NATURE AS AN ARTIST - Lofoten 1013

This Ice-Bay was one of my favourite spots we were able to visit in the snowbound Lofoten/Northern-Norway. Cracking ice-formations are perfect to use as a fantastic foreground. As I stumbled over the slippery rocks I was glad that I had not to take an unwilling bath in the subarctic sea. With a manual exposure blending I tried to represent the scene as I experienced it on site. Hope you like it .

'Etu Moana' is the Maori word for blue starfish.

I just returned from a fantastic trip to Aitutaki Atoll in The Cook Islands in the heart of the South Pacific. I had a feeling that a great sunset would materialize this night and I spent 3 hours walking up and down the beach looking for a suitable foreground and wasn't having much luck until I glanced down and saw this little guy. He was invisible without polarized sunglasses and luckily I had just put mine on. Believe it or not, these guys move pretty fast and I had to use a high ISO to keep the shutter speed up and hold the limb movement to a minimum. This was a fairly productive trip photographically and I will be posting more shots from these beautiful islands over the next couple weeks.

Canon 5D MkII 16-35mm lens at 16mm
5 seconds at f20 ISO 320 and a 2 stop hard graduated neutral density filter.

Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel

The bay in which lies the famous Abbey "Mont-Saint-Michel" is affected by strong tides. It is said that the water flows times faster at high tide than galloping horses. Also the treacherous sand can hide quicksand fields. Caution is advised when one ventures into this bay!

Cape Fréhel after the storm

This for me was the most extraordinary experience i always had with the weather. The whole day was grey and rainy - never really thought the sunset will be a cracker.
22:00: It was still heavy raining but the sky suddenly appeared in bold colours. I went out with all my rain gear and hoped for the rain to stop.
22:08: Miraculously, the rain stopped at the peak of the spectacle. I had just enough time to clean my filters, already the clouds moved away and the spectacle had gone... This was one of my most intensive and unexpected experience in my life as a photographer.

Druides baie - Pointe du Van

Close to france most westerly mainland Pointe du Raz, lies Pointe du Van. According to a legend the bay between these two landmarks were used to bring dead druids to the Île de Sein for burial. Nowadays especially Pointe du Raz is a great tourist attraction. However the non-inferior Pointe du Van with the little chapel Saint-They, is a more calm place.

Along a Forgotten Way

Shot recently in the local woods under a soft rain. The various autumn colors combined with fog created a very enchanting atmosphere, I enjoyed staying around this old beech tree and his wonderful colors. The forgotten pathway fading in the fog added a nice touch of mystery to the scene.

Good morning in Icelandic

My second picture of this wonderful place - this time an original without panoramacrop.
That perspective is well known among us photographers. I couldn´t leave without hasn´t shoot it .
Of course i don´t want to deprive you not this gigantic "almost" arctic sunrise.
Thanks to my extreme wide angle I could bring the Kirkjufellfalls with the Kirkjufell in the background and the rising sun on one photo.
You are on the legendary Peninsula Snaefellsness in Iceland.

The incandescent lamps of the village of Jericoacoara cast a warm glow over the coastal sand dunes during this 25 second exposure of the Milky Way and Southern Cross. The otherworldly scene is reminiscent of the photos NASA has published from the Mars rover 'Opportunity'. The Southern Cross is at the lower right of the Milky Way.

Sunrise barely existed on this morning so I was thankful for the small part in the sky, even if it was all of only 50 seconds. By the time I recomposed it vanished, and the little precipitation that helped me out with the sun beams had no sooner later reached me.

Fire Of Fall

Photo thoughts--- There is a place where I go in which I just feel at home. It is hard to describe but if any of you have ever felt it before then you know what I am talking about. It is where your spirit feels at home, where everything just feels right, it is that sense of belonging that no other place has and that sense of longing for it when you aren't there. It is hard to put into words unless you have ever felt it and for me, that place is Estes Park, Colorado. This is the place where my heart, soul and creative mind call home.

Photographed on a cool Autumn morning of our photo meetup last year on the shores of Lake Estes, the sky simply turned to fire. I used 2 ND8s, a CPL and a Grad ND to slow the shutter down to almost 14 seconds and in doing so it intensified the light & color. I love the reflection going on here of the sky and clouds in the water. Know what else? I just processed this image this morning, ya I am quite backlogged you can say lol

First of all, sorry for the lack of posting but Marianne, Charlotte and I were busy preparing and then finally enjoying our trip in New Zealand from which we just returned. About this shot.....

The location is 13km into the Routeburn track from the Divide in Fiordland National Park. The conditions when I started the trek could only be described as wet.......pouring rain, small rivers became streams to splash across along the trail, little visibility, a roaring 174m waterfall (Earland falls) requiring a detour at its base. All of us who arrived at the Lake Mackenzie hut that evening were sodden through despite our waterproof gear. As such, it was hard to get the motivation to sit lakeside at sunset, but the rain had stopped as we arrived so a little hope turned into smiles as this scene evolved over the still green waters of the lake. A moment to savour ! ps. Charlotte and Marianne were down in Milford sound enjoying similarly spectacular conditions!

La Playita

Hello,

This is a picture from my last trip in Patagonia... We were here in the deep valley of Rio Electrico, near the roofs of mount Fitz Roy. We were planning to reach the circo de Los Altares on the Hielo Continental icefield.

This morning we ad an amazing sunrise on this place called "La Playita", on the shore of Lago Electrico. The weather was amazingly quite, with no wind. Some really rare conditions in this area. These conditions offered us a great reflection of the Fitz Roy peak, in the morning glow...

These mountains are really different from what we know in France with the Alps... they're really impressive and I'll keep great remembers of this trip.

