Cape du Couedic Lighthouse
Kangaroo Island

This lighthouse is located in the far south west corner of Kangaroo Island in Flinders Chase National Park. After a long journey from Adelaide earlier in the day, Keith , Amy and I (guests from Hong Kong) rested just a little too long at our caravan park before heading out for sunset. The spectacular rays of light occurred all as we were driving to this location and all but dissipated by the time we were able to set up for photographs.

Wind spiraled around this cirque while the lake froze, trapping waves at their crest.

The ice was only about 2 inches thick, but my friend assured me that it was enough to hold us. I wasn't so sure though when pings and other noises like sonar started echoing under us. Then my friend slipped and cracked the ice and his head. Luckily, the ice didn't give!

This is a composite of 7 f 2.8 exposures. Like my previous aurora image, this is one exposure for the aurora and mountains and 6 at different focal points for the foreground blended in post.

ABOUT THE IMAGE:
During my time in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta Canada I visited Moraine Lake on a number of occasions. I continually went back there not only to capture it under varying conditions but simply because the place is AMAZING. Each and every time I made it up there I would sit and stare in awe. It is hard not to.

Prior to my latest visit of this location I had captured it under your typical sunny summer conditions and on other occasions completely or partially frozen over but I still wasnt satisfied. I wanted it snow covered with the lake in its liquid state.

On this particular occasion I was driving back to where I was living in Canmore, Alberta, Canada from Olympic National Park in Washington U.S.A. It was a long day of driving and after just having spent almost 2 months living out of my van/tent on the road I was ready to get home to Canmore. Anyway, I was just one hour from Canmore at 10:30pm when it started to snow pretty heavily, enough so that I was convinced it was going to stick (It was fall so the temperatures had just began to take a dive becoming cold enough for snow to not melt as soon as it landed). I thought to myself, this may be the last and only opportunity I get to shoot Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks blanketed in snow. I figured it was too good of an opportunity to pass up and spent the night in the van hoping the conditions cleared in the morning.

Im happy I decided to stick it out for one last night. What a magic morning.

Taken in February this year after winter storms had damaged the fishermen's piers at Carrasquiera.

I've photographed these piers a number of times over the last 4 years, and while this is certainly not the most dramatic, nor does it have the "best" sunset, this is my favourite of all my shots from this location.

Taken on a troubling day and dedicated to my friend Ashwina.

This weekend , I took a drive to Lochiel , 100km north of Adelaide where I had passed this lake many times. The lake is the site of an abandoned salt works and the fence in many parts is non existent. A short stroll from the national highway and I was walking on crusted salt covered by a thin sheen of water from the previous night's light rain. The pink hues of salt pans never cease to amaze me and the water added the tremendous bonus of the reflections.

Another of the most accessible and photogenic Tors on Dartmoor, this place illustrates perfectly what a Dartmoor Tor is all about. Eroded granite stacks and scatter backdropped by moorland and heath.

Editting done: I upped the contrast and saturation, and lowered the gamma slightly.

Edit: No, I did NOT use photoshop for this image. Like you can see above the editting done is minor. I took this photo on a misty morning in a forest where the snow, which had conserved the colours of the leafs on the ground well, had almost melted away. The reason why the path is white is because of the left-over snow, the reason why the background is white/greyish is because of the thick fog and the reason why the leafs are red is because they were If you got good circumstances you don't need to post-process much.

Where to start with this image. This is one of my favorite locations on the island and hadnt been here in well over a year...wtf. With some free time on Saturday I was debating between 2 locations for sunset and ended here. While hiking down the trail I was thinking with the clear skies it would be fun to try a technique I've been meaning to give a whirl...combing one exposure for the landscape while being able to see the stars.

Taking out my fancy phone and using Star Walk I was able to find that the Milky Way would be in this approximate position just after sunset. So composed, set my exposure and waiting for the light to drop low enough to get the first shot...then wait...and wait. Finally got dark enough to get a shot of the stars but the Milky Way wasnt far enough over! Rats. Spent the next 90 min or so waiting for the 'cloud' to move across the sky in to my composition. While taking the exposure I thought it might be fun to immediately tilt up and take another to possible blend in to make a pano. The Milky Way was arching over the entire sky but alas couldnt get it all

The processing involved is kinda ridiculous and took me a while. The trick is to get the landscape image to look as night timey as possible. Blending them together was just a massive PITA and it's not perfect...but definitely printable...LARGE!

It was great to finally get to see the forest for myself. The Bristlecone Pine trees are considered to be one of the oldest living organisms on the planet, some of which are well over 4000 years old. The skeletal remains of the dead trees make for some interesting shooting subjects.

It's an age since I submitted here....apologies.

Although I've hardly been shooting landscapes (it's wedding season now) I've still got lots of work that I should add to my gallery here.

Anyway, here's my most recent landscape. Taken last week about an hour after sunset. The lack of clouds made it a boring sunset, but perfect for shooting the stars in the nights sky.

This is Castelejo beach, which I've photographed many times before. On Portugal's protected south west coast, it's a long way from any built up areas and has less light pollution than many beaches in the Algarve. I was completely alone on the beach when I took this, there probably wasn't anyone else within kilometers of me. No mobile reception, just the dark sky, the stars and the noise of the ocean.

I worked by torchlight, composing and focusing by taking practice shots as most of the details in this shot weren't visible to the naked eye - I couldn't see the rock, couldn't see the yellow light (which is ambient light from a few towns further up the coast).

To record this light, the camera is set to a high ISO and the aperture is wide open.

After outdriving and shooting a monster stormcell in the Tsaucheb valley all afternoon, the storm headed Southwards into the dune sea just a few km short of the Sossusvlei 4x2 parking lot and I headed into the cracked pans to get ready for sunset. The magical recipe of geographical circumstances at Sossus did what I knew it would and the sun dipped in below the cloud cover briefly illuminating the dunes in blood-red light and painting a partial rainbow in the storm. I've experienced a lot of amazing sunsets in my life, but the location of this was one was just too good to be true and I all I could utter was a few laughs of disbelief.
