Waterfall Country

We first passed by these falls in the early afternoon but it was pretty busy with a bunch of bathers chilling in the water with a few beers. Looked fun! Couldn't be doing with that amount of cloning though so ended up returning for a people-free image a bit later in the day. Unfortunately the light wasn't as good by that point but I couldn't exactly NOT take a shot could I?

These falls are truly magnificent, you can just see where they start way up in the background there. I reckon they'd be unreal in autumn and may very well head back...

I'm not 100% sure about this one to be honest, I have others without the rock bottom right so the flow seems to come out of the bottom of the frame but I dunno, I quite like how the water exits frame right and creates another 'curve'. Can't seem to get it to pop the way I want with the processing either though so am open to constructive critique!

I know I've been a no-show (and possibly worse) lately. I apologize to Dani and Slick Willy for my failure to contact when in the Rockies, but I had a workshop (18 total) in tow. Believe me, the best part of your day was NOT running into us.

it was a great workshop, and I got to see my wonderful daughter..(she just happened to have a ticket on the SAME boat to Spirit Island, talk about coincidence)

.....so there I was at the canyon, had the 45 all set up at MatherPoint, and 20 minutes before sunset a gang of tourists climb into my foreground. So I hustle, hike about a quarter mile to to the other end of the viewpoint, find another foreground and get set up just in time, when the same group of people climb into this setup. I'm like, really? again? what'd I do?

So I just stuck a longer lens on it. Who needs foreground?

(PS just to be clear, it was NOT Vince and the gang, although it sounded a lot like them)

As I now have my Lee Big Stopper filter, along with the adaptor ring and holder to properly use it, I decided to venture out at sunset to see what the sky was like. I noticed some amazing clouds in the distance as I was driving locally, and then realised a lot were around the Forth Bridges.
This shot was taken from S. Queensferry, a very popular tourist destination, and also popular for locals and people getting married to have their receptions.

This is a manual blend of two separate exposures, one taken at 1/2 a second, and the other a long exposure at 240 seconds.

Semiramis

According to legend, Semiramis was the daughter of the sea-goddess Derketo of Ascalon in Syria and a mortal. Her mother abandoned her at birth and drowned herself. The child was fed by doves until she was found and brought up by Simmas, the royal shepherd.

It appears ironic that this ship, named after her, seems to have met Derketo in her watery grave, rusting quietly to oblivion on a rocky beach in Andros Island.

... or maybe not so quietly. We kept her company for 4 mornings and afternoons waiting for a break in the sky and had the chance to hear her moaning as she settled deeper into the sea. Imagining the thunderous noise of her impact upon the rocks on the day her journey ended was unavoidable. As is her fate.

Starry Night

Finally I get my starry shot of the windmill I've been wanting for the past year

Really there are only a few days each month when attempting this shot was possible as to get good star visibility it's best to shoot around a new moon. Of course a clear night is also a must and several months this past year the two never coincided. Other times I was simply too busy with other engagements or afflicted by an uncharacteristic apathy and laziness (call it seasonal affective disorder or something!).

Anyway, last night ticked all the right boxes and I was psyched to go give it a try. Probably a little excited cos I rushed out the door not long after sunset, drove the 15 miles there and realised immediately on getting out of the car I didn't have my bloody tripod. Muppet! I pissed around with a makeshift support on my bag and coat for the best part of an hour before deciding it was hopeless. Dejected and mad at myself I got back in the car and drove home under starry skies. Damn. Can't be having this.... gotta go back...

So I packed a sandwich, mini bottle of whisky, whacked a load of tunes on my phone and headed back out about 11:30, determined to have something to show for my efforts. After about an hour of experimenting with points of view, camera settings and lighting methods I had formulated a gameplan.

The shot went something like this:
Open the shutter on bulb mode, paint the windmill with a powerful handtorch, fire an external flash into the foreground on 1/64 power, leg it up to the mill, fire two flash bursts into the ceiling on 1/8 power, search for the red light of my camera in the field so I could find my way back to it, wait about half a minute, close the shutter.... all the while with my playlist blaring on full volume in my pocket. I must have looked a right nutter having my little one-man rave and shining lights everywhere! Fortunately I was alone with nobody to witness my madness

Eventually got home just before 3...

Some of you are probably getting sick of seeing this windmill by now, well you'll be glad to know I've only got one more shot to get of it - autumn harvest so I have one from each season.

Painted Woods

Impressions of a bluebell wood in the Chilterns in the dappled light of golden hour. The abstract blurring effect was created in-camera by panning upwards during the 1.3 second exposure.

Sometimes it can be quite a challenge doing justice to the magic and beauty of a bluebell wood at the height of its bloom... for me there's just something about the abstract approach that leaves me with the 'feel' for being there. Thoughts/crits welcome as always!

OK, heres how this one was made. I was sitting on the res at sunset watching the clouds and said, (literally) I have a gut feeling about the canyon rim tomorrow morning...so I got in the truck, drove there, hauled my tired sorry ass out of a really warm bed at 5 in the morning and staggered down to the rim, being careful not to step on my eyeballs...

this is what happened. I managed to stay out of my own way enough to get this. no eyeballs were injured. I love it when a plan comes together

btw, I think I can see my gut outa my periphery, so no worries...

