowering my firewall security allows me to view these features properly. However, this option may not be the solution for everyone, so I have included a "Basic Display" option on the search page if you do not want to or are not able to see the avatars and stats.

The Avatars and Stats still won't display! Recently, I have found that the server I have my files stored on may also be to blame, which is outside of my control . You may check the status of the server here: [link] my files are stored on Stoli: the top line of lights. If all the lights on the top row are green... then I blame the internet for not working

My Comments

I thought it was kinda silly that no one had made one of these kind of search engines yet, or at least the ones I found did not seem to have lasted long or listed many users . Shortly after I started running #TheList I found myself repeatedly referencing my internal database (used for the programs managing the club) to find clubs. My thoughts: Huh, it'd be neat if other users could access this. It'd be even better if the search could go through a lot of other directories. And I've been planning to learn ActionScript all summer anyway...

It'd also be cool if and when club accounts are implemented on dA that an official search engine be available to search through them

More about the search itself:
The search is not case sensitive. It considers a partial hit a successful hit (eg if you search for "car", a club with the word "cartoon" in it's description is considered a hit [or in the user name or key words, I'm simplifying here]).

I have been thinking about implementing a "NOT" modifier, so if you type "car NOT cartoon", the search will display results with the word "car" but without "cartoon" in their description. If you feel this would be useful to you, please let me know.

It would be very easy to add this option to search the help db from the profile page, and free up some extra space in the drag&drop toolbar for people with small screens (such as myself) to replace the help with something else.

Okay so every now and then people will make forum posts: [link] suggesting dA make a version of this private notebook feature that some sites have been implementing lately and everyone's always like "THAT'S A LAME IDEA BITCH" so I thought maybe this would help, because I don't think it's a lame idea at all.

_{(And yeah, it's just a rough example and I'm not saying it has to look like this, and I don't know how it would work if you didn't have it on your top bar, but you get the idea. And there's some space on the right side for.. I don't even know what. Maybe something, but maybe nothing, because it's a super simple feature. Maybe bold and italic buttons could go there.)}

Reasons it would be cool:

*It's better than using MSword because you can get to it from anywhere.

*It's better than using Google Docs or something similar because you won't have to remember to check your notes and then go sift through a bunch of documents to find one tiny but important thing you wrote to yourself 2 weeks ago.

*It's better than writing a list on your hand because a shower won't be able to screw up your plans.

*It's better than sticky notes because those things just don't stick when you need them to. D:

*If you're on dA all the time, maybe even a great deal more than any other site, like I KNOW a lot of people are, you'll see it every day.

*It's right there. All the time.

*It would (ideally) automatically save (or have a simple save button) and automatically be editable, all the time, like a piece of paper is.
No messing with anything.

*You don't have to have it on your top bar if you don't want to use the feature. You can just forget it exists if you want to, because it's not intrusive.

*As ~dire-musaera mentioned, it would come in very handy for an account used by multiple people!

When I posted my last deviation dAmn Chatroom Log, a lot of people wondered where I would store those logs.
I gave it some thought and here's what I came up with:

Each chatroom gets its own page. This page holds several features that could be useful when you're running a chat: a memberlist, funky statistics, a journal to announce contests and your chatroom log.

So that's it, nothing too special. I just wanted to create this. It allowed me to think about how I would like the new userpages and club system.

Anyway, suggestions are very welcome:

Please keep in mind: this is only meant to put across several ideas at once, and is NOT an intentional suggestion for a "new" or idealized version of deviantART.

The only way I could conceive of communicating all of my ideas simultaneously and clearly was to create a hypothesized version of dA.

^{I've always had myriad ideas that I thought would increase the fun of deviantART... and I was just sitting down to start designing one of them a couple months back, when a very obvious thing ocurred to me: I could just do them all! So before you is my (almost) every idea for deviantART, uniquely designed to be displayed as a compound epithet. I've been working on this for a very long time, and it's funny to see how some of the ideas have happened very closely to what i had already thought of! Great minds think alike, I guess.

I picture deviantART with full functionality... so as you look this over and read the brief descriptions, keep in mind that I've envisioned everything customizable---thereby making almost everything "movable" in some fashion or another. Also, I know this is huge and you may be thinking "what about smaller resolutions?", but I say to you... two columns instead of three and everything would be just as awesome. Or: upgrade your monitor.}

Everything has a sidebar these days, from applications to websites... and the reason is just because they're so damned functional. Choosing one for deviantART was only logical. I picture everything below the "Avatar, Name, and Stats" sections being closable/hidable, reducing them to simply the green bars with the titles.