The day was beginning to fade away, I was on the summit of mount Civrari (Susa Valley, Italy) and after a few moments of contemplation I took this shot.

This mountain is not particularly high (2.302 m / 7.552 ft), nevertheless you can enjoy an incredible view over numerous valleys. Especially on evenings like this one!
Obviously I consider mist as an added value, a great friend, in fact on a normal sunny day the view from this summit is always spectacular, but not so rich of mystery and mystical tones.
The highest pyramid-shaped mountain at the horizon is the well known Monviso, the symbol of Cottian Alps.

People often tell you that "you have been lucky" in taking a particular shot. Oh well, I've climbed this mountain about twenty times, that was my "luck" so much love, dedication, physical and mental efforts... and only at the twentieth time I have seen and documented this landscape.

The Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills at sunrise. I sat below the arch on this stormy morning getting pelted with rain and wind praying that the clouds in the east would break up to allow some light onto the sierra and the storm clouds. Luckily enough, right at sunrise, light peered through the clouds and illuminated the scene. Too bad Mt. Whitney was shrouded in clouds, but it still made for a beautiful photo none the less.

A picturesque sunrise above the Alps with view of the Grat Mountain between Diepen and Rophaien. The grass on the mountain slopes appears very soft in the morning light. The contrast between light and shadow accentuates the curved slopes of the Grat very nicely.

This photo of the Matterhorn taken on a cold evening in October conveys a mystic atmosphere. After the first snowfall, the Stelli Lake is slightly snow-covered but still ice-free. The long exposure captures the moving clouds above the mountain tops of the Valais Alps.

Sorry for the prolonged absence from dA. Life has been incredible busy of late with weddings, home renovations, work publications, and of course, Charlotte taking up most of my time. I've recently acquired a 5dmk3 and hope to revisit Iceland in winter to take high iso images of aurora in particular. This one was taken during our 2010 trip which is filled with fond memories.

Marianne and I will be heading off to New Zealand for 3 weeks at the end of April and we can't wait to test out the new camera's abilities! Happy Easter everyone

Salt Planet

As the dead sea slowly declines, the back-and-forth motion of its waves coats everything in an icy-white layer of salt. I've found everything from a salt-enveloped sandal to white tree-trunks, long lost since the times when the water level was higher.
This morning was truly amazing. The clouds were so heavy I didn't even have to use filters. This image, the first of a series, was shot with just a bare lens and a tripod.

Vitaleta Re-edit

Still going back over old images and reprocessing them in Capture NX2. I always felt this shot was a little lacking in contrast in the foreground, and didn't really "pop", so I've tried to remedy that. Also re-edited "Sanctuary", "Piano Grande" and "In The Shadow of Mountains"

The Photo

Another iconic scene in Tuscany, Capella di Vitaleta is usually a sunset location with the days last light illuminating the front of the building. I took this on my first morning there, the same morning that I shot "Two" which is a little to the right of this scene, a wonderful dawn when the weather conspired to fill Val d’Orcia with low lying mist.
The farmhouse of Belvedere is a much more common dawn location, but I wanted to see if I could get something different, and so found a place to shoot in a different part of the valley on my first morning there.
I was faced with a constantly changing sea of mist between the hills, and although I hadn’t originally intended to shoot the chapel, as I didn’t think it would work as a backlit shot, it was too good an opportunity to miss as the first light of dawn coloured the sky above it.

I metered from the green of the field and used a 3 stop nd grad filter to control the highlights of the sky.

Seascape Heaven

One could spend a lifetime photographing the potential waterscapes of the 1km of beach at Kogelbay. When you live a 40 minute drive from it, it creeps into your soul that you will never get the perfect shot of it and that you can always improve. So I shoot it at least once a week when I'm at home, sometimes 3 times a week. It has become part of my life, and few things are as relaxing and soothing to my soul as a sunset on the sands of Kogelbay. Maybe a beer at the end of a hectic week, or your bed after being away from home for weeks.

I'm trying to mix things up with the standard mountain compositions. I went crazy with dodging and burning here and gave it a duotone look using levels. Opinions welcomed. I know my last BW of kogelbay wasn't met with open arms so I'd like to know what you think of this one.

I was there on Sunday. I sat on a rock stack in the rain for an hour with no results. I went again on Monday with much better results like this image. The cape has a good 80% layer of high clouds right now with a clear horizon, so I'm heading there again for sunset today. Hopefully it's a flaming red one

The rain storm reflects against the sunset over the eastern plains of Colorado above the massive Sunflower fields. The color simply exploded with painting the highlights a bright pink in the clouds, creating a stunning scene.

Essay: Why God CAN'T create meaning

So it turns out there is something God cant do. Okay, two things.

An angry religious person who had read some of my essays recently scolded me for not believing. WHY ARE WE HERE!? was one point he screamed in protest. Although this wasnt the voice of someone who was interested in the answer, I tried to explain that we create our own meaning. It wasnt until later that I thought of the perfect response to this objection:

What are some things that are important to you?
 
(He or she lists some of their values, such as family, friends, art, music, sports, etc.)

Hypothetically, if you were to discover that we did come about through naturalistic processes, and there really is no God out there, would those things still be important to you?

(He or she would almost certainly say yes.)

There you go. You can and do create your own meaning. You dont need an outside force to tell you what to care about; you are free to decide that for yourself.

This scene is what greets the hiker walking on the Laugavegur trail's 2nd day. After the first day of walking through fumaroles and rhyolite mountains, passing one ridge after another, this final one leads to one of the most incredible scenes I can remember. It's cliche to say that it reminds me of Rohan, but I can't think of a more suitable place other than perhaps in New Zealand where the movies were actually filmed. This pano suffers from quite a few imperfections regarding lens flare but for the purpose of sharing a grand scene, I think that is less important.