This day was to end with a moonrise, a full moon at it. Unfortunately as myself, and two mates, drove further to the east coast of North Berwick, the huge, dark clouds rolled in and blocked out any appearance of the moon.
I wasn't going to walk away from the 40 mile drive in the snow, and ice without any shots, so I used the clouds to my advantage! The temperature on the beach was around -12 degrees celcius, but with the sea, and wind factor, it felt about -20!

The location is rather touristy and you end up with a lot of shots that have been done a million times. The most interesting ones are those that cut bits and pieces. Unfortunately there is no way to convey the majesty of the falls that way. Oh well...

what? could it be? the rhino going all religious/metaphysical on us?

not at all, just a (bad) pun on the location, which is Hallo Bay Alaska. They land the bush plane on the beach, which is slanted a good 20 degrees. It goes like this.

me, to 25 year old freckled face babe of a bush pilot. "Where are we going to land?"

babe, I mean bush pilot says,.... "on the beach"

me..... "like come on, seriously"

bush pilot.... "first we buzz it to shoo off the bears and the wolves, and to make sure no logs have rolled up in the surf."

me, to avoid sounding even more like an idiot.... "roger that"

anywho, there was a grizz standing just over out of frame to the right. he walked about a hundred yards behind us while I shot this, or so they told me while it happened....

apparently, (this is what the other guy shooting with me said) while I was focusing through live view on this image, an eagle carrying the tattered remains of an American Flag, swooped down and fought with the grizz over the remains of a fish on the beach.

oops, guess I missed that one....can't be everywhere...

Should I Stay or Should I Go

one of the most difficult things to do in this business is deciding which way to jump. That is, deciding where to go.

So based on conditions and best educated guesses you pick a spot. Then you go to your appointed location and stand around second guessing yourself until it happens or not. Its a function of the human condition to start concluding that the grass is greener somewhere else. In this case I was pacing around in the fog, dead sure that the weather was breaking up somewhere else.

Why would I feel that way? Why not? It sure wasn't happening here. But then the voice of reason started to compete with the swelling panic rising like bile in my throat that I would manage to waste another opportunity and screw yet another pooch. And so, after waging a complete Shakespearian drama in head (complete with the ghost sequences), I stayed, eventually shooting one of the great sequences of my career...

Bali Hai Moon

The full moon sets over picturesque Bali Hai on Kauai's north shore.

To create a realistic looking moon it was placed back in at a larger size as the human eye sees at approx 70mm. This was taken at 16mm.

Captured last evening in rural Longmont, Colorado when *Glitch-Chaos *daskibum and myself were shooting. Anyone who knows me know I love Sunflowers, and every year I look forward to finding where the gigantic fields are, as they often change location yearly. Did I say gigantic field? I mean huge, as in Sunflowers as far as your eye can almost see. We shot this field for almost 3 hours last night, so you can expect MANY shots to come!

Fire Falls Reprise

"Fire Falls Reprise"

Ah, the beauty of the chase. For those of you who dont remember, I had shot this location about a month ago. [link] is the shot. My original idea is close to this capture. I was thinking sun in the gap. Sunstar coming in...etc. Well, this is closer. I was instructing a photo tour at the time I shot this so couldnt work the scene as much as I hoped but I will only have another week or 2 before it is done for the season. Gotta keep at it!

A very tricky shot to process as I needed 4 exposures to pull it off. 1 for most of the image, 1 with my finger over the sun to help some of the flare, 1 for most of the sky and 1 for just a bit more detail in the sun area....though couldnt get as much back as I wanted.

I just got back for a 3 day trip to Olympic National Park. I was there for work but I got a few photos in too. Unfortunately dinner ran a little late and we didn't get up to the top of the ridge until the last few minutes of sunset so I missed most of the show. I think this one still turned out though. I will be going back to the park again in a couple weeks so hopefully I will get some more shots. I have a few more shots I will try and post over the next few days.

So as discussed in the previous image this is taking almost the same scene and completely going the other direction with the shutter speed. Super long. About 2min worth. Optimally the clouds have more color but I do like the fire coming from behind. Enjoy the contrast!

Another local location at sunset as I don't have a lot of time to travel far through the week with work all day. This is the Binny Craig on the right, a volcanic plug in the Bathgate hills, West Lothian. The Binny Craig is one of the highest points between Cairnpapple and Arthur's Seat, affording clear views across the Forth to the North, out to the Pentlands in the South, and Arthur's Seat in the East.

Cairnpapple Glow

This is Cairnpapple, one of the most significant prehistoric monuments in Scotland. Located in the Bathgate Hills, West Lothian in the south-east Lowlands.
The archaeology on the main site here spans a remarkable period of some 4000 years of activity, from about 3500 BC through to c.500 AD, with its major features being a Neolithic henge and circle, followed by a series of three Bronze Age cairns with cist burials, and a Late Iron Age cemetery.

I have shot this location before, but quite some time ago when my photography, and processing was nowhere near to the standard they are at now. The Cairnpapple hill is on the left where a couple relax taking in the summer sunset. I couldn't resist using the fireweed in the foreground, as the last of the light kissed across it.
