I finally got my work back from the October shows, now I'm in the process of scanning all the images. This part sucks because I have a tiny scanner and work way to large.
oh well, here is the first image I've scanned
it's 20"x31", done on Stonehenge printmaking paper mounted to masonite
I used watercolors for a base coat then rendered the skin with prismacolor pencils
after that I busted out the house paint (Behr) for the sea and sky
then I moved on to the hair with marker and a bit if acrylic
I finished it up with washes of water based oil

This is a small painting from my bottle project. The idea is to get a simple bottle shape into each picture - the same size, same shape.

Here, it's in the constellation.

Print Size is 10" x 10" - including a white border for framing (actual image size is slightly smaller). Its printed on archival art paper, which will last up to 200 years without fading.

This took a while to make, but I can officially call it the last piece I will make before entering my senior year at PNCA.

Basically my take at how the morals of fairy tales should be. We shouldnt keep ourselves blind and helpless, we should take control. In the original story the wolf is a symbol for predators--not in the animal sense but in the sexual one. And if you remember the girl gets tricked numerous times and is eventually eaten. I just wanted to draw a very calm woman holding the leash of a very ravenous wolf.

edit: If you see it as something about humans controlling animals--then you must see little red riding hood about how animals can fool you into being eaten.
They're symbols, not literal.

(you can read about her in Ovid's Metamorphosis, or find her in any greek myths book -avoid the bad ones, please start with Graves and the classics , then spread spread all happily spreading like a virus, you'll enjoy the reading trip much more like that and save yourself from some really really shitty interpretations-)

What I really like about mythology, is that many of the subjects are inherent of mankind and all our little shadow behaviours.

Niobe here is like those proud proud mothers who take pride in their kids to the point of recognizing their own egos in their children, crippling their individuality, destroying their own, and turning the children into dolls on which to support themselves. Their children stop mattering and what matters is their own egos at having sired them and everything turns into quite a parasitic relationship.

(I was raised quite the opposite, with the firm belief that parents should shove their kids of the nest and let them fly flyyyy away so they can grow up and parents can keep on growing themselves, while children should leaaave the nest, become self-reliant and leave their parents be XD, so I always get a bit horrified when seeing those kinds of needy manipulative moms )

Tang Dynasty Mulan

So here's Mulan, my next Disney heroine in my 'historically accurate Disney heroine' series. (The others can be seen here). I decided to go in a different direction for this-- instead of re-imagining one of the movie costumes in a more historical context, I re-imagined the costume completely. My somewhat selfish reason is that I find the generic 'ancient-y' han-fu in the movie to be pretty boring, especially when the actual history of Chinese costume is fascinating, varied and incredibly rich.

This particular costume is called a 'large-sleeved gown,' and it is a famous style from the Tang dynasty period, which is arguably the first period in human history to feature actual honest-to-God low-cut gowns. The famous painting by Zhou Fang-- "Beauties with Flowery Hairpins", from the late 8th century AD-- features this style. (This style is also the basis of the amazing costumes in Curse of the Golden Flower, which I watched for inspiration.) The story of Mulan is usually set during the Sui or Tang period-- there is a decent run-down of the variants of the legend here-- so I felt that putting it in this period was not unsuitable (especially since the movie itself is so generic, and pretty much impossible to date). I was inspired by the color scheme in the final dress she wore in the movie-- but put more of an emphasis on the crimson and turquoise, since that color scheme would be more indicative of a mature, confident woman. She holds her father's sword, and the emperor's seal hangs around her wrist (one wouldn't want to ruin the lines of the gown, after all).

If you're interested in Chinese costume history, then I highly recommend Gao Chunming's seminal book, 5000 Years of Chinese Costume, which I used for research. It's kind of expensive, but you can probably get it from the library.