My Quick Links
Not a stretch from the Navigation bar up top (in fact it's really no different at all, barring the look), but I think having them more centered allows them to be more useful, and when used in tandem with the Navigational icons above, you can then double the amount of actions you can make within deviantART. Or, for those of you who may not like the Navigation icons above, hide them all and simply use your Quick links in your sidebar!

My Control Panel
for all this stuff, you've got to have a place to house it. Enter the "Control Panel".

Profile Module Management
Think of it like iGoogle, My Yahoo, MySpace's internal modules, or your profile on Facebook. Arrange your entire Profile page (by module) how you like it, restricted only by columns. Your choice of two or three column layout. But then, imagine you can make public or private any module you like, as well as take advantage of a "minimize" feature in the event you'd like to have them all available to the public but are worried about it looking too cluttered with them all "open".

Deviant Power Mode
All of these are for the most part self explanatory, and not unlike the items above, would all be easily turned off and on with the click of a box. I do want to touch on a few of them, however.
Power Tutorial: basically, dA tutorials that are integrated to encompass an ultimate link and module augmentation multi-tool. The goal would be to provide deviants with excellent previews, useful extra information, and relevant next actions for almost any given link, section, or module on any given page.
Power FAQ mode: Just like the tutorials above, and relevant place that a deviantART FAQ might apply would create a mini pop-up window displaying the appropriate FAQ links----and perhaps even the Question prefacing the answer.
Condensed Journal: cut the available front-page text to half of what it is and offer a "Click here to read more" option at that stopping point. Many people loathe scrolling down a long page.

Collections Module
I felt this was very important to add, because as it is our recently collected Collections are shown NOWHERE beyond going into our favorites gallery. It would better our experience, I feel, to have the option to display these. Let's face it, Collections rock!

More, More, More
I've made more room for displaying more things in this design, such as Recent Deviations, Submitted News, etc. And while it seems as though I've cut down in other areas, such as the Wishlist, i have in fact presented them with the ability to Browse directly from the profile page, from first to last, one at a time. This is the same idea with our Featured Deviation.}

^{I've skimped some on the Ad-space, this is true... but I believe wholeheartedly in AdCast, so I've spot-lighted it better in the upper right margin. in truth, there's still room up there for banners with a slight decrease in Icon size, which would really only affect the unsubscribed. Skins are a given, everyone wants to see those... which brings me to my next point: I didn't so much mean to insult Creative's choice in the aesthetics of "v.6 Sleek". With no other choice, I have to say I love the new look in comparison to the old. Here, I merely wanted to try a new approach in what was already done; my take on it was as a skin-option that would hybrid v.5 and v.6 in a modified way.

I'd love to have you guys pick my brain on some of the stuff here. So if you want to talk hypothesis, or are wondering about anything I haven't described... ASK AWAY!!!!

Okay, while the visualisation might actually look pretty simple this is a pretty big and complex idea:

Collaborations are pieces of art created by more then 1 artist.
The example I used in my visualisation is a journalskin designed by =sinthux and coded by me.

The problem however is, deviantART doesn't support collaborations.
And I believe they should

The reason is pretty simple: it's a great concept.
2 artists working together one 1 piece of art, enriching each other and grow artistically.
It's basically everything deviantART stands for.

How it would work:

1 of the collaborators submits the collaboration and adds the collaborators.
The collaborators receive a notification of this and approve it.
The collaboration shows up in the gallery of EACH collaborator en they all receive notifications
about comments and favs posted on their collaboration.

Apart from that, the collaboration is treated exactly the same as any other deviation.
( and shows up in the same galleries as well )

edit: added a notification that's being send when you're added to a collaboration. To become a collaborator you simply click "approve"

dA Portfolio Contest

My entry for the Portfolio Contest.

Well, of course I couldn't resist to participate on this great contest..

Some info about my 3-page layout. ( since it has some fancy features that need to be explained.. )

first: If people are logged out they shouldn't see the "become deviant" buttons and links. It just doesn't look very professional. This place could be used to link to deviantArt or to a page about this wonderful feature.

The top of the page contains your full name and your nickname ( that links to your userpage )

Showcase Page:

This page would be the standard page, as in the first one you see when you access the portfolio.

On the left we have some sort of mini-gallery that contains a limited amount of artwork, selected by the artist himself. Look at it as 6 featured deviations ( which could be selected through some sort of slot system, similar to the customize frontpage option )

Below the showcase there's a little box with your most recent devations ( with small thumbs, to make your featured deviations stand out a bit more ) and a link to your gallery.

On the right we have the fullview for the selected deviation. ( standard this could be the first, or a random, from the 6 featured deviations ) With the title, description, a link to the deviations and the number of comments and favourites. ( because one wants to brag with the amount of favourites I have )

About Page:

This page contains everything one needs to know about you once you captured his/her interest: Profile, Bio, Resume, Awards and reviews.

Now this a a feature I really like: it allows others to write a review about you, similar to devious comments BUT becouse this review appears on your portfolio ( a rather special place ) you would have the option to approve the review first, so you would have total control about what appears on YOUR page. ( what do you think about my review by the way )

Contact Page:

The most important page of your portfolio: even if your portfolio is sexy as hell without a contact page it's completely useless

On the left we have the standard contact information.
But on the right people would have the ability to send a note directly to you. Even people ( talent - scouts f.ex ) who aren't logged in to deviantART. ( the note could be send by some sort of bot account.. )
Since the easier it is for one to contact you, the faster they will do so.

Just another little suggestion. $spyed recently put the idea forward but I always thought that it would be kinda cool to have a little icon by our names instead of generic code. Just a visual expansion on his idea

On the left you can see what they would look like on someones homepage. In the middle is what they would look like in a comment and on the right is the key. Obviously I ain't done icons for every type of member and these wouldn't be the icons that would be used (although I did a sweet job )

A vote for mrrste is a vote for win oh and people I used as examples didn't know I used them

dAv6 Concept - Front Page

I've seen the mock-ups for v6, and I've seen the beta website, and although there are some great ideas being implemented, the design leaves me deeply disappointed. It looks like we've gone backwards in time, to something like v3 (see the archives: [link]). The page is too densely packed in some places, while in others there is too much blank space. The use of fills and borders and rounded edges makes things needlessly complex. The form controls for the search box look like they come from an old Mac OS, tinted green.

I had actually started working on some designs since before the screenshots, so I thought I might as well show it rather than stay silent. It combines my own ideas with the things I've already seen so I don't take credit for every single detail in the design. To avoid pasting labels across the entire image, I'll describe the interface below.

Theme
The design stays reasonably close to v5 in terms of shape and colour - I much prefer the grey-green over the strong green chosen for the main header of the proposed v6. Still, I have made the green of the main header here slightly stronger.
One thing I always found odd about v5 was the way the content funnels in from the top, leaving large unused margins at the sides, so I changed that.
For the main body, I've chosen a background color somewhere between the dAv5 dark pages and the dAv5 light pages - hopefully a good compromise between traditional dark colours, and hurting people's eyes on deviation pages with white backdrops.

Header
As proposed by the v6 concepts, and already done in the Chatrooms, the deviant bar is at the very top, which is beneficial in several ways. This is an example of what logged out users see. To see what it looks like when logged in, see the second concept.
The logo, navigation and search looked rather out of place, floating around in sea of green in the proposed v6 beta. I'd rather see them in a common container, and it's here where I show off the stronger tint of the color scheme with an attractive smooth gradient.
The icons, from left to right, are Browse, Shop, Collections, News, TodAy, Chat, Forum and Help & FAQ. The final button is the customize button, which acts like this: [link] This may only appear to logged-in users. When you hover over an icon, the associated text will appear in the space above it to explain what it is. Having just icons looks better and also allows you to have more links on your header row.
The search box in the v6 beta really annoyed me with its ugliness. This one looks much the same as v5, but smoothed out like the rest of the design, and including the drop-down box which will allow context-insensitive searches. Advanced search? I'll show you that concept on another screenshot.

Front Page Content
Imagine a new user coming to dA for the first time. All they see is a bunch of pictures and a big Join button on the right. That hardly helps explain dA's purpose. Here, the company's motto and tagline appear at the very top, along with the mascot.
On the left, the thumbnail streams appear as usual, but they can also be expanded/contracted if desired. The Browse button provides extra help for those wishing to see more art. This is replaced by the Customize button when you're logged in.
On the right, we have news articles! Under that is the Join section, much the same as before. Below that is the Newsletter subscription box, which currently only shows up on Shop pages. Also included here is a link allowing users to go to the About Us page to find out yet more about dA (hopefully the v6 About pages will show more than just a list of the administrators).

Footer
It is proposed that thumbnail streams and the entire contents of the Today page be included in the footer of v6 - [link] Come on now; that's rather bloated. Now, perhaps this information can appear on the Front Page, but for all other pages the footer should be consistent and minimal - if people really want to see polls and deviousness awards, they will go to the dedicated Today page. As done in the v6 beta, the footer links are nicely segregated on the bottom line. Where did the Partners list go? I don't know... I hope those partners don't get mad that it's gone.
